Heather L.

Saint Augustine, FL

My piano students learn how to read music, play with proper technique, and express themselves musically. More importantly, they learn to believe in themselves and their own strengths. We'll begin our learning journey together by discussing your specific goals. Each and every student's lessons are customized to his preferences.

About Heather

More important than my conservatory education and my experience as an educator and a performer is my passion for teaching music and acting and my undying belief that anyone can learn to be a musician and an actor. I'm currently available to teach lessons in your St. Augustine home, my own St. Augustine home studio, and online around the globe.

I'm a graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey and a winner of its merit scholarship.
After performing with the New York and Royal Philharmonics, the New Jersey and Virginia Symphonies, the American Boy Choir and the internatio
nally renowned opera star, Andrea Bocelli, studying opera and piano at Westminster Choir College and performance art and improvisational acting at East Carolina University in North Carolina, and appearing in shows and pageants across the east coast, I found my life's work in 2003 when I began teaching music.

I've successfully taught hundreds of different students since 2003, from 5-year-olds with special needs, to middle-aged professional opera singers, to 65-year-old doctors of music. I've created and led a workshop about singing called, "The Whole Body Singer". I've written dozens of articles about music and music education for the blog at TakeLessons.com.

My extensive knowledge of the voice has encouraged and enriched hundreds of singers and prepared many of them to win competitions, pageants and auditions, as well as roles in operas and musicals.
Having both taught myself piano and received formal training at a conservatory has prepared me to teach almost anyone how to play.
The intensive training and education that I received at Westminster Choir College in songwriting, music theory and sight reading has benefited my students at every level.
My current work as singer and keyboardist in the acoustic rock duo, Timberwood, has strengthened my knowledge of a broad range of styles and genres. I have a strong commitment to continuing my education. That's why I recently (2014) studied songwriting online with the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

In the lessons that I teach, I'm flexible, positive and encouraging. While I want my students to have fun and love music, not dread it, I expect hard work and persistence. I am caring, patient, nurturing, and compassionate. In piano lessons, I usually allow the student to choose a piece with which to warm up and then move on to technique and repertoire. In voice lessons, I usually warm up the singer and discuss technique and sight singing before focusing on song choices. Joan Frey Boytim wrote a book for voice that I like to use, and I like the Estelle Liebling exercises for the more advanced singer. Hanon exercises are a big part of my piano curriculum, and I enjoy the Bastien and Alfred books for young and old. I have used completely random songs pulled out of a piano bench and a karaoke CD for kids. I will use almost anything I can get my hands on if it means effectively teaching music.
Acting lessons consist of exercises and games that apply learned concepts, and monologue and audition coaching. Parents are always welcome to observe lessons quietly.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide an acoustic guitar to bring to voice lessons. I expect my piano students to have a piano, an organ or a keyboard.

***Home Studio Equipment***
In my home studio, my students will have access to an acoustic guitar, an electronic keyboard, an acoustic piano and PC audio recording.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching classical, pop and musical theater singing, classical and pop/rock/chordal style piano, and sightreading, including solfege syllables. I enjoy using Estelle Liebling as my voice method and Hanon for piano technique. I have coursework in jazz and pop theory and songwriting from Westminster Choir College. Teaching special needs individuals is also one of my specialties, and one that I highly enjoy. I have coursework in Meisner technique and experience in both theatre acting and musical theatre.

Angela M.

Ponte Vedra, FL

Beginning-intermediate levels accepted (0-2 years playing experience). Piano lessons utilize several method books and focus on posture, hand position, technique, music reading, repertoire preparation and musical interpretation. Piano students are invited to choose additional music that interests them to bring to lessons for help.

About Angela

I am a flutist and teacher with over 15 years experience in the classroom/private studio currently serving the greater Jacksonville area from Nocatee in Ponte Vedra!

Parents, looking for a fun and enriching activity for your child (ages 4+) that builds brain cells and makes newer, stronger connections? I am one of only THREE Kinderflute teachers in the entire state of Florida! Please inquire about more information regarding the KinderFlute program.

Middle/high school flutists, want to earn a Superior rating at solo & ensemble or make the all-state band? I am looking for students with a d
esire to go further with their playing while having a lot of fun!

I have teaching experience in several age groups and areas of music education. Most recently, as a band/choir director in Duval County. I have also taught instrumental and general music at the elementary, middle and high school levels in FL and in my home state of Colorado. Since 1999, my private teaching experience has ranged from beginners of all ages to amateur adults and college music majors.

I currently perform as a flutist in the First Coast Wind Ensemble. Previously, I have served as director and played piccolo for the Cow Boy Band in Idaho Springs, CO, and held the piccolo/3rd flute chair in the Aurora Symphony Orchestra, CO.

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal for every student is consistent progress and growth. In our time spent together, we will focus on FUNdamentals and music theory through the use of games, movement, and your instrument. If there is a specific musical selection that interests you, we can explore that as well!

For the beginning student, within the first 3-6 months, we will begin to discover how to read music notation, read/perform rhythms, and produce a quality sound on the instrument. We'll learn how to play some traditional folk songs and begin composing your own works! We will learn HOW to practice and create a routine. I will help you figure out what you really want to learn and achieve that through our lessons as well as your individual practice.

For the intermediate-advanced flute student, we will begin understanding more music theory and different types of scales. Soon, you'll be playing solos with ease and be able to identify patterns in the music. We'll learn about performance practice techniques, breath control, tone production and musicality! We will also learn performance skills, how to work with technology, and how to have a great stage presence in front of a live audience. We will then begin learning more challenging music.

For all of my students, it is a journey that is exciting, unique to each individual, and one that we will embark on together!

Because music is a performing art, I aim to coordinate one to two music recitals each year for students who are interested. This is an optional event, but is highly encouraged as part of the learning experience.

*My studio is in a safe, family-friendly home, and smoke-free environment. We have a small, friendly dog-named Kevin. He is low key and very quiet. You may or may not see him at your weekly lessons. We also have a gray cat, but you probably will not see her regularly. The studio is cleaned thoroughly each week to ensure that pet dander and other allergens are removed.

So! What do you say? Shall we BEGIN THE JOURNEY TO MUSICAL SUCCESS? :)

*** Studio Equipment ***
I provide a safe, well-lit, studio space on the first floor of my home. I have an acoustic, upright piano, CD's, a laptop computer, a metronome, pencils, a tuner, and a music stand. You should plan to bring your instrument (for flutists), music, a spiral notebook for lesson assignments and notes, and a ready-to-learn attitude.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide some music and a metronome. I expect students to provide their instrument, music stand, recommended books/sheet music, a notebook, tuner, and a metronome.

Brenda B.

Jacksonville, FL

I teach piano to all students and levels, beginner to advanced.

About Brenda

A good musical foundation is important in having a sound piano technique and skill . One should be able to learn theory and methods easily with me. However, it is interesting to note that as my student you can develop your own artistry and technique as well. These are what I hope to deliver as your teacher ---help you learn the theory, skills, technique and method in a fun and casual environment! Remember ... our goal is to learn as much as we can in every lesson and try to throw any questions you might have during the class. It will be greatly appreciated. To let you know more about myse
lf, at age 5, I started playing the piano and went on to finishing Piano Pedagogy from Saint Louis Music Center and B.S. Mass Communications from Saint Louis University . My career as a music educator started when I taught piano at the Yamaha School of Music. Ten years of classical training me has helped me attain this rewarding career. As a child, I have had the opportunity to be a “finale” performer and an accompanist to many choral groups in school. My musical experiences also include performing in “Café Vasilici”, San Leandro , California , where I can play all styles especially classical music. The ability to sight read is just one of the many endowments I can teach. Others include, an impeccable love for music and a good ear for music.

*** Lesson Details ***
Have you ever started playing piano but got stumped and frustrated with the theory? Then you've come to the right class. I will teach you the keyboard skills and fundamentals you will need to become a successful pianist. I will provide you a step-by-step explanation on how to play the piano. If you need help with the written theory and you want to learn more about how to read and write notes, all you need to do is to enroll in my class. My instruction includes activities that will help you use the musical alphabet to read and write notes on the staff, identify intervals, and write sharps and flats. Not only will I emphasize note reading but I will help you develop a keen intelligent understanding of the musical notes and alphabet. In no time you will be playing the piano or keyboard and most especially read and play any music as you appreciate it!

It takes time and effort to learn how to play the piano and not all are expected to become wizards at it. For the most part, students should practice the piano/keyboard more often than not and just keep up with the course requirements when enrolled in my class. It takes enthusiasm, interest and most of all perseverance to play the piano however, with me you will succeed and be driven to become a good and skilled pianist!

Unprofessional and Unreliable

We scheduled Brenda for our daughter to come to our house. She never showed up, did not pick up her phone or responded to my text. She called back a couple of hours later and said she forgot. Ok, things happen, I get it. We rescheduled her to come again, this time she assured us she will be there. On that day, NO SHOW again. No call, did not pick up phone, did not respond to text. NOTHING! I received a text back a day later saying she cannot teach my daughter. Don't waste your time with Brenda B.
