Favorite Venues for Singing Performances in Los Angeles

By Noah W. - Los Angeles Voice Teacher

For those of us that live in Los Angeles, we are lucky to have an almost endless repository of great musical performances of all kinds happening all over town. As one of the major artistic centers of the US, our city boasts the highest caliber of performing artists in all genres. The artists may reside locally or they may be visiting from anywhere else in the world, but rest assured that any given evening there is an excellent vocal performance going on somewhere in Los Angeles. Whether you are a beginner taking singing lessons in Los Angeles or simply looking for a place to hear some good music, the following venues are a few of my favorite places to go for a variety of vocal performances.

First and foremost, one of the best places to see great vocal performances in the city is also one of the
most visually striking buildings in the world: Disney Hall. Designed by Frank Gehry and home to the LA Philharmonic, there are many concerts of all types held every season at Disney Hall, and one can always be assured that the performances will be of the highest caliber. It is well worth any music fan’s time to take a look at what concerts are available to attend each season at Disney Hall.

For the greatest rock concerts in the world, look no further than The Greek Theater, majestically located in Griffith Park. The calendar at the Greek reads like a veritable who's who of great artists, both past and present. Any style of vocal performance can be expected to be seen at the Greek. Similar to the Greek is the Hollywood Bowl, an acoustically amazing outdoor amphitheater situated at the foot of the Hollywood Hills. Again, one can expect to hear the finest singing performances in the world, from rock to jazz to world to Broadway - the Hollywood Bowl is another venue that has it all.

However, L.A. doesn't only offer the biggest acts in the world; it also has a thriving community of local musicians that perform nightly in smaller venues - much smaller. One of my favorite places to go for great vocal performances is The Dresden, an old Hollywood throwback that features the legendary Marty and Elayne on a nightly basis. Marty and Elayne have been performing their unique style of lounge music for 30 years. Their covers range throughout popular music history, from old show tunes to radio hits by artists like the Bee Gees and Stevie Wonder. There are also a large number of guest vocalists that sing with them, augmenting their familiar sound with a new musical flavor nearly every time they perform.

Whatever the flavor of vocal performance that you can imagine, LA has it all. If you are taking singing lessons in Los Angeles, go ahead and see for yourself - you'll be glad you did.

Joe is very patient with my daughter. He truly wants her to learn and understand what she is learning and most of all to enjoy music. He goes at her pace while still encouraging her to set goals for herself. He will not move forward until she has mastered what she has learned.

Music teacher that motivates his students.

My daughter has taken group and individual music lessons with Jose for three years. He is a teacher that meets students at their instructional level and motivates them to give their best effort in their learning. He also encourages my daughter with singing; he gives her vocal lessons in addition to guitar and piano. Jose also offers my daughter a safe learning environment. As a parent of a teenager, I greatly appreciate his patience with my daughter.

I always leave my lesson in a good mood!

I've taken voice lessons with Lauren for over a year now and have really seen an improvement in my voice. I've taken voice lessons for the past 10+ years and Lauren's approach to teaching is one of the best I've experienced. She explains exercises and techniques in a way that makes sense and if I don't understand it the first time she finds another way to explain it visually or metaphorically. Lauren adapts the lesson to what I need each week. She knows which exercises to do with me to prepare my voice for the song I'm singing. She is able to sense when my voice needs a rest or when she can push me to work harder. I get to choose the songs I sing, but Lauren also helps me find songs or decide which song is the best challenge for me. I highly recommend Lauren as a teacher!

I'm a 55 yr old female that hasn't taken voice lessons in the last 20+ years. From that time until recently I would just do karaoke off and on. I started taking lessons with Tanisha about seven months ago. She is the absolute best thing that has ever happened to my voice. Initially I just wanted to learn how to use my "alto" voice more effectively. I avoided singing soprano songs because it was very uncomfortable and it didn't sound right to me. But to my surprise Tanisha convinced me that I am in deed a first soprano. She started working with me on my singing with much attention on my upper range. Thanks to Tanisha, for the first time in my life I have started feeling like a real singer! She has truly taken me places vocally that I could have only dreamed of going. Even when I sing lower it sounds tons better. I practice consistently because I'm so excited about all of the progress I have made in just a seven month period. And I am just blown away that I have those high notes now! When it comes to the voice Tanisha is definitely a miracle worker! On top of that she has this bubbly personality and from the day that I met her I felt like I've been knowing her for years. She's like a new best friend!

For the past 6 months I have taken voice lessons with Tanisha. She has a very warm personality that makes you feel instantly comfortable and at ease. She is passionate about teaching and also tailors the lessons to who you are as an individual so that she can help to extract the very best out of you as a student. She is encouraging and never judgmental and meets you right where you are at. Most of all, she has abounding patience. I have seen an overall improvement in my vocal ability and can now sing in a range that I thought was impossible for me.

Amazing singng instructor

Crystal has increased my daughter’s self-esteem and expressiveness through song. My daughter is now writing her own poetry and song lyrics, as well as being able to combat her once shyness quality. She loves to perform in front of others now and has a confidence level that amazes me, especially now that she is going into those “teen” years. I think a lot of thanks needs to go to Crystal, for assisting my daughter in reaching her current creative level!

I had never taken vocal lessons before, but I have always been interested in them. A few months ago, I finally decided to take classes and I signed up with Melody. I was a bit apprehensive because I've never sung for other people, but Melody made me feel comfortable and she was and has been completely supportive. She identifies problem areas like breathing, improper form, or technique and provides constructive criticism. Melody pushed me to hit notes I've never been able to and I've noticed my vocal range expanding and the overall quality and tone of my projection has improved. I’m extremely happy with Melody and highly recommend her to anyone looking to take singing classes.

I've always had a passion for singing, yet I had no experience as I believed I had a terrible voice.

That is what was in my mind when I signed up for Melody's vocal lessons. I always thought that a low self esteem beginner like me would be too nervous to sing in front of a professional musician. All of that changed when I stepped into Melody's studio on my first lesson. As soon as I walked through the door, I was greeted with a warm, welcoming smile. Throughout the lesson, Melody was extremely friendly yet very professional. From that point on, I knew I was going to have a great time learning from her.
And I did.
Melody blew me away with her singing; her voice was controlled, professional, and very beautiful. She knew how to effectively convert her skills into lessons, and there was always something new to learn every single week. Techniques such as proper breathing, warm ups, posture, and voice control were some of the many new things I would have never known of without the aid of Melody. She tackled every one of my questions thoroughly and with great detail no matter how dumb I thought my questions were. She carefully observed me every time I sang, and gave me personal tips that would improve my vocals. After just a few lessons, I was able to confidently sing in front of others.

In the end, I have to say goodbye to Melody as I am moving to a different county. I hate having to leave, as Melody was a phenomenal instructor; she set the bar high for anyone else I choose to learn from. I highly recommend her, and encourage anyone who wants to improve their singing to apply for her lessons.

Singing
I can finally sing with confidence!

I'm a 29 year old aspiring actress who lives in Hollywood. I've always loved to sing but often felt challenged when singing with my upper register. And because of that I was not comfortable to go to certain auditions that require singing. About 3 months ago I decided to make a change and start taking voice lessons with Melody. Melody was referred by one of my actor friends who also took lessons from her and found helpful. At our first lesson she conducted a thorough vocal assessment and pointed out my trouble area, which is singing with upper register. She also corrected my breathing habits at the spot and we warmed up for 20 mins. Right after the 1st session I could feel the improvement and I was very excited. With the practical techniques Melody teaches me, after only three months I can say that I'm in love with singing, and I'm much more confidant with my voice. Next time I'm definitely gonna take the audition that requires singing!

Melody is very nice and enthusiastic, definitely worth trying!
Samara K. Los Angeles, CA

In Music Performance sessions, focus is on communicating the character's journey, and approaching the song as a script to gain mastery of action. The emphasis on delivering the emotional narrative of the song allows for the student to release nerve inducing self consciousness. Vocal technique is always integrated into each lesson, allowing the growth of a solid foundation in pitch matching, usage of breath, and learning more about your own unique voice as an instrument.

I worked with Samara on monologues for college auditions and for my showcase, we worked together for a little under (I think) three months. She's such a great teacher, definitely no complaints. I really loved working with her and she totally helped build my confidence when it came to performing in front of others—I'm (or was) ironically shy/weird about performing monologues and pieces in front of people and have been since I started doing theatre (10 years ago). Nonetheless, I got over that after Samara helped me with my acting and I don't get pre-performance anxiety/nerves anymore. I don't think I would've been able to pull off any of my monologues had it not been for her lessons, she actually helped me choose one of the audition monologues because I couldn't find a second one. In the whole monologue/character-building process, she took notes and asked me questions that really made me think about my character and their motives and actions and whatnot. She's also very encouraging and would commend me on anything I did well or improved on. Point is, Samara is a superb teacher and human!! I'd confidently recommend her classes to anyone who needs help with their acting. Five stars because she definitely was the best instructor ever!!

I can't really put into words how great (and funny) Samara is. I wasn't sure if learning how to act online was going to work for me, but I can safely say after 5 Skype sessions with Samara, they have been totally worth it and more! In our lessons, I have learned about how to approach and analyze a script, what to do in cold-readings, handling nerves, how to give a memorable audition, really nifty relaxation and concentration techniques, and so much more. I always value Samara's insights not only into the craft of acting but the business aspect of it as well. Basically, she's a rockstar and I just feel lucky I stumbled upon her lesson page. Without which, I don't know if I'd have the confidence to pursue my dream of becoming a professional actor!! Thanks a billion, Samara!

I really did learn so much in every single one of my lessons with Samara! From Acting Technique to character work, to scene study, to how to nail comedy and drama, to classical text, and not to mention the helpful breath work and insanely fun exercises and warm-ups. Samara is the the absolute kindest, most compassionate, informative, hilarious, and most importantly - talented- not only acting coach, but teacher in general that I have ever spent time with. One of her talents is for creating a safe environment to work and grow in, something that I have found to be very rare amongst acting classes in general. I was excited literally everyday for my lessons, especially because I recognized how much hard work and dedication she put into it them herself.

Samara is the absolute best acting teacher I have had, and I’m so happy and thankful to have had the pleasure of being her student!
