Build Your Character – Take Acting Lessons in San Diego

By Bryan B. – San Diego Acting Teacher

Are you dying to become and actor or actress? My name is Bryan B. and I teach acting lessons in San Diego. Acting is an amazing skill that can be developed and utilized in everyday life. When I was younger, my brothers and I used to reenact Saturday Night Live sketches and our favorite scenes from Ace Ventura and The Water Boy. This was a great way to entertain the family and have a great time.

I love teaching acting because it allows me to help my students transform into someone new. One of my favorite hobbies is reading because it allows me to become engulfed in another world. Acting has the same effect. My students are able to develop their skills and physically embody characters from plays that are centuries old, as well as emulate and physically look like a current celebrity by delving into the characters they are playing. It is amazing to see how someone transforms and looks like an entirely different person simply by doing their research and focusing on their posture, stance, hair and body language. Without saying a word you can become someone new.

Whether you want to become the next Broadway star or an Academy Award winner, acting lessons in San Diego are definitely a great way to start. The one-on-one attention you get from a TakeLessons instructor allows you to focus solely on your skills and talents.

Step out of the box, and make a character-building change. Take acting lessons in San Diego, and who knows - you could be the next face to grace the stage of the Lyceum Theater in Horton Plaza!

whether you're just starting out, getting back to an old high school passion or wanting to take class regularly to continue to grow as a working professional, we will create a program together to discover more of, reinvigorate and inspire you.

About J Marcus

Entertaining, provocative and inspiring - it's what actors do!

I believe in dedication and discipline, not doctrine.

I have directed over 40 projects for the stage in San Diego.

I continue to work as an actor on stage and in television.

I attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City - the "Fame" School.
I worked in repertory with professional actors and directors while attending Syracuse University.
There is justified myth and legend around CalArts and the art created there, where I earned my MFA

Some testimonials:
"[Mark] has been one of the most positiv
e influences on my playwriting career and in my life in general. He has been wonderfully generous both to me and to a horde of other young (and established) theater artists in sharing his knowledge and talent." Jim Knable, playwright

"Of all the directors who have staged plays for me since 1986, none has contributed so consistently as [Mark] to the quality and growth of the Playwrights Project . . . . He is a caring and reliable colleague, a principled man who believes deeply in the importance of theatre in a civilized world." Deborah Salzer, Founding Director

If you've got an AUDITION coming up for a stage play - I can help you with PREPARATION by giving detailed feedback on what you've already accomplished, suggest plays to choose a monologue from, and polish your audition to get you the role in as few as two one-hour sessions.

For students looking for PERSONAL ONGOING COACHING:
Beginning actors will explore how to work in your voice and your body. You will learn to use relaxation and breathing techniques, along with exercises in both memory and sensory exploration.

Experienced actors will work in greater detail and depth to find new ways to move you on to the next level.

You will select and prepare audition material and explore those parts of you that can best bring the character to life.

With consent from your director, actors preparing roles can get that extra time and feedback you want.

My 11 year old daughter has been working with Jessica for several months now. She is amazing!!! My daughter just started doing musical theatre at school and I wanted a singing coach to help her to feel more comfortable on stage. Jessica not only has helped her with singing, but has coached her with monologues for auditions with the San Diego Junior Theatre. My daughter had her first audition with SD Junior theatre and because of the wonderful support and direction of Jessica, she was called back for a lead role...this on her first audition. My daughter was not cast as the lead, but was cast in the play. Jessica has given my daughter much more confidence to perform and speak in front of people, even if she never becomes a serious actress. This will help her in any career she chooses. I would highly recommend Jessica to anyone looking for a highly qualified and professional teacher. Every time we leave her private tutoring session, my daughter always says " I love her!!!"...not kidding.

Jessica is absolutely brilliant!

Her method has done what I can only describe as "unlocking" abilities.

Her friendly yet diligent explanation of techniques activated and energized my body in ways I've never experienced -- like some sort of soundwave-based yoga. I barely recognize myself when this bold sound blasts forth stoked by her encouragement -- It borders on the transcendent, but mostly it just feels amazing and is tremendous fun!

Otherwise, Jessica herself has the voice of an angel -- and she's also incredibly smart, patient, precise, knowledgeable, encouraging, sweet, interesting, charming, eclectic, funny, super-talented, and generally lovely.

I knew I was out of my league in asking such a seasoned, classically-trained pro for help perfecting my rock n' roll grit, but she can effortlessly condense her formidable wealth of knowledge into succinct pearls of wisdom to toss to swine like me. She is a much better teacher than I deserve, but I am nonetheless incredibly grateful and thankful for every hour I spent with her.

I'll be recommending Jessica to everyone I know and will keep coming back whenever I can.

I'm sure you'll love her too!

Sincerely,

Dan Drake

Danielle L.

San Diego, CA

As the creator and producer of San Diego IndieFest and Say It Records, I have a unique understanding of the industry, and love to share that with my students.

It's paramount to me that each student's lesson be customized to her / his specific goals and needs. Whether those are for personal enrichment or for professional aspirations, your lesson will be personalized according to what's important to you.

I LOVE to teach, and appreciate my wee ones just as much as my elders...those who consider themselves "tone deaf" as much as my advanced students. As far as Special Needs go - I feel we *ALL* have special needs....every child and every adult! ;)

About Danielle

Hello Students / Parents!

I specialize in providing a fun, inspiring and safe space for each student to reach their goals – whether that be for the novice singer whose been wrongfully told they “shouldn't sing,” the more experienced singer looking to branch out into doing more with their music or doing it professionally, or the budding songwriter, actor or speaker looking to develop the talent and drive they feel within them.

I always remember the encouragement, patience and inspiration I received from my best teachers, and strive to provide exactly that to my own students. I sing
and teach most vocal styles, with the exception of opera, and utilize our studio to create a supportive, empowering experience singing, writing and recording. I absolutely love to teach both children and adults and look forward to learning how to best support each one of my students in their individual path toward realizing their potential.

Here's a bit about my background and musical experience:

• Bachelors of Fine Arts degree (Theatre/Voice) from United States International University – Graduated Valedictorian
• Chula Vista School of Creative and Performing Arts – Graduated Valedictorian
Workshops and studying with Bill Doyle, Roy Mote, Andrew Barnicle, Jack Tygett, Leanne Summers, among others.

"After seeing Danielle, I was impressed with her intensity as a performer. Her ability to get behind a lyric was stunning, she lives every line. As an artistic performer, I've yet to see better."
-Tony Ferguson / Interscope Records: No Doubt, Bush, Fisher

My original band, Danielle and The Masses, has been recording and performing live since 2001. We are endorsed by Ani Difranco, The Black Eyed Peas, The Bruce Hornsby Band, and have shared the stage with artists as Jamie Foxx, CAKE, Metric, En Vogue, David Byrne, Berlin, Margaret Cho, Cyndi Lauper, Jonatha Brooke, Beth Hart, Semi Precious Weapons and more.

I have written and performed music and voice over for Ace Ventura, Nutty Professor, VH1, various TV shows and independent documentaries, Eveoke Dance Theatre, among others, as well as having recorded eight professional CDs of various styles on various record labels.

For over ten years, my record / production company, Say It Records has been producing socially conscious music events throughout San Diego and Southern California that promote independent music, film, art, community and human rights. I also co-own Durga Sound, a teaching and production studio, with producer Alicia Champion, as well as San Diego IndieFest, a powerful community event which promotes and supports music, film, art and civic engagement.

I have a great time utilizing my contacts in the industry to help my students get work/ press / entrance into the schools of their choice, etc. For example, I'm happy to report that just last year we were able to book eight musicians on GLEE, as well as lots more in other capacities including using their music in commercials and film and helping them get cast in local theatre and accepted into arts-centered schools.

*** Lesson Details ***
I start on the first lesson by becoming clear about what the new student's goals and desires are – from there, we start developing technique to achieve those goals along with having fun right away doing what they came for - singing, writing, voice over, acting or using a combination of these things be it for professional purposes or personal fulfillment. Every lesson is personally customized to meet the specific goals of each student. As a teacher, I'm encouraging and fun, passionate and positive. While I'm definitely not "strict", I do appreciate focus and drive. However, I often work with people who have special needs and are working on developing those very things. I'm especially good at helping people through progress plateaus, roadblocks, stage fright, loss/ stress. Using music as a means of release and healing - for both kids and adults - is something I do a lot of and am very comfortable with.

As far as technique is concerned, I focus on utilizing posture, correct breathing and developing relaxed, strong support, so that the muscles are developed properly and without stress, enabling the student's voice to constantly grow while also steering clear of the injury that can accompany the straining that often happens when singing without proper technique.

I strongly encourage students to record their lessons on a mobile device so they can practice easily on their own, and so they eventually have a record of how far they've grown.
We mostly use tracks to develop repertoire, prepare for auditioning and performances, and to have fun singing the music that excites each student the most.

*** Specialties ***
Using music, writing and voice as a means of expressing yourself, growing as a performance artist, coping in challenging times, as well as a means of going professional and earning income are all areas I specialize in. Utilizing proper technique and learning how to sing / speak safely is also an area I focus on a great deal.

Learning precisely what each student wants is the key factor in my decision on how to achieve their goals. For example, using Speech Level Singing is definitely entrenched in my teaching, but I may not highlight it as much for those who want a more classical sound.

I definitely excel with the following: first timers, very young kids, students working through stage fright, artists looking to develop their own original project, those seeking growth in their process of writing / recording / performing, those who are interested in using music and / or writing as therapy as well as with amateurs who've always wanted to do something musical but who think they are "too old" or too "untalented/short/tall/ fill in the blank" to try. I believe we all have something to say with our lives - finding the voice within you can be an incredibly powerful and transformative experience!

Danielle is one of the most kind-hearted, positive women I know. I have been taking lessons with her for about 4 months now and she has really taught me a lot about myself and getting over my insecurities about my voice tone and singing in front of others. Her knowledge of the music industry has also really helped put the process all in perspective for me. Being somewhat of a closet singer, I look forward to her guidance each week to help bring this talent and passion for singing out of me!

Eulis K.

San Diego, CA

There are many approaches to acting out there, but one constant is that of learning to be in touch with your character. Acting lessons can help you learn methods to take character study step by step, allowing you to open yourself up to free-flowing, improvisational acting, where you feel like you are just "being" the character. This in addition to scene study techniques, vocal diction, character research and development, and other tools, will help you improve your craft one step at a time.

About Eulis

---------- Now teaching in Orange County AND San Diego! ---------

Hello! Thanks for visiting my profile. Allow me to tell you a bit about myself:
I have been performing as a musician for about 20 years and acting since I was a small boy. I started my musical education as a woodwind player and settled in to the wonderful world of singing over time. Music has opened me up to so many opportunities from touring the world to performing in marvelous concert halls and working with some of today's most revered artists, as well as giving me the opportunity to expand my performance through act
ing in various plays, musicals, television, and film.

Performing has been my salvation. It has been a best friend and constant source of joy, and I share this gift with others so that it might offer them the same. After 10 years of teaching, I have new experiences to draw from and share with my students. I've spent my last 6 years performing with Disney in Anaheim and this past year touring Japan in their Tokyo Disney cast, and I must say that my experiences have given "performance" a new depth. I'm excited to dive back into lessons with fresh ideas that will mesh well with my tried and tested teaching techniques.

Originally from Los Angeles, I now reside in Orange County and I'm especially proud to be expanding my studio to San Diego as well! I am so excited to share my experiences with the people of this beautiful and inspiring town. If you're interested in learning more about my lesson style, feel free to contact me and I'd be happy to talk with you about a plan to help you reach your goals!

My Teaching Style

Over the past several years I have focused much of my personal growth on developing my ears' ability to pick out and pinpoint vocal “placement”, resonance, subtleties of timbre, changes in pitch, breath support, air speed and flow, pronunciation and diction, and in general, the way in which all of these work together to create style. From these assessments, I work with the student’s particular needs to address each area individually and based on the learning style of each person.
To illustrate to the student their method as I see and hear it, as well as ways in which they might make changes to facilitate the ease of singing --be they changes of tessitura (range), length of phrase, tone color, the release of unnecessary tension etc.-- I make use of vocalise (vocal exercises), simile and metaphor, examples from recorded performances, demonstration, self assessment, and techniques to “trick” the voice into acting in a different way, in addition to videos, diagrams, and texts on anatomy and physiology. I feel that all of these tools provide a unique and personalized learning experience for each student.

I am a dentist and my wonderful assistant was having trouble communicating with patients. Her voice was flat and monotone and she would freeze up when asked a question. Outside of work her voice and personality was completely different, and I wanted to see it come out when she worked with our patients. She did 5 online lessons with Eulis using Skype. I noticed a difference immediately, she was more confident and her personality began to show in her voice. I am very happy with the results and my assistant has stated that this has helped her in both her personal and professional life. She is no longer freezing up when asked a difficult question and is speaking in a more direct and purposeful way. Thank you Eulis!
