I began learning mandolin a couple years ago and am proficient with chords and tunes. Classical or bluegrass style. I can teach sight reading music notation as well.
Mandolin lessons for people who want to learn classical music, bluegrass, folk or jazz. This instrument is so versatile there are so many types of music one can play. Students learn how to read charts, improvise, comp with chords as well as take lead solos.
I started playing acoustic guitar when I was seven years old (off and on). I then started traveling more and found the mandolin to be so much easier to carry around and so much fun, it was hard to stop playing it. I have been playing and teaching mostly bluegrass, old time, Irish, blues, and swing jazz styles for many years. I have taught both privately and have also done various workshops at festivals. I have taught multiple years for instance at the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival in PA, The Traditions week at Common Ground on the Hill Festival in MD, etc
My students learn to have fun with music. Students can work on rhythms, melodies, improvisation, song writing, arranging tunes, music theory, getting into and/or hanging on in a jam session, etc.
The most common mandolin uses 4 pairs(courses) of strings that are tuned to each other. The mandolin strings are tuned a 5th apart and considered to be in the soprano ( high register/'pitch) range. Like any plucked instrument, mandolin notes decay to silence rather than sound out continuously as with a bowed note on a violin. Its small size and higher pitch make mandolin notes decay faster than larger stringed instruments like guitar. This encourages the use of tremolo (rapid picking of one or more pairs of strings) to create sustained notes or chords. The mandolin's paired strings facilitate this technique: the plectrum (pick) strikes each of a pair of strings alternately, providing a more full and continuous sound than a single string would. Mandolins are most commonly used in classical, traditional, bluegrass, and folk music.
I have been playing mandolin for a couple of years. There is no denying that the mandolin isn't my first instrument, however, I am capable of teaching beginner mandolin students every thing they need to know to give them a solid foundation. I teach out of a book, but I also focus on applying mandolin skills to learning popular songs and folk melodies.
