About Chuck

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are custom-oriented to your goals. You will learn confidence in your abilities to perform well and have fun. I will train your mental toolkit, while steering you toward the digital and real-world tools you need to achieve musical success.

Working towards clearly defined goals in a low-pressure, focused environment, my students reach their maximum potential quickly and with confidence. With my expertise and your dedication, we'll have fun and you'll come away from each lesson with something new to work on.

You already enjoy listening to music, now it's t
ime to enjoy making it!

***About Me***
I've appeared on recordings with dozens of rock, pop, jazz, and classical groups, and perform on a variety of instruments and styles throughout the Boston area.

I listen to and play all kinds of music from Beethoven to Stravinsky, Arcade Fire to Beyonce, James Brown to Snoop Dogg/Lion. I have had the pleasure to share the stage with rockers Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots), and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), and jazz greats Maynard Ferguson, Jimmie Lunceford, Conrad Herwig, "Blue" Lou Marini, and Jeff Coffin (Flecktones).

I've played acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar, trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, violin, cello, and string bass drums. Some of my favorite recent projects have been:
-Quilty (Pavement-style hard rock band)
-The Nevermind Orchestra (brass band that covers Nirvana tunes)
-Chill Sons (my own band for which I write songs, play guitar, and sing)
-Manhattan Symphonie (an entertaining symphony orchestra featuring soloists on piano, violin, saw, urdu, and tap shoes)

It is a treat to share music with others, and my lessons are fun, challenging, and engaging.

Thanks for stopping by to look at my profile! Let's hang out and do music things.

Chuck was on time, professional and my son really enjoyed his first lesson. Chuck was able to quickly figure out where my son was in the learning process so that they could get started right away. Excellent teacher!

Chuck was terrific with both my five year old son learning to play for the first time and my more experienced husband learning to refine his skills and progress further with theory. He is excellent with children and my son keeps asking if he can come everyday.

I lucked out when Chuck became my teacher to give me guitar lessons. After all these years, I am finally beginning to believe that I can actually play a guitar, thanks to Chuck. He gives me his positive feedback at every lession which encourages me to practice and believe in myself.. He is so smart, kind, patient, talented, and funny too. If anyone comes to you seeking a very talented teacher to learn an instrument, you would be wise to assign Chuck to be their teacher.

*** Lesson Details ***
My first emphasis is on tone, sound projection, and pitch control. If you don't have a good sound and good presence, everything else is insignificant. After that is established, technique exercises are implemented in any and all styles that the student wishes to pursue. I prefer classical and jazz exercises for the saxophone. I expect my students to practice every day and "re-teach" themselves the knowledge and advice they receive from me. The REAL learning happens when you are all by yourself, realizing your mistakes and fixing them from within. I will show you how to go about doing this, but the student must be able to execute their goals on their own during the practice week. I am strict because I expect a lot out of my students. I also like to have fun! Don't forget that it is YOUR lesson. Whatever songs you want to learn, or if you want to sound like players you admire, let's go for it! Anything is possible!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Instruments: Tenor Sax, Alto Sax, Soprano Sax, Flute, Clarinet, Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, and Keyboard. Also have two chairs, Music Stand, Instrument stands (2 Guitars, Keyboard, 3 Saxes, Flute and Clarinet.) Books and sheet music, Stereo Speakers, and audio library.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring my instruments (Tenor, Alto, Soprano saxes, Bb Clarinet, guitar) I can also bring a music stand, sax stand, tuner, metronome, and all books. I highly recommend that the student owns all of these items just mentioned.

*** Specialties ***
I teach jazz, classical, funk, pop, rock, blues, and r&b styles on saxophones. On clarinet I teach classical and Jazz. I also teach electric and acoustic guitar. Styles for guitar include rock and roll, blues, rhythm and blues, and pop. I also teach vocal techniques, help with songwriting, and the full spectrum of music theory and improvisation.

talented musician and inspiring teacher

Trevor has been my sax teacher for more than two years. He is both fun and inspiring. I am definitely a better musician because of my lessons with him.

Trevor makes me work hard but understands when I need the lesson to slow down. My favorite part of each lesson is when we get to play the music together.

I went into working with Holbrook on the recommendation of the TakeLessons staff, after a bit of trouble trying to find the right person, namely because I had set a high order — I wanted someone to essentially give me a crash course in production, somehow helping me make an actual record out of a bunch of vocal song offerings.

It worked out a million times better than I'd expected! I went in there, with my big, presumptuously tall order, and Holbrook was wonderful about doing a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of making instrumental tracks around my vocals. I explained as best I could my vision for each song, and Holbrook would try out a variety of tempos and rhythms for each — and if I felt one wasn't working, he was completely fine with giving me something more to my liking. He was also approachable, relaxed, and good at explaining basic, simple things in music production to a green beginner, and showing me how I could do many of the steps myself in the future.

I highly recommend him to anyone who wants an instructor in music production and engineering. If he could teach me, he can probably teach anyone!

If you plan on learning or furthering your guitar knowledge I highly recommend Holbrook .
I've taken lessons with other teachers in the past but I must say Holbrook is the type of teacher that figures out your learning style ( yes we all have one ) , he'll take the time to find your strength and weaknesses as to make each less as beneficial as possible . I'm very fortunate to have him as a teacher !!

tyler A.

Holliston, MA

I was a self-taught guitar player until i studied music at UMASS Lowell where i learned about reading music and theory. I can give a unique approach to teaching by utilizing aspects of ear training and note recognition. I also have much experience in improvisation from studying jazz and playing in an improvisational band where listening and reacting to one another are key. I also go through lesson books such as the Suzuki books up to the real book.

About tyler

Hello, my name is Tyler. I am a recent graduate of UMASS Lowell with a strong passion for music. I play and manage a nationally touring band during the summer and locally during other seasons called Skyfoot. I am now 24 years old and have been playing instruments since i was 12 including guitar, bass, drums, piano, and voice. Teaching for me is very inspirational and i love immersing myself in the craft. I am hard working and have a very upbeat personality.
