My philosophy behind teaching has a lot to do with being physically involved in music making. I believe one needs to use one's whole body to support good singing. I'm very much into using movements to help students learn to move their breath through to create sound. I teach classical vocal technique as the basis for all styles. I teach proper breath support in order to build a strong, healthy vocal sound. After months of working with me, students will have a very strong grasp of proper breathing for singing and how to support their sound with their whole body.

*** Studio Equipment ***

music stands
free open space

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have a portable piano keyboard

*** Specialties ***
Classical technique as a foundation for all singing.
Everything begins with breath
all singing is about connection--connecting to breath, to music, and to audience

Adrienne is an excellent voice teacher that I’d highly recommend to anyone who wants to improve their singing voice or learn how to sing. I have a background in playing guitar and electronic music production but have always wanted to add singing to my musical skill set, and Adrienne has been very helpful in achieving my goals. She has a deep knowledge of the theory and technique of singing and does a great job explaining concepts that are often very abstract and difficult to grasp. She is always positive which helps boost my confidence in my voice, while at the same time she never allows me to sing lazily or with improper technique. In addition she is a fun person to work with and is always professional with scheduling lessons. With her help I’ve discovered a side of my voice I never knew I had!

Timothy H.

Washington, DC

We concentrate on developing proper technique including posture and fingering, scales and strengthening exercises, beginning to intermediate theory, musicality and knowledge of repertoire in various genres

About Timothy

I hold a Bachelors of Fine Arts from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. With over 15 years of experience, in both piano and voice, I've had to opportunity to perform, both domestically and internationally, with such great acts as Peter Nero and The Philly Pops, The Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, and many others. I served as lead singer, pianist, and co-songwriter for a number of independent bands covering numerous genres including, but not limited to, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Acoustic, and A Capella.

Since moving to Washington DC, I've immersed myself within the local music communit
y playing a handful of group and solo acts. I currently maintain a home music studio well equipped with musical instruments and music technology. I'm constantly practicing, writing, and recording to improve myself as an artist.

My teaching style is unique and individualized to each student. I set personalized goals to make every lesson a success, and I push my students to get the most out of themselves just like I do myself. I'm always enthusiastic and humor driven to create a personable learning environment for students of any age. Music is my life, and I'm so thrilled to have the opportunity to share my greatest passion with the hope that my students, too, will fall in love with music!

*** Lesson Details ***
My lesson environment is laid back and stress-free. I like my students to feel inspired and encouraged as they begin, and/or continue, their music education. I introduce fun and innovative ways to build students' musicianship and creativity while retaining classic methods to develop strong technique and proper performance and practice habits.

For beginners, we'll be exploring the basics of either piano, or voice, while focusing on proper technique, basic theory, and a solid skill set. Within 3-6 months, my students are able to read music and understand the language of it.

For intermediate-advanced, we'll focus on building musicianship and skill sets by furthering studies in music theory, varying styles of repertoire, proper techniques that will greatly improve your piano and/or voice abilities, songwriting, improvisation, and live performance skills. We can also cover the basics of recording so you not only have tangible evidence of your improvement over time, but the know-how to create your own music!

I ask that my students come prepared to every lesson with the motivation and commitment to learn something new each week! Lessons are a fun and creative way to discover yourself as an artist and a person, so let's get started!!

Jessica P.

Chevy Chase, MD

Classical music-focused, fun and relaxed environment, experienced teacher with top conservatory background

About Jessica

Jessica moved to the Chevy Chase/Bethesda area in 2009, having grown up and gone to school in New York and Ohio. She loves the area, and she and her husband are thrilled to be putting down roots in the community. As a performer, Jessica has traveled around the world, but throughout her career teaching has been one of her most important focuses. "As a relative newcomer to the DC area, growing my private studio has been a great way to get involved in the community. My teaching style is individualized, but I always try to include two important things: building a strong basic skill set, and develo
ping creativity."

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether your goal is to make it into All-State, give a solo recital, play tunes at family gatherings, or just try something new for the very first time, I will help you succeed and have a good time along the way.

In my view, the most interesting thing about performing music is that it is one of the few activities that engages both the left and the right brain at the same time. With that in mind, my teaching places equal importance on developing strong technique, and developing creativity. Students learn all the basics of music, and also spend time developing strong ensemble skills and strong background knowledge of style and repertoire, so that they can enjoy music in all kinds of settings, all their lives.

Knowing from experience how "boring" it can be to learn by rote, I combine technical work with fun time playing duets together, improvising, and exploring a wide variety of styles and genres of music. After all, there is no experience so motivating as hearing a new piece that you HAVE to learn to play yourself!

*** Studio Equipment ***
lessons in either living room or upstairs office; Steinway baby grand piano in living room;

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect piano students to have daily access to either a piano or a keyboard with 88 full-sized, weighted keys. Bass or cello students must have their own bass or cello.

*** Specialties ***
classical, baroque, renaissance

I really enjoy taking piano lessons with Jessica. It had been 40 years since I took lessons (as a teenager). Jessica's manner as well as her knowledge and love of music is just what I was hoping to find in a teacher. Her ability to explain musical concepts and her thoughtful approach to teaching has far surpassed my expectations. She gives great constructive feedback and ensures that you understand what she is saying. She is very positive and patient. I thoroughly enjoy my lessons with her and recommend her strongly.

Teaching and Coaching Philosophy (Voice, Piano, Spanish tutoring)
My interest is in the study of voice production, its apparatus, style/approach, health and natural behaviors as it pertains to the art of singing on stage and in private studio. My desire is to engage the students in the discovery and appreciation of the musical genres and styles of yesterday and today. I advocate a dynamic variety of approaches to music (interpretation) expression, reflections, and observation. I believe my role as a contemporary performer/entertainer and teacher has much in common with the early teachings of the Bel Canto techniques aiding the singers in their chest and head registers, passagio transitions, flexibility, melismatic approaches and many other embellishment vocal styles.

My interest in the study of piano production, its apparatus, style/approach, and natural tendencies as it pertains to the artists, musicianship, and professionalism on stage and private studio. I believe that teaching voice and piano is both an art and a science, whose pedagogy is based on continued research in historical and contemporary performance practices.

My teaching methods fall into these four categories:
Discovery ** Application ** Development ** Execute

My interest in the Hispanic language, its apparatus, style/approach, and culture as it pertains to the ever growing population and bilingualism around the Americas. My desire is to engage the students in the discovery and appreciation of the lingual- romantic tongues.

Spanish:
Countries visited; Mexico and Peru.
I can guarantee that within a few months you'll feel confident and sure that you're conversation- ready to Speak Spanish. Therefore, if you're preparing a trip to a Spanish speaking country, you’ll find Peruvian Castellano pronunciation straightforward and as good as any other, with few of the dropped letters or peculiarities found in some other countries.

Maureen K.

College Park, MD

I have been teaching piano lessons for several years now, to students ranging from 4 to 50 years of age. In the first lesson, students can expect to learn the musical alphabet, location of middle C, the correct posture and hand position, as well as some simple musical exercises depending upon the student's age and ability. My goal in teaching is to help people gain an understanding and appreciation of the piano, as well as the workings of music as a whole. While my background is in classical piano, I enjoy working with students on any style of music that utilizes sheet music.

About Maureen

Maureen has been teaching private voice and piano lessons since 2009 and is currently available to travel to students' homes to teach lessons. She teaches anyone with an interest and willingness to learn (regardless of experience level) how to sing, as well as beginning to intermediate piano lessons.

Maureen received her B.A. from Pepperdine University in 2013, with an Applied Music emphasis in classical vocal performance. Her teaching style is tailored for each individual student, in that what works for one student won't necessarily work for the next (particularly in regards to singers), a
nd strives towards finding the optimal method that encourages and helps students to improve. She firmly believes that anyone who is willing to dedicate the time and effort to learning a new instrument is capable of doing so, and looks forward to helping new students achieve their goals.

How Often Should You Tune a Piano?
Just as you go to the doctor for check-ups from time to time, your piano needs maintenance and care throughout its life.
