Basics of the language of music, also instrument specific

About Lynn

Your
relationship with music & your chosen instrument is unique &
will  be life long.  I look forward to sharing  your
excitement as we pursue the path to comfort, confidence & the
eventual, inevitable joy you will achieve with your new friend.

Whether  you are 5, 25, or  perhaps 75 years old when you make the decision to enter the world of music, you will be changing your life for the positive.

*** Lesson Details ***
In a very calm, easy going atmosphere you can expect to laugh a bit, as it is called 'playing' music! You will have an understanding of how to read & play a minimum 3
songs each month, & will be picking up enough music theory as it applies to your instrument each week to feel confident & inspired to continue on as far as you desire. We will learn how to 'play well with others' in informal as well as more structured gatherings every few months, with no pressure, only compassion & encouragement.

For those wishing to join in the fun of playing bluegrass music, we will start out with technique exercises, scales, basic melodies & accompaniment patterns to prepare you to learn this unique & exciting style of American music. There are many gatherings in the area called 'Pickin' Parties' that I want to get you ready to participate in as soon as is humanly possible.

If you are one of those brave souls undertaking the lovely but challenging fretless instrument, the violin, my main focus is to get you started with the all the necessary basic techniques - holding the instrument & bow correctly, getting the best possible tone & pitch using efficiency & accuracy, mixed with a great deal of ear training & heart.

Specific songs you'd like to learn? Your reward for accomplishing what I deem necessary on whichever instrument you've chosen will be for us to listen to your desired piece & writing it out in either or tablature or standard notation.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lesson studios contain piano, electronic keyboard, electronic drum set, music stand, tuner, metronome, manuscript books available for purchase, easy parking in the well lit front lot.

*** Travel Equipment ***

Barbara M.

Virginia Beach, VA

All music theory concepts covered and utilized during lessons; scales and chord formations.

About Barbara

Music has been an integral part of my world, playing a major role in both my personal and professional life. I embrace the chance to be immersed in it, to share my enthusiasm for and expertise in the area of the music education experience, promoting creative development and student performance skills.

I am an original New Yorker, but have lived in Virginia Beach for the past 12 years. I began studying piano at the age of 8 and have not stopped playing since. It is a gift and a joy to be able to share my love of music performance with people of all ages and abilities. I have also sung in man
y choirs in addition to performing professionally on the piano and the guitar, both as a soloist and ensemble member.

I rejoice in the success that I see in my students as they learn and gain appreciation for the gift of music. They become more and more eager to share and more and more open to the possibilities ahead.

*** Lesson Details ***
I listen well to my students. They are free and encouraged to express their goals and soon, they become more and more comfortable doing so. They begin to understand that even though I am their instructor, we are working as a team and that my goals for them are directly tied to the goals they have set for themselves.

My teaching style is natural, relaxed and yet, very enthusiastic, all at the same time. I have patience in abundance and my continual student affirmation is well received. I give most attention to personalizing instruction for each of my students. My passion for musical expression is contagious and readily shared. It is a joy to teach music, to contribute to the growth and delight that I witness through a student's progress.

I have taught music to both children and adults, from beginner to advanced levels. My teaching approach remains the same, save for the goals that suit the specific student, which we discover early on, sometimes even at the first session, together, right from the start. My beginning students receive the attention necessary to encourage their desire to persevere, which includes positive feedback (which is abundant) and a teaching style that fits his/her level of learning. My student's success is my goal. This is my jubilant mission.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, guitars, amp @ mini-amp.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I own 4 guitars, 1 classical, 2 acoustic/electric, and 1 electric, which I can provide for the lesson, if necessary.

My granddaughter took lessons from Barbara for 2 months, and then had to stop due to personal circumstances. During the time she was with Ms Barbara she learned a great deal and made a lot of progress. Barbara was patient and understanding and put the lessons to my 6 year old granddaughter in ways that she could understand. If our circumstances should change in the future I would definitely bring my granddaughter back to Barbara for piano lessons. Thank you Barbara - I think you helped instill a love of piano in my granddaughter!

Robert S.

Virginia Beach, VA

Music theory is always incorporated into piano lessons. It is crucial to understand how music works. I will use theory to help you understand what you are playing and how to use it to your advantage when composing or writing songs.

About Robert

My name is Robert S. I'm 30 years old. I teach voice and piano (beginner/intermediate/advanced and all ages starting as young as 5). I have taught piano for over four years now and have a knack for kids. I've had ample experience in music performance - touring around the world playing concerts in countries like Indonesia, Australia, Russia, and Japan - was a touring member for the Norfolk based rock group, MAE (Capitol Records, Tooth & Nail Records). Currently I perform regular gigs around Hampton Roads, solo and with bands. My expertise is piano and singing but I have a multi-instrumental und
erstanding of music (proficient in piano, guitar, drums, bass, etc).

"My goal with each student is to help instill a desire and passion to explore the deeper side of music. I try to keep my lessons fun, exciting, and interactive. I teach the fundamentals as music theory is crucial to understanding music, but I also teach on how to feel the true emotions in music. I believe that each student has his or her own personal musical journey. I'm sensitive to that and want to give each student a head start on that journey. Teaching another person how to play, understand, and feel music is something that makes me come alive."

*** Studio Equipment ***
I own two digital pianos, both with weighted keys. And I recommend that each of my students has a piano of their own with weighted keys.

*** Travel Equipment ***
If need be I can bring a digital piano with me for in-home lessons.

My 6 year old son enjoys taking lessons with Robert, almost as much as he enjoys showing off what he's learned after each lesson! We are very pleased with Robert and will continue with him for as long as my son's interest to learn and grow remains.

Danielle F.

Virginia Beach, VA

I was a big time music theory nerd in High School and College. In fact, I never missed a question in 4 full semesters of ear training at JMU! I'd love to help your student understand the theory behind the music they love, whether it is alongside applied lessons or on its own.

About Danielle

Hello! My name is Danielle and I'm a classical strings teacher (don't worry - I teach the fun stuff too!). I've been playing violin since age 5, viola since age 13, and 'cello since age 18. I have Bachelors Degrees in Violin Performance and Music Education from James Madison University, and I play both Violin and Viola in Symphonicity, the volunteer orchestra in Virginia Beach.

I've taught everything from private lessons to private school to public school and am a truly passionate teacher. I currently teach general music, choir and strings at an elementary school but I love to fill my night
s/weekends with private students - that's where the real fun is!

I've taught ages 4-44 and all skill levels. I take particular pride in developing technique and fundamental skills while keeping lessons light hearted and fun! It is my ultimate goal to spark a love and passion for music in each of my students.

I always encourage students to explore music on their own and bring me repertoire that they'd like to play (from their favorite movies, TV shows, video games, etc.). Those are a great and engaging supplement to the solo repertoire I choose!

Send me a message to get to know more about me and my teaching. I look forward to hearing from you!
Musically,
Danielle
