If You Can Talk, You Can Sing - NYC Voice Lessons

By Marjorie K. - New York City Singing Teacher

As a singing instructor based in NYC, I have always felt that there is no such thing as a bad student, only bad teachers. If you have a good teacher then you will in turn become a good student.

When a new student comes to me, I begin the lesson by telling the student right away that my motto is “If you can talk you can sing, and I guarantee it” - therefore the responsibility to get this student to sing well is mine, not theirs since they are paying me to help them find their best voice.

Once this is understood, the student can then relax, begin the process of trusting me and open up for the experience of learning to sing. I also make sure the student thinks of the lesson as a mini vacation from everything that has happened before the lesson and anything that will happen after. This allows for complete concentration during each session.

In addition to teaching private singing lessons in New York City, I give performance classes once a month. These singing classes address the elements of stage fright and performance anxiety which can’t be addressed in private voice lessons. Only in a class with other singing students will the student be able to learn skills to combat the nervousness that comes from the fear of singing in front of others.

I also present my students in local recitals twice a year to give them a performing goal to work towards. There is no better way to jump start the improvement of the voice than to have a performance you are preparing for. I teach all styles of singing and work from a classically trained throat, which is the basis of all correct singing. The only thing that changes is the style of music that one is singing.

In closing, the most important thing is that my students have fun in their lessons. After all, singing is a joyous experience and that is the reason we do it. One always has to remember that we sing because of the pleasure it brings to ourselves and others. Take New York City vocal lessons with me and experience this joy for yourself!

I am also a composition teacher. I work with composition students from beginner to advance. My composition students, over the years, range from all ages starting at 7. My students, after the first year, have been able to write string quartets and piano trios. My advanced students have entered competitions all over the country and are very successful in their composition practice. Some of their compositions have been performed in famous concert halls and schools.
As a vocal coach, I work with students of all ages. The repertoire that I recommend to beginner students includes Disney, Broadway and classical music. For intermediate and advanced vocal student, I have successfully prepared them for competitions, Broadway and University auditions as well as personal enjoyment.
Most recently I held a piano, composition and vocal recital for my students at the world famous Steinway Hall in New York City. I believe that some students work better when there is motivation for performance activities. For that reason I host these type of events. Students that decide they want to take place in these events perform among all levels. I offer these performance opportunities as an invitation. Each student has a choice as to whether they would like to perform.

Elliott A.

New York, NY

For students with a pop or r&b influence, I like to keep things simple; Building an understanding of legato line and freedom from tension through technical exercises that then translate directly into songs.

About Elliott

I am a classically trained singer living, working, and teaching in NYC. I have a degree in vocal performance from The University of Maryland at College Park. While in the D.C. Metro area I performed as a chorister and soloist at The National Shrine, Metropolitan A.M.E Church, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. My exposure to a wide range of music, from baroque to contemporary gospel and musical theater, has strongly influenced my teaching. My goal is always to help a student develop their own understanding and experience of singing in a way that is fun, interactive, and personal
while also progressively building a strong technique.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are generally split between technical work/ warm-ups and repertoire. I like to adapt my concepts to a students individual personality and capability, in that sense I am flexible about the approach taken achieve optimal results. Every singer thinks and communicates differently and I see it as my job to figure out what will work best for you. I think that a foundation in a classical approach gives students the biggest tool kit with which to work. Once the fundamentals are firmly established, that singer then has the ability to approach any style of music in a way that is healthy and secure.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Programmable Digital Piano and Recording Equipment.

*** Specialties ***
The approach I take to the voice is based in the tradition of classical bel canto singing. It is always my goal to help students understand how to use their breath and body to produce sound that is free of tension and, therefore, beautiful.

In need of a vocal coach, I searched the Takelessons website and by what I call devine guidance I selected Elliott A. He has been my coach for a little over a year now and I would highly recommend him for his qualifications, passion for singing and his incredible teaching gift. Elliott provides a comfortable environment and really goes extra miles to ensure that concepts he teaches are practically understood. I started with many bad singing habits and poor technique and now I can definitely see great improvement in my technique and vocal freedom. I look forward to continue working with him until and beyond reaching my goal of greatness. In my opinion he's simply the BEST.

Elliot is a gem! He is everything I wanted in an instructor!

I met Elliot through a friend who is also taking lessons from him. As a beginner I was very specific in what I wanted in a teacher--someone who is patient, kind, structured and has no problem starting with the very basic fundamentals in singing. Elliot took me on as a student and has proven to be everything I could have hoped to find in a teacher! Lesson after lesson I feel more confident and capable. I feel stronger in my voice and become more and more excited for singing. Elliot's knowledge of singing technique are showcased throughout the lesson as he explains exactly what is needed to be adjusted in your technique and his patience is key to a full understanding of what is needed to be done. I highly recommend Elliot to any singer looking to train their voice, maintain technique, or broaden their range!

The total package

I have been studying with Elliott for almost two years now and I could not be happier with the progress that we have made. Not only is he very good at communicating what I need to improve upon in the lesson, but also to help me to understand myself so that I remember and make it a habit. He's very reliable and professional, but also he makes a comfortable environment where one feels at ease and never afraid to voice opinions or concerns. I cannot wait to see where this next year takes us. :) He's also great with giving a healthy balance of encouragement in addition to critique.

Asuka U.

New York, NY

10 years teaching experience in various style of music(Classical, Pop, Rock, Broadway). Accompanied for students' auditions.
Specializing in sight singing in fixed do style.

About Asuka

I started my musical training as a pianist at YAMAHA institute at age 4 in Japan. I was selected to enter perfect pitch class. It was designated for students who have perfect pitch and potentials to be professional musicians.

I enjoyed playing piano and electric piano and won the 1st prize at Kitakantou Electric Piano Competition hosted by YAMAHA institute. Because of the intensive training, I have been accompanying my students' recitals and performance exams.

As much as I enjoyed playing piano, I discovered that I also love singing, so I started to take singing lessons and majored in vo
cal performance during my college days.

Since I have graduated, I have been performing opera professionally. My career highlights include roles as Pamina (Die Zauberflote) with Opera Manhattan Studio, Frasquita (Carmen) with One World Symphony, Zerlina (Don Giovanni) and Clorinda (La Cenerentola) with Capitol Heights Opera, Alice (Le comte Ory) with West Side Opera Society, Adele (Die Fledermaus), Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro), and Myrrhine (Lysistrata) with Opera Avanti, Gilda (Rigoletto) with Academie Internationale d'Ete de Nice, and The First Spirit (Die Zauberflote) with the Opera Company of Brooklyn.

My international credits include studies at the Academy Internationale d'Ete de Nice, France; the Daniel Ferro Vocal Program in Chianti, Italy; the International Vocal Arts Institute in Tel Aviv, Israel; and an appearance at the Young Artist Concert Series in Tokyo, Japan.

As a versatile singer, I was presented as an aspiring opera singer on the website of Maybelline New York. My voice was featured in short films for NEC, the Japanese technology company.

I was also selected as a finalist at the Opera Idol Competition at Lincoln Center, the Hariclea Darclee Voice Competition in Romania, and the Mario Lanza and Elaine Malbin Vocal Competition. In the summer 2014, I received a scholarship to perform at The Savannah Voice Festival that is founded by Metropolitan Opera/Grammy Award Winner Opera Star Mr. Sherrill Milnes

Besides being an opera singer, I have been teaching piano and voice for 10 years. I have been fortunate to study with the world renowned teacher Mr.Gerald Martin Moore and would like to share my skills and experience with you. Since I perform often, I can coach you how to perform on stage in addition to building solid technique and languages. Also, I have taught various kinds of music, such as Rock, Broadway musicals, Pop music, so we can work on all kind of music.

I look forward to teaching you soon!

*** Lesson Details ***
My students can expect to improve their skills and start to enjoy music more as we work together.
I believe that learning music is fun and enjoyable. However you also need to be serious and focused.
I can demonstrate various and specific techniques, phrasing, and interpretation and will always coach on how to develop your skills. However, I feel it is important for students to think critically on their own and take the first try at solving a problem themselves. I cannot emphasize enough that primarily it is you who find the ways to improve. Leaning music is a collaboration between teachers and students. I hope that through my lessons, students will become more self-sufficient and confident as musicians.
Let me help you become a better musician.

I had an audition for a musical and I had to learn a lot of songs to sing. I took singing lessons from Asuka. This was my first time taking singing lessons in NYC so I was a little nervous but she was so friendly, kind, and fun. Asuka plays the piano very well and her teaching skills are extremely professional. She makes you feel very comfortable. And guess what? I got the lead role in Cats!! I couldn't have done it without her help!

New York, NY

We'll start off by talking through your goals for your voice and what you want to achieve from taking lessons. We will work on different techniques that make up a great voice and then apply what you learned to the music you love. Lessons are fun and we will work hard to bring out your best voice and create a sound you love!

About Rachel

There are lots of reasons people take singing lessons...a dream of performing for crowds, wanting to melt faces at karaoke, not being embarrassed when singing in the shower... But the common goal is finding your voice and creating a sound you love. My studio is designed to create a space where that process is comfortable and fun! Lessons will start wherever you’re at and go at your own pace towards your specific goals.

I was trained at the School of Creative Arts in Sydney, Australia and specialize in pop, rock and indie rock vocal technique. I work with a lot of beginners as well as peopl
e in bands and songwriters.

I'm from an extremely musical family and have always loved singing. (I almost pushed my parents over the edge as a kid because I would hum CONSTANTLY...) I lived in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the US of A growing up and then moved to Sydney, Australia after high school to study music. I've been running a vocal studio in San Diego for the past few years and have now relocated to NYC.

If you don't see a time available in my schedule that works for you please feel free to contact me. Things are always moving and changing!

Kathryn Z.

New York, NY

All levels of voice are taught, geared to whatever is your musical specialty but using a technique stemming from classical voice.

About Kathryn

Kathy believes that variety is the spice of not only life, but also music. Raised singing folk music with a musical family (think accordions, guitars and lots of vocal harmonies), she learned guitar and piano at an early age, but began singing even earlier.

Her quest to give the world the best her vocal cords could offer led her to obtain an undergraduate degree in vocal performance from the University of Nebraska (where she graduated honorable mention, named with the vocal department's Outstanding Senior in Music award, and also obtained a minor in theatre) and a master's degree in musi
c from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Both of these degrees emphasized classical singing technique, and through this study Kathy gained a solid foundation for her musical craft.

Once out of school, Kathy then sought to begin creating HER music and HER sound, a challenge which continues to manifest itself even today in a variety of ways. Kathy is now a singer/songwriter and performs often with her own band in which she sings, plays guitar, writes her own songs and arranges them for intricate backup harmonies and multiple instrumentation. A variety of influences are apparent in her music, including the musical genres of folk, pop, jazz, and yes, even hip hop. She has recorded three albums of her music and all have been received to critical acclaim.

She sings as a professional cantor at St. John the Baptist Church in Manhattan, and teaches private voice, guitar and piano lessons throughout the city of New York. She served for a time as the general music teacher for St. Dominic's School in the Bronx, where she was responsible for Pre-K through 8th grade music classes, and, true to form, she is often called upon in a multitude of situations to perform in a variety of musical genres. She is always pleased with the ever-changing musical scenery around her.

*** Lesson Details ***
A lesson with Kathy equals half of the allotted time being used to learn good technique (i.e., learning healthy vocal habits, singing vocalizes, learning to read music, playing scales, etc.) and the other half of the time singing and playing repertoire. The repertoire includes both pieces chosen by Kathy (always approved by the student) which excite and inspire the student's particular musical tastes while providing a new challenge in technique to be conquered, and also pieces brought in by the student; for example, if a student is working on music for a specific performance, etc., or if they just really like a piece and want to learn how to play or sing it, Kathy is always ready and willing to lend a hand and an ear!

Vocally, Kathy believes good basic technique is the same for every genre of music. Therefore, great emphasis is placed on learning to breathe and support your sound correctly as well as maintain good posture, rid your body of unwanted tensions, etc.; musical styles beyond that basic technique change only in small stylistic ways, and Kathy is knowledgeable in quiet a variety of most musical styles.

With guitar, Kathy focuses on learning to read and play musical notation and chords without using guitar tablature. Again, a variety of musical styles are used for instruction, including everything from classical to punk!

And with piano, Kathy focuses on learning to read and play musical notation as well as mastering scales and chord progressions, inversions, etc. She loves opportunities to combine voice lessons with guitar lessons, or voice lessons with piano lessons, as one instrument feeds into the other in interesting and helpful ways.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I travel with my travel guitar and music for lessons. I expect guitar students to have their own guitar, and piano or voice students to have some sort of keyboard, even a small one.

*** Specialties ***
all-levels voice, beginning guitar, beginning piano
I specialize in a classical voice method, which I believe is a good foundation for all styles of singing. I have experience with classical singing, music theatre (I have a minor from my undergraduate education in Theatre) and folk. I'm an experienced songwriter and am able to guide students in that area.

I teach notes and chords for my guitar students. I don't teach guitar tablature; instead, I teach basic guitar music on the staff.

Also, I teach beginning piano, including basic music theory, note spelling, etc.
