About Farobag
Music Director of the Chicago Philharmonia Orchestra since 1985, Farobag has also served as Managing Director of the University of Chicago Performing Artists Series from 1989 through 2002 and principal conductor of its resident professional ensembles. A skilled interpreter of Baroque literature as well, Farobag continues in his capacity as Artistic Advisor to the Baroque Masterplayers, a virtuoso ensemble that concatenates period performance techniques with modern instruments thus creating a unique voice within the realm of 17th and 18th- century repertoire.

A double graduate of the Eastma
n School of Music and the University of Rochester, Farobag studied under Anastasia Jempelis, a pioneer of Suzuki violin pedagogy in the United States. In addition to the Suzuki curriculum, he is also associated with the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program that sets a national standard of musical achievement in various fields.

Befitting his penchant for encouraging artistic interest amongst younger members of his community, Farobag is also the principal conductor of the Zoroastrian Symphony Orchestra that offers a unique mixture of young and seasoned professionals sitting side-by-side in a strictly professional setting. Since the year 2000, the ZSO has staged highly successful performances at various venues in Houston, Chicago, and Toronto. A New Year's eve performance in Los Angeles is scheduled for 2014.

Having also taken graduate-level coursework in educational psychology, mathematics, and philosophy at the University of Chicago, Farobag offers tutelage in various areas of elementary and secondary education as well as in SAT, ACT and GRE test preparation.

Additionally, as a certified Reiki Master, therapeutic and/or educational sessions are also extended to those who may be inclined to alternative healing techniques.

*** Lesson Details ***
Sheer technique is necessary but insufficient to play an instrument well. Aural skills, that include the study of functional tonality and voice-leading are important factors that impart musicality. This is of great import if the prospective musician wants the audience to truly enjoy his or her performance !

Whether it be the 3 Rs or preparation in the performing arts, a remarkable instructor must go well beyond the subject matter at hand and help imbue the student with a spirit of wonder that, in due time, will foster enthusiasm necessary for excellence.

A child emulates and learns to communicate in his or her mother-tongue through a supporting and nurturing environment. Likewise, a student needs to be sufficiently motivated to embrace learning in a familiar supportive manner.

I have had the pleasure of taking vocal lessons from Mr. Cooper for about 2 years now, as well as starting Suzuki piano not too long ago. He is a gifted teacher who truly has a passion for teaching and love for music! Not only has he improved my aural skills, but he has helped me understand music on a much deeper level! My knowledge of technique and overall musicianship has improved drastically while taking lessons with him. Mr. Cooper has challenged me and broadened my musical horizons. He has helped me advance and learn new technique on the piano, as well as expanding my vocal range and performance skills. I would highly recommend him!

*** Lesson Details ***
Each lesson is tailor-made to suit the student's individual needs. Custom action plan will be given to each student on a case-by-case basis. No instruments are used in my lessons, as I train the voice to be a standalone instrument. However, if you would like to accompany yourself with a guitar, piano or percussion instrument, you are very welcome to do so.

I am available 24 hours a day for online coaching and as early as 7:00 am CST for in-person sessions.

*Please note that 15-minute sessions are ONLY available online. In-person sessions must be a minimum of 30 minutes. 31 and 61-minute sessions are ONLY for whistle register training.

Timing Disclaimer:
Our time together is very valuable. If you are not on time for your session, the missed portion will not be made up at the end of the session. If I am not on time, I will make up the missed portion at the end of the session or alternate agreed-upon time. No exceptions or make-up sessions will be made for illness, weather, transportation issues (including car trouble), or any other short-notice reason. Rescheduled lessons must be made a minimum of 48 hours in advance and must be made up within the calendar week of the original lesson. If it is not made up within that week, it will still count as a paid session and cannot be made up at a later time.

Label me Traditional, or Classical, or even Persnickety, but we all transcend labels. I can perform opera, simplify unifying concepts, teach folk singing, direct a church choir, suggest country repertoire, coach performance charisma, and even officiate a marriage ceremony as a Dudeist Priest. I also bake a mean pie.

I teach adults private music lessons in singing, piano, and theory. I teach dependable, responsible, well-mannered adults.

I’m good at teaching private music lessons. I know what I’m doing. I have decades of experience, but I keep my prices low. Why? Because I expect my stud
ents to be dependable, responsible, well-mannered adults. That kind of minimizes the marketing demographic, doesn't it?

If this kind of straight talk offends you, you should probably just scroll on by. I promise to be friendly and jovial as soon as we get past the upcoming legalese. Before I talk more about myself, let’s talk about my students.

My students are willing adults capable of using email and the internet as our main form of communication outside of lesson time. This includes homework assignments and schedule changes.

My students use credit cards in their own names to pay for lessons.

My students have their correct email and phone number contact information on their student profiles.

My students do not bring pets or children to their lessons. One quietly observing guest is welcome with 48-hour notice.

My students know if they use too much fragrance, whether it be laundry scent boosters or hair treatments, they may be refused entrance into my studio. It's a big deal.

My students know that coming to my studio means you climb stairs to a high 2nd FLR walk-up.

My students recognize they pay for any lessons not canceled or rescheduled before the 24-hour deadline, whether they attend or not.

My students promise not to be around me when they are sick. My students ask me to forgive late cancellations caused by true emergencies, but know I don’t have to.

My singing students have a place to practicing singing, and promise to read the "Your First Singing Lesson" section found on each Singing or Voice Subject Page.

My piano students have regular access to an instrument that can legally be called a piano, including a damper pedal.

My theory students only need a pencil and something like a plastic recorder flute, a harmonica, or a toy keyboard, at least for the first lessons. A piano is better, of course.

Now, if you’re still around after all that, we may actually be a good teacher-student match.

I welcome you to consider me as your teacher for casual yet traditional private music lessons. As partners, the student and I build a plan, balancing current aspirations with traditional methods, keeping practical value in mind. I recommend a weekly recurring lesson appointment, but I also allow Schedule-As-You-Go. That means you may schedule a lesson when you want one, subject to availability, instead of holding a repeating weekly time slot.

Singing and Voice:
Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. Ages 18-99. Singing and Voice lessons have to be at least 45min long, and are available in my office, online, and maybe off site. Ask about specialized "choir" lessons for individual sessions in choral technique and repertoire. See more details on each subject page.

Piano:
Students can take Piano lessons, IF they already own a piano or minimally acceptable keyboard. For further clarification, please see the Subject Page. If all you have is an unacceptable keyboard, sign up for Music Theory and I can still teach you how to read and play KEYBOARD. Thinking it's possible to learn to play piano when you have no piano to practice on is merely a fantasy.
I teach beginning up to intermediate. Ages 18-99. Available only in my office or maybe off site. I don't teach piano online. See more details on each subject page.

Music Theory:
Rudimentary and Beginning students only. Ages 18-99. This is what you should take if you want to learn to read music or play by ear and you don't have a piano. You can also take this for any general information music class, as long as you understand you’ll be learning it from the Music Theory side of things. Available in my office, online, and maybe off site. See more details on each subject page.

Prices for my office in Chicago near 800N/1600W, or online: (where available) 30min for $30, 45min for $41, 60min for $50. If you live within a mile of the Chicago Ave / Ashland Ave intersection we can discuss the possibility of me coming to your location for an additional $15 per lesson. So far I've only had one lesson with Melodie and she really cares to help you achieve what you're trying to accomplish. We went through a few things such as posture, how to breathe, humming, vowels, position of tongue and other things. About myself: I don't know how to sing and this is my first singing lesson.

My lessons with Melodie have been great! She is extremely knowledgeable. I'm a new piano player, and she has been very patient with me as we work our way through the basics. She is great at explaining the theory side in a way I can understand. And the out of class work she suggests not only drives home what we worked on in the lesson, but it also has me playing some basic songs...which is encouraging and keeps practice fun!

I have at least a little experience in everything performance related. You name it - chances are I've done it! The two areas I have the most experience teaching though are acting / audition coaching (I've been teaching this on and off for over 10 years), and vocal coaching / singing lessons. While I am a highly trained singer that can sing anything from Pop, to Broadway to Opera - I am NOT the best accompanist. As long as you are fine working on songs with a pre-recorded accompaniment track, or acapella - I'm the teacher for you! I'm also a former cast member of Walt Disney World and am a
skilled puppeteer. I'm a funny / nerdy / silly teacher, so all levels of students will feel welcome. I look forward to teaching you!

I've worked with a number of voice teachers and have always really struggled. The fact is: just because someone can sing and has been trained to sing, doesn't mean they can teach. Monica is a teacher almost as much as she is a performer. She THINKS about pedagogy ALL the time, like real teachers do. When she is learning, she is thinking of ways to pass on that knowledge to her students. She puzzles about EACH of her students, crafting lessons for THAT particular student, starting where that student is, and moving them forward in the way that particular student needs to be moved forward. There is no cookie cutter progression of lessons from Monica. This natural spirit of a teacher also shows in the balance she has between real passion to see her students improve (and so the desire to push her students) and TOTAL supportive patience as they move at their own pace. That is a rare skill. Finally, for me, as an actor, I see singing primarily through the lens of the stage and my theater career. Other teachers have TRIED to take that into account by occasionally mentioning it, but Monica ONLY thinks as a stage performer and so EVERYTHING she does is with auditions and performances in mind. This means we don't waste time on songs I can't use or on vocal styles I can't use, and we're always dealing with the practical application to the work I want to do. Monica cares, loves what she does on stage and while she's teaching, SEES her students for who they are and has never yet lost her curiosity for understanding what stands in my way as a singer and how she can best help me overcome it. I'm so grateful that I met her and for the progress as a singer she's helped me attain.

Hello! My name is Miriam-Rose, and I have been teaching violin/fiddle to students of all levels and ages for over six years. I was trained classically in the Suzuki method from a very young age, and also have a significant background in traditional music, specifically Scottish fiddle. During my time at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, I created my own degree with a focus on Scottish music, and also became the third place winner of the 2012 National Scottish Fiddle Championship.

Very good at explaining concepts in a second, or sometimes third, way so that her student can make an inner connection. I also admire the way she organizes her lessons so we refresh and enhance the previous session and then move on to new technique. Appreciate the professional way she communicates as necessary outside class, too.
