Jessica G.

Pasadena, CA

Cello lessons in my studio, at your home, or on-line.

About Jessica

I have 20 years of playing experience along with a Bachelor's degree in Cello Performance. I was the section leader of my university's orchestra as well as a full-scholarship member of the university quartet. As a professional gigging musician, I have played with Il Divo, Mario Winans, La Jolla Symphony, Doctor's Symphony, Porta Caeli Chamber Players, and the quartet La Dolce.

I am a member of MTAC (Music Teacher's Association of California) and can sign my students up for Certificate of Merit. This is a music study program with an annual evaluation and written assessment. Stand-out stu
dents will be invited to play at the Branch Recital.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons differ slightly depending on the student. In general, it starts with scales for intonation or working on vibrato, moves on to an etude or exercise, and culminates with work on a piece of music. But not every student works well with this method, so I will add in some musical worksheets and ear training games for those that require lessons with more variety.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can come to your home to teach. I will bring all necessary method books and teaching materials.

I am an adult beginner, who was a bit intimidated by online lessons, but had no other options locally. I'm so glad that I found Jessica! She is both patient, and supportive; she is highly adept at finding what works for the individual, and personalizes instruction based on what you need to improve. She is also very accommodating, and understanding when there are scheduling changes. I look forward to my lessons every week; they are so much fun!

Hans G.

Los Angeles, CA

I've been teaching cello for 8 years, working with ages 7 - 72. I have students that have gone on to perform concerts in several continents. I specialize in getting students to excel at the level they are at and to grow. I enjoy creatively give my students the tools to apply practice to their solutions. I love working with students of all experience levels. I have performed all over the world including numerous times with orchestras in the US (highlights at Carnegie hall) and in Europe.

About Hans

Here's where we can start:
1. We start with warm up session getting comfortable with the instrument (includes scales and bow exercises)
2. We focus on quality sound, both from the left hand (fingered) and right (bowed)
3. We play from a couple Cello Books including songs and pieces that you actually like.... This could include solo, duo and chamber music, folk music, folk songs, well known pop songs with or without backing tracks.

We can spend as much time or as little as you need to get something out of the instrument..We will adjust to get you comfortable learning at your own pace.

I got degrees from Johns Hopkins Peabody and USC Thornton School. I have 8 years of teaching experience through both schools. My teaching experience has included from beginner, amateur to the professional level.

Hans is an extraordinary cello teacher and performer. I play cello at an intermediate level as well as have been taking lessons from him regularly. Hans has opened me around lots of new means to listen, make a better sound, and also carry out even more musically. He has actually entirely transformed my vibrato. Most importantly, he's a caring individual who truly spreads out the pleasure of cello songs. Hans is simply brilliant!

Adult student here. I have played instruments prior to, however was braaaand brand-new to the cello when I began taking lessons with hans. He's an excellent educator. He's very favorable in his feedback and also constantly helps maintain you focused on those next few actions to become a better player. I feel I made better development under Hans than I would have under a various trainer due to those 2 high qualities alone.

Ryan S.

Los Angeles, CA

Experienced cello teacher of 7 years! My lesson plan is simple : 1. we warm up with basic scales + finger exercises, 2. we focus on tone + proper technique, and 3. we play from a variety of solo pieces, duets, and ensemble music (I prepare backing tracks to help w/ rhythm and timing... or play the parts myself). If the student is working on music for school orchestra, we work on that as well.

The time devoted to each portion of the lesson is totally adjustable. You will learn what you want to learn at your own pace.

About Ryan

Experienced cello, drum, piano, and guitar player of 20 years. Has a MFA degree in music composition + a BFA in music performance. Recorded professionally for tv shows such as "Glee," "Entertainment Tonight," and "Extra." Also records for "Sonoton Recordings." Currently resides in Los Angeles, California. Teaches locally, in-studio, or online. Occasionally travels to Japan to perform + teach.

Ryan is Awesome! He is very patient with my 9yr old. We've been taking drum lessons for a little over 2 months and my son already knows how to read sheet music, and even learned to play a few songs. I am very impressed! Ryan is very encouraging and positive during the lessons. My son leaves with a sense of motivation and confidence after every lesson! As long as he keeps his interest in playing drums, we will certainly stick with Ryan. Thanks, Ryan!!!

Ryan was great. He put to ease a nervous almost 8 year old and was very skilled at playing her music "on tap." He hadn't seen some of the music until the lesson but you would never know it. He picked out many great things in her playing that made the overall piece sound better and more developed. We're looking forward to our next lesson.

We had a very nice lesson with Maritza. She is knowledgeable, easy going and kind. I appreciated that she spent time with my child with the fundamentals of violin positioning before jumping into playing.

Tara A.

South Pasadena, CA

I've been teaching cello for 8 years, and teach all ages and all levels. I am Suzuki trained, and am committed to finding solutions through open communication. It is imperative that the student, teacher, and parent are on the same page.

I tailor each lesson to each individual student, and bring awareness to the student's communication style. I teach students how to hold the cello and bow sustainably, how to play with ease and comfort, music theory and history, and an overall aural vocabulary.

About Tara

Tara Atkinson graduated from Lawrence University’s Conservatory of Music with a Bachelors Degree in cello performance. During her studies there, she was awarded the opportunity to play with acclaimed faculty Wen-Lei Gu and Anthony Padilla for a live radio broadcast in Chicago. Growing up in LA, she has studied with Rachael Lonergan, Pam Devenport, Tanya Carey, and John Walz.

She has been teaching for over 8 years, and has taken Suzuki training regularly. She is passionate about reaching a broad and diverse audience. She is an active performer, recording artist, and collaborator. She is an a
ctive member of the Suzuki of the Americas and the American String Teachers Association. She maintains a studio of students from age 3 to adult in South Pasadena, and makes soap and gardens in her spare time.
