Favorite Venues for Singing Performances in Los Angeles

By Noah W. - Los Angeles Voice Teacher

For those of us that live in Los Angeles, we are lucky to have an almost endless repository of great musical performances of all kinds happening all over town. As one of the major artistic centers of the US, our city boasts the highest caliber of performing artists in all genres. The artists may reside locally or they may be visiting from anywhere else in the world, but rest assured that any given evening there is an excellent vocal performance going on somewhere in Los Angeles. Whether you are a beginner taking singing lessons in Los Angeles or simply looking for a place to hear some good music, the following venues are a few of my favorite places to go for a variety of vocal performances.

First and foremost, one of the best places to see great vocal performances in the city is also one of the most visually striking buildings in the world: Disney Hall. Designed by Frank Gehry and home to the LA Philharmonic, there are many concerts of all types held every season at Disney Hall, and one can always be assured that the performances will be of the highest caliber. It is well worth any music fan’s time to take a look at what concerts are available to attend each season at Disney Hall.

For the greatest rock concerts in the world, look no further than The Greek Theater, majestically located in Griffith Park. The calendar at the Greek reads like a veritable who's who of great artists, both past and present. Any style of vocal performance can be expected to be seen at the Greek. Similar to the Greek is the Hollywood Bowl, an acoustically amazing outdoor amphitheater situated at the foot of the Hollywood Hills. Again, one can expect to hear the finest singing performances in the world, from rock to jazz to world to Broadway - the Hollywood Bowl is another venue that has it all.

However, L.A. doesn't only offer the biggest acts in the world; it also has a thriving community of local musicians that perform nightly in smaller venues - much smaller. One of my favorite places to go for great vocal performances is The Dresden, an old Hollywood throwback that features the legendary Marty and Elayne on a nightly basis. Marty and Elayne have been performing their unique style of lounge music for 30 years. Their covers range throughout popular music history, from old show tunes to radio hits by artists like the Bee Gees and Stevie Wonder. There are also a large number of guest vocalists that sing with them, augmenting their familiar sound with a new musical flavor nearly every time they perform.

Whatever the flavor of vocal performance that you can imagine, LA has it all. If you are taking singing lessons in Los Angeles, go ahead and see for yourself - you'll be glad you did.

I have been taking singing lessons since I was 7 years old and understand the importance of developing a solid technique. I majored in jazz voice in college but am versed in all styles. Singing to me is the expression of the soul and I love to help others develop their voice.

About Glynis
Glynis has been reading music since before she knew how to read words. Her mother started teaching her piano lessons at age 3, and she started taking voice lessons at age 7. She learned from an early age to practice every day. She has taught all levels and ages of piano and voice for many years. Glynis specializes in jazz voice, but has a very strong classical and musical theatre background. She is an arranger, composer, educator, and singer. She received her AA in Professional Music from SWCC, school for music vocations, then got her BA in Jazz Studies, Vocal Performance at CSU Sacramento. Sh
e is currently working on her Masters in Jazz Studies, Vocal Performance at the Bob Cole Conservatory inside of CSU Long Beach. While studying she is the Graduate Assistant for Christine Guter, and directs the 2nd vocal jazz ensemble, Jazz and Tonic, at the school.

My teaching philosophy is to have a safe, positive, fun, and effective learning environment for all of my students. I believe it is important to be a well rounded musician, therefore I love my students to have a solid understanding of what they are doing. I strongly encourage all of my students to learn theory along with piano or voice, so they understand what they are doing. Each student is unique, therefore each student has a different lesson plan. I do expect that my students will practice during the week in order to grow, since this helps them reach their goals. I do let students pick some of their own repertoire, since it is very important for them to be motivated during the week. I can teach from early Baroque music to modern day and everything in between. Music is expression, therefore I believe it is very important for my students to love what they are working on.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in my apartment with a keyboard.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can bring a keyboard, but it would be easier if they had one.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz voice, with a strong background in classical and musical theatre. I also specialize in piano, music theory, songwriting and arranging.

I have been teaching and singing in performances for 30 years.
We work on sight reading, ear training, and theory.
I have an easy style and like my students to enjoy their lessons.

About Cory
So you want to play an instrument? Well I have taught for over 40 years and have developed special programs for you on piano, guitar, bass, voice and other instruments for you to learn. From easy beginner to the most advanced, I will help you to learn the songs you love! Whether we use the most modern technology in my professional recording studio or just some chords or perhaps learning to sight read something for a talent show, I can take you all the way to the highest performance level. Your goals are my goals.
I have studied with some of the most famous teachers in the world, includi
ng Charlie Parker's pianist Walter Bishop Jr. and Dizzy Gillespie's musical director Mike Longo, among many others.
I also have the experience of over 400 gigs a year to bring to your lesson. I have performed on piano, guitar and bass and vocals with famous stars and some really great bands which will help me answer many of your questions. I am currently still working, teaching and recording all the time. I also have a professional recording studio in my home which you can take full advantage of.

*** Lesson Details ***
I want you to have fun learning and can help you with understanding and memorizing your songs.
I focus on sight-reading, ear training (like jamming and playing blues) and theory. You get to choose the areas you would like to learn.
Once we have established the basics including melody and chords, we will pick songs you want to learn to play with your friends or just by yourself. We can use music books or go on YouTube to learn your songs.
I have helped students with auditions as well as performances. After only a few lessons you will hear and see things differently than ever before.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio comes complete with acoustic and electric keyboards, acoustic and electric guitars, electric bass and amps to play through, as well as professional microphones for recording. I use ProTools for recording which is used in every major studio around the world and it's loaded with great software for demos or mastering songs.

*** Specialties ***
I teach beginner, intermediate and advanced students.
I teach all styles of music including Classical, Jazz, and Rock/Pop/Blues.
I also teach songwriting, performing and recording in my ProTools studio.

About Robert
It is my experience that no matter what kind of music you end up playing a solid classical piano background is invaluable. I was privately trained in classical piano from the ages 5 - 17 in Los Angeles, California. My teachers were Mary Brady, Mae Gilbert Reese and Jeane Weiss. I graduated from Harvard High School and then graduated from UCLA with BA in art. I am a Los Angeles based artist and composer. Recently I was nominated Best Music Director of the year by the L.A. Weekly for my work on 'Head the Musical' at the Met Theater Los Angeles in 2010. I am currently mounting an opera I wrote
at the Met Theater. I have been teaching private piano lessons to students ages 8 to adult for the last six years.

My experience as a musical director has honed my skills as a good communicator and teacher. I know how to get people trained and motivated to perform on stage with confidence no matter what their skill level.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons focus on reading, technique and basic music theory. I always start my lessons with scales and exercises. This develops good technique and primes the student for music theory. The rest of the lesson is focused on reading and performance. I expose students to different classical composers like Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. Once they have mastered a few pieces, students are then encouraged to study the composers they enjoy the most. It is important for students to enjoy the music that they are learning as I expect them to practice everyday.

*** Travel Equipment ***

Stop wasting your time - take Robert.

I only had the pleasure of taking piano lessons with Robert for two months since I got into Harvard and had to move to the East Coast, but I can confidently attest that he is a phenomenal teacher. To begin with, Robert brings to the table not only his classical training but also an open, creative, out-of-the-box approach. He is extremely knowledgeable and seasons lessons with fantastic facts about composers and pieces which makes everything a lot more interesting and memorable. lessons are versatile and designed to develop several key skills simultaneously. I never really played the piano before but after only two months with Robert I could read notes, develop my technique and actually play two beautiful pieces! If you are looking for a well-rounded, brilliant, cool teacher - search no more.

Having sung and performed many different styles of singing, I have a unique understanding of how the voice works and what it needs to grow. In lessons I focus on specific exercises that strengthen the voice and develop breath support. I teach my students how to expand their range and release any physical tension that is getting in the way of healthy singing. We then apply this technique to the student's repertoire. I let my students sing a wide variety of repertoire, encouraging them to let their passions guide the repertoire we work on in lessons.

About Emily
I teach to help people find their inner rock star. Everyone can sing! But for many people, fear is an obstacle. I know firsthand how much courage it takes to stand up and sing. I teach to help others experience the same healing I have experienced through music. My approach to singing is informed by my education and years of performance experience. I teach my students how to embrace their fears and move through them to the other side. I also facilitate a supportive student/teacher relationship based upon mutual respect and kindness. Most importantly, I encourage my students to trust themselves
and their innate musical gifts. This develops their self confidence and ultimately leads them to their purest, most authentic sound.

I lived and breathed music and singing throughout my childhood, and I continue to today. I have over fifteen years of classical music training and performance experience. I attended California State University Northridge where I studied classical voice, art song, and opera performance. Since attaining my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Arts I have performed opera and musical theatre professionally across Los Angeles. I have since left opera performance to focus on my true musical passions: pop, R&B, jazz, musical theatre, and teaching.

**Lesson Details**
I tailor my teaching to each student's needs and desires. I teach all levels of singing, child to adult, beginner to advanced. If you are a beginner, I will quickly help you understand and access your instrument. If you are a more experienced singer, I will help you identify your opportunities for growth and we start from there. I focus on releasing tension and building a strong core foundation. You will learn how to develop consistent breath control, expand your range, and grow your voice into a powerful and beautiful sound!

**Studio Equipment**
Piano
Acoustic guitar
Music stand
ZoomH2 microphone and recording device
Musical theater/classical singer library

**Specialties**
I teach the same technique for all styles of singing - pop, R&B, jazz, gospel, musical theatre, and classical. I help my students make minor changes for each style, but the core foundational technique remains the same. I specialize in breath support, vocal chord closure, range expansion, vocal register negotiation, body alignment, relieving tension, healthy belting, emotional support, and acting for singers.

Emily is the best! She's super friendly, patient and encouraging. I've only been taking lessons with her for a few months and can already hear a difference in my voice. She has helped me correct the mistakes I had been making in posture and muscle engagement. By providing a positive and supportive lesson environment, she has also helped me feel more confident and comfortable with the idea of singing in front of people other than my cat.

Every voice is beautiful in it's own unique way. I believe that it is important to find your own voice and thrive in any musical style you desire. I was trained classically at Chapman University, where I also took part in musicals, as well as a cappella. I have performed on the Hollywood Bowl stage, in a Covergirl promotion for Pitch Perfect 2, and at the Beacon Theatre on Broadway. I love teaching all styles of music and encourage my students to explore the wonderful world of music.

I have been playing and singing since I was 8 years old, and recently graduated from Chapman University with Music Performance major with a double emphasis in Vocal and Oboe Performance. I am currently attending the University of Southern California for my Masters in Oboe Performance, while teaching in-

Proper Singing Posture - What You Need to Know
Before you learn how to breathe, sing, or play any kind of instrument correctly, you need to ensure that you're creating the proper posture with your body.
