Drum Lessons in Sacramento: Your Guide to the Local Music Scene

By Justin B - Sacramento Drum Teacher

If you’re taking drum lessons in Sacramento, you’re in a fantastic city to learn. There are a number of awesome music venues, and several notable drummers have come from Sacramento like Johnny Rabb (Clinician, Author, Collective Soul, Roland), Abe Cunningham (Deftones), Dave Buckner (Papa Roach), Zach Hill (Death Grips, Hella), and Mike Johnston (Clinician). All of these great drummers have performed at some of Sacramento’s best music venues. Here are some of the places I recommend for aspiring drummers in Sacramento.

Ace of Spades
is one of the bigger venues where you can catch some of the top touring drummers. Musicians play a wide range of genres from rap to rock, metal to jazz, and everything in between. The events calendar is always full, and it’s a great place to see both local performers and well-established drummers.

If you’re looking for a more intimate venue, check out a show at Harlow’s, my favorite place in Sacramento. There’s a great sound system, and I have seen some amazing drummers rock out on Harlow’s stage like Virgil Donati (Allan Holdworth), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), David Garibaldi (Tower Of Power), Thomas Pridgen (Mars Volta), Dennis Chambers (Independent), and Zakir Hussein.

The Boardwalk is one of Sacramento’s oldest rock venues. Since the '80s, it has played host to some of rocks’ greatest touring performers. You can also catch some amazing local musicians if you stop by on Thursday nights. The Boardwalk is one of the best places to play, and a great venue for local, up-and-coming artists looking to get their start.

Folsom’s Powerhouse Pub is an awesome place to see a wide variety of performers. Check out cover bands on Friday and Saturday nights, local, up-and-coming drummers on Wednesday nights, and blues and jazz bands on Sunday nights.

There are so many great places to see live music, and watching other performers is a fantastic learning tool for anyone taking drum lessons in Sacramento. Now it’s time for you to get out there and explore the local music scene.

Practice hard, and have fun!

Thomas R.

Sacramento, CA

I've been drumming for over 8 years now and teaching for over 3. I've had a big influence from rock, grunge, and alternative, but I dabble in bits of everything. I prefer to start with beginner students and work through intermediate. I teach all the way from the basics and forward. I will also teach you how to read and write music! My style is to teach the student what they want to learn and introduce them to new ideas. I'm very patient because we are all learning more every day.

About Thomas

Hi! My name is Thomas. I'm a 21 year old native of sacramento. I've been drumming for 8 years now and have been teaching for over 3 years. I'm still currently teaching at West Campus high school with their drumline. I'm very patient and enthusiastic with drumming. I teach all ages. I want to motivate and inspire people to fall in love with playing drums as much as I have. Along the way to becoming a great drummer, I will also teach you how to read and write music. I look forward to meeting you! *** Specialties *** Drumset-Any Genre. Prefer to teach someone without a specific style. I like to explore all styles because as a percussionist, it is vital to have a wide variety of skills. Percussion-Marching Snare, Marching Tenor, Marching Bass, Bass cajon.

Since the beginning of our lessons, Tim has been on time, easy going, patient and challenging. A great teacher for beginners but I'm sure just as great a teacher for any level student. I will continue to learn from his drumming expertise :)

Professional Teacher That Goes Extra Mile

Tim is an excellent teacher for my son. It is wonderful to have a teacher that is willing to meet the needs of the student instead of imposing their agenda on the student. An example of that is finding out what kind of music my son wanted to play and tailoring the lessons for that genre. This even included looking up music to bring to the lesson for a song that my son wanted to learn to play. Tim is able to explain new concepts well and can adapt his teaching to something different when a concept is not being grasp by the student. He is an excellent choice for us!

Awesome Skype Lessons

Tim is a very cool cat. He has the ability to teach for beginners or dig deep for those drummers who already have experience. If you are looking for a dependable teacher..... Look no further.

Matt K.

Fair Oaks, CA

About Matt

I have been playing drums for over ten years and counting. From bands to teaching I am involved in music and drums in every possible way. With some college experience in theory, world, and jazz music its helped round me into an all around musician. My passion is creating music and in the last ten years iv drummed on over ten albums and counting, in many different styles. While I've been in a touring act and play a lot of live shows, I still prefer teaching first and gigging second. I can teach you how to read, and write drum music, many exercises for the drum kit and snare drummer, as well as proper technique and I can help you with gear questions. I specialize in being a well rounded drummer, which means I love to study different kinds of rhythm from around the world, although if you ...

Instant Satisfaction

Matt is doing lessons with my 6-year old son and from the moment they met it was magic. Matt talks to him at a level he can understand, is so patient with him and really allows for him to have fun while learning at the same time. Matt is our third instructor over the past year and he is by far the best. My son is enthused about picking up the drums again and excited when Friday rolls around.

Barry E.

Sacramento, CA

My focus is to provide the most efficient methods for students to reach their own playing objectives. By integrating certain fundamental concepts in both technique and theory, the student will gain real world results that apply across a diverse spectrum of musical styles.

About Barry

I will always consider myself a life-long student of music and drums. Practice, like performance, is an art; and given our limited time to apply ourselves to our craft, it is important to make the best use of that time. Essentially this process is about problem-solving; figuring out what physical (and psychological) barriers exist that are preventing you from being the player you want to be. When I work with you, my intent is to help carve out your own path for you to achieve your own goals in the quickest amount of time and with the least amount of effort! This involves (a) clearly identifying your goals and (b) incorporating specific practice techniques that will effectively help you get to where you want to be. In my own practice, I’ve tended to shy away from a heavy ...
