About Ariel

Hi! My name is Ariel. Thank you so much for looking at my profile. Here is some information about my educational background, performance career, and how I believe I benefit students.

I was heralded as an “impressive young…discovery” by the Los Angeles Times in 2010 when I made my operatic debut with Long Beach Opera as Nancy T’ang in Adam’s Nixon in China. I have performed roles such as Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Micaela in Bizet’s Carmen, First Woman in Cherubini’s Medea, Second Lady in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, and Giovanna in Verdi’s Rigoletto. I have been a soloist wit
h the Blackbird Music Project, and I regularly collaborate with composers in the Southern California area. I was a fourth place winner in the Palm Springs Vocal Competition and am an OperaWorks alumna. I have a Masters degree from the University of Southern California, Thornton School of Music and I have a Bachelors degree from Northern Arizona University. I also completed a teaching internship at the California Lutheran University.

My style of teaching is tailor made for each student because everyone has different goals and needs. I focus on making singing fun and painless while setting a strong technical foundation. My goal for the student is to take away technical issues so they can be musically expressive and show the world who they are.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid back teacher. My hope is that students will feel improvement in their lessons and it will motivate them to practice. In my opinion, the lessons should be fun, educational, and safe.

My curriculum is based on the needs of the student. In general, I always begin with breathing techniques. Breathing is the foundation of singing and so I tend to spend some time trying to show the student the most efficient and most effortless technique. Then I move on to what I have learned from my own voice teacher, and I will teach the students what are called "vocal function exercises." These are a series of gentle warm ups that teach the student a combination of breath pressure, resonance, and eliminating physical tensions within the neck, chest, and back. Then I move on to incorporating these ideas into repertoire. I like to decide repertoire with the student based on their preferences and their skill level. Generally I like to give the student one classical piece in a foreign language and one musical theater piece, but this is not set in stone.
I hope that after a few months the student will have an understanding of breathing, beginning vocal technique, and some repertoire we have been working on.

All of this said, ultimately I do not hold students to my own expectations. I want them to learn at their own pace and not feel they need to be at a certain point after a certain amount of time.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room. Keyboard. Seating for parents. Cats.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide sheet music and I expect the student to provide a keyboard or piano.

*** Specialties ***
I teach a method that is very simple and allows the student to express themselves musically and to have fun.

My expertise is Opera but I can teach all styles of singing.

Jessie M.

Pasadena, CA

I begin each voice lesson with a warm-up to prepare the student for their session. Next, we do a series of exercises specially designed to help each individual develop their skill in a way that best fits them. We then work on a piece of their choice for the remainder of the lesson, perfecting their technique and helping them become performance ready. I teach with patience and fun because I feel that this is the key to achieving goals and inspiring a good habit of practice.

If you do not already have a song or sheet music to bring in I can help you choose one during your first lesson. I also require that my students keep a practice journal to record their daily practice sessions. If possible, please bring a recording device of some sort so you can record your lessons. It is a HUGE help to be able to listen back on your lessons and to use them in your daily practice! No experience is necessary, that is what I'm here for!

About Jessie

Every student is a unique person who deserves a lesson customized to his or her individual needs. Each of my students prospers in an atmosphere of patience and encouragement. While the lessons are fun and enjoyable, the serious student will be supported in the development of skills leading to a rewarding career. And the more casual students will grow in an appreciation of music that will always enrich their lives.

As a music major I developed a deeper understanding of music theory, piano, voice, and theater. I received my A.A. in Music at College of the Desert and my Bachelor of Music degre
e at the University of Redlands- which I attended on a music scholarship. I have played leading roles in several operas and musicals in Southern California, including Gianni Schicchi, Die Fledermaus, La Boheme (DTL nominee), The Impresario, The Grand Duke, Patience (DTL award), Cosi fan tutte, Little Women the Musical, Seussical the Musical, and many more. I have also appeared in several concerts, opera scenes, competitions (winning music scholarships and theater awards), and worked as a singer at churches, restaurants, and in pop bands. I continue to perform and study music because performing is a part of who I am and I could never live without it.

With this experience under my belt, I feel a desire to pass on my knowledge to students. I carry a strong passion to help people develop their abilities and make them their own. I truly believe that if someone wants something out of life then they WILL achieve it with dedication, perseverance, confidence, and by having FUN doing it!

Fawn is a very fun, yet honest and straight-forward coach. She loves working with adults and children, and considers lessons a œteam effort to reach her students' goals. It really is more (Voice Acting) Script interpretation, and Diction; how to pronounce words in a script or paragraph, correctly. Fawn didn't waste any time, I was concerned about my Skype audio, no problem, and after a little wrangling, I figured out how to send her an audio file, and script I wanted her to look over.
She made notes, gave me suggestions, made comments on what I sent her, I'll do my home work; because I want to improve, and we'll do it again next week; same time time, same station... Sorry couldn't help that! She's the kind of coach I need right now!

I have never had online lessons before, and I was really worried that it wasn't going to work. However, Fawn exceeding my expectations. She made me feel so comfortable, which made it that much easier to be myself.

At the age of six, I started taking lessons. I ended up staying with that vocal coach until the age of 21, when she told me that I needed to find a more advanced vocal coach. I found someone who was really good, but I didn't feel that I was going anywhere with her. After my 1st lesson with Fawn, I said to myself, "Bingo! Someone who knows her stuff, knows what I need to do to be successful and will be there to help me do so." Thank you Fawn!! :)

I couldn't be happier with my choice. It's hasn't even been 24 hours, and I'm already looking forward to our next lesson. Thank you Fawn!! :)

Ben M.

Glendale, CA

Ben M. has a gift for empowering his students and taking the talents of professional vocalists to the next level. He is known for his ability to focus on each individual’s unique needs and aspirations, and for pushing them further than they believe is possible. Guided by his long-held, core philosophy that good technique should always making singing more simple, never more complicated, Ben continually strives to redefine the way singers approach their own voices.

About Ben

See Ben's latest contribution to the TakeLessons blog at http://takelessons.com/blog/vocal-health-for-singers.

With a top-rated private events entertainment company (2015 Couples' Choice Award - WeddingWire.com), three full length releases under his belt, a bachelor's degree in music from Northeastern University, and over 15 years experience as a vocalist, Ben currently teaches his craft to children, teens, and adult singers. Ben has received training from a number of teachers in Nashville and Los Angeles - all of whom teach speech level singing, a tried and true method of singing that trul
y makes vocalizing as easy and speaking.

Applying these exercises to each student based on individual needs, Ben works with students to evaluate current skill level, set goals for a customized program, and ensure marked improvement with each lesson.

Ben's specialty is coaching pop vocalists. Having shaped his own voice around the styling of Bruno Mars, Kelly Clarkson, Michael Jackson and Adele, Ben's style mixes pop/rock vocals with R&B undertones.

In addition to his releases as an artist and appearances in professional productions on the East and West Coasts, Ben is also a YouTube sensation. His videos has received over half a million views in the past two years.

What an amazing person and teacher Ben is! He's energetic, articulate, and great at demonstrating the physicality of singing for a novice like me. I was overwhelmed at first by all the new information I learned about how to use my muscles to control airflow and volume in my mouth and chest, but Ben quickly made things fun and enjoyable, so it was never too much to handle.

I truly have enjoyed working with him, and he's also a great singer and just a really cool guy who made me feel comfortable and at ease. Even though I haven't had time to practice too much (practice is the #1 key to improving!), I've always looked forward to meeting with Ben to take my singing lessons.

I'll definitely be working with him more in the future. Thanks for making my introduction to proper singing techniques a really awesome adventure Ben!

Ashot B.

Glendale, CA

Beginners: Warm-Up Exercises, Pitch Control, Simple Song Choice
Intermediate level: Warm-Up, Breathing Exercises, Right Song Choice
Advanced Level: Warm-Up, Repertoire Choice, Audition Preparation,
Studio Recording Preparation

About Ashot

Ashot B. is a well-known Armenian musician, composer, songwriter, arranger, producer, and voice/piano teacher. A graduate of Yerevan State Komitas Conservatory (with a Master’s Degree in music Performance and Education), he, along with a classical music, has been a lover of Pop and Jazz music from an early age. Among his influences are George Gershwin, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, and Quincy Jones.

The academic education on one side, and a personal research and self-education on another, brought him to the determination to find his own way for self-expression. In 1
987 he was invited by the National Centre of Children’s Art, Music and Aesthetics to work as a music director and arranger for its Musical Theatre. Soon, he was offered to lead a small group of singers, mostly teenage girls, which later evolved into his original Jazz-Pop- Choir. In 1990, the choir was featured on National Television, performing the famed The Beatles hit “Let it be,” and becoming an instant sensation. The work with this choir within the next 3-4 years brought many awards and fame to Mr. B. as well as to the young singers, many of whom went on to become nationally acclaimed Pop stars.

The years following the Jazz-Pop-Choir saw Ashot B. take on a new direction: individually working with aspiring young pop singers pursuing their dreams of a big stage. As a part-time professor in the Yerevan State Komitas Conservatory Jazz Department, the Yerevan State Pop & Jazz College, as well as privately, in his own Home-Studio, Ashot B. made it his top commitment to find, through individual approach, each young singers personal strengths, and, through the development of a musical taste and the choice of the right songs, help each of them reach the pinnacles of their potential. The results were participating and winning numerous prestigious international competitions, such as “Sloviansky Bazaar” (Slovenian Bazaar), “Shire Krug” (“Wider Circle”), “Golos Azii” (“Voice of Asia”), as well as, more recently, “Eurovision Song Contest,” and “American Idol.” Needless to say, many of these solo protgs joined the list of stars in the Armenian Pop Hall of Fame.

In 2006, Ashot B. moved to Los Angeles, and to this day continues to educate the young generations.

3. Basic music theory and notation
4. Appropriate and personalized choice of various songs/pieces: building of a repertoire

Ashot B. is a multi-talented musician, composer and educator! I made my first steps into the music world with the help of and under the direct supervision of this wonderful man! I was one of the lead singers of his Jazz/Pop band in Armenia. I was about 9 years old when I joined that band, and, since then, my life has never been the same! He introduced us to the best music, inspired us to sing in many styles; he taught us how to sing sophisticated harmonies, introduced complicated rhythms, helped each one of us find our own style, sing with our own unique voice. Our band took numerous prizes at music festivals around the world, and many of our band members continued our musical careers as professional singers and became top-level artists in different countries! He’s a great teacher, who knows exactly what each singer needs in order to bring out the best out of his/her voice. I can’t even find enough words to express all my gratitude and appreciation to my first teacher, my musical mentor, and a wonderful person who helped me become who I am today! I definitely recommend Ashot to everyone who’s looking for a great teacher! He knows the right path!

I met Prof. Ashot 7 years ago. By now, he has taught my eldest child for 7 years, my second child for 5 years, and my third child (youngest) for 2 years. Knowing that I have retained his teaching service for so long should tell you all you need to know about his teaching skills. But I will elaborate anyway . . . He is GREAT with children! He is patient, warm, and encouraging, and his love of music and teaching shines through. Not every student learns the same way, so Prof. Ashot, as a wise and experienced teacher, alters his teaching methods to suit each student individually. Below are a few simple words of praise from my kids:

“Prof. Ashot is a very experienced piano artist. I enjoy working with him very much because he is patient and has taught me a lot in the last 7 years.”
Phi, 13 years old.

“Prof. Ashot is a very experienced teacher with a knack for music. He has good taste in music. I have learned much from him and I’m learning more every week.”
Nhi, 11 years old.

“Prof. Ashot is a man with talent and skill. Prof. Ashot pushes us beyond our limit, but I love to work with him very much.”
