Rachel A.

West Hartford, CT

About Rachel

Soprano Rachel has been capturing audiences with her warm soaring tone, dynamic stage presence, and earnest performances. A native of Stockton, California, Rachel was born into a musical family and quickly developed an affinity for the performing arts. She first fell in love with classical music as an oboist and gradually found her niche as a singer through her passion for languages, literature, and theater. In the fall of 2012, she relocated to Connecticut where she continues to be an active performer of opera, oratorio, art song, crossover, and new music. She holds a Master of Music degree
from the University of Northern Colorado and a Bachelor of Music degree from San Jose State University.

Ms. Abrams has been featured by Hartford Opera Theater as Mrs. Nordstrom in A Little Night Music, A Woman in the world premiere of scenes from Christopher McCormick’s opera In a Grove, Emma in Rachel Peters’ Mermaid in the Jar, Ms. Romano in the world premiere of Jeremy Beck’s I Can Hardly Wait!, the Sandman in Hansel and Gretel with Revolution Opera Alliance, and Peep Bo in The Mikado with the Simsbury Light Opera Company.

Prior to moving to Connecticut, Rachel lived in St. Louis, Missouri, where she performed frequently with the esteemed St. Louis Symphony Chorus, Winter Opera St. Louis, Union Avenue Opera, and the Southern Illinois Music Festival. In 2012, Ms. Abrams had the opportunity to be a sponsored young artist with Winter Opera St. Louis where she performed the role of Echo in Ariadne auf Naxos, covered Musetta in La Bohème, and performed in the Rogers and Hammerstein musical review: A Grand Night for Singing. Ms. Abrams has also performed with Opera Fort Collins, Loveland Opera Theater, the Victorian Lyric Opera Company, and Opera Classica Europa in Bad Schwalbach, Germany as an apprentice artist. Additional operatic credits include: Gretel in Hansel and Gretel, Zweite Dame in Die Zauberflöte, Giannetta in L’Elisir d’Amore, Susanna and Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro, and Fanny in Rossini’s La cambiale di matrimonio.

No stranger to the concert stage, Ms. Abrams has performed in numerous concerts, oratorios, and recitals throughout the United States. She has performed as the soprano soloist in Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Haydn’s Coronation Mass, Vivaldi’s Gloria, and Mozart’s Vesperae solennes de confessore. A passionate performer of Jewish music, Ms. Abrams had the unique opportunity to sing the soprano solo in Martin Bresnick’s puppet opera, Der Signál, with the Hartford Independent Chamber Orchestra during the 10th Annual Celebration of Jewish Arts and Culture at Charter Oak Cultural Center in October of 2014.

As an active performer of art song, Ms. Abrams has collaborated with various musicians throughout the New England region to create diverse and accessible art song recitals. In August, Rachel and pianist Andrew King performed an art song recital, titled Songs of Land and Sea, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Williamstown, Massachusetts. This recital contains works by Schubert, Fauré, Rorem, and Rachmaninoff, and was received with great acclaim. Songs of Land and Sea will continue to be performed throughout 2014-2015 at multiple venues throughout New England.

Upcoming engagements include a lecture recital featuring German-Jewish Refugee Composers with the Jewish Studies Department at the University of Hartford and Mabel in Pirates of Penzance with the Greater Meriden Concert Chorale and Orchestra. This summer, Ms. Abrams will be joining Madison Lyric Stage as a member of their inaugural Meistersinger Apprentice Artist Program where she will perform the role of Mrs. Nordstrom in A Little Night Music and cover the First Niece in Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes.

In addition to being a passionate performer and collaborator, Rachel is a private music educator dedicated to the success of her students. Ms. Abrams maintains a private studio of voice students out of her home in West Hartford, Connecticut. In addition to her private teaching studio, Ms. Abrams teaches Musical Discovery courses at the Farmington Valley Academy Montessori in Avon, CT.

Before opening her own private studio in Connecticut, Ms. Abrams lived in St. Louis, Missouri where she taught throughout the region. While in Missouri, she served as an Adjunct Voice Instructor/Lecture Professor at East Central College and a Private Voice and Music Instructor at St. John's School of the Arts.

In addition to her teaching experience in the Missouri area, Rachel was a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Northern Colorado where she was an assistant instructor for Music Survey and Music and World Cultures classes.

Becca H.

Hartford, CT

I am a certified Vocal Instructor in the Institute for Vocal Advancement or 'IVA'. It is an institution that focuses on giving teachers the knowledge and tools to allow their students to sing from the bottom to the top of their voice with health, ease, balance, strength and tone quality in all genres of music. In this organization all teachers have to accomplish education hours, classes and testing each year to remain certified and advance in the instructor levels. I apply every bit of this knowledge to all of my student's and their lessons. The technique I am trained in works miracles and shows results after just one lesson!

About Becca

I have enjoyed the stage and the thrill of entertaining since I was a child. I have been in numerous productions, including Las Vegas Academy's €œSweeney Todd€ starring as Mrs. Lovett, which was selected as a highlighted show at the National Thespian Conference, Cats as Pouncival, €œLittle Women€ as Marmee, National Thespian€™s €œHairspray as Prudy, Super Summer Theatre€™s Annie as Pepper, and many more! I have also done work as a recording studio vocalist and corporate performer on the Las Vegas Strip. I have been studying voice with the famed Jeffrey Skouson for the past decade and continu
e to study teaching with him as well. I have received performance training from many different sources including Professional Broadway Performers, Famed Acting Coaches, Vocal Stylizing Coaches to the Stars, and Master Vocal Teachers. My love of performing transformed into a new love for teaching people to sing and act so that they too can experience the same joy I feel when I'm on the stage. Because of this love I studied music education at Brigham Young University ID and became a certified Vocal Instructor in the Institute for Vocal Advancement (previously a certified Speech Level Singing Instructor) in an extensive program where I must complete education and testing each year. I focus on building a singer€™s range and strength in healthy ways in all genres of music. I work with all types of performers from recording studios to the stage.
During your first lesson, I will assess your voice to determine your tendencies and weak spots. In each lesson we will begin with a series of exercises that will turn your weaknesses into strengths. We will then apply these techniques to songs of your choice. During each lesson, we can work on performance, styling and any areas you may need instruction in. If you would like to sing from the bottom to the top of your voice with strength and ease, I am the teacher for you!

Chelsea is an amazing voice teacher! I am only 13 years old, and have never had any vocal training before her. In a really short time she prepared me so well to audition for my middle school musicals.....I got the lead in both of them!!!! ("Annie, and "The Sound Of Music"). I couldn't ask for a better teacher!!!! :)

After working with Chelsea for only a short six months I got into the renowned GRAMMY CAMP for vocal performance. After studying with her for a year, I auditioned and received a scholarship to Berklee College of Music's five week summer intensive program for voice. Not only is she an incredible singer herself but she is also a great teacher. She is able to demonstrate examples and articulate corrections when necessary. Chelsea is constantly testing my abilities and pushing me to go outside of my comfort zone, but at the same time her encouraging and positive attitude make studying with her very enjoyable.
