David H.

Saugus, MA

Bass is thought of as easier than guitar, but if you believe that you're just not playing the instrument right. The bass is arguably the most important instrument in any kind of music (Jack White doesn't agree with me on this) Every chord has a bunch of matching scales and lines and riffs that every serious bass player should know front to back to be able to carry a good band. All levels welcome.

About David

I am a 28 year old Massachusetts native and have been playing music since I was 8 years old, starting on the piano with a wonderful teacher in Beverly who also went to Berklee. I picked up the guitar and the bass in high school and got into rock, jazz and blues and haven't looked back. I received a bachelors degree from Berklee in 2012 with a major in Professional Music and minor in Music Education.

I currently perform in and around Boston with several bands and also build electric guitars and perform all types of repairs and modifications. I also will teach this skill if you are int
erested...

Music study is great exercise for your brain. It works both the left and right hemispheres of the brain simultaneously because you are thinking both creatively and logically/mathematically at the same time.

I am happy teaching students at any level, even if you have never picked up an instrument before. I can work with you and get you on the path to being the kind of musician you want to be.

*** Lesson Details ***
I custom tailor my lessons to meet a students individual needs. I am a serious teacher, but I am a laid back person. I am easy going, but I will make sure you learn what you need to learn. I can guarantee after 4 or 5 lessons with me, you will have tripled your knowledge of chords, scales, technique, and song repertoire. I am very patient and am happy to work with students of all ages and skill levels.

I encourage mid to upper level students to bring in CD's or email an MP3/YouTube link of songs they want to learn (if they are at the right level) and I will transcribe them on the spot and go through them with you step by step.

If you want to learn how to play all your favorite songs, I am the teacher for you. I won't make you play music you aren't really interested in, but I will make recommendations for songs to improve your playing and include music theory so that you understand what you are playing and why you are playing it. The point of playing music is to HAVE FUN, after all.

So far, so good. After only 5 weeks I'm already playing along to a couple of recordings of songs I like. I have lots of musical experience, but never picked up a bass guitar before this past January. I'm really enjoying the lessons. David is a great teacher and I expect to be around for a long time.

Albino M.

Cambridge, MA

I have been playing bass for 10 years. In 10 years I have been working with bands from live shows and studio recording.

About Albino

Albino was born in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, a country in southern Africa known for its rich musical and cultural heritage. Fueled by the resourcefulness and determination that have always characterized Mozambicans, he built his first guitar at 16 from a 5-liter can of oil, scrap wood, and strings made out of electrical cords.

Drawn to the sounds of neighborhood street musicians in Maputo, Albino began to play in a number of local bands. As with his home-made guitar, Albino wanted to combine styles and incorporate diverse elements in his music. For his talents to grow, he knew he n
eeded experience new places, cultures, and sounds.

While studying music education and Performance at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Mozambique, he heard about the Berklee School of Music in Boston, USA, where he could expand his musical horizons. Soon after, he was one of the first students to receive a full scholarship to Berklee through the African Scholars program. In 2009, he settled in Boston, Massachusetts.

At Berklee, he was exposed to a variety of influences, but wanted to go deeper into the roots of jazz and expand his knowledge of music. He auditioned and was selected to participate in the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, which is directed by Danilo Perez and the residency teachers, including Joe Lovano John Patitucci, and Terri Lyne Carrington. The Institute emphasizes an artist's original vision in jazz, and has helped Albino find his own unique voice in the art form.

Albino still felt the absence of his own Mozambican traditions in his music. With the help of his mentors, Richard Bona and Lionel Loueke, two of the most prominent African musicians in the United States of America today, he began to bridge that gap.

Today, Albino's music succeeds in combining many disparate parts into an organic whole. It incorporates his musical experiences from Mozambique, the U.S., and many other places around the world, combining rhythmic patterns and musical concepts to create a unique Moz-Jazz sound. He will always continue to combine and capture the energies of different musical traditions to create a unified and original musical style.

Albino's original composition “Mozambique Dance” was recorded by Jazz Revelation Records, a student-run record label at the Berklee College of Music, for the 8th annual album released in 2011. He also recorded “Awusiwana,” his own composition, for the Berklee 2012 summer album. His debut album, also called Mozambique Dance, is to be released in Spring 2013.

Albino is an active musician, and has performed in several countries including Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Italy, the U.S., and Mexico. He has also produced and recorded various projects in Mozambique and in the United States. In 2012, he will graduate from Berklee College with a degree in Music Production & Engineering and Performance, and a minor in Acoustics and Electronics.

Christopher S.

Boston, MA

I can teach slap bass, nice bass lines, walking bass lines, in pretty much any style of music you can think of!

About Christopher

Hello! My name is Christopher S. and I am a classical guitarist, composer, linguist, and experienced language and music teacher.

I am a recent graduate with a Masters of Music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music. There I studied with the world-renowned guitarist Eliot Fisk who is a direct student of the legendary guitarist Andres Segovia.

Currently I teach over 20 students at a variety different of music schools as well as in my in my home studio. I give regular performances throughout the Boston area and around New England. I am also in the midst of completing my debut al
bum titled, "The Music of Italy and Spain for the Guitar."

I began learning music when I was nine on the piano, however by the time I turned twelve I discovered my passion for the guitar. I began by learning songs and playing in a band with some friends. This was the start of my amazing journey into music. I started with blues, rock, and pop music but I quickly moved into more complex genres such as funk and Jazz music.

In college I began my studies of the historically endless world of classical music. This is also when I began teaching. After earning my degree, from Humboldt State University in Northern California, I began working as a music teacher.

I was hired as the main music instructor at a private music school called the Upper Valley Rock School. There I gave group lessons and private classes in guitar, bass, drums, piano and recording equipment. There I grew my experience of teaching to kids of all ages as well as adults.

After working awhile, I realized that in order to better my skills and become the guitar teacher I wanted to be I had to travel abroad. I moved to Seville, Spain where for two years I studied the art of classical and flamenco guitar.

I studied with a international known Spanish guitarist named Francisco Bernier at the Conservatory in Seville for two years and gave private guitar lessons part time. During this time I was also teaching English as a second language to high school and middle school students. From traveling and spending so much time in Europe, I also developed and studied my love of languages and I became fluent in Spanish and Italian.

If you are interested in having lessons with me, please contact me and we can begin learning the art of making beautiful music or learning the beautiful languages of the world! "Hasta pronto!" "A presto!" and "Speak to you soon!"

Some press:

Phil's compositions showcase a variety of ideas and are quite effective at setting up the soloists to explore the various permutations suggested by his tunes. His compositional originality is matched by his incisive playing which ranges from "inside" lyricism to hard edged, riff based, screaming rock and satisfying surreal textures aided by his intelligent use of electronics."
- David Kane, Cadence Music

"With demonstrative technique, Phil is cognizant of the tradition but thinks outside of the box."

Although I'm not technically a student of Phil's, I learn a lot from him every time I play and teach with him. We perform regularly at Berklee, where I'm a professor, and we give concerts and masterclasses all over the Northeast together (most recent was at Cornell). Phil's a warmhearted, patient, brilliant teacher and an outstanding and creative musician, seamlessly putting together everything he knows--jazz, shredding, classical--there's no boundaries for him! He's great at explaining things, and he never belittles a question, no matter how dumb you might have thought it was. Phil's a great friend and a great teacher. -John Funkhouser, Berklee College of Music, Boston

In addition to being the most talented guitarist and musician I have ever had the opportunity to play with, Phil is an astoundingly good teacher. I've played guitar for 8 years and taken private lessons the entire time. Phil has been my teacher for the past 2 years and in that time I have progressed as a musician more than I could have ever imagined. Phil has been the biggest factor in my decision to major in music, due to his unrivaled musical talent, his kind, unassuming, (and funny) demeanor and his seemingly limitless knowledge of the fretboard. He is well versed in so many genres of music, and has such an effortless grasp on improvisation. Any guitarist, from immediate beginners to seasoned professionals, can learn so much from Phil. Nathan was great. My son didn't want to take piano lessons at first, but had completely changed his mind by the end of his first lesson. He said Nathan was "so cool" and he showed me all the things he learned in his first 30 minutes. We can't wait to continue his lessons.
