One of my favorite instruments to teach-- I often say that my specialty is convincing people that they should play double reed instruments! Generally seen as more of a challenge, double reeds like the oboe can be frustrating for beginners, but don't worry-- I can guide you through any troubles and help you learn this beautiful instrument.
My approach is completely tailored to your individual needs. However, you can expect to focus on scales, etudes, solo repertoire, and perhaps even some more non-traditional fare, if you like (e.g. pop music, improvisation, etc.)! A focus is always given to developing and refining technique, creating supported tone production, and being as musically expressive as possible.
I am a freelance oboe and English horn player in the Chicagoland area. I have a Master of Music in Oboe Performance from Northern Illinois University and have been teaching for over 8 years. Music should be accessible to everyone and my teaching philosophy is to promote music understanding and education so the student can enjoy music for the rest of their life.
I offer 30, 45, and 60 min lessons either in my Long Beach studio or online. I've been teaching oboe for 8 years and my students have gone on to win scholarships and place in honor orchestras. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!
**What should you expect during your first lesson?**
If you've been playing oboe for awhile, bring the last piece of music you worked on and any method books that you've been using. I feel it's less stressful for students to begin by working on music they're already familiar with. By the end of the lesson I'll be able to assess what books would be best for you moving forward.
If you're a brand new beginner, bring the Rubank Elementary Method for Oboe book, your instrument, and reeds. Even if you've never taken your oboe out of the case or read a note of music, I'll make sure that you get off on the right foot!
Interested in learning the oboe? I enjoy teaching students of all ages and levels.
Whether you are playing in your school band, getting ready for a contest, or just want to learn the basics, I can provide you with one-on-one instruction to improve your playing.
I am a graduate student at USC Thornton School of Music, where I specialize in oboe performance. My studio is located near the USC campus, and I am also available to teach at the student's home.
