Mark T.

About Mark

Hello!! My name is Mark and I am YOUR teacher! (YOU just don’t know it yet)

Simply put, I love music… every facet of it, in fact! Music has been a huge part of my life! From starting on alto and tenor saxophones as a kid and then learning acoustic and electric guitars, to ripping scorching solos on stage with Chris Cagle and singing background vocals with Reba McEntire, music has always inspired me! Now I hope to inspire you with creative, challenging, and fun lessons!!

Long story short, (too late) ☺ at a young age I dove head first into music, but more importantly, the electric gui
tar! I learned everything about them from how they are constructed to how magnetic pickups make sound come out of an amplifier. Then came the true challenge… I started meeting others like me and before too long I was playing in bands and making music! (which is the ULTIMATE GOAL of playing any instrument when you get down to it)

After many years of self study and private lessons, I took the initiative to move from Texas to Los Angeles, California to go to Musicians Institute’s Guitar program. I honed my chops as I studied with Paul Gilbert, Scott Henderson, George Lynch, Raphael Moreira, and Robben Ford just to name a few. I graduated with honors and received my AA degree in September 2001. (3 days after 9/11) Learning is great, but I NEEDED to make music… so I played in many bands (heavy metal, reggae, pop, country, blues rock) and shared the stage with many amazing musicians along the way including members of Black Label Society, Dakota Moon, Korn, and many others.

I STILL wasn’t satisfied, so I decided to learn how to make commercial music and spent 7 years learning the craft of recording, mixing, and producing music. I went back to school eventually and graduated with honors (again) from LA’s Recording Institute of Technology in 2009. I also received outstanding mix and got my ProTools HD Operators Certifications.

WHERE IS ALL THIS LEADING? Well, I’m glad you asked! ☺ I have the unique ability to help sculpt your goals and tailor your training because of the vast wealth of experience I possess. Notice I didn’t say “knowledge?” I’m still learning! As I hope you will be for the rest of your life! Any truly great musician knows that they’ll never know it all!

My wife and I moved to Nashville in November of 2012 to continue our musical adventures! She’s a touring background singer and songwriter and one of my biggest inspirations…. Hope I can become one of yours!

Can’t wait to meet you!

I am a very easy going, friendly, patient guy (And I'm quite funny.. I think) who believes that learning music is built upon a strong relationship between teacher and student. This relationship involves good communication, honesty, open mindedness, and most importantly the desire to LEARN and have FUN. I approach teaching music by knowing and understanding the student's musical goals, and teaching fundamentals, theory, and technique through the style(s) of music that the student wants to learn. For beginners, I tend to teach basic techniques and chords through simple songs to get the student playing music as quickly as possible.

My three promises to you as a student:

1) I guarantee that you will have fun during the time you're with me! I know lessons can be intimidating and stressful, but they have to be fun and that's part of my job.

2) I promise that I will gently push you to be the best you can be but never ask you to do something that I think you won't be able to achieve with practice.

3) I stand behind my education and experiences: I've learned music from the best in the field and you will get nothing less than that from me during a lesson.

My three expectations of you:

1) Come willing to try new and different things in a low pressure environment. I don't bite...I swear.

2) Come prepared to play. Why? If you want to play guitar, you have to play. Relatively simple, right?

3) Come prepared to make mistakes. No lesson is perfect and no lesson should be. Lessons are your opportunity to make mistakes without being judged, so make mistakes, commit to not making the same ones the next time and enjoy and appreciate the praise and feedback you get along the way. Music is a journey that cannot be completed in a few one hour sessions, so I hope and expect that you won't treat it that way.

Now let's make music together!

Learned and improved my writing

I took songwriting lessons with Mark. I was looking to get to know the form and tools of songwriting to know what people were looking for and to make my songs better. He helped me out so much with music theory as you need that behind all songs and with helping me create some great songs. As i look back at my songs from when I started to now, they have grown and adapted so much for the better. My lyrics flow so much better and I know what people are looking for in the music industry as I have some great songs to show from these lessons. Mark is very smart guy in all music aspects, if your looking for lessons from guitar to songwriting to music theory, I would definitely recommend him. If you are willing to put in the time to learn and get better he will make sure of it!!!

I learned A LOT from Mark!!

Mark is a really knowledgable teacher who cares about your goals and progress. He is also a very patient and laid back person, (which made me feel better about trying new techniques since I was an absolute beginner when we started) and he REALLY took my guitar playing far. Now I understand music theory and how to apply it to my songwriting AND how to improvise over the chord changes in my songs. I'd also have to say he is very humble for how good of a guitar player he really is. You can learn a lot from Mark, and I still use and go through his curriculum. I would definitely recommend him to other students.

About Jonah

Hello! I believe that music is something everyone can do: it can be played alone or in pairs (and trios, quartets, etc). Playing music is extremely rewarding. It's about discovering your potential, and having fun doing it! Having played music for 25 years, and teaching for 12, I have experience as a performer, composer, and producer. I grew up playing cello before switching to guitar, and graduated from New England Conservatory of Music with a BA in jazz performance. Most recently, I moved to Nashville where I am currently training to be a Registered Piano Technician.

Whether you want to sit and compose by yourself, or let loose on stage in front of screaming fans, you will get there! In the first 3 to 6 months, we will cover basic music theory, technique, rhythm, and basic improvisation. After that, we can continue in any (and all) of these subjects, and begin to introduce ear training, the most essential element of your musical education. Overall, I want you to have fun and get what want out of your lessons.

He is a superior teacher! His musical ability is sine qua non. His ability makes it easy for me to learn from him. He began early with the cello, which he plays beautifully. He has also mastered other instruments. We play duets together and I enjoy playing with him very much. His theory is excellent; I have learned so much being his student. He has made me better and I feel more confident about my own playing and about myself.

I would definitely rate Jonah a 5 star teacher and would strongly recommend him to others.

We are so pleased with the instruction our son received this summer with Jonah. He is excellent with students. You can tell he cares about their progress and their personal goals and that they really learn with him as their teacher. We have taken lessons with other music teachers in the past with our older children, and we have not found one that takes as much time with the student and really cares that they learn the way Jonah has.

Laid back guy, great with kids, excellent musical knowledge

Jonah works with both of our sons teaching piano. He is positive and upbeat and encourages them to do their best. His credentials are impeccable with a wide-ranging and deep musical background/education. He expects success from the kids, he gently pushes them to succeed. He is always on time to our house and is trustworthy. We highly recommend Jonah.

Jack P.

Nashville, TN

I teach according to a students goals. If a student wants to learn to play some Taylor Swift songs for fun, I'll teach them how to play Taylor Swift. If a student wants to become a professional musician, I'll teach them how to be a professional musician. If a student wants to do something in between, I'm more than set up to do that as well. I will, of course, supplement this with lessons on music theory as traditionally taught to serious music students over the past few hundred years.

About Jack

Jack has been teaching private lessons since 2013 and is currently available to teach lessons at his home studio in East Nashville. Jack has helped students increase their confidence, break out of musical ruts, explore new musical ideas, and prepare for the rigors of an elite music school.

Jack trained at the prestigious Berklee College of Music between 2009 and 2013, where he received a dual Bachelor's degree in Guitar Performance and Songwriting. As an experienced professional in his field, Jack looks forward to helping new students achieve their goals. Jacks's teaching style is high ener
gy, pragmatic, and guaranteed to get students excited about music!

Jackson has an amazing grasp of the theoretical side of the fretboard. Being a graduate of Berklee College of Music, he has learned from the best and boy did he learn! Whenever I reach a dead end or become stranded with a question, Jack is bar none the first I call to help untangle the mess.

I am learning how to play and needed Ben to help me figure out what chords a song had in it. Ben was so patient and took the time to write down each one so that I could learn the song and practice it for a performance. He is a spectacular teacher and will help get you where you need to be as a musician.

I have taught guitar for 7 years and believe students should get to play what they want to play! Students are asked to come up with a list of songs and/or artists they would love to play. Through teaching chords, note reading and theory, the song possibilities are endless! I also can help the aspiring singer/guitar player to be able to both play and sing simultaneously.

About Rachel

Hello there! I'm Rachel C., a bass player and singer on the stage who also enjoys playing and teaching all stringed instruments. I have a degree from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in Music Education. I've taught lessons for over 7 years and truly love working with eager students of all ages. It's never too early or too late to pick up an instrument and make music! I look forward to working with you!

What Age is Best to Start Learning Guitar?
Is there a best age for learning guitar? We asked guitar teacher Linda L., who has taught young children, teens, adults, and seniors for her take... My opinion on the best age at which to start learning guitar has evolved over the years. I started teaching myself to play the guitar at the age of 14. The book that I used to teach myself featured photos of a 7-year-old girl demonstrating how each chord was to be played. The author of the book told the readers that he had this y
11 Ways to Practice Guitar While You Watch Shark Week

Sometimes I love to make a deep dent in the couch, play guitar, and watch TV for hours. A shuffle is a rhythm of 8th notes played in triplets, essentially playing 3/4 time over a 4/4 beat to make the music swing. Blues, pop, jazz, and rock musicians all use the shuffle. The blues shuffle is a fun pattern that is simple to absorb into your playing across many genres of music.
