I teach flute grades 3 - 8. I have been teaching band students since 2006
My latest article for TAKELESSONS: http://takelessons.com/blog/ukulele-or-guitar-for-kids-zo1
I have a BA in Music from CUNY College of Staten Island and a MM in Composition from CUNY Brooklyn College. I have been teaching Music in NYC Public Schools since 2005 where I have taught thousands of students ages 5 through 14; General Music and Instrumental studies. I have taught private lessons as young as 4 and as mature as 65. In addition to my work as an educator, I am a working musician and composer most recently working on a Chidlren's songbook titled SENSITIVE SAM, and video game musi
c for the iPhone, iPad and iPod APP titled Tin Man Can released by Chillingo and Red Candy Games. I use my creativity to engage my students, teaching them musical empowerment by learning how to improvise and compose their own music. My primary instruments can be found in any rock band (guitar, bass, drums, etc.) however I have extensive experience and success in teaching string and wind instruments. I am a fun and outgoing person who loves talking about music or just about anything, I would be happy to be your music teacher!
*** Lesson Details *** I have a laid back personality but I stress self discipline in my lessons. I teach students to be their own boss! I want my students to take responsibility of their education because unlike the subjects that we NEED to learn for life, music can be the one thing we choose to learn to enrich our minds and spirit. I always begin my lessons with just getting to know the instrument, making sounds and noises and improvising on whatever the student already knows. I then proceed to rudiments, taking the student into understanding music as a subject and how to transfer things on a page or sounds in their ear to the instrument. I have a preferred way to teach and a curriculum I use, however I will ask the student what their goals are at the beginning and always keep my instruction steadily aimed at achieving those goals. After three to six months, students will be able to sight read simple melodies and chord names, as well as play some of their favorite songs and some classics.
*** Travel Equipment *** I can provide a computer, music stand, manuscript paper, stickers and a sense of humor.
*** Specialties *** I have taught Suzuki and Orff methods as well as traditional notational reading. I prefer to teach music reading to students ages 8 and up. I teach instruments, theory/ composition as well as songwriting.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you Maureen for the piano lessons you have been giving to my mom.. It was so wonderful yesterday my brother and his family came to the house and mom played "Love Me Tender", of course by Elvis Presley.
It was a tear jerking moment.
Mom has had issues with her brain from a car accident, and her piano lessons with you have been the best, best thing for her....from our entire family,

Family Music Teacher
We have enjoyed having Maureen as our familyâs music teacher. My son started taking flute lessons with Maureen in 2009 and advanced through the levels very quickly. He plays flute in YOSAC (Youth Orchestra of Southern Alameda County). He also plays saxophone and tried out and was selected for the Alameda County Honor Band. Maureen worked with him on jazz theory and improvisation and he plays in the jazz band at school. With Maureen, he worked through all six levels of Master Theory and is ready for the college level AP Music Theory at 14 years old. He also completed the MTAC (Music Teachersâ Association of California) Composerâs Today workbooks and used http://www.noteflight.com to write his own music and participate in composition contests. My daughter has been taking piano and violin lessons with Maureen and has been doing a great job. She is playing classical music on violin in school and in YOSAC (Youth Orchestra of Southern Alameda County). On piano she is learning to play the blues and jazz, as well as learning theory and composition. Both of my children have been able to successfully participate in the LaHonda Summer Music Camp. We have had a great experience with Maureen throughout the past 5 years and have enjoyed seeing her each week.

Last October my daugther received piano lessons as a gift for her birthday. We started taking lessons with Maureen in November, my daugther, who had just turned 6 was very excited to start classes. Maureen had been very patient with her and caters to her ability and age. Sometimes my daugther gets discouraged, because she feels like she isn't progresing as fast as she would like, but after class she is always excited and ready to come home and continue practicing. Overall, I am pleased with our experience thus far. Maureen is very accommodating and is equipping my daugther with the skills she needs to be a successful piano player.
I am a classically trained pianist and trumpet player with a bachelor's degree in music education. I have taught for over 20 years, to both adults and children, with a focus on classical basics and music theory for beginners and stylistic development in various musical styles for intermediate and advanced students. I teach from a standard method, but adapt my teaching style to the personality and learning strengths of my students.
I teach from my home in the Castro neighborhood.
*** Lesson Details *** You can expect a calm teaching atmosphere and a generally laid back approach t
o your learning. I am experienced in teaching students of all musical backgrounds or none, and adjust my expectations accordingly. I teach from a standard method, but incorporate other methods as well depending on what you want from your lessons. We will work together to determine how you learn best and what you want from your lessons. If you are a beginner, within 3-6 months you will know how to read music, know basic theory, and be able to perform pieces suited to your level at recital. If you are intermediate or advanced, we will focus on your technique and understanding of the music you are playing or desire to play.
*** Studio Equipment *** Yamaha Spinet Piano
*** Specialties *** I am classically trained, but well-versed in many styles.

Excellent in all regards
Sandy is great. She is supportive and encourages me beyond what I think I can do (and usually I can do it). I've only been working with her for 3 weeks and already my high notes (my biggest problem) are much better and I'm sight reading at a much higher level. She is helping me to have a goal (an audition about 5-6 months) which gives me the incentive to practice when the going gets tough. She is helping me to bring my love of music back into my life.
ChristineH July 23, 2012
Sandy is extremely patient! She is very fun to work with and I am enjoying my lessons thus far. Thanks Sandy!

Sandy rocks! She's just really smart and always finds a way to keep me focused and entertained. Really happy with my trumpet classes :)
I began playing trumpet in middle school (junior high then) and have been playing for over 50 years. I have studied with professional musicians in the field of Classical, and Jazz.
I have a BS in music education received at Lehman College, Bronx, NY. I am a professional musician/ composer/ arranger.I received my teaching credentials at SFSU and have been a General music teacher as well as a, band teacher. I have studied trumpet with Classical ( Wilmer Wise)and Jazz musician (Bill Hardman) and big band arranging with Frank Foster( saxophonist and arranger with Count Basie Band). At present I am retired and teaching privately.
I have been teaching music for over 50 years as well as being a professional musician/ composer and arranger. I not only know my fundamentals ins
ide and out, but also I know many tricks of the trade. Over the years I have developed special teaching techniques that enable students to make sense out of music and progress rapidly on their instruments.I love playing music and aim at stirring that same kind of excitement abut music in my students.
To each lesson I bring a unique mix, encouraging the student to pursue excellence and also have fun. I am well qualified to teach: woodwinds( oboe, flute, clarinet, all saxophones) brass(french horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba), and piano.
*** Lesson Details *** I make music interesting to learn. I encourage students to practice daily so they can improve. The more they improve the more fun they can have with music not only alone, but with others.
I am very patient with my students especially with beginners. I know that for them it is like learning a new language. Once they begin to increase their musical vocabulary, they will enjoy what they can do with music.
*** Studio Equipment *** Seating for parents, basement studio, piano, drum set
*** Travel Equipment *** Students should provide their own instruments.

It's been more than a year of weekly lessons with Mack, and I could not be happier.
Mack is smart, quick, and knows how to handle kids to get results. There's no wheedling, bargaining or begging. It's just ok, do this, no, stop, do it again., No stop do it again, no stop do it again, and then good, that sounds good. I guess I should not be surprised, really, but my 13 yr old son cites this as what he likes best about Mack's instruction - it's all business.
Would I recommend Mack as a teacher for kid's music lessons? Yes, without reservation. Mack is an excellent teacher.

Patient and Helpful
It has been fun. Hopefully I'm learning something and getting better.
Equally at home in the jazz and classical worlds, I have been performing professionally since I was 9 years old, and teaching since I was 15. Having studied under renowned teachers Frank Glasson, Ken Larsen, Steve Emery and Adam Luftman, I don't force students to learn one way, but rather find the best approach for them to get results. I really enjoy helping each student find their path to success!
Hi, there! My name is Will, and I've been teaching the trumpet privately since 2006. I have loved helping my students learn to play with a great sound and technique in variety of styles, including jazz and improvisation. I went to Boston Conservatory and earned a degree in Trumpet Performance in 2011. I'm a patient and upbeat teacher, who believes that each student needs their own approach. I look forward to helping you reach your goals on this beautiful instrument!

My son wants to play trumpet in the jazz band at school so he asked for lessons over the summer. Iâm so glad we found Jordan. He welcom
ed us right in and worked so well from that first moment. My son is a bit shy, so Iâm so grateful that he found learning from Jordan so easy. In fact, every time he came out of a lesson, he asked for more lessons! The feedback from Jordan has been nicely detailed so we know where he is improving, where to focus his practice sessions (and reminding him to practice), and giving suggestions of music to listen to, to make him notice that the learning isnât just practicing, but listening as well. Jordan clearly knows and practices what he teaches. My son also mentioned that he really appreciates the times when Jordan plays along with him during the practice. Thanks Jordan!"

My son decided to start playing the trumpet this year, in 7th grade. He was significantly behind his peers since most of them have been playi
ng since 4th grade.
Last month, he started taking lessons via Skype with Chuck. He has been a wonderful teacher. He's very patient and thorough. In just a few lessons, my son has made significant improvement. His band teacher has even noticed and commented on it. My son is very excited with what he has learned from Chuck each week. Chuck is always on time with the Skype call and we love the convenience of not even having to leave the house!
Also, my son is on the autism spectrum (Asperger's) and Chuck has been fabulous with him. He's kind and very patient. He puts things in terms that my son can understand and goes at his pace.
All in all, we are very happy with Chuck."

"My jazz instructor in High School led me to Bobby three years ago. He taught me a lot of things about playing the trumpet and greatly increased my ability
as a trumpet player. He is very, and inspired me to want to get better at playing through encouragement and his high quality playing. Every lesson is very personal and fun. I know that sounds cheesy, but I looked forward to every lesson I had with Bobby. Bobby is a very skilled player, and unlike many great players, he can teach just as well as he can play. Bobby and I also spent a lot of time talking about Jazz theory. I am now fairly knowledgeable about theory, one of the best in my school, and I learned it all from Bobby. If you take lessons with Bobby your trumpet skills will vastly improve, and if you want to learn jazz, Bobby teaches jazz theory as well as he teaches trumpet, if not better. The last thing I have to say is something that Bobby told me at our very first lesson, "we will both learn from each other, you will learn trumpet and jazz skills, and I will learn how to effectively teach you." Every lesson with Bobby is extremely personal, and he is constantly improving his already great teaching skills."

"I worked alongside Caleb at Stokes Forest Music Camp as co-directors of the brass ensemble for three years and highly recommend Caleb as your next trumpet
instructor. Caleb has an exceptional understanding of brass fundamentals and knows how to communicate his knowledge clearly with all levels of learners. He led our brass ensemble with enthusiasm, demonstrated his love for music everyday, and always contributed professional tips to our students that helped refine their playing. I am absolutely sure he will do the same for you!"
