About Jesse

I started to fall in love with music when I saw the Beatles Anthology on TV; got my first guitar when I was 15 and have been hooked ever since. I started playing in Rock Bands in high school and started teaching lessons my senior year of high school in Dale City Virginia; then I got real serious about music and decided to go to Music School. I received my Bachelor Degree in Music Performance from VCU in 2006 and have been teaching lessons in the Richmond area ever since. I play many instruments around Richmond and Central Virginia, and you can most notably see me playing mandolin with bands such as, The River City Band and A Good Natured Riot. I teach every style that a student is willing to learn, everything from Italian Opera to Hip-hop funk. If a student is passionate ...

Jesse adjusted his teaching style to my prior knowledge of the guitar...which really wasn't much. His versatility helps a lot.

I am very pleased with Mr. Spencer's teaching. My Grandson is very anxious to go to his lessons on Tuesday and now after 4 lessons he has asked if he can continue. I highly recommend Mr. Spencer, when a friend asks who Xander is taking lessons from.

How do you say a teacher has good features. A particular instrument has good features.

Liz is a good teacher for someone that wants to take piano lessons. She is knowledgeable and very patient. She is also a Christian which is a very important matter to me when I determine who will be instructing me in any course. I made a wise decision. I look forward to each of my lesson.

He is GREAT at making me understand theory, which I never have. He's also exciting and challenging in learning how to look at music and anticipate/understand where it's going versus my habit of only looking one note ahead at a time. I wish he was a little more interested in teaching classical music, but I also understand that the new stuff I am learning from him will greatly improve my playing of that.

Jonathan has an exceptional background in music theory, which has been implemented well throughout my daughter's lessons. He is positive and encouraging as her vocal abilities rapidly expand. Jonathan has gone above and beyond measures I expected. He is an excellent vocal instructor!

I have been singing since I was four years old. I have been trained in classical, gospel, show choir, musical theater.

I've led choirs or all ages, children's and teen musical productions.

I developed vocal chord nodules in 2006 and had to learn to sing and speak all over again. So, I'm passionate about teaching students how to sing CORRECTLY and building their confidence and stage presence.

Strategies for Sight Singing

It may seem like instrumentalists have it much easier when it comes to sight reading music; by simply pressing a key or a string, the notes are immediately available to them without any additional thought, and all that’s left to them is to work out duration, dynamics, and tempo. Singers, on the other hand, don't have an instrument to rely on. Taking a song previously unknown to you and delivering a reasonably accurate performance the very first run-through isn’t a talent that everybody has.   … Read More
