Linda C.

Campbell, CA

About Linda

I have been a public school music teacher for 30+ years. I am an optimistic, enthusiastic person, who will help you learn music reading in addition to music playing. I started on piano as a young child, and studied clarinet from elementary school through college, where I focused on french horn. I have a BA in Music Education from Humboldt State University, where I also earned my teaching credential. I have taught beginning, intermediate and advanced band and orchestra, in addition to choir and jazz band. I have been music director for over 10 middle school musicals. In my spare time I enjoy my
two dogs, going horseback riding, and reading.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am very friendly, and encouraging to new students. I have a lot of patience for those who are new to the study of music. I can also be more demanding for those who have learned the basics and want to improve their playing. I am a proponent of teaching the basics of music reading and common musical terms. I can teach music through a variety of curricula, and will work with my students to choose a method that best suits their goals. I have a large music studio in my home that has a separate entrance, which is conducive to music making (with it's own bathroom). I accept students 8 years of age and older.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Has a keyboard, but no drum set

*** Travel Equipment ***
I prefer to teach in my home studio.

*** Specialties ***
I have been teaching band, orchestra & choir in public schools for 30+ years.

Our son had his first lesson today. Linda was patient and encouraging. She was knowledgeable and we were pleased to see her play her trumpet along with our son and model for him how to hold the trumpet and play properly.

I have absolutely been delighted with my teacher Linda. At almost 50 years old, I was apprehensive about learning to play a new instrument, but she is so welcoming and encouraging. I have been taking lesson since the summer, and I look forward to seeing her every week. Even if I don't get in as much practice as I would like, She is understanding of life's commitments and never makes me feel bad. And despite my MANY questions, she takes the time to explain in detail so I can understand and incorporate the lesson in my playing. I never feel rushed during my lesson and can't wait to surprise her the next week to show her how much I've learned..

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you Maureen for the piano lessons you have been giving to my mom.. It was so wonderful yesterday my brother and his family came to the house and mom played "Love Me Tender", of course by Elvis Presley.
It was a tear jerking moment.
Mom has had issues with her brain from a car accident, and her piano lessons with you have been the best, best thing for her....from our entire family,
Thank you

Family Music Teacher

We have enjoyed having Maureen as our family’s music teacher. My son started taking flute lessons with Maureen in 2009 and advanced through the levels very quickly. He plays flute in YOSAC (Youth Orchestra of Southern Alameda County). He also plays saxophone and tried out and was selected for the Alameda County Honor Band. Maureen worked with him on jazz theory and improvisation and he plays in the jazz band at school. With Maureen, he worked through all six levels of Master Theory and is ready for the college level AP Music Theory at 14 years old. He also completed the MTAC (Music Teachers’ Association of California) Composer’s Today workbooks and used http://www.noteflight.com to write his own music and participate in composition contests. My daughter has been taking piano and violin lessons with Maureen and has been doing a great job. She is playing classical music on violin in school and in YOSAC (Youth Orchestra of Southern Alameda County). On piano she is learning to play the blues and jazz, as well as learning theory and composition. Both of my children have been able to successfully participate in the LaHonda Summer Music Camp. We have had a great experience with Maureen throughout the past 5 years and have enjoyed seeing her each week.

Piano Player

Last October my daugther received piano lessons as a gift for her birthday. We started taking lessons with Maureen in November, my daugther, who had just turned 6 was very excited to start classes. Maureen had been very patient with her and caters to her ability and age. Sometimes my daugther gets discouraged, because she feels like she isn't progresing as fast as she would like, but after class she is always excited and ready to come home and continue practicing. Overall, I am pleased with our experience thus far. Maureen is very accommodating and is equipping my daugther with the skills she needs to be a successful piano player.

Jesse M.

Palo Alto, CA

Learn about rhythm, melody, harmony, and dynamics, and how they apply to the trumpet. Explore the range of your instrument through various scales. Build solid skills through understanding the mechanics of how your body and instrument work together.

About Jesse

My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar class
es in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio along with my wife, Melissa. We're very happy to be developing our own business, and are ready to help you any way we can. She specializes in beginning piano lessons for children. Please check her account on TakeLessons if that's what you're looking for:

Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally in a relaxed setting and designed to work towards accomplishing student determined goals. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.

Lessons with small children are more focused on just having fun while developing a good musical foundation, but I prefer for them to have as much personal ownership of their lesson as possible like my older students as well.

I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have the "Young Musicians Showcase" every few months where individual students and band classes have a chance to perform and celebrate their accomplishments with friends and family.
Adult students occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.

Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

My studio is equipped with:

*Multiple Music Stands

*P.A. System

*Vocal and instrument microphones

*Guitars, Basses, and a Banjo

*Two guitar amps and a bass amp

*Various percussion including a fully equipped drum set

*An electric piano console

*A Trombone, Cornet, and Flute

*An extensive physical and virtual music library

*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to

*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype

Jesse has been a wonderful guitar and piano teacher for my 17-year old son, and has been above and beyond patient with him. He has tried a variety of techniques to encourage Jack's interest and to inspire him. I am sure that Jesse's very personalized teaching style would be great with any age student. I can attest from experience that he can really relate to teenagers. He will not give up on them and truly wants them to learn--and to love--music.

Jesse is a fantastic teacher. Really loved the way he had my daughter start working immediately on popular songs from her favorite artists--that was just a wonderful way of keeping her interested while also working on basics. He always tries to get her to think for herself about what's she's doing. He also has the patience of a saint for those lessons when she seems to be mentally out of it!

Jesse is a great instructor. I'm an adult who had no experience with music before. He is very patient and finds new ways to explain concepts I don't understand the first time. He uses my favorite songs to teach me new skills. He also takes time to find other songs for me to play. He urges me to do my best, and not to be afraid to make mistakes. I have learned a great deal about music and can hardly wait to go to my lessons!

Willie G.

San Jose, CA

About Willie

I've been a professional musician/educator for over 15 + years. I am an multi- instrumentalist which is a great benefit when studying with me. I bring to the table a broad world view and different perspectives of music pedagogy that I have been fortunate to attain throughout my music career and education. There is more than one way to attain a musical goal and I always work on giving different ways to attain such goals until one connects with student. I am a "real world" application type of teacher. I will not stray to musical processes that tend to hold people back from making music.

Bio:

Willie is a multi-instrumentalist, educator and clinician home based in San Jose Bay Area. He specializes in Afro-Latin percussion while exploring other sounds of Arabic, Flamenco, Brazilian and Vocal- Percussion. Willie has a unique and creative approach, inter- locking world music concepts with styles of contemporary music that include Rock, R&B, Hip- Hop, Funk and Jazz. Willie’s appreciation for cultures and music throughout the world influence and compel a creativity that makes Willie part of a new breed of percussionists in the music scene today.
Willie has performed and recorded with international artists and several local artists and groups in California bay area such as, favored nations recording artist James Robinson, Charangon Nueve, The Saul Kaye Band, Kaweh, Latin Lingo, Marc Russo and the Classy Cats, Full Spectrum, Mambo Tropical, Caixa, Silicon Vibe, Fito Reinoso, Piano y Son, San Jose State Latin Jazz Ensemble, KIDGUCH, BukleBros, Audio Dub, Latin Funk Express, White Roses, JT Horns.
Throughout his career he has had the opportunity to work with and perform with artists and groups such as; Trombonist, Conrad Herwig, Hal Galper Quintet, Vibraphonist and Marimba Master, Dave Samuels, Composer/Pianist, Eugenio Toussaint, Trombonist/Composer, Rob McConnel, Saxophonist, Richie Cole, Latin-percussionist/Composer, Pete Escovedo, Gabriel Espinosa y su grupo Ashanti, Jazz y Salsa Alto Maiz, Saxophonist/Composer, Benny Golsen. Maja with musicians, Mylious Johnson, on Drums, Alex Alessandroni and Jason Chapman on Keyboards, Asa ‘ACE’ Livingston on Bass.

Willie was born and raised in San Jose, California. In the younger years of his life, music was always around him in some sort of way. At the age of ten, Willie was introduced to the trumpet. When learning music through playing trumpet, he felt something deep inside and knew it was his destiny to play music for the rest of his life.
In high school, music was his main focus. During this time of his life, he was forming his music foundation. Focusing on trumpet primarily, until one day his band director said something that changed his path in music. He said, “The more music you get yourself involved in, the better musician you’ll become.” After that, Willie started to sing in concert choir. Eventually, he was able to get into the Mt. Pleasant Studio Jazz Singers, a group that had a national reputation winning approximately thirteen National Down Beat music awards at that time. The group was under the direction of Jan DeShera. Being fortunate to be part of winning two National Down Beat Awards for Vocal Jazz Performance. The group performed at the 1st Annual Monterey Jazz Festival at Sea Cruise, Ensanada, Mexico. In addition, performed on the main stage at Monterey Jazz Festival. Other performances included; Pacific Basin Music Festival, Honolulu, Hawaii, International Association of Jazz Educators (I.A.J.E.) convention, Anaheim, California, and San Jose Jazz Festival. During this time, Willie was also performing on trumpet and Latin- percussion with Portuguese group, Alcides y Legacy. At his last year of high school, he received the, James J. Guido Salute to Youth Award given by the Board of Supervisors of Santa Clara County, State of California.
The next journey in his life began at the Phil Mattson’s School for Music Vocations. Here he developed a stronger foundation studying classical and jazz piano, trumpet, voice, instrumental and vocal arranging, among other subjects. Having great opportunities studying with many great teachers, performing in all genres of music, there was something said that gave him inspiration. “If you’re not practicing as much as you should, it doesn't mean you’re a bad person. It just means that you’re cheating yourself and ultimately you’ll have to cheat someone else.”
After graduating from School for Music Vocations, Willie attended the University of Northern Iowa (U.N.I.) majoring in trumpet performance and jazz studies. In his first year attending, he played trumpet and Latin-percussion in U.N.I. Jazz Band 1, which was one of the premier collegian jazz bands in the country. The band was under the direction of Pianist/Composer/Arranger, Bob Washut. Willie was fortunate to be part of winning another National Down Beat Award for Big Band Performance. The group performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, Lostrott 106 in Belgium, Tallcorn Jazz Festival, and the Kansas City Jazz Festival.

Willie takes time to know student, excellent teacher

My son raves about Willie after each session, states what he is learning such as scales, how to read music, practicing new songs and getting to hear and play new genres of music on his trumpet. My son states Willie reminds him of a teacher he had in Tucson that worked with youth who took time to know his students, ask about what is going on in their life, building a relationship. Willie is flexible on the times of day for class and responds quickly to calls when we need to take a vacation day. This has been a truly positive experience, my son keeps wanting to come back for more classes.
