I can help you get started if you're just picking up bass for the first time, or if you already have some experience then we can focus on more advanced material including scales, music theory and songwriting.
I knew I wanted to be a professional guitar player from the first time I picked up an electric guitar over 16 years ago. I started taking private lessons as soon as I got my first guitar, and without the crucial guidance and encouragement I received early on I certainly would not be the guitarist I am today, and that old guitar might even be collecting dust in a closet somewhere. Since I began teaching 8 years ago my goal has been to provide that same encouragement to beginning students and to help them realize that no matter what their ambitions are, they can be achieved with enough practice
and they can have fun along the way!
When I started high school I realized there was a lot more to playing guitar than the hard rock and blues songs I had been learning up until then, so I enrolled in a music theory class, joined my school's jazz band and began taking classical guitar lessons at the University of Wyoming. After high school I accepted academic and music scholarships to attend the University of Oregon where I majored in Jazz Studies, and I graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor of Music degree with an emphasis on jazz arranging. While at UO I performed in student combos and my own rock band Just People as well as the award winning Oregon Jazz Ensemble. I also had the opportunity to perform with the Eugene Symphony Orchestra and play several shows with Grammy-Award winning country artist Lynn Anderson.
This diverse experience allows me to help my students improve their technique and gain a deeper understanding of the guitar, regardless of the style(s) of music they are passionate about. I firmly believe that anyone can learn to play guitar and that lessons should be fun, whether your goal is to be able to sing your favorite song and strum a few chords or start your own band and take over the world!
*** Lesson Details *** I believe that lessons are most effective when they relate to your life and the music you love. I've talked to countless people who have told me "I used to play violin..." or "I played piano when I was younger...", and every time I ask them why they stopped I get a variation on the same answer: "I just didn't feel like practicing." My goal is for every student to look forward to their practice time, and to prevent it from falling into the 'chores' category next to taking out the trash and washing the dishes.
In order to make learning fun we'll start by learning songs that are meaningful to YOU. After becoming familiar with the basics like chords and strumming patterns, we'll dig a little deeper and look at the structure of the song and the fundamentals of music theory that went into composing it. After learning a few songs this way you'll gain not just a larger vocabulary of chords and rhythms, but also the tools to start writing your own music. From there we can develop a more concrete lesson plan based on your individual goals as a musician, whether you're interested in songwriting, improvising, advanced techniques or music theory.
In addition to practicing the material covered in each week's lesson I'll often give students small homework assignments, which can range from finding a musical example of a topic we're learning to writing their own chord progressions. I'm very relaxed and easy-going, but I expect students to come to each lesson prepared to work on new material after a quick review of the previous week's lesson.
After a few months of lessons each student will be able to comfortably play several songs from beginning to end, play basic major and minor scales, discuss the basic structural elements of songwriting (verse, chorus, etc) and tell all of their friends how much fun they're having learning to play guitar!
*** Studio Equipment *** Dedicated teaching studio w/ guitars and amps. There is no waiting area for parents but they are welcome to sit in on lessons. Lots of street parking.
*** Travel Equipment *** I provide a laptop, lesson-related handouts and staff paper. I expect the student to have their own instrument and basic equipment (picks, spare strings, etc)
*** Specialties *** My college degree is in Jazz Studies with an emphasis on arranging, I specialize in teaching jazz guitar as well as classic rock, hard rock, fingerstyle acoustic and blues.

Positive, up-beat and knowledgeable. Since I was in Portland on a vacation this was an out of the box lesson which Peter handled graciously to accommodate.
The two and a half hours flew by and sadly it was time to leave. I have been playing the guitar on and off for 40 yrs. and had many teachers along the way.
I would consider Peter to be the best well rounded instructor I have had.

I have taken guitar lessons from Peter for a year and a half now, and I wholeheartedly recommend him to any child - or adult, like me - for the highest quality music lessons!
When I researched the TakeLessons website (and others), I looked for an instructor with a strong music background and saw that Peter had a degree in Jazz Studies and Composition from University of Oregon. He has been teaching for a number of years now, and can teach any style of music, including classical. He incorporates music theory into each lesson - very important if you want to learn how to play, improvise or write music. For those students who want to perform, Peter has lots of experience in that arena too, regularly touring with his band and teaming up with other musicians as well.
Peter's an enthusiastic teacher who takes his lessons seriously, and it is absolutely evident how much he loves music. He's exceedingly patient and supportive, and always gives plenty of positive feedback. He taught me how to practice properly, which doesn't mean playing a piece over and over, but rather breaking it down into sections - or even a measure or two - in order to perfect an awkward chord change or erratic rhythm. But perhaps most important is that he doesn't rush through the lesson; he makes certain you understand a technical point, or makes sure you're able to play a finger exercise correctly before he moves on to the next thing.
I've had numerous music instructors over the years in elementary, high school, college and beyond and Peter is without question one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's an incredible musician and a superb instructor. And a pretty terrific human being as well!

Peter's a good teacher, smiling in the face of terrible, broken chords! The lessons are really enjoyable. Peter picks a suitable selection of music where each new piece builds on the past progress. I would recommend him to anyone.
I've performed and recorded on bass in many bands in Eugene and Portland, OR. As well as worked as a studio musician in many studios.
My name is Kyle S. and I'm incredibly passionate about music education for all ages. Over twenty years of playing all instruments has taught me there is not one specific way to teach music, so I change my curriculum for every student and completely customize what you learn to how you learn, and what you're interested in. I started teaching music lessons in after school programs when I was eleven and fell totally in love. I continued to do this for many years driving to neighboring towns, volunteering at church youth groups and local Boys and Girls Club all around my hometown.
nt on to study Music Education at Oregon State University and Guitar Performance at the University of Oregon and Jazz Performance on Guitar at Portland State University! At each of these Universities I taught students my age as well as locals in each town and have been supporting myself entirely through music since 2008! Additionally, I work for a Record Label in Portland, "PJCE Records", and have real life experience with production, press releases and booking through the west coast and mid-west.
In Portland I've been gigging, playing on records, recording music for films, and volunteering every week at Nonprofit Music Schools around town to help underprivileged kids, and expose them to the joy of music. Give me a call and we can talk about what you're interested in, and get lessons started.
Look forward to hearing from you!
*** Lesson Details *** I'm fairly laid back, and teach from a number of different texts depending on the interests of the student. Each student is different, and I vary instruction accordingly. I have a lot of experience songwriting, composing, and playing as a sideman in groups on different instruments. I've been part of bands led by myself and been hired by other people, as well as composing for different groups of instruments from trios to full orchestras.
If there is interest, I can also provide worksheets based on the curriculum and standards held by the University of Oregon, and Portland State University.
*** Studio Equipment *** Private home studio equipped with a many guitars, a piano, a Wurlitzer, electric bass and amplifier, two drum kits, and a beautiful kitty.
*** Travel Equipment *** I can provide guitars, amplifiers, and notebooks for all students even if they do not own guitars or amplifiers. I also make copies and email attachments of all homework, and record lessons and send them to students to listen to when practicing.
*** Specialties *** I've been playing and studying guitar since I was seven years old. I've attended Berklee School of Music summer workshops, camps, seminars, and presented music theory papers at conferences at the University of Oregon. I can and am willing to teach any type of musical style or interest to any skill level!

Kyle is an incredible teacher. His lessons are the perfect balance of fun, relaxed, and challenging. His passion is infectious, especially when delving into music theory. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to get a fuller, deeper understanding of music and how it works.

I and my daughter have only had our first lesson with Kyle, but we found him very enthusiastic, easy to work with, and left excited to achieve the plan he laid out for us.

Kyle has been great! I started using him for lessons for my son who just turned 5. He has the energy and attention span of a 5yr old. Despite this Kyle has done very well with him. He mixes the right amount of play and discipline to accomplish the lesson objectives and keep my son focused while maintaining a relationship with my son that makes him look forward to the lessons. I had a hard time finding teachers to start with someone so young, but Kyle has done great and I would certainly recommend giving him a try. We have done lessons both at Kyle's studio and our home.

A Professional Musician, I am now happy to pass my skills and knowledge on to the next generations so that they may have ALL the fun and enjoyment of music in their lives, that I had in mine.
Having toured the East Coast Venues (NYC to Key West) for 30 years, and self produced 10 CDs, I have 3 EMMY AWARDS for soundtrack music for the EXPEDITION FLORIDA SERIES, Nature Documentaries. They were funded by the University of Florida, Museum of Natural History, and the Tourist Development Council of Alachua County, Florida.
Playing acoustic and electric six string guitars, electric bass guita
r, piano and keyboards, drums, percussion and hand drums, I majored in Flute and Voice at University of Florida School of Music and have spent my life immersed in and obsessed by the world of music.
I have played classical, rock, reggae, folk, jazz, swing, country, bluegrass, praise, gospel, afro-pop, ska and 80's music, and have toured as a solo act, duo - CecilyJane (5 years), and with a full 6 piece band, SKATTERBRAINZ (8 years.)
I teach lessons and classes full time, and also perform LIVE and in person frequently in local venues for profit and community service. My students often accompany me!
*** Lesson Details *** Lessons start with learning the names of notes, how to read music, a bit of music theory (time signature, sharps and flats) and how this translates to the instrument the child chooses. All instruments are taught by fingering first and then musical notes second. It is easier for the child this way, and he/she can be playing a song with both hands by the end of first lesson.
As the child learns the beginning steps of reading and implementing music, I encourage them to tell me what songs they like, and then try to find an easy one to start with.
So that while we are learning "real music" we are also having fun with a piece that your child enjoys and has "CHOSEN".
This way they have some discipline AND some fun!
As pieces are mastered, the same pieces can be redone on different, more difficult levels, so that pieces are always growing and improving.
Eventually the student can read music competently on the instrument, as well as hear and play by ear.
At higher levels I teach the ability to improvise and read music and chord charts in order to play professionally with other musicians. I also encourage students to get with other students and friends to have music "sessions." They can bring their musical friends to lesson to help learn songs for TALENT SHOWS or CHURCH or what ever their immediate needs or desires are. I can also record "Karaoke" tracks for songs they write or want to sing for talent shows/ auditions.
All lessons are custom designed for the student's abilities, tastes and goals. ALL LESSONS ARE DESIGNED TO BE FUN, and ENJOYED BY THE STUDENT as well as the instructor. I want both of us to have a great time in lesson and learn while we do.
Once a student becomes proficient at reading and playing the instrument, they are invited to be a part of the HUMMINGBIRD BAND which does regular performances at local retirement homes and other local events and festivals. Bi Annual student recitals are also held at a local retirement home with a grand piano and Recital room.

With three years training with her on piano, guitar and drums, I can say that I have a pretty good merit to judge Jane. She's honest and brazen, loud and proud, but most of all, if you stick with her long enough, more than just a guitar teacher or whatever. With three years spent with Jane, I made a friend. So, if you want your kid to go to lessons, come home and not have an experience, Jane is not for you. If you want your kid to have another person caring for them each and everyday, and learn some bass on the side, I would highly recommend Jane Yii to you.

Jane was awesome! She had the entire family playing music together and now my son AND husband are playing drums together. Looking forward to playing as a family and finding joy and bonding in music.
7 years teaching experience. Head teacher at ROCK STAR GUITAR ACADEMY. Professional musician with released album and regular shows including a performance at the House of Blues in LA. Likes to encourage students to play genres and styles of music they enjoy.
*** Lesson Details *** Lessons will include scales, chord knowledge and music reading. Students can pick songs and music genres based on their preference. Interested in teaching people to enjoy playing music, not just practicing and being bored!
*** Travel Equipment *** Students should have their own keyboard/Piano
Students can expect interactive and tailored lesson plans that take into account their experience and the direction they would like to take their bass playing based around studying the great bass players that came before us.
My name is Ciaran, I'm an upright and electric bassist for the U.S. Army and play in various groups around the Portland area. I've competed nationally in Jazz combo and Big Band, and have experience in many other genres including rock, funk and classical.
Lessons will begin with basic technique then we will move on to groove, time, theory and improvisation. I believe in teaching around emulation of the bass players that came before to build a strong foundation from which you can make the instrument your own, and who doesn't want to be able to play like their idols? The bass is a wonderful i
nstrument and learning it will be a fun and immensely rewarding experience. I look forward to passing on everything I know!

"Perfect teacher for the passionate student
I've been taking lessons with Daniel for a few months now, and I have thoroughly enjoyed and grew from each le
sson. If you're serious about making music for fun or professionally, he's the teacher for you.
What I like most is how he creates a beneficial and serious learning environment that's still incredibly fun and positive. After a few lessons we were already playing songs together, and he's taught me a more effective way to practice on my own, which was a major problem for me.
As soon as you meet Daniel, you can tell how passionate he is about his craft, and if you display your own passion for music, you will work great together, and you WILL progress. I highly recommend him!"

"Knowledgeable, encouraging, patient, & prompt.
Having come from a very small musical background Nathaniel was extremely helpful in laying down a solid fo
undation for how to play the guitar and how to view music in general. Nathaniel clearly has a deep understanding of musical theory and performance. His lessons are structured around what you want to pursue, but at a pace and with material that is challenging, fun, and rewarding to complete. If you are looking for a teacher that is serious about music, experienced and poses the ability to help you reach your musical goals, whether that be increasing your aptitude with an instrument or studying complex theory, I would strongly suggest Nathaniel."

Eric is an amazing bass teacher. He has great taste in music and he KILLS it on the bass. His funky grooves inspired me to
practice for hours everyday. His music taste is very diverse, so if you have a song you want to learn he will probably be able to teach it to you. He also has a very keen ear and will teach you the skills you need to develop your ear so that you can jam.
