One of my favorite instruments to teach-- I often say that my specialty is convincing people that they should play double reed instruments! Generally seen as more of a challenge, double reeds like the oboe can be frustrating for beginners, but don't worry-- I can guide you through any troubles and help you learn this beautiful instrument.
I am a classically trained performer with a Master's degree from London's Royal College of Music. I love finding each student's own learning style to tailor the experience, and I encourage my students to make their own decisions about musical expression (with plenty of guidance, of course!). In my work as a performer I have played with orchestras all over the world, from the South London Sinfonia to the Bombay Chamber Orchestra. My musical life is full of variety, and I think that the experiences I've had as a musician make me a creative and thoughtful teacher. *** Lesson Details *** I wouldn't call myself strict, but I do have high standards. I expect my students to put in the work at home, so that we can get the most out of lesson time, but I think that my expectations are ...
From a young age, I have been deeply involved in the musical community. I began studying piano when I was three, and throughout my education, I’ve learned from such accomplished instructors as Belle Mehus and Christopher Taylor. After receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance from The University of Mary in North Dakota, I continue to study, teach, perform, and compose. I’ve also studied guitar and bass for nearly twenty years. I love playing and teaching these instruments because of the strong correlations between the way they are tuned and played and the way western music theory works—as well as the pure enjoyment that comes from them! Additionally, I have twenty years of education in oboe and other woodwind instruments. I was principle oboist for two orchestras and reached ...
I have been teaching oboe for almost 20 years and I really enjoy watching my students blossom as wonderful musicians. I believe anyone can learn to play the oboe and I love helping them reach their musical goal. I concentrate on the fundamental techniques (such as proper embouchure, hand position, and breathing) and I encourage and push my students to be the best oboist they can be.
I got my bachelor's degree in oboe performance at USC and master's degree at Indiana University. I work well with all ages and have been teaching private lessons for almost 20 years. I play with different professional orchestras and coach youth orchestra's woodwind section.
I'm a recent graduate of the Theatre Program at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Before attending college, I was one of the top Oboe players in Michigan, earning I Division medals in every Solo and Ensemble competition that I was a part of. At Northwestern, I studied under Melissa Foster who has many students who have earned parts in Broadway shows. My ACT scores landed me a solid 33, with scores of at least 34 in each subject during different testing dates. I am very patient and love working with others. I feel confident in teaching others, and know how to work with students of all levels.
Students will gain a better understanding of all aspects of oboe playing, including; tone production, vibrato, finger technique, reed making and care, instrument maintenance and basic adjustments. In addition, they will be exposed to the standards of the oboe repertoire.
I have been teaching students of all ages for 12 years. This includes private lessons, 2 years of university students at North Dakota State University, small group lessons, and chamber coaching, across the Midwest and in the Los Angeles area. I believe that each student is different, and tailor lesson plans and repertoire according to each students' specific needs in order to facilitate maximum growth as a musician. I believe in creating a fun and encouraging atmosphere, and frequently turn to humor, games, and imagination to bring the lessons to the complete understanding of the student. I've also had an active performing career, appearing with the Minnesota Orchestra, Minnesota Opera, Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra, The Colburn School, the National Wind Ensemble, and a variety of
