Daniel D.

Kansas City, KS

I've been teaching guitar for almost ten years and work hard with each student to establish and meet their own goals. I'm focused on helping you become the player you want to be. Rather than applying a generic curriculum, I create my own lessons based on what each student likes and wants to learn. We can focus on a specific style or technique, or even a singular artist; whatever is required to help you become the player you want to be.

About Daniel

Dan is a teacher and guitarist from Kansas City, KS. As a teenager he studied blues and jazz with former B.B. King sideman Dwight Foster. This background aided him when he took classes in jazz improvisation and music composition at the University of Kansas. At KU, he started giving guitar lessons and teaching English Literature to help pay tuition. He also joined the blues-rock/metal hybrid Inphobic, a group that went on to play with Carlos Santana, Everlast, and Cheap Trick among others.

After finishing his MA at Pittsburg State University, he returned to Kansas City and began te
aching in the Kansas City, KS school district. His five years of high school teaching (to go along with another three at the college level) has showed him that being a great teacher is both the greatest challenge and the greatest reward. As a result, he has dedicated himself to combining that passion for teaching with his love for the guitar and music.

Over the last few years, he has developed guitar curriculum that both teaches students things they want to know as well as how to communicate with other musicians in almost any musical capacity. He frequently shows up at local jam sessions and plays studio sessions.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are very relaxed but still move at a fast pace. I realize that not all students learn at the same rate and in the same manner and I do my best to accommodate whatever the needs of the student might be. Students will learn a variety of styles but there always be an emphasis on their specific interests as it relates to the guitar.

A beginning student will be given a solid background in theory and in reading music as well as learning songs that they want to learn. In three months, the beginning student will be able to play basic songs and read music, as well as begin to apply theory to a variety of musical styles. In six months, the beginning student will be developing more difficult techniques on the guitar, beginning to learn the art of lead guitar and learning more complicated tunes. Intermediate and advanced students are welcome too, but they may want to focus on specific styles, techniques or songs.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Guitar, amp, etc.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Guitar, amp, etc. The student should contact the instructor if s/he needs to borrow a guitar for the lesson.

*** Specialties ***
Rock, Blues, Metal, Jazz, Improvisation, and Composition at all levels beginner, intermediate and advanced.

I have had two other guitar teachers in the past. Daniel far exceeds any of the previous two! I wouldn't hesitate for a nano-second to recommend him to others! If you are looking for a good guitar teacher, look no further.

Dan is a passionate teacher who makes the lesson fun!

Dan is patient and a great teacher. My son started learning how to play electric guitar with Dan and has developed a lot of progress in the past five months. Dan always shares the stories when teaching the lessons to make the lessons enjoyable. He has adapted his teaching style and lessons to suit my 7 year old beginner.

He is always on time, flexible and works with our schedule when we occasionally have conflicts. He encourages my son to ask questions and practice the variety of songs he teaches. I will not hesitate to recommend Dan if someone is looking for a knowledgeable and great teacher who cares about his students and teaches them what they want to know.

An absolutely fantastic teacher

I had been through 3 guitar teachers in just the past year before I finally found Daniel. While my previous teachers had all been very skilled and knowledgeable, Daniel was the first one who I felt actually took a sincere interest in helping me to achieve my goals. He consistently made a real effort to ensure we were focusing on what I wanted to focus on. He had a great habit of asking "Do you have any questions about the guitar that we haven't talked about yet?", and what was even better is I felt he genuinely wanted to know the answer. On top of all this, he is a phenomenal guitar player, a patient and articulate teacher, and a very friendly guy. I honestly cannot identify one deficit in his teaching style and system.

David E.

Kansas City, MO

Comprehensive instruction includes an unique approach to fretboard symmetry, troubleshooting technique and musical blocks. Applied to multiple styles, including pop, rock, jazz, and classical.

About David

*Now also offering online lessons*

Guitar

David picked up the guitar when he moved from his hometown of Phoenix, Arizona in 2001 at the age of 19 and hasn't looked back since. 7 years and countless hours of practicing, performing and teaching later, David plays at multiple venues in the Kansas City area while teaching from his studio at Guitar Source in Overland Park,, Southland Conservatory in Raymore, and in home tutoring service Mobile Music Teachers. David also teaches and records from his home studio in Raytown, MO where he offers lessons for home schoolers during the daytime hours.

As a guitarist David is motivated primarily by his passion for music. Growing up he was influenced by classical, jazz, and film scores. Since picking up the guitar he has been inspired by guitarists from such diverse backgrounds as Eric Johnson, Robben Ford, Pat Martino, Pat Metheny, Martin Taylor, and James Taylor, to name a few. Today David plays and teaches a variety of different styles, ranging from rock and blues to classical and jazz.

Piano

David started to play the piano after years of playing the guitar. Although a second instrument, it in many ways it was the first as everything David has aspired to on the guitar is pianistic, and he draws much of his inspiration on the instrument from piano players. Correspondingly, it wasn't long before David picked up the piano itself, studying privately first with Tatev Amir and later with Karen, Kushner, Professor of Piano Studies at UMKC. David applies many of the same principles to the piano that he does the guitar including stressing a comprehensive knowledge of music theory, self transcription, ear training and classical technique as well as the more traditional facets of piano pedagogy such as sight reading and rhythm work. Students learn music theory as applied to the keyboard, sight-reading, improvisation and the application of classical technique to modern styles.

As a pianist David is motivated primarily by his passion for music. Growing up he was influenced by classical, jazz, and film scores. Since picking up the piano he has been inspired by pianists from such diverse backgrounds as Art Tatum, Nicolai Lugansky, Oscar Peterson, and Bill Evans among others. Today David plays and teaches a variety of different styles, ranging from rock and blues to classical and jazz.

*** Lesson Details ***
I have extensive experience with all ages and skill levels. I use a curriculum specifically geared towards the guitar, as opposed to more traditional (and inferior) methods that emphasize note reading and piano pedagogy, my method will teach you music theory as it relates to the neck of the guitar and the music that the student are interested in. I am a fairly laid back teacher; we will go at your pace, but I do expect you to work hard.

With piano I use classical literature to develop technique but emphasize the development of a comprehensive understanding of music theory as applied to the keyboard. This includes but is not limited to studies in pop, rock, jazz and other style of contemporary piano.

*** Studio Equipment ***
#1) Dedicated music room seating for parents

#2) Practice/rehearsal room seating for parents

#3) Amplification provided and music stand.

#4) Keyboard/Piano for student use

#5) Broadband network, dual camera, file sharing and the latest technology utilized for online lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide a music stand, my instrument, curriculum materials, music paper materials and amplification (if needed). I expect the student to have their own instrument and potentially amplification. I provide a piano for instruction but I expect my students to have a piano or keyboard for practice at home.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical and jazz guitar, however I am fluent in most styles, including rock, blues, fingerstyle, and miscellaneous. I teach from Jay EuDaly's "Vertical Truth: Chordal Mechanisms for the Guitar" but I also supplement this with a variety of other curriculum.

In piano I specialize in classical piano as well as jazz and pop.

Michael R.

Kansas City, KS

For my guitar students, I have a lot of focus on understanding music more so than just the guitar. I like to teach the guitar by having my students learn actual songs, then go on to explain the ideas from a theoretical standpoint. I'm not just raising guitarists, but musicians!

About Michael

My name is Michael R. I am a drummer, percussionist, guitarist, and musician. I have been playing the drums for 15 years, the guitar for 10 years, and I've just reached my 5th year of teaching as of 2014. Unlike most extraordinary musicians, I'm not necessarily 'naturally gifted.' I got to where I am as a musician by practicing and studying for years and with hard work and determination, anyone and everyone can be a killer musician! When I first started, I never caught on quite as quick as others, so I understand completely that patience is the most important aspect of becoming a musician. If
you're looking for a stress free, patient, learn at your own pace learning experience, you've come to the right guy!

*** Lesson Details ***
I am not a strict teacher at all. I feel that learning music should be a fun and exciting! That being said, students can expect a more relaxed, patient, and stress free learning experience. Though I am laid back and patient, I am very thorough and feel that the fundamentals should not be skipped or over looked. I will teach everything that there is to know when becoming a drummer, guitarist, and ultimately a musician.

The most important thing to remember is that learning an instrument should be a fun experience, and I intend to keep it that way!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I've got an electric drum set and guitar as well as an amplifier. I don't have my own studio, so our lessons will be in the comfort of your own home!

*** Specialties ***
Rock, Blues, Funk, and RnB drumming styles as well as folk, country, and rock n' roll guitar styles.

Thomsons drum lessons

My son Thomson LOVED drum lessons with Michael. We are sorry to be leaving Kansas City and unable to continue with him. He taught Thomson how to play some of his favorite songs, and inspired him to learn about other types of music as well. Because Michael can also play the guitar, they were able to jam together which Thomson loved. He progressed very quickly because he had such a good time. He said that Michael was very patient and nice, and made him feel confident about his playing. We really hope that when we are back in town next summer that Michael will be available to teach again. We'd give him 10 stars if we could!

Brad A.

Peculiar, MO

I really enjoy teaching beginning guitarists. I love to see the joy in people when you can take them from the very beginning, and teach them how to play their favorite songs on the guitar.

About Brad

Professional musician with 20 years of performing experience, including 7 years in the U.S. Army Band. Have performed with many different types of bands, including jazz, rock, blues, alternative, country, and steel drum. Recorded 5 CD's. Achieved 1st. chair percussionist for 2 state honor bands, winning the position over 70 other students who auditioned. Helped several students to achieve 1st chair in their state honor bands as well. Have several former students who are now playing professionally. Helped several adult students, who had never played an instrument before, learn to play well enou
gh to play in local bands, achieving their lifelong dreams. Over 10 years of experience teaching guitar and drums to students ranging from small children to adults. Hobbies and interests include songwriting, singing, home recording, bicycling, running, weight lifting, history, traveling, movies and web design. Fun teacher who loves to help others learn to play an instrument.

*** Lesson Details ***
Instructor teaches both drums and guitar, depending on the student. This is unique because if you're studying drums, the teacher plays along on guitar. If you're studying guitar, the teacher can play along on the drums. In this way you learn to play in a band rather than just learning to play an instrument. Most importantly, it's fun!The focus for new students is to quickly teach them to perform in a band. For beginning guitarists, this means learning power chords, simple songs, and 2 scales, eventually progressing to more advanced songs and techniques. Most beginning drum students start by learning basic rock beats, and songs, eventually progressing to advanced fills, techniques and styles. Lessons are geared to the individual student's interests and abilities as well. For instance, percussion students sometimes focus on marching percussion techniques, jazz band skills, etc.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Ludwig s/l series drums, and Zildjian cymbals. Fender stratocaster electric guitar, Carvin all tube amp and Peavy trans-tube amp. Seagull acoustic guitar, handmade in Canada.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Instructor provides drum-sticks, mallets, a practice pad, and/or guitar and amp if applicable. If student is taking drum/percussion lessons, they need to have their own snare drum and /or drum-set and sticks. For guitar lessons, they need to have their own guitar and picks.

*** Specialties ***
Many years of experience in jazz and rock drumming. Many years of experience in marching percussion. Additional skills in country, blues and Latin drumming.

I also play and teach rock and folk guitar.

"Brad worked as a drum teacher for my son from the ages from 11-16. Brad encouraged by son day by day at each lesson, the encouragement resulted in the constant addition of new skills and great competence, Brad encouraged him to play in many different styles and situations and provided opportunities that allowed him to stretch himself out of his comfort zone in many situations. In outside situations my son was not required to "try out" due to his well-known skills."

"I would recommend Brad's teaching expertise to anyone interested in learning drums or continuing to expand their skills."

Kim Wheeler
"Brad started teaching our 11 year old son the guitar about 2 years ago. He offers reasonable rates and flexible scheduling. Our son was enthusiastic about music but discouraged after taking piano lessons and feeling like it was a chore. Within 3 months of taking guitar lessons with Brad, he had learned the power cords and could play over 5 songs by ear. Brad s method of teaching emphasizes learning the basics and immediately applying it to playing music a young student recognizes and can grasp. He understood that just learning notes in a book would not keep a young man s attention long, and instead emphasized learning cords by sound and developing good fingering and hand/eye coordination on the instrument. Brad emphasizes positive encouragement while adding layers that pushes our son s learning a little bit further with each lesson. After 2 years, our son can play a portfolio of songs including the solos, he s performed in school talent shows and he s learning to read music on the page just in time for school band. We couldn t be happier with our son s progress thanks to Brad s measurable teaching abilities."

Great Drum Instructor

Brad is currently working with me as a drum instructor. I had been working with another instructor for about 2 yrs when I realized it was time for change. Brad was a perfect fit when we met. Brad works with me once a week for anywhere from 1/2 to 1 hr depending on my needs. He has been so encouraging and supportive of everything I want to learn as well as what he feels I need to learn. My skills are improving everyday with the techniques he uses which fit me very well. I am very blessed to have him as my new drum instructor. He is very good at adapting to where you are and moving forward from there. I would recommend Brad to anyone who is ready to learn the drums no matter at what level you are currently playing.
