If You Can Talk, You Can Sing - NYC Voice Lessons

By Marjorie K. - New York City Singing Teacher

As a singing instructor based in NYC, I have always felt that there is no such thing as a bad student, only bad teachers. If you have a good teacher then you will in turn become a good student.

When a new student comes to me, I begin the lesson by telling the student right away that my motto is “If you can talk you can sing, and I guarantee it” - therefore the responsibility to get this student to sing well is mine, not theirs since they are paying me to help them find their best voice.

Once this is understood, the student can then relax, begin the process of trusting me and open up for the experience of learning to sing. I also make sure the student thinks of the lesson as a mini vacation from everything that has happened before the lesson and anything that will happen after. This allows for complete concentration during each session.

In addition to teaching private singing lessons in New York City, I give performance classes once a month. These singing classes address the elements of stage fright and performance anxiety which can’t be addressed in private voice lessons. Only in a class with other singing students will the student be able to learn skills to combat the nervousness that comes from the fear of singing in front of others.

I also present my students in local recitals twice a year to give them a performing goal to work towards. There is no better way to jump start the improvement of the voice than to have a performance you are preparing for. I teach all styles of singing and work from a classically trained throat, which is the basis of all correct singing. The only thing that changes is the style of music that one is singing.

In closing, the most important thing is that my students have fun in their lessons. After all, singing is a joyous experience and that is the reason we do it. One always has to remember that we sing because of the pleasure it brings to ourselves and others. Take New York City vocal lessons with me and experience this joy for yourself!

*** Lesson Details ***
Music is fun.

My personality is laid back, but I would never say that I teach that way.
There is a delicate balance between learning, fun, and concentration.

I have watched my students (especially the beginners) grow as people as well as musicians over the course of a few months. It's really amazing to watch someone do things they never thought they would do, sing or play something they thought was beyond them.
That alone makes what I do really special to me.

Dominic has been an excellent voice coach. Each week he uses appropriate techniques tailored for the unique challenges that I've been having and genuinely shows an interest in my progress. He's always pleasant to be with and continues to be punctual. On the weeks where my work schedule affects our slot, he's been more than obliging in finding another appropriate slot. Before each session, Dominic makes a point of reaching out to me to confirm all is ok. I would definitely recommend him to anyone who is looking for coaching at any level.

Elliott A.

New York, NY

For students with a pop or r&b influence, I like to keep things simple; Building an understanding of legato line and freedom from tension through technical exercises that then translate directly into songs.

About Elliott

I am a classically trained singer living, working, and teaching in NYC. I have a degree in vocal performance from The University of Maryland at College Park. While in the D.C. Metro area I performed as a chorister and soloist at The National Shrine, Metropolitan A.M.E Church, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. My exposure to a wide range of music, from baroque to contemporary gospel and musical theater, has strongly influenced my teaching. My goal is always to help a student develop their own understanding and experience of singing in a way that is fun, interactive, and personal
while also progressively building a strong technique.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are generally split between technical work/ warm-ups and repertoire. I like to adapt my concepts to a students individual personality and capability, in that sense I am flexible about the approach taken achieve optimal results. Every singer thinks and communicates differently and I see it as my job to figure out what will work best for you. I think that a foundation in a classical approach gives students the biggest tool kit with which to work. Once the fundamentals are firmly established, that singer then has the ability to approach any style of music in a way that is healthy and secure.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Programmable Digital Piano and Recording Equipment.

*** Specialties ***
The approach I take to the voice is based in the tradition of classical bel canto singing. It is always my goal to help students understand how to use their breath and body to produce sound that is free of tension and, therefore, beautiful.

In need of a vocal coach, I searched the Takelessons website and by what I call devine guidance I selected Elliott A. He has been my coach for a little over a year now and I would highly recommend him for his qualifications, passion for singing and his incredible teaching gift. Elliott provides a comfortable environment and really goes extra miles to ensure that concepts he teaches are practically understood. I started with many bad singing habits and poor technique and now I can definitely see great improvement in my technique and vocal freedom. I look forward to continue working with him until and beyond reaching my goal of greatness. In my opinion he's simply the BEST.

Elliot is a gem! He is everything I wanted in an instructor!

I met Elliot through a friend who is also taking lessons from him. As a beginner I was very specific in what I wanted in a teacher--someone who is patient, kind, structured and has no problem starting with the very basic fundamentals in singing. Elliot took me on as a student and has proven to be everything I could have hoped to find in a teacher! Lesson after lesson I feel more confident and capable. I feel stronger in my voice and become more and more excited for singing. Elliot's knowledge of singing technique are showcased throughout the lesson as he explains exactly what is needed to be adjusted in your technique and his patience is key to a full understanding of what is needed to be done. I highly recommend Elliot to any singer looking to train their voice, maintain technique, or broaden their range!

I used to sing in my high school days. Working with children made me realized I need to brush up on my "skills"'. I was sounding rusty. Besides-my knowledge of the terminology, etc was fading away. Working with Emily has been wonderful. She has given me the confidence I needed. In addition, she knows her stuff. Very professional and knowledgeable. Her approach to teaching made me so comfortable. I would highly recommend Emily! She's your gal for the voice training. She also does piano lessons! Thanks Emily!!

Indigo S.

Brooklyn, NY

Establish healthy technique, undo bad habits, and free your natural voice, enabling you to sing in the style of your choice.

About Indigo

Indigo has been working in the performing arts since she was biting ankles, first as a dancer and vocalist, and later as a guitarist. She's composed music for and/or sung dozens of international television commercials, spots on Law and Order and songs in Films premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, and as a lead guitarist and vocalist, toured the US, Canada, Europe and Iceland, extensively, performing in hundreds of theaters and rock clubs around the world, including-- Madison Square Garden, BAM, The Beacon Theater, Music Hall Of Williamsburg, The Bowery Ballroom, Club Nokia (LA), The Santa
Barbara Bowl, The Chicago Theater, Baby's All Right, The Mercury Lounge, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass (SF), Pickathon (Portland)

As a teacher, Indigo's method has, at it's core, a commitment to the idea of teaching a man to fish rather than giving him a fish, and every student, regardless of age or experience will be taught to understand, first and foremost, how music works, so that he or she comes away, not only with the skills to play the material covered in the lessons, but, eventually, the ability to teach themselves any other material they're interested in.

With an emphasis on ear training, her natural approach to learning theory, makes even the most wary or challenged student understand with ease, and find pleasure in the process of learning. Rote memorization is eliminated and replaced by a deep understanding, which grows naturally, while technique improves alongside it. Students quickly find themselves able to play, sing and understand things they'd previously only dreamed of.

These building blocks of music are the same regardless of the style of music you're interested in, but technique will be tailored to your specific interests, and from the start, a portion of each lesson will be devoted to learning the material of your choice.

Indigo also specializes in coaching songwriters, and can, in a gentle and non-invasive way, help to guide you through the process of both mastering craft, and establishing your own individual voice as a writer.
