I've been teaching for over ten years and have helped many students become confident players. We will focus on your goals in music and tailor our lessons to help fit your specific needs. Whether you're a complete beginner just wanting to explore the instrument or a serious player looking for improvement in specific areas, we'll have fun while we're learning and playing together.
I have been playing music my whole life and teaching professionally for over ten years. I love teaching people of all ages and keep my lessons relaxed and fun. *** Travel Equipment *** You must have their own instrument and a notebook for taking notes. I provide an instructional CD and encourage you to bring a recording device, though it is not essential. *** Specialties *** I specialize in Old Time, "clawhammer" banjo and guitar playing. I also teach beginning to intermediate guitar in folk, rock, bluegrass, and finger-picking blues. I focus on learning by ear, and encourage students to use tablature and charts only as a stepping stone and not rely on written music, while giving them the foundations of basic music theory.
I began taking guitar lessons in the Bay Area at the age of 7. I was fortunate to study with respected musician, Tom Patitucci. I was involved with a touring band by age 11, performing all around San Francisco and the surrounding counties. I simply fell in love with playing and performing music. As I grew older I played in a number of different bands ranging from Bluegrass to Metal. In High School, my parents allowed me to teach lessons out of our front room and it was then I developed a lifelong connection with teaching. I studied music at Southern Oregon University and Portland State University. I graduated from California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. From there, I moved to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mt. range and taught music at the high school ...
BANJO! I specialize in the old-time clawhammer style. I teach the basic techniques, progressing through to things like double-thumbing, drop-thumb, extended left-handed techniques, alternate tunings, scales, chords and chord substitutions, learning tunes, making up your own, and improvisation + music theory. Banjo isn't just for fiddle tunes, after all. I teach strict old-time, too, but I'm especially excited about exploring the many possibilities that solid banjo-playing can open up.
Hi! I'm from Connecticut, originally. I moved to Oregon after college (degree in English, UCONN) to pursue a career in music. Currently, I am in three bands and sometimes perform solo. (I write and arrange in all of these bands.) I try to stay busy with touring, recording projects, and performing here in Portland. I took lessons from the age of 12-18, and have been self-taught since. Primarily I'm a guitarist, but I think being a musician means wanting to know more about and be able to absorb music from all types of players, regardless of instrument or musical style. I encourage this sort of all-encompassing, open-minded approach with my students, because music is just as much about listening as it is about playing. I've taught off-and-on for the past four years. I look ...
