I teach a wide array of levels. Whether you are picking up the instrument for the first time or you have been playing for years, I will work with your level and continue to help you improve.
Instruction for fundamentals and techniques of clarinet as a primary instrument (or doubling instrument) in both classical and jazz styles.
Must supply own clarinet -- I would be willing to help find a student instrument. Can teach all ages.
Beginner clarinetists will learn to read music, and begin by learning the parts of the instrument, and the fundamentals of breathing and posture, with simple songs soon to follow.
Intermediate clarinetists will expand their repertoire and technique, and begin work on important orchestral excerpts and solos, with an eye towards competition. Bass clarinet may be explored at this point.
Advanced clarinetists will continue to polish technique and expanding their repertoire, with a focus towards audition preparation and competition. Bass clarinet, A clarinet, C clarinet, or any other member of the clarinet family may be explored further at this time.
I have been playing sax/clarinet for over 10 years. I regularly gig in the Boston area with a variety of bands ranging from Jazz, Funk, Hip-hop to Classical. I am finishing up my degree at the Berklee in sax performance with a concentration in Jazz. I like to find what inspires my students and build the curriculum around that. I think a healthy balance of theory and harmony is important while at the same time not forgetting about playing music, because lets face it, that's what its all about!
We will focus on good sound production as the basis for intonation and good tone quality from the clarinet. We will study a variety of different exercises to develop fluency on the clarinet in terms of music reading, and playing scales etc. There will also be some time spend on improvisation to develop an ear for music and a comfortable relationship with the clarinet.
