Christian B.

Minneapolis, MN

I started tutoring cello in high school, and have done so off and on ever since. I love helping new students of the instrument to develop an appreciation for the rich diversity of sound it is capable of producing. I inherited from my own teachers an emphasis on teaching scales alongside short etudes and, eventually, longer works that introduce the student to the vast, exciting world of solo pieces for cello. I will also work with students on music from their school or extracurricular orchestra.

About Christian

Hi! My name is Christian B. I am a recent graduate of the University of Minnesota, where I majored in History and Political Science. I am originally from Minneapolis (I attended South High School), and I have tutored students of varying ages off and on for the last 6 years, primarily in social sciences and cello performance. I took cello lessons myself for 7 years, and participated in several regional, audition-based orchestras in the Twin Cities and the Washington, DC suburbs. In addition to my degree in Political Science, I have worked in both Congress and the Minnesota Legislature, been a d
elegate to several political conventions, and worked in both paid and unpaid positions for various political campaigns in Minnesota. After completing a year of law school, I left to instead pursue a Ph.D. in Political Science. I will be applying to several programs this fall, and in the meantime am excited to teach students more about the subjects I love! I look forward to meeting you!

Katherine C.

Minneapolis, MN

As a teacher, I always hope first and foremost to expose students to the joy of learning and playing music, and sharing music with others. Students will learn not only a solid technical foundation on the instrument, but also musicality and listening skills, always learning new ways of thinking and talking about music and the cello.

About Katherine

Music has been an essential component of my life for as long as I can remember. I started piano and cello lessons when I was very young, and have never looked back. I am passionate about sharing my love of music with every student. I always strive to create a positive and encouraging environment in my studio, where each student learns to recognize and capitalize on their own unique strengths, while developing awareness of areas for improvement, and the ability to self-correct. My goal is to guide students towards being self-sufficient musicians with the tools they need to express themselves cr
eatively through music.
I graduated with a BA in music from St. Olaf College, and have taught cello students from ages three on up since starting as a student there. I have worked with children of all ages and backgrounds in a wide variety of settings, and I always work hard to tailor my teaching style to the individual needs and personality of each child.

Byron D.

Minneapolis, MN

I've been teaching for over 20 years and have an in depth understanding of the mechanics of string playing. For me, it's exciting when a student has a breakthrough and is suddenly elevated to a new level.

I enjoy teaching any age or level especially when the student is really involved. Many of my students have become professionals but just as many just love it as a hobby. In either case, I want to give the best information possible i.e. knowledge that makes a difference whatever their goals.

About Byron

Former principal cellist of the Orquestra Simfunica Estadual de Sao Paulo, Byron is the son of a conductor. He played his first recital at the age of 8. At 18, he played the Saint Saens concerto in Chicago's Orchestra Hall. Later he played for the Metropolitan Opera Association in New York City. In his New York debut, the New York Times wrote,"a luscious sound tempered by a sensitive feeling for the music's rhythmic lilt and subtly shifting colors."

After launching a new website, Byron authored a new book, “10 of the Greatest Secrets of String Playing” on the teachings of legendary teacher
DC Dounis. He frequently does masterclasses on the “The Dounis Method.”

Byron is currently principal cellist of the Exultate Chamber Orchestra and he is a certified Suzuki instructor and has a Masters Degree in music from San Francisco State University.
