Elizabeth E.

Indianapolis, IN

I've been teaching piano for 5 years and have played for 25 years. I recently moved from Dallas, where I taught a studio of 25 students. I teach all ages and ability levels and specialize in classical piano. You'll start by learning the basics of technique, note reading, and music theory, and soon you'll be playing a variety of music from your favorite styles!

About Elizabeth

I have taught private piano lessons to students ages 5 to adult since 2011. I'm a member of the Indianapolis Piano Teachers Association and also work frequently as an accompanist for middle and high school band students competing in solo competitions. I studied piano for 15 years, including as a student at the Jacobs School of Music at IU and at Rocky Ridge Music Center in Estes Park, Colorado. In addition to teaching piano, I work as an adjunct professor of history and enjoy spending time with my husband, Jay, and our beagle, Ellie.

I structure my lessons according to students' individual
interests and strengths, while building a strong foundation in piano technique and music theory. With beginning and intermediate students I typically use the Piano Adventures series of books, which I supplement with music in a variety of styles ranging from authentic classical repertoire to jazz. Whatever your experience or goals, we'€™ll work together to come up with a plan that works for you.

I'm a patient, encouraging teacher and we have fun during lessons. I also expect my students to practice daily at home so that they can make steady progress.

PLEASE NOTE: Students need to have a piano, whether acoustic or digital, to practice on at home. This is necessary in order for students to progress and to develop good piano technique. If you prefer to purchase an electric piano, look for one with touch-sensitive, weighted keys, which will mimic the feel and dynamic capabilities of an acoustic piano. If you do not have a piano, I'm happy to offer advice on finding a suitable one before your first lesson.

Jay E.

Indianapolis, IN

I've been teaching piano for 3 years, and my students have been making excellent progress. I specialize in classical and pop music, and typically use either the Faber, Alfred, or Music Tree methods. I require daily practice from my students and I ask that they own a piano or keyboard in goo working condition with all 88 keys (keyboards must be touch sensitive). I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

About Jay

My musical journey began the with piano at the age of seven. I took regular lesson all the way through high school, eventually performing works such as Gershwin Etudes, Chopin Waltzes, Debussy Arabesques, and Beethoven Piano Sonatas. My trumpet performing started in 1993 and continues, having earned two degrees in trumpet performance, and performed with groups such as the Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra and Lone Star Wind Orchestra.

I have been teaching privately for 13 years, most recently having a studio of around 50 students in the Dallas area, where my students have performed at even
ts such as the state solo and ensemble contest in Austin, and it groups such as the Texas All State Band, and Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra to name a few. I now continue my private lesson instruction in Indianapolis. I have learned to adjust my teaching technique to match each individual, whether it be the music difficulty, learning pace, or musical genre preference. I have taught trumpet students of all ages and abilities, as well as beginning and intermediate piano and french horn. I look forward to helping you make beautiful music on your instrument!

My teaching philosophy

Private lessons are a one on one experience that give students guidance on their specific musical needs. Rather than only working on pieces for un upcoming audition or competition, I emphasize working on a variety of repertoire that will improve all aspects of one’s musicianship. Lessons are not a weekly practice or coaching session, but rather a time for me to help students with what they have already been practicing. More specifically, I help with embouchure formation, tone production, note reading, practice technique, musical phrasing, breathing, performance anxiety, rhythm, music theory, bad habits, or anything that will help the student make better music in the long term. I also frequently provide musical examples and inspiration by playing for my students.

Lesson Policies

Students are required to practice a minimum of fifteen to forty-five minutes per day (depending on the student’s age), six days per week.

Students are responsible for purchasing their own lesson materials, such as books, valve oil, metronome, etc. Piano students must also have a well maintained piano to practice on. High quality electric keyboards with all 88 weighted and touch sensitive keys are acceptable.

I have a 24-hour lesson rescheduling policy. If a student fails to provide notice via phone call, text or email at least 24 hours prior to the starting time of the lesson, or misses a lesson unannounced, the student will be charged for the full lesson cost. If adequate notification is given, the lesson will be made up at a later date. Lessons may not be missed without rescheduling, except for the months of December, July, and August. During any or all of these months, due to holidays and vacations, students may miss one lesson without rescheduling.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Clavinova keyboard with weighted keys

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide no equipment

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical, jazz, and commercial, having experience in all three areas. I teach a lot of ear training and music theory regardless of the instrument.

Sphie's vocal style is soulful and her teaching style the same. She asks questions and creates a trusting atmosphere that allows for an open and trans-formative experience. She helped me find and develop my voice, a voice with far greater texture and skill than I could have dreamed. She is a masterful teacher of both vocals and of life. She takes it to the heart and always mines something meaningful and authentic.

Greenwood, IN

I accommodate any student at any level, I create a personal experience to help the student with his/ her needs. I want to see the student succeed in learning this musical skill. In lessons we will learn different styles of music, with the focus on the music style of the students choice. Along side of that we will learn piano techniques that will help with posture and fingering. We will also learn music theory in lessons. I am very flexible and I like to create a personal, friendly environment.

About Blake

I have been singing and playing piano since I was 7 years old. I started teaching piano and voice when I was about 12 years old. Not long after that I began to get very involved with community musical theater. During this time I was classically trained in voice as well as piano. I studied music in college, where my focus was in vocal performance. During that time I learned a number of instruments such as percussion, strings, some wind and brass. I teach beginners level of strings. I also teach classical level piano and voice. I work with music for theater auditions as well as competition music
. On a different note, during high school I ran track, so I can help with training for running. On the academic side, I did very well in English and basic Math throughout school. During lessons I cater personally to the students needs, my goal is to help them learn the skill and not discourage them with it. I like to make learning anything exciting and fun while in a structured atmosphere!

Audra R.

Plainfield, IN

Work on fun music as well as classics.

About Audra

I received my training thru private lessons starting at the age of 6/7. Then when I got into high school I started studying under professors at Hanover College for 2 years for music performance. I chose to do the family thing first instead of going off to college. So I went back to College when I was 30 and 3 kids under 10 for performance/music ed. Crazy huh? But I loved it. But it was hard school full time long distance drive 3 kids to raise. I chose to raise my kids first and then go back for me. Which now brings us to today. I'm now and empty nester and loving the fact I can play piano an
y time I want day or night. With out waking anyone up. So it's fun again. And I want to make it fun to some new students to. I look forward to helping new students achieve their goals.
