First Impressions

They say first impressions are lasting, well Dan C. jumped right in and and set a very comfortable learning environment. As a novice beginner (Bass) I appreciated that and believe it or not I actually learned something in notes after just one lesson. Even with beginner mistakes he encouraged me to keep going until I got it right, and I did.I am a 20 year Navy VET and I've taught and know a good teacher when I meet one. Dan is one. Also, the take lessons organization has been very professional and timely in all of my questions etc.... I've made a great decision going with them!

Dan's Feedback

January 23, 2011: In my opinion Dan is a fine instructor, very friendly and easy to talk to. My son took guitar lessons several years ago, he was taught in a style that went straight to playing songs by tablatureHe could not read the notes, so I appreciate Dan teaching me to read the notes and learn the timing. I appreciate the way that he encourages me and in a tactful way pushes me to play better. When his alarm goes off to signal the lesson is over, he doesn't just pack up and rush off. He will take the time to finish whatever we are working on and let me know what I need to work on to prepare for the next lesson. .....Thanks Dan!!![Update] December 6, 2011: I could not be happier that I had Dan as my guitar instructor over this past year and if not for obtaining a full time job on top of full time college I would be continuing my lesson with him. He is always professional while also being able to put a smile on your face. Most of all he is just a great guy that's fun to play with. He is also very good at judging and predicting your abilities and matching them up with songs to learn; Songs that you know and like, so as you are learning the song, timing is easier to get down and you really have fun learning.I picked one song to learn, he let me know that it may be a little too advanced for me but without discouraging me. I should have listened, because that song had me so discouraged and frustrated that I would not pick up the guitar for days. He is so easy to talk with I was able to call him at home. He was able to motivate me to practice a different way and the next lesson I was moving on to another song. Dan is a huge asset to your organization and certainly the more instructors you have like Dan the more your company will flourish.

I would like to write a follow up review about Ms. Barbara.

I have been taking singing lessons for about 5 months with Ms. Barbara.
When I came to Ms. Barbara I had a few hurdles I needed help and assistance in. The end goal was to be able to have my performance on stage. Ms. Barbara composed the right vocal exercises for me to practice so my voice becomes stronger and more stable, that the breath taking is correct and will allow me to hold the notes i need better and even sing high notes.

I went on stage feeling happy, excited and confident. My performance was a success!
Thank You Ms. Barbara!!

Barbara is very musical, very talented and very attuned to my needs. She is not only a singing teacher or a pianist, she is all and more. Most importantly, she is a mentor.

Daniel K. Virginia Beach, VA

I have 25 years of Music Theory training and have taught myself to play the guitar, ukulele, banjo, and the cello. I teach introductory guitar and aim to make those early years on the instrument - fun! I give my guitar students a well-rounded introduction to music theory so that they too may explore different types of instruments as they grow in their musical abilities.

I primarily teach from the Hal Leonard series - one that I believe does a great job of introducing guitar students to note reading (as they learn to pick) and various levels of chords (for strumming). I have specialized in helping students transition from one instrument to another. I have been known to teach both piano and guitar to the same student at the same time...helping them to see the connections between the two.

About Daniel

New to the Virginia Beach area, I have 6 years of professional teaching experience and 25 years experience as a performer. I combine these skills to teach music in a way that prepares students to reach their musical goals. Although I have a passion for music, my day job is as an environmental scientist. I have a long history of teach math and science with non-profits and at the college level. I offer tutoring services for multiple levels of math and science. *** Lesson Details *** Each lesson will involve a review of assigned work from the previous lesson and the introduction of new concept and work to reinforce it. Aside from lesson book assignments I work with the student to choose special solo pieces that we can work on together. *** Studio Equipment *** Roland Digital ...

My 6 year old daughter loves her piano lessons!

My 6 year old daughter has been taking weekly, in-home piano lessons with Dan for several months now. Dan is great at keeping her focused, while making it fun. She has already learned so much from him, and she looks forward to her lesson every week. Dan is very professional and punctual. We have been very happy with his teaching, and highly recommend him!

Guitar lessons are tailored to the individual student. Young children I teach music fundamentals and reading along with chords and popular music. Adults are goal oriented and generally know what they want to play.

I would love to teach some contemporary Christian music!

About Karen

Hello and thanks for checking out my, 'I love me' paragraph ; ). But really this is about YOU. It's about how my teaching and life experiences may help you along your personal musical journey. I've learned a great deal in my 20 years of teaching; - patience - persistence - keep it fun - change it up It's my belief that music fundamentals are critical and we will create a solid musical foundation by learning the language, understanding the critical issues of timing, rhythm, and reading. I enjoy working with all ages but specialize in children and adults that act like children! Stay a child! Learn something new. What are you waiting for?!

Rachel G. Hampton, VA

I have a music performance degree (violin) from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and have been playing guitar since 1996. I have taught many students since 2002, including some with learning or physical disabilities. I love teaching, and I'm a patient and encouraging teacher (if I may say so myself!), with an effective, fun, and relaxed teaching style. we will get you playing some great music!

About Rachel

Hi, there! My name is Rachel, and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2002, and have loved helping my students learn to read and play, discover their own love of music, and conquer their fears of performing (so much "proud mama bear" happening!). In 2003, I earned my violin performance degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where I also studied piano and vocal pedagogy. I'm an encouraging and fun person to work with (if I may say so myself!), and my teaching style is fun, positive, and relaxed. I have worked with many students, including some with learning disabilities, physical limitations, PTSD, and just plain ol' stage fright! I work with you to set your own goals, and I look forward to helping you reach them... It's what I love about what I do.

I have been taking theory lessons from Rachel for several months now to help learn the guitar. Learning theory can be very complex and quite a daunting task for a new music student. What I really appreciate is Rachel's patience and ability to try different approaches with me if a certain method doesn't quite resonate. She communicates and asks questions about the material she's going over to ensure that I'm comprehending what she's teaching. Another aspect that I'm very appreciative of is that Rachel gives me small, bite sized "chunks" of information that is easier to digest so that I'm not overwhelmed with learning too much at once. I intend to continue my musical journey with Rachel and also take on vocal lessons with Rachel as time permits. Her personality is very warm and personable and her commitment to helping others pursue their music goals really shines through. I consider Rachel to be a very well rounded musician and a master at her craft. I admire her musicianship and hope to attain her level of confidence and abilities as I pursue my own musical journey!!!

Viola · Online

I have always wanted to learn to play the viola but time has always been a fickle mistress with me so the viola I bought in late 2014 barely got played because of nursing school. I had an online violin lesson with Taylor Davis to support her new album and it gave me the idea to start taking lessons through skype. I spent my time looking through all the instructors on takelessons and chose Rachel because she plays the five string violin, which helps her understand both worlds and what can cross to violas and what can't. I took the plunge and signed up for lessons with her and it was one of the best decisions I've made.

Rachel is very knowledgeable and willing to work around a schedule, she's very quick to praise you when you get something right and also quick to correct to prevent bad habits from forming. Due to my inability to take lessons in real life I chose to take lessons from her but now that I am taking lessons from her I don't think I'd change to an in person instructor if I had the option.

Thank you Rachel for taking on someone who loves classical music and no idea how to play and starting me on the journey of one day playing the Walton viola concerto and the Vieuxtemps viola sonata.
