Hello! Thank you for your interest in taking guitar/piano/music lessons.
I am a professional teacher/studio musician/performer/producer with over 17 years of private teaching experience and a graduate of the University of Miami Studio Music and Jazz program in 2002 specializing in the guitar.
I am available to teach guitar(acoustic, electric, classical) for all levels, ages, and styles(pop to folk, rock to soul, world to classical) in English, Spanish and Japanese.

Born in Cali, Colombia on April 1979, I began my musical endeavors studying the piano at the age of 6. Early on I had the opportunity to play percussion in the school symphony while at the same time developed an intense interest in the instrument that would become my true love, the guitar.
During 1996-98 I studied jazz guitar at the New World School of the Arts music program under the direction of J.B. Dyas and Dr. Roby George. Upon graduation, I was immediately accepted to the University of Miami jazz guitar program under the direction of Randall Dollahan. It was during this time that I also refined my skills as a classical guitarist and as a composer/arranger. In addition, I began passing my knowledge onto friends and eventually began working as a teacher.
My ability to play almost any genre of music is the fruit of past experience playing with an impressive variety of music groups, including jazz combos, symphony orchestras, Andean world music ensembles, and several rock and pop groups as well. As a studio guitarist I have recorded for various artists including Jaci Velasquez, Carlos Ponce, Alexandre Pires, and Noelia.

I will also be playing along with you and demonstrating everything that we're working on - music is meant to be shared and played with others and it is important to have that experience of interaction from early on in your lessons.
So whether it's learning to accompany yourself or others, write songs, read music, understand harmony, solo, or just jam out to your favorite songs, you will be well on your way to reaching your goals within 6 months of my lessons.

I left a review as many have done at the beginning of my lessons on the site's request. I studied with Edwin for about two years through Skype, and wanted to evaluate the experience after it was completed. Edwin was a very polite and skilled teacher. He taught me many new techniques and different styles of jazz guitar that stick with me still, and which I use every day in my playing. I recommend him to anyone wanting to learn more about playing jazz guitar.
I have taught private guitar, piano, bass and drum lessons since the late 70s in Salt Lake City, where I majored in jazz guitar performance, and since 1980 in Los Angeles. I make the lessons fun. Some of my students have received college scholarships and won cash prizes for music contests. All of them had fun while learning and improving on their instruments.
*** Lesson Details *** I am very enthusiastic and can teach students how to read. If they do not want to read music, they can learn to play by ear. I can also show them where to put their fingers. During piano lessons, I often accompa
ny students on guitar and suggest a scale for improvisation, so they can play the blues. During drum lessons, I often play bass so they can learn to groove.

I developed a desire later in life to learn how to play jazz and blues piano. I was very fortunate to start learning from Mike. He started me out with basic blues and over time I progressed into many of the jazz standards. Because he is also an accomplished guitar player, at all his lessons, he would accompany me while I played the new piece of music I was learning. He also does this if you are learning the guitar. This was very helpful in giving me a more complete musical experience, as I also learned to hear and play with other musicians. He is an extremely patient and upbeat instructor, constantly giving me positive reinforcement. I would get a new tune to practice as I became more proficient with the previous one. Each new tune became progressively more challenging. Having taken lessons from Mike for many years, I also witnessed his teaching and developing of younger kids. He really works with them in a positive way giving them as much time as they need to turn the corner on each tune and progress forward. They seem to enjoy it and he has developed some great musicians. As part of his instruction, he gives all his students an opportunity to participate in a Jazz Band he puts together. In this Jazz Band he leads all the players in working together though a jam session. Other players may include guitarists, brass players and keyboardists, young and older. Frankly I am forever grateful to Mike for helping me create the foundation to play jazz and blues piano both alone and with a group of other musicians.
I want to make sure my students have a good time learning percussion but I also want to make sure they learn a lot..! I always make sure to ask my students what they want to learn and what their favorite music is... after that, I figure out what type of lessons to plan out.

Lesson details: My main goal as a teacher is to help my students reach their goals. What students should have: All students should (but don't have to) have a 3-ring binder to organize handouts in...!

Orchestral percussion specialties: keyboard percussion (marimba, xylophone, glockenspiel, vibraphone, chimes), snare drum, timpani, bass drum, cymbals, tambourine, triangle, orchestral excerpts, etudes, technique, important literature, and practice techniques.

Emerson is an amazing instructor. Besides being a very knowledgeable and gifted musician, he’s patient, kind, and makes learning the drums fun. What I appreciate most about Emerson is that he’s interested in helping me reach my goals. I happen to be interested in learning Latin style drums and lucky for me, Latin is one (of many) of Emerson’s specialties. So many people have told me that Latin is hard to learn, but in four short lessons, I already know how to play a basic Bossa Nova beat. Emerson is a very organized and efficient instructor. We work with handouts, video (I record him as he instructs) and reading exercises from a book. A highlight for me in our sessions is when Emerson accompanies my drum playing with another instrument, the piano for example. I really get the feeling like we’re having a little jam session and it's fun because I can hear that I'm making music and that's an awesome feeling.

Ryan is knowledgable along a wide spectrum of hand percussion, including more traditional forces, such as Latin percussion technique (conga/bongos/shakers/accessory percussion), as well as the middle eastern tabla (doumbek/derbekke), indian tabla, and mallet percussion, such as timpani instruction. Ryan teaches on a MalletKat which can be used for all keyboard percussion needs including marimba, xylo, and vibes. Ryan also has experience adapting all of these to the drum set or in being played in conjunction with a kit set up.
Ryan started his music with piano lessons at age four while lending his vocal talents in the recording booth for his musician/writer/ arranger father, Rick. Ryan was playing in piano recitals by age six, segued from keyboards to drums at age 14, and was subsequently accepted into the University of California, Santa Barbara percussion program after high school.
While an undergraduate at UCSB, Ryan spent three years as the principal timpanist for the UCSB Symphony and five years as timpanist with the UCSB Wind Ensemble. Concurrently over the same five year period, he performed with a diver
sity of UCSB ensembles, Orchestra and Jazz combos, work with the College of Creative Studies department (CCS), and a variety of recording and recital work in and outside the university. Chiefly among these was the UCSB Percussion Ensemble, where Ryan performed on a variety of percussive instruments, in solo or featured pieces. He worked over two years as a percussionist with the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, with a focus on timpani. Ryan also focused on the Indian Tabla drums, a discipline he also taught through the Ethnomusicology department at the University after his graduation.
Ryan has studied with percussionist Mike Faux, and Greg Goodall, Hollywood Bowl Principal Timpanist, as well as world-class percussionist and composer William Kraft. For three years, Ryan studied under John Magnussen, currently teaching percussion at CSUN, and Jon Nathan, director of Ethnomusicology Jazz UCSB, and Principal Timpanist for the Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera.
Ryan was hired (by Patrick Lindley, Principal Musician, UCSB Dance) for over a year to ultimately perform full time as one of only two music accompanists for the UCSB Dance dept. modern dance classes. As accompanist, he worked with modern studio and master classes for visiting dance companies and artists performing in-concert at UCSB including Paul Taylor, Larry Keigwin, Santa Barbara Summer Dance, White Oak and Pilobilus. In addition to his role as music accompanist, Ryan guest-lectured rhythm and percussion classes for the dance department on a number of occasions. After moving to San Francisco in the fall of 2002, Ryan expanded his involvement in the role of accompanist to include ODC, SFDC, Joe Goode, Stanford dance and Laney college in Oakland.
Other professional and teaching experience includes work with LA movie and mainstream film music composer Aaron Martin, Ride Productions, and Hands On. In the instructional realm, Ryan has worked with all ages and abilities, ranging from children aged four to adults at the college level and beyond, in both individualized and classroom or group environments. Additionally, Ryan has taught drumkit to a number of local students in the Santa Barbara as well as Los Angeles and San Francisco areas.
In the progressive Santa Barbara, LA and San Francisco scenes, Ryan has played percussion for bands that recorded a full-length and demo-length albums respectively, performing throughout the state of California with his band, The Prototype. His current band project, Excessive Acts, performs regularly in the Los Angeles area. They are currently in the post-production phase of their first EP-length album.
*** Lesson Details *** Hello and welcome! The following paragraphs will provide you with an ample amount of information on my background, experience, and ability. I do, however, consider all of this information to be supplemental; the most important thing about any teacher of music is the ability to relate warmly with a student, to create an open and nurturing atmosphere in which the student is never made to feel uncomfortable or wrong. Everything is a process, and while there are always guidelines to be followed, music is ever in motion. Music is not absolute and rigid, but has a give and take. I always try to appeal to that same sense of flow in my own music exploration, as well as in my teachings to others.

Ryan is a professional drummer/percussionist with over 15 years experience performing and teaching to students of all ages in a wide variety of styles ranging from orchestral and chamber percussion to jazz, funk, rock, metal, as well as many ethnic musics such as those fund in Africa and South America, the middle east and India.
Instrumental techniques offered include drumset as well as hand percussion including conga, bongo, darbukka, tabla, and assorted percussion--double pedal or brush technique also offered. Odd meters are something of a specialty for those interested. In addition to technique, Ryan also incorporates the essential music theory, sight reading, ear training, associated with the professional musician. As Ryan has perfect pitch, he is especially suited to the latter, as well as specific tuning techniques for all tunable percussion--particularly of use in timpani performance, as well as drumming and singing instruction.
Ryan also provides mallet/keyboard instruction on a midi malletkat which is quite portable and can operate between two studios, both located within a short distance of each other.

Ryan has been teaching Drum lesson to my 8 years old son for last 3 months. My son is a very challenging student and has problem focusing and paying attention. I am really amazed that he actually learnt and playing music.
I have been playing and performing the drums for the past 10 years.
In a teaching situation I try and provide a relaxed and friendly environment in order to learn a students strengths and weaknesses. I want students to be able to learn at their own pace, and not to worry if they think they are not learning quickly enough.
I generally work as a for hire musician playing for various acts in the styles of rock, funk, blues, jazz, and even movie scores.
I have toured throughout California and have had the privilege to open for such artists as A Flock of Seagulls, Jennifer Leitham, Dan
iel Glass, and Jack Sheldon. I have recorded drums for movies including Stomp the Yard, and Obsessed; played with acts such as Big Dave LIttle, Brett Copeland, and Kenji Igus. I have played with such jazz musicians including Richard Simon and Roger Neumann.
I attended the AVPA from 2006 to 2009 and have a degree in Psychology.
*** Lesson Details *** In the lesson setting I want the student to become as comfortable with the drums as possible. I like to maintain a relaxed environment, allowing the student to move at his or her own pace. This in mind, I believe the fundamentals are the most important to learn.
Students will first learn the basic hand techniques needed for accomplished drum playing, before moving on to more complex ideas behind groove, and feel. Reading music and keeping effective time will be emphasized in early lessons.
I also like to teach students that drums are a musical instrument that is typically played with other musicians. A student will learn how to play and interact well with other musicians in a variety of musical settings.
I use a combination of books for teaching including: Syncopation by Ted Reed The All-American Drummer by Charley Wilcoxon The Drummer's Bible by Mick Berry and Jason Gianni Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone I will also use various drum charts and exercises as well as the use of videos and recordings.
After 3 to 6 months a student will be able to read drum notation and rhythms at a competent level and will be able to play basic drum beats on the drum kit as well as have a basic understanding of how to play with other musicians in various styles of music.
*** Studio Equipment *** Equipment includes two drumsets, drum pads, sticks, and instructional material.
*** Travel Equipment *** Can bring drums if necessary, would prefer to bring a drum pad. Expect the student to have drums.
