Vasiliy M.

Boston, MA

I earned MM in Jazz Performance, Bass Guitar Major, in 1993, and play/teach lessons for Bass Guitar since that time. My prospective students will receive rigorous training in both Bass Guitar performance and musicianship focused on the specifics of the subject of study. The level that we would begin lessons with will depend on the student's abilities and potentials. We will strive to create professional and friendly working atmosphere, and will begin lessons with careful assessment of the student's performing abilities; we will also set our goals, based on both individual expectations of students and on professional experience of the instructor. My teaching philosophy lies on three aspects; on patience with people; on love for the subject of teaching/study; and on rigorous training, offered to people, for their benefit and general musical development.

About Vasiliy

Hello,
I am Vasiliy M, Boston University School of Music Alumnus (DMA in Composition). We dwell in Boston since Fall 2002; before that time , we lived in New York, where I studied Composition at Mannes College, The New School For Music. I received both BM, and MM degrees from Mannes in 1999, and 2001, respectively. Before an arrival to US, in 1994, I studied Jazz Performance, Electric Bass Major, and Classical Composition, at Moldova State Conservatory, from 1988 to 1993, respectively.
I was raised in the family, where music is an essential part of its daily life; my father, Gr
igoriy, before his retirement, was a military band trombone player, and, quite naturally, I was exposed to music, and encouraged by my parents to learn playing an instrument of my choice, from my early childhood.
My mother, Anisia Kondrat'ievna, possesses both beautiful vocal abilities and perfect pitch , although she has never had a chance to develop her natural gifts any further. But I have heard my mother singing, and these moments remain one of the most touching and impressive musical experiences, that I have ever received, and remember to this very day.
Only after a considerable life experiences, abound of trials and mistakes, at the age of twenty five, I have come to a clear realization, that music remains my greatest passion, and that I would have to become a professional musician. With help and support of friends and colleagues, I have entered Community College in Soroki city, Moldova Republic, where I have studied Choral Conducting for Amateurs. I have graduated from school in May of 1988, having written a few instrumental and vocal compositions of my own, and, quite unexpectedly for myself, was invited, that summer, to visit Moldova State Conservatory, with the prospect of audition for the Composition Major. After the meeting with the Chair of the Department, I was offered an opportunity to be accepted to the Master Degree Program in Composition, provided I will have completed two years of preliminary studies of Music Theory, Music Harmony/Voice Leading, and many other related disciplines.
Why do I bring all of these facts to this Essay? I know for the fact now, that I was not ready for what was awaiting ahead of me, back then. There was no way, that I could cope with the demands of Composition Program curriculum. But I have had love for music, that my parents have implemented in me throughout my childhood; I have had natural abilities, that Heavens supplied me with: and I have had a chance to make my dream a reality, providing I do everything that I will have to, during the following years of struggles and study.
The decision was made, and my studies have begun. I have come through every mistake, defeat, and mind-barriers imaginable, and if it would not be a continuous stream of professional help and support, that I have received from my numerous teachers, mentors, and professors, along the years of study, my goals could never be attained to any modest, but real degree.
Whenever I have a chance to teach, tutor, or assist other musicians with their study, my past experience always reminds me, that any person may experience some difficulties of various nature with the learning material, from time to time, and that those difficulties should be addressed by student's teacher with the highly individual approach, however time-and effort-consuming it may be. Patience and respect, in regard to the students, have become as important aspects of teaching to me, as those of discipline and professionalism.
My studies have come to an end; I see now, that the world of music is an endless entity, for it has no boundaries, and we all have to maintain our further progress, in order to move to our chosen destinations, and to help others with their own advancements.

Sincerely
Vasiliy M.

*** Lesson Details ***
I would be more than willing to assist my prospective students with their various musical endeavors, and people's willingness to either play music instruments, take voice lessons, or to study Music Theory/ Musicianship disciplines will serve us as a starting point for our work. Through the diligent preliminary talk we will discuss various aspects of interest that my students have developed in relation to music, so we could plan and design our future lessons according to an initial discussion. My job and responsibility will be to make an intelligent assessment of my students' natural abilities for the given subject of study, to create vigorous learning atmosphere during our meetings, and to give my students professional instructions to the best of my humble abilities, for the benefits of their musical , aesthetic, and personal development. I will encourage my students to learn as much as they can, at the given moment, but I will not ever attempt to exceed people's natural capabilities. Participation in Music with love and fun should be as rewarding and valuable to the music amateur, as professional performing career ( with its highly demanding standards) stands for classically trained musicians. During our study sessions, we will work upon the goals and tasks that we have discussed at the beginning of our meetings. My ultimate goal as a teacher was and will always be to help my students discover and bring forward their best creative potentials through the intensive musical studies and practice, and, at the same time, to favor heir initial interest's transformation into a deep, serious passion.

My son, Siddarth has been learning Mr.Vasily for about 2 and half years now and I can tell that Mr.Vasily is a great teacher. He's dedicated and expresses a lot of patience when my son forgets or misses his notes. Mr.Vasily also encourages Siddarth to excel by being constructive and not in a negative way, which both my husband and I really appreciate. To excel in anything, it's important to have a good teacher, and we are very happy that our son's learning from one such teacher!

Vasily is a wonderful teacher. He is kind, patient, and relates very well to our shy daughter. He is teaching her to "know" the piano, in a delightful and disciplined way, and of course he is teaching her to play. Juniper leaves every session feeling accomplished and happy! We are very happy to have started lessons with him.

Cory J.

Somerville, MA

I've been playing bass guitar for about 6 years, playing in a variety of styles and getting to know the instrument as a writing tool.

About Cory

Hi there, thanks for checking out my page! My name is Cory and I'm a professional musician born and raised in NYC. I've been playing guitar for about 13 years, and in that time music has become my utmost passion in the world. I've always listened to and appreciated music; for the joy, excitement, emotion, intellectual value and pure entertainment in can give to people. Music is a universal language that brings people of any and all kinds together, and just as much as listening to and performing music, I love teaching. I've been teaching guitar and bass guitar for a number of years now, and sha
ring my knowledge, experience, and love of music has increased by devotion to the art even more than I thought possible. I love guiding a beginner along on their first steps to discovering their musical selves, reigniting an old flame in those who have put down their instrument for a while a seek to pick it back up, and help to hone and refine the skills of the more experienced musicians who are looking for that direction in their practice that they just can't grasp on their own. No matter your experience level, age, gender, race, height, hair color or favorite ice cream flavor, you can always turn to music as an outlet for your creativity and happiness.

A little about myself: I first picked up the guitar after listening to AC/DC pound out those riffs like their lives depended on it and defined rock and roll for me as a young teenager. My dad bought me my first guitar, and after playing my first power chord I haven't left the instrument since. After classic rock was my first musical love, I continued along and delved into more contemporary rock and heavy metal genres later in my teenage years and learned how to play some of my favorite songs. Soon after, I became obsessed with technique and music theory and started shedding to play like the pros. Eventually I realized that music would be all that I really wanted to do professionally, and enrolled at the music program at Hunter College. I have since studied classical guitar and jazz and became obsessed with that music as well, performing several solo guitar recitals, chamber music recitals, jazz combo and big band gigs. I have recently graduated Hunter with a Master's degree in guitar performance and am playing in a couple of full time bands, collaborating with other classical musicians, and practicing and writing solo guitar repertoire.

I have been teaching guitar in a huge variety of styles for a number of years, and have been teaching bass guitar for the last couple of years as well. If you want to learn it, I will teach it to you.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons will be friendly and laid back, yet emphasize hard work and practice. You should come to my lessons with both a desire to learn and a desire to have fun. If you are a beginner, at first we will drill the basics and fundamentals, but in new and creative ways that will get you playing real music as soon as possible and as often as possible. I tailor the lessons to your specific interests and goals, taking material from a variety of resources to enhance the learning process. You will learn to play the music you want to, and also improvise and compose music of your own. Technique and creativity will be achieved with hard work, and in time you will learn to play anything you can come up with.

For more experienced guitarists, I expect you to come in and either play something and/or have an idea of what you want to work on, and we'll go from there. We can work on everything from pure chops, to learning specific songs or pieces, music theory, composition, improvisation and everything in between. All I ask is that you bring pencil and paper, a metronome if you have one, and a desire to make some real progress.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Practice Room: guitar amplifier, grand piano, nearly soundproof rooms
Home Studio: guitar amp, bass amp, cables

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will come with my guitar, a metronome, and a cable if my student is studying electric guitar. My student should have a guitar, paper, a pencil, a metronome, and an amplifier and cable if he were studying electric guitar.

*** Specialties ***
I take an approach that is universal to genres and stylistic preferences, using a combination of demonstration and conversation to get concepts across. I then attempt to gauge the student's tastes, goals, and overall skill level, and I tailor the lessons specifically to them. I encourage an understanding of musical fundamentals and an understanding of musical purpose first, and then I get into specific teaching methods; such as the teaching of specific pieces, the teaching of composition, or the teaching of improvisation. I try to incorporate history and musical philosophy whenever I can, and I try to simplify big concepts into their essential points.

I specialize in classical music from all periods with an emphasis on the 20th and 21st century. I play and teach jazz from the straight ahead standards to free jazz, which I also specialize in. My background comes from blues, rock, and heavy metal playing, and I am adept at playing and teaching those genres as well. I also am beginning to study Eastern European, Central Asian and Eastern Asian music, and I find that many practices in those styles apply to western music in many ways.

Cory is a fantastic instructor. Having previously taken violin lessons with very impatient instructors, I was anxious that classical guitar lessons would be the same since I had no experience. But Cory is not only patient, willing to repeat concepts and move a pace that best suits you, but also kind and genuinely enthusiastic about your progress with the instrument. I would highly recommend him as a teacher.

Nathan was great. My son didn't want to take piano lessons at first, but had completely changed his mind by the end of his first lesson. He said Nathan was "so cool" and he showed me all the things he learned in his first 30 minutes. We can't wait to continue his lessons.

I've had several guitar and music instructors both before and during college, and none have made music feel so intuitive and natural as Bob. I was very impressed at his ability to not only teach his thorough knowledge of the instrument and the art, but also with his willingness to individualize his teaching style and lesson content for me. He brings an enthusiasm to each lesson that is hard to find elsewhere. I've learned more these last few months with Bob than I've learned in the last 5-10 years! Unfortunately I recently decided to pursue a graduate school opportunity out of state and won't be able to continue studying with him now, but I intend to return back to Bob during breaks and when I return to Massachusetts.

I wholeheartedly recommend Bob as a guitar instructor!
