Cory M.

Hawthorne, CA

I have been teaching and singing in performances for 30 years.
We work on sight reading, ear training, and theory.
I have an easy style and like my students to enjoy their lessons.

About Cory

So you want to play an instrument? Well I have taught for over 40 years and have developed special programs for you on piano, guitar, bass, voice and other instruments for you to learn. From easy beginner to the most advanced, I will help you to learn the songs you love! Whether we use the most modern technology in my professional recording studio or just some chords or perhaps learning to sight read something for a talent show, I can take you all the way to the highest performance level. Your goals are my goals.
I have studied with some of the most famous teachers in the world, includi
ng Charlie Parker's pianist Walter Bishop Jr. and Dizzy Gillespie's musical director Mike Longo, among many others.
I also have the experience of over 400 gigs a year to bring to your lesson. I have performed on piano, guitar and bass and vocals with famous stars and some really great bands which will help me answer many of your questions. I am currently still working, teaching and recording all the time. I also have a professional recording studio in my home which you can take full advantage of.

*** Lesson Details ***
I want you to have fun learning and can help you with understanding and memorizing your songs.
I focus on sight-reading, ear training (like jamming and playing blues) and theory. You get to choose the areas you would like to learn.
Once we have established the basics including melody and chords, we will pick songs you want to learn to play with your friends or just by yourself. We can use music books or go on YouTube to learn your songs.
I have helped students with auditions as well as performances. After only a few lessons you will hear and see things differently than ever before.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio comes complete with acoustic and electric keyboards, acoustic and electric guitars, electric bass and amps to play through, as well as professional microphones for recording. I use ProTools for recording which is used in every major studio around the world and it's loaded with great software for demos or mastering songs.

*** Specialties ***
I teach beginner, intermediate and advanced students.
I teach all styles of music including Classical, Jazz, and Rock/Pop/Blues.
I also teach songwriting, performing and recording in my ProTools studio.

First online lesson and my Skype was not working. Cory quickly found a workaround. He was patient and engaged. I feel motivated to do my 'homework' and am confident this student/teacher match is a good one. I look forward to many more lessons!

More about Kathryn
Kathryn began teaching in the early 90's in San Francisco with Mark Monroe, after co founding Mark Monroe Studios. MM Studios began originally in 1987 when Kathryn and Mr. Monroe packed their studio, by word of mouth, and when the studio totaled six hundred and fifty actors; they added a studio in Los Angeles. Kathryn has been coaching actors and musicians and developing artists ever since. She has been involved in the industry her entire life and has a passion for it. She most recently has been working in Los Angeles and San Francisco on her own show that had the good fortune of being awarded a residency at Berkeley Reps The Ground Floor.
She also works as a songwriter and singer and her latest release is with renowned Grammy award winning producer, Narada Michael Walden.
Her students follow suit, working constantly, winning awards, signing with agents, joining unions, and enjoying the perks of being active in showbusiness as gifted artists. Kathryn loves passing the torch to young artists and she s thrilled to be able to do so.

My Philosophy
I am also known as a singer/songwriter & recording artist but it’s my work passing the torch to actors and music artists that gives me the joy I have carried with me during my long career in show business; If an artist believes they have something to say creatively I’ll work with them to discover the way to do it and they will do it well. So well, in fact, that they are going to be able create and perform in whatever capacity they visualize. It is 100% because they find the way to discover what makes them thrive and to maintain a kind of emotional equilibrium that lives inside of them.
I solidify technique, the system, and we all know you gotta have a system. But actors also have to be able to support that system and that takes the ability to practice discipline and a work ethic and it takes a commitment to self care and most importantly the insistence of creating a habit of self love.
So, look, I don’t want to go all California on you, or all showbiz for that matter, but if someone is an artist, their nerve endings are probably longer than their appendages and it’s my job as their coach to look out for them...to make sure they have the ability to understand how much they deserve to be on the planet because actors are serving this planet and that is work. Art is work. And it's necessary. It’s how I do it for myself as an artist. And it’s how I practice with others. So that’s what I do. And I’m lucky I can.

Carol W.

Santa Monica, CA

Learn to sing with ease and confidence!

About Carol

I have taught voice for over twenty years. I studied music at University of California, Santa Barbara, where I received my B.A. I currently work as a professional singer for various local opera companies, music theater groups, churches and temples. I am principal soprano for Opera A La Carte and have also soloed with Repertory Opera Company, Redlands Bowl Festival, Laguna Beach Chorale and Celestial Opera Company. I have worked extensively in Los Angeles schools performing musical assemblies for students in elementary and middle grades through Southland Opera, LA Opera and Guild Opera of South
ern California. My teaching experience includes private voice lessons and master classes at Idyllwild School for the Arts.

*** Lesson Details ***
I emphasize breathing techniques to free up the voice to expand your range and ease of singing. In the lesson, we start with simple warm ups and vocalizes and then apply techniques to the songs you want to sing. I realize each student is different and I customize the lesson to the student's particular needs. I specialize in classical and music theater, however the basics of singing apply to all styles of music. In addition to working on breathing and technique for singing, we'll also focus on interpretation of the songs you are working on as well as how to overcome performance nervousness. Most students find that they are able to sing with more freedom, less tension and will have more confidence as they progress.

I also teach beginning piano, using the John W. Schaum series.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the main room, upright piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
They need to provide a piano or keyboard if I am going to their home.
I have a piano in my home.

*** Specialties ***
I work on using the breath as a fundamental technique for singing. Singing should never hurt. I use a lot of imagery to achieve freedom in singing.

Emily W.

Los Angeles, CA

Having sung and performed many different styles of singing, I have a unique understanding of how the voice works and what it needs to grow. In lessons I focus on specific exercises that strengthen the voice and develop breath support. I teach my students how to expand their range and release any physical tension that is getting in the way of healthy singing. We then apply this technique to the student's repertoire. I let my students sing a wide variety of repertoire, encouraging them to let their passions guide the repertoire we work on in lessons.

About Emily

I teach to help people find their inner rock star. Everyone can sing! But for many people, fear is an obstacle. I know firsthand how much courage it takes to stand up and sing. I teach to help others experience the same healing I have experienced through music. My approach to singing is informed by my education and years of performance experience. I teach my students how to embrace their fears and move through them to the other side. I also facilitate a supportive student/teacher relationship based upon mutual respect and kindness. Most importantly, I encourage my students to trust themselves
and their innate musical gifts. This develops their self confidence and ultimately leads them to their purest, most authentic sound.

I lived and breathed music and singing throughout my childhood, and I continue to today. I have over fifteen years of classical music training and performance experience. I attended California State University Northridge where I studied classical voice, art song, and opera performance. Since attaining my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Arts I have performed opera and musical theatre professionally across Los Angeles. I have since left opera performance to focus on my true musical passions: pop, R&B, jazz, musical theatre, and teaching.

**Lesson Details**
I tailor my teaching to each student's needs and desires. I teach all levels of singing, child to adult, beginner to advanced. If you are a beginner, I will quickly help you understand and access your instrument. If you are a more experienced singer, I will help you identify your opportunities for growth and we start from there. I focus on releasing tension and building a strong core foundation. You will learn how to develop consistent breath control, expand your range, and grow your voice into a powerful and beautiful sound!

**Studio Equipment**
Piano
Acoustic guitar
Music stand
ZoomH2 microphone and recording device
Musical theater/classical singer library

**Specialties**
I teach the same technique for all styles of singing - pop, R&B, jazz, gospel, musical theatre, and classical. I help my students make minor changes for each style, but the core foundational technique remains the same. I specialize in breath support, vocal chord closure, range expansion, vocal register negotiation, body alignment, relieving tension, healthy belting, emotional support, and acting for singers.

Emily made me feel very comfortable, and since I am fairly new to singing, I was pretty nervous for my first lesson. She was very understanding and accompanied me in the exercises so I would feel more comfortable. I've only taken one lesson so far but I'm looking forward to the next one!

Laurel taught my kids piano lessons for several years. When she moved away, she proved impossible to replace. She really cared about the kids' learning. For example, when my son seemed to connect better with the process and logic behind the music, she got him started composing his own! Both kids benefited greatly from Laurel's teaching and I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a piano teacher.
