Beginning Mandolin. Have a book that I teach out of and can help with finger positions.
Hi! My name is Beckie and I have played music for all of my life. I play and teach many different instruments such as the Trumpet, French horn, Saxophone, Mandolin, Guitar, Clarinet, Voice, and Piano.
I graduated from Chapman University in 2010 with 2 degrees in music, Music Education and Music Performance on French horn. I am currently attending UCLA for my masters in Music Performance on French horn.
When I first began teaching, I taught at an elementary school for 3 years as a brass coach for a Montessori Academy. This is where I fell in love with teaching. I have been teaching pri
vately for 12 years now and love the one-on-one attention that I can give the students.
I have worked for many great organizations like the Los Angeles Philharmonic and California Philharmonic.
I currently am a freelance musician. I perform regularly with two different orchestras and am in a Brass Ensemble called the Vine Street Brass and a horn ensemble called the Thursday Horn Club. I have performed in such wonderful venues as the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Sydney Opera house, in which I was able to premier a piece!
I look forward to working with you or your child in helping to start or continue a musical instrument! *** Lesson Details *** When I teach lessons, I like to go at the pace of the student. I am very patient but I expect the student to practice during the week. I will always work with a student as long as it takes to have them understand what is difficult for them musically. I use a lot of different books like Teaching little fingers to Play and Standard of Excellence.
For Adults, I like the Big Beginners Piano book which has easy classical pieces to play!
I teach from the rudimentary skills and build on the fundamentals of music. After 3 or 6 months, my students feel accomplished with what they have learned and excited for the next 3 to 6 months!
I usually play my instruments with the students, but being a freelance musician, I may need to save my chops for an upcoming gig. Not always, but happens from time to time :)
*** Studio Equipment *** practice space in home w/ seating for parents and music stand. I also have a cat and a dog, so if you are allergic, please let me know! The cat and dog are always put away during the lesson time.
*** Travel Equipment *** I have one music stand. I expect the student to provide the music books and their own instruments.
*** Specialties *** I specialize in classical genres of playing.

Beckie did a great job with my Granddaughter on the Piano! Maddy loved her piano lessons with Beckie. My grandson also took Trumpet lessons with Beckie. Although she did not have an actual trumpet to bring to the lessons Beckie did a terrific job showing Jacob the music he wanted to learn and some trumpet playing concepts.

My 11 year old has been taking lessons with Beckie for about a month and I couldn't be happier. The first time we met Beckie we immediately discovered she is a very friendly and welcoming instructor. I noticed that my son was immediately at ease with her and all apprehension about meeting a new teacher left him. Driving home after that first lesson he commented on how much he liked Beckie. Beckie does a great job of explaining the theory part of the lessons and I'm excited to see my son's ability grow. My only regret is not having met her sooner.

Greg is a fantastic teacher who clearly loves music. He makes classes fun and is very encouraging. I felt I was hopeless at music to start and when we concluded lessons I felt like I could actually sing.

Gregory was patient and energetic. Cry son had a good time.
I attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston, and I have a BA in Music. I am a working pro musician, regularly playing all different kinds of gigs with different bands, as well as solo, and regular gigs on TV. I have taught music lessons, and guitar in particular, for 18 years. I play all styles, but my favorites are Rock, R&B, Country, Rockabilly, and Blues (I also enjoy playing jazz, classical, and other styles as well). My main instruments are guitar (electric and acoustic) and voice, but I play keyboards, bass, mandolin, and drums also.
*** Lesson Details *** I focus on a co
mprehensive approach, incorporating each student's natural abilities as well as musical interests - whether you want to learn how to play your favorite songs, learn all the skills to play with a band, or study music theory and advanced songwriting techniques, I can teach you! From playing as a hobby or to entertain friends and family to advanced college-level topics, we can cover whatever your specific goals are. Also, with student interest, I like to focus on music theory, and a deeper understanding of how songs/music work - in other words, rather than just teaching a student a song and being done with it, I like to focus on how and why the music works as it does, to enable students to put their own spin/style on it, play it in different keys, etc. I teach all skill levels, from brand-new beginners to advanced players.
Several of many possible topics of study include:
• Lead and rhythm styles and techniques -- both are essential to learn! • How to play solos and how to improvise • Styles and techniques of your favorite musicians/songwriters • Playing by ear and how to learn songs just by listening to them • Playing to accompany yourself or someone else singing • Developing parts and techniques to play with other musicians • Songwriting, and how to create riffs, hooks, and chord progressions • Reading chord charts • Music reading -- Optional, not at all essential to playing music, but a good skill to have
My teaching style is friendly and good-natured, I believe in positive encouragement and feedback, and don't believe in "guilt-tripping" or any other negativity toward students - playing music should be fun! I also love when students ask questions - I operate under the old saying that "there are no stupid questions!"
*** Studio Equipment *** Amplifier, music stand, computer with internet connection (for playback of songs from the internet or CDs)
*** Travel Equipment *** I provide blank manuscript/chord chart/tab paper. I expect the student to provide their own instrument (along with any related things such as amplifiers, guitar picks, strings, etc.) and to provide study books that we agree upon (if necessary). I am able to supply books if the student reimburses me at the time they receive them.
*** Specialties *** I tailor my teaching style to each student's aptitudes and interests. All music students learn differently, and it's my challenge as a music teacher to figure out what works best for each individual student to inspire them and to keep them excited and motivated about learning an instrument.

Mr. Mike T is very patient. He was very welcoming and made my son feel very comfortable at our first lesson. I appreciate his kindness and understanding in dealing with beginners. Can't wait for the next lesson! Thank you Mr. Mike 😉

Highly recommended: Amazing teacher!
Mike is a patient, supportive and incredibly talented teacher. From music theory to practical application, he's got all the answers... And he makes learning fun!
I took guitar lessons more than ten years ago and found it frustrating and I was terribly uninspired. Recently I took my old guitar out of mothballs and was determined to make some progress on the dang thing. A good friend recommended Mike and I've been taking lessons for nine months with him.
What's great about Mike is that he customizes my lessons. I'm not learning out of a book (which, I could if wanted) but I'm learning the songs that I love and learning the theory behind the chords, too. Then he keeps building on what we just learned. I go home from my hour lessons and play for another two hours because I'm so inspired.
I can't recommend Mike highly enough. He's a gem of a music instructor in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles.
I have been playing mandolin since high school. Most of my mandolin background is in folk/bluegrass but I am nonetheless comfortable playing a great number of styles. I often use the Hal Leonard Mandolin method book alongside my own worksheets to help teach basic bluegrass melodies.
I have been happily playing music for over half of my life and it has always been the light in my day. Now it is my hope to shed that same light onto you or your child. I am a very friendly and fun teacher with a great deal of professionalism and patience, even more importantly I love teaching and music with a passion.
I have been playing an instrument since the 4th grade (cello) and, as I learned how music works, was slowly able to pick-up a greater variety instruments with an increasing degree of ease. In high school, I decided to pick-up the guitar just to "have fun and rock out". I join
ed a band, played in the high school orchestra, joined the high school jazz band and began to practice songwriting and cover songs. Still, it was not until after I took my first class on music theory that I knew how much I not only loved the thrill of playing music but the discovery of how it worked. With this experience I can show you or your child why learning an instrument can be not only an exciting experience but an interesting and enthralling one as well.
I have been teaching music for over 5 years and have had experience with children as young as 5 to adults in their late 80's. I am a very attentive teacher who can not only help get you moving in the right direction but keep you on that path until your are a self-sufficient musician. A status that allows you to learn whatever you want on your instrument by yourself, whether it be for business, pleasure or for mere self-improvement.
I have had the chance to study with graduates of the Musician's Institute (MI), the California Institute of the Arts (CAL Arts) and Berklee College of Music. This has given me an inside look into how and what each institute teaches, as well as a first hand look at the techniques and ideas that the great players from these remarkable schools have come to produce.
My formal music education consists of 2 years at Pasadena City College where I obtained my general Associates Degree (much of the studies included music) and a semester at California State University Long Beach as a Jazz Guitar Performance Major. Additionally I have taken a great deal of classes in California State University Long Beach's teaching credential program, where I learned strategies and theories of how and what to teach my students - making me that much more effective at my craft. At Pasadena City College I studied with jazz/classical guitarist, Ron Berman, who has played with such jazz greats as Herb Ellis and Jimmy Wyble. At Cal State Long Beach I studied with jazz guitarist Ron Eschete, a former teacher at MI who has toured with the likes of Ray Brown, John Dizzy Gillespie and Jim Hall.
Most importantly I hope to show you or your child a new way to love and appreciate music. And to provide you with the ability to have the most fun on your instrument as possible.
I am also part of Takelessons Skype lessons program (lessons that take place on the internet via Skype) for those looking for a more convenient or affordable way to take music lessons from home.
*** Lesson Details *** Throughout my lessons, I always encourage basic skills including scales, sight-reading and technical exercises. But what I hope to give all my students is a basic understanding of music and their instrument, providing them with a practical ability to navigate the vast world of music for a lifetime.
Beyond these skills, I always have songs, styles and theory for you to work on but I am often more interested in what you as an individual want to learn on your instrument. Getting to learn concepts that you have chosen yourself will help encourage practice and will make the finished product all the more the rewarding.
I can custom tailor a teaching curriculum and/or style for any of my students: we can focus on learning songs, learning to read, how to write music, how music works, and even how to play specific styles of music (including funk, rock, jazz, Latin, flamenco, classical, country and blues). I also self tailor my own worksheets and set weekly goals with my students to help encourage practice, understanding and progress. For students interested in more advanced concepts, I can also teach ear training, music theory, advanced jazz improvisation as well as advanced playing techniques.
And... all this in a friendly and easy-going teaching environment.
*** Studio Equipment *** Located in my home garage, it is equipped with a small stage, an upright piano, an electric keyboard, a PA system, amplifiers, a drum set, a lap steel guitar, a pedal steel guitar, 2 cellos, multiple guitars, a mandolin, a dobro, 2 5-string banjos, a 4-string tenor banjo, a ukulele, 2 accordions and 2 electric basses.
*** Travel Equipment *** I can provide a guitar, cello (a full size), electric bass, a banjo, an amp, an accordion, cords and the occasional pick to students (sorry no spare mandolin or ukulele). I would only require an outlet and room to practice in; if the student could bring a pick that would be fantastic as well! I can also bring acoustic guitars if an outlet is unavailable and if that is in fact the kind of guitar the student wants to learn.
For piano students, it is best that they have their own piano or keyboard at their home; if the student is unable to obtain a piano for the first few lessons I do have a mobile keyboard but would require a fair amount of setting up.
*** Specialties *** Styles: Jazz, Rock, Reggae, Metal, Funk, Progressive Rock, Classical, Folk, Bluegrass, Country, Various forms of Latin Music, Blues, and a few others.
Instruments: Beginning to Intermediate - Drums, Accordion and Piano.
I teach beginning and intermediate students on mandolin and teach in a variety of styles and will cater my lessons to YOUR needs!

Started with Jeff in January 2015 - I had tinkered off & on with guitar for about 50 years, could play a little folky stuff & bluegrass rhythm guitar but not well, never took lessons before and hadn't played much for about 40 years. Jeff started off by hearing what I could do (not much!) and went from there, mainly with rock stuff. He is a walking encyclopedia, patient, unpretentious and I have made a lot of progress and continue to feel better about it every week. I actually am inspired to practice! I would recommend Jeff to anyone who wants to learn. 5 stars!
Daiana September 23, 2015
Jeff is the best teacher when it comes to guitar. I've been receiving lessons from him since I was 10 and have continued the lessons over the years. Each lesson I take I get to learn something new and I am always entertained. I'm amazed at how well he teaches you every chord and technique in a simple and clear manner. He is patient and overall just an awesome person. May God bless him in his teaching career!

"The best teacher I have ever had
I am an adult who has never taken music lessons. My girlfriend gave me a mandolin for Christmas and I looked around onli
ne before I found Mr Sweet. As I live in Maine, I can't make regular lessons in person, so we do lessons online using Google+ Hangouts, which is really convenient for me. He's teaching me everything about playing the instrument, also how to improvise, play chords, some music theory, lots of music history. He's patient, kind and bolsters my self esteem with lots of positive comments and useful criticism. I recommend him to everyone I know that wants to play mandolin. I am now playing mandolin in a band!"

"Mr. Willy helped me learn the song "Mean" by Taylor Swift!! I was so happy to play! I took the Stringed Instrument Workshop and I loved it! It was so much
fun, and I was able to learn with my friends. It was easy to learn, and we learned how to play "Amazing Grace," together. We played it for my church and everyone loved it!!! :)
I will continue playing mandolin, and want to also learn violin, piano and guitar. I can even play "Mean" on the 12 string guitar now in open tunings!!"

"Aaron is soooo patient and encouraging. He has been really helpful in a few important ways. First, he has helped find great tunes for me to learn by sig

Third, and most importantly, he has challenged me to begin the process of really hearing music so I can improvise (the thing I most want to do but am most challenged with)."

"For being a beginner, Travis was very patient while preparing me for playing chord and chop playing. Travis also individualized lesson plans emailing upco
ming chords and songs that I can learn, starting out slow and practice to the bluegrass style. I was very skeptical about on line lessons, but has ended up very fun and motivating, and educational with music theories. Travis is also easy to communicate with, returning emails promptly. I very highly recommend Travis to anyone from a beginner to an advanced player."
