Marissa R.

Sunnyside, NY

I will help you choose repertoire and develop it for optimum vocal health, and beautiful, pure tonality.

About Marissa

I am a professional vocalist with a broad range of experience. With a Bachelor of Music (Musical Theater) from Belmont University I am more than qualified to teach with a well supported vocal foundation.

As a true lover of music and arts, I encourage my students to sing as much as possible! My confident and exciting approach to singing brings out the best in my students, which translates beautifully to real life situations.

*** Lesson Details ***
Each person is different in nature and each performer has a personal style and goal. My goal is to get to know what kind of voice and style e
ach student desires, and base the curriculum off of that knowledge.

A basic lesson looks like this:
5 minutes of breathing exercises
10-25 minutes of vocal technique exercises (e.g. scales)
15-30 minutes of repertoire (song) work (practical application of exercises)

The time and efforts put in to voice lessons depends on the student's desire to learn and accomplish goals. There will be recitals for those students who are ready and wish to participate, or can be a goal to work toward for students who don't yet feel comfortable singing in front of an audience.

A beginner, within 12 lessons, will be able to successfully and proficiently sing through at least two songs of their choice, and will have a deeper understanding of his/her voice and music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room studio, piano, room for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students must have a piano or keyboard, and must buy the music (through me or on their own) that they wish to keep.

There is no equipment, aside from the books I bring in and take home, that I will provide.

*** Specialties ***
I am a very well rounded singer and teacher. My training started in classical voice, before I moved on to jazz, pop and musical theater styles, and I teach all styles.

The basics of singing are the same for all genres of music. Scales and exercises and proper breath support, along with a basic knowledge of music theory, are essential in becoming an accomplished singer. I can help you!

Joshua M. - FLEX LESSONS ONLY!

Washington, DC

About Joshua

As an actor, Joshua graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and Judith Blazer’s 2005/2007 company of the Artist’s Crossing.
Performance credits include roles in The Trojan Women, Godspell, Burn This, Comedy of Errors, Children of Eden, Othello, Show Boat, Sunday in the Park with George, The Chosen, Sweeney Todd..., The Laramie Project, and Les Miserables to name a few.
As a director, Joshua directed three sold out productions of Hedwig and the Angry Inch in NC and DC, received rave reviews for his work with Neil
LaBute’s Some Girl(s), and just completed production for a series on the making of Oklahoma!. Other sporadic credits include Duets for the DC Fringe Festival, a number of independent films and countless readings, workshops and concerts.
Joshua has worked as a Musical Director for many shows within the NY/NJ/DC tri-state area and coaches a handful of select students. The musical play, Definition of a Housewife, conceived and written by himself and Jeffery Self had a workshop production in the summer of 2006 at Columbia University.
Most recently he appeared in Arena Stage’s production of Fiddler on the Roof, directed the DC premiere of Madhuri Shekar’s In Love and Warcraft and will next be appearing in Signature Theatre’s production of Soon by Nick Blaemire. He is also attached to a new musical (A House of Glass) about Tennessee Williams in which Joshua will be playing the prolific writer.
Joshua is the Artistic Director of No Rules Theatre Company based out of Washington, DC and Winston-Salem, NC and sits on the board of the Artists Crossing in NY, NY.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that all singing comes from the same place, technically (Opera, Musical Theatre, Pop, etc.). I work more on building a strong foundation from which everything else comes. That includes breath, placement and the stripping away of bad vocal habits that inhibit us from making healthy productive sounds. A strong foundation does usually mean having a stronger sense of your "legit" voice because it takes more work to involve your palate and breath which makes Musical Theatre/Pop seem like a piece of cake. I like to work with dedicated students who are open to challenging themselves and exploring other schools of thought in order to take themselves to the next level.

With my actors, I start from building a foundation of a sense of truth which is inherent in all of us. We talk through/explore a number of "approaches", in order to find the individuals process. From there, we begin work on how to approach text (actions, objectives, targets, meanings, etc.)

**Prospective students should be aware that lessons for speaking voice are geared more toward theatre training, rather than speech therapy. **

*** Studio Equipment ***
A space for lessons with a large library of music/plays. An upright piano.

*** Specialties ***
I only work on a flex schedule with my students, so when booking lessons- rather than selecting a specific day and time for lessons, we schedule each lesson from week to week as we go. I have lots of open hours for teaching, though they are not reflected on my calendar, as my schedule tends to fluctuate.

I have a strong background in musical theatre but believe that it all comes from the same place. Good technique is good technique which stems from more of a "classical" background. Bel canto, if you will. It's like dancing. Dancers who study ballet are much better dancers than those who don't because they have a strong foundation from which to work.

Joshua Morgan is an extroadinary teacher! He knows what he's talking about; very knowledgeable about the business. He gave me tips and pointers of things that I needed to know. He will also tell you the absolute truth because he wants you to succeed, which I love. He expands your mind and helps you be prepared before heading into the industry because its no piece of cake, but he encourages you every step of the way. He also made me feel comfortable and he's very patient. I'm very glad to have met him. Its not the end, but only the beginning with him.

Joshua is great at his craft. I spent a lot of time since I moved to the East Coast looking for an voice coach who understand what my voice needed. Joshua stepped right in and put into words what I have been trying to tell other for a long time. He's truthful and I know I can trust what he say. That was important to me. I want to say you Joshua. I now have something to look forward to.

Monica is an outstanding voice teacher. She customized each lesson, from warm ups to repertoire choices, to fit the age, skill level, vocal strengths, and interests of each singer. Watching her work with high school age students is a joy--she loves what she does and the students respond very well to her. They are enthusiastic about going to their lessons and beaming when the lessons are over. Monica brings her strong vocal pedagogy knowledge, along with her own talent and passion for teaching to the voice lesson. She is a wonderful instructor. Highly recommend!

Besides being a fantastic vocalist, Monica is also a great teacher. She is very creative, patient and calm (no drama), but is still disciplined and persistent. She managed to get basic music theory into my thick skull and help me with sight reading, and did not yell at me when I didn't do my homework! The only downside is that she is so talented and well trained that she makes singing look effortless.

Claire M.

Woodside, NY

I've been teaching in NYC for four years and am also a professional, working soprano in New York. I work with students of all voice types and levels.

The classical technique I teach incorporates consistent breath management and consistent, pure vowels. The combination and synchronization of these allow the singer to access all the resonance necessary for classical singing in a healthy, stress-free way. I also work with students on diction in the operatic languages (French, Italian, German and English) as well as help them understand stylistic differences across the history of classical music.

I teach classical/operatic singing to singers as young as 15, and you're never too old to start singing classically! Try something new with your voice, prepare your audition for that musical or for your college auditions. We will work together to create a free sound that is individual to you in a fun environment.

Can't wait to meet you!

About Claire

I'm a professional singer and a passionate teacher of voice and beginning piano. I have been singing since I was five, and studying voice since age 14, going on to complete a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Voice Performance.
The classical technique I teach gives my students the tools to sing in a variety of styles, whether opera, broadway, pop, or rock.

I also teach beginning piano for both children and adults, as well as ear training and musicianship.

Everyone can make music. Even if you think you can't carry a tune, come learn with me!

Claire has been my daughter's piano teacher for two years and she's excellent!
Her knowledge and patience with kids make the lessons interesting and fun. I can see improvements week after week, not only in music-playing but also in my daughter's confidence. Claire is instilling a passion for music that I hope my daughter will keep forever.

Maria B.

Brooklyn, NY

I've been teaching vocal for over 10 years. Working with students of all levels of experience and all ages. My goal is for my students to feel real results even after the first lesson. With bigger gains being noticed by the end of the first month, including improvement of pitch accuracy, improved tone quality, an increase of their overall range, and even helping students find their own individual sound. I can assist with preparation for any kind of performance/audition, recording process, touring, working on your original repertoire. I also use a special technique to reanimate a student's voice after oversinging (a tired voice) or any after-sickness effects (weak, dull voice, or even no voice at all). Can't wait to meet you and help you to develop your best singing self! :)

About Maria

Hi! I am a conservatory trained singer, violinist, pianist and composer, trained in classical, jazz and popular music at the Kharkov Conservatory in Ukraine and at the Russian Academy of Music in Moscow. I have over 10 years of experience in music education and have worked with students of all levels of experience and all ages. Over these years I've been developing using my own personalized approach to every individual student, as well as a uniquely designed program that gives a student the best opportunity to reach their specific goals, while developing basic music skills and increasing overa
ll creativity and intelligence.
My goal is for my students to feel real results even after just the first lesson. With bigger gains being noticed by the end of the first month, including improvement of pitch accuracy, improved tone quality, an increase of their overall range, and even helping students find their own individual style and manner. I can assist with preparation for any kind of performance/audition, recording process, touring. I also use a special technique to reanimate a student's voice after oversinging (a tired voice) or any after-sickness effects (weak, dull voice, or even no voice at all).
I try to incorporate basic piano and songwriting. Especially in cases where a student wants to also be able to accompany themselves or build their own original music repertoire - this can be one of the most important criteria for students whose goals include being signed by a label. I have worked with many successful recording and performing artists (including Diana Ross's daughter - Rhonda Ross), children of Hollywood celebrities - like Graham King, and students of the Manhattan School of Music.. I will be happy to assist you in achieving your dreams and goals in this exciting music journey!

I also work at a major Brooklyn Recording Studio as a music producer, arranger and composer. I write and record live orchestral instrumentations, program extensive electronic accompaniment in both, Logic and Ableton Live… as well as work as a session musician, recording piano, violin and vocals for various artists.

I have performed internationally at venues all over Europe, North America and South America. I have also recently collaborated with the Grammy award winning composer/pianist Fernando Otero on the album “RITUAL”, on which I was the featured vocalist.

I've been coming to Maria for violin lessons for almost a year and a half and she is the best thing that could ever have happened to me! She is a true musician and a very good coach, with a perfect balance of patience, pushing me to do my best, and working with me to find technique solutions that work best for me specifically. She is also kind and cheerful and an absolute joy to be around, and has worked with me on voice and music theory when I needed that as well. I would never go to anyone else for violin lessons and I highly recommend her.
