Have experience teaching and preparing students for auditions, plays and theatre acting
I have been taking the world by surprise since the age of 4. I began studying at Queens College at 6 years old and was a recital pianist by the age of 12. I was a consumer of music, from the Music Theory lessons on Saturdays, piano lessons on Thursdays and voice lessons on Saturday afternoons, my life was filled with music.
It is to no one's surprise that I completed my first demo at the age of 13 and was performing for Queens Colleges audiences at 14. I went on the rank high in the NYSSMA series in both piano and voice. I also went on to study music in college and began touring with gospe
l troupes nationally. Since then I has done many workshops, Master Classes, tour dates, theatre shows etc. Too many to date. I am a sought after teacher for voice, piano and broadway singing. I train public speakers, actors and teachers as well.
Get your slot NOW! I will take your musicianship and skill to the next level! But you have to be ready!

**Joshua is currently performing in the Broadway company of Les Miserables so is only teaching in person in NY and sometimes in DC.**
As an actor, Joshua graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and Judith Blazer’s 2005/2007 company of the Artist’s Crossing. Performance credits include roles in The Trojan Women, Godspell, Burn This, Comedy of Errors, Children of Eden, Othello, Show Boat, Sunday in the Park with George, The Chosen, Sweeney Todd..., and The Laramie Project to name a few.
As a director, Joshua d
irected three sold out productions of Hedwig and the Angry Inch in NC and DC, received rave reviews for his work with Neil LaBute’s Some Girl(s), and just completed production for a series on the making of Oklahoma!. Other sporadic credits include Duets for the DC Fringe Festival, a number of independent films and countless readings, workshops and concerts. Joshua has worked as a Musical Director for many shows within the NY/NJ/DC tri-state area and coaches a handful of select students. The musical play, Definition of a Housewife, conceived and written by himself and Jeffery Self had a workshop production in the summer of 2006 at Columbia University. Most recently he appeared in Arena Stage’s production of Fiddler on the Roof, directed the DC premiere of Madhuri Shekar’s In Love and Warcraft and will next be appearing in Signature Theatre’s production of Soon by Nick Blaemire. He is also attached to a new musical (A House of Glass) about Tennessee Williams in which Joshua will be playing the prolific writer. Joshua is the Artistic Director of No Rules Theatre Company based out of Washington, DC and Winston-Salem, NC and sits on the board of the Artists Crossing in NY, NY.
*** Lesson Details *** I believe that all singing comes from the same place, technically (Opera, Musical Theatre, Pop, etc.). I work more on building a strong foundation from which everything else comes. That includes breath, placement and the stripping away of bad vocal habits that inhibit us from making healthy productive sounds. A strong foundation does usually mean having a stronger sense of your "legit" voice because it takes more work to involve your palate and breath which makes Musical Theatre/Pop seem like a piece of cake. I like to work with dedicated students who are open to challenging themselves and exploring other schools of thought in order to take themselves to the next level.
With my actors, I start from building a foundation of a sense of truth which is inherent in all of us. We talk through/explore a number of "approaches", in order to find the individuals process. From there, we begin work on how to approach text (actions, objectives, targets, meanings, etc.)
**Prospective students should be aware that lessons for speaking voice are geared more toward theatre training, rather than speech therapy. **
*** Studio Equipment *** A space for lessons with a large library of music/plays. An upright piano.
*** Specialties *** I only work on a flex schedule with my students, so when booking lessons- rather than selecting a specific day and time for lessons, we schedule each lesson from week to week as we go. I have lots of open hours for teaching, though they are not reflected on my calendar, as my schedule tends to fluctuate.
I have a strong background in musical theatre but believe that it all comes from the same place. Good technique is good technique which stems from more of a "classical" background. Bel canto, if you will. It's like dancing. Dancers who study ballet are much better dancers than those who don't because they have a strong foundation from which to work.

He is very detailed in getting to know what makes you what you are and where you come from. There is an established unconditional comfortability and confidence that he brings when talking to about your history and future goals, and unquestionable intrigue of interest that helps him figure out what it is you want out of a lesson, critique, or and experience.
Overall he is very involved in actually helping you developed yourself and your craft towards what ever direction you wish to take it. Highly recommend one of his lessons and experience as a mentor

Joshua is an awesome teacher. He will go out of his way to help you however he can. I have a masters in acting and wanted to find someone that was both knowledgable and encouraging. He is both! He has helped me think about my goals...and have fun. This guy rocks.
That's how I will start every private lesson with the actor.
From there, I will work hand-in-hand with the student to achieve the goals that they seek. I have background in a wide variety of acting techniques and skills ranging from beginning acting to Shakespeare language, contemporary scene work and musical theatre to audition prep. I will let the actor choose their own material or I can work with them to choose the perfect piece of material to show off the best of their abilities.
Just tell me what you need and I will make it happen for you.
I'm a graduate from Shenandoah Conservatory with a BFA in Acting and minor in Vocal Performance and I am here to ask one simple question; How can I help you?

I have known Dave for many years, and have worked within him onstage and off. In addition to being a respectful, down-to-earth person, Dave has a treasure trove of invaluable expertise when it comes to acting and stage performance. As a director, Dave challenged us and brought us to new levels to create our absolute best performance. I am currently a K-12 Certified Theatre Teacher, and I would absolutely recommend Dave to anyone who is looking for an acting coach, teacher, or director.
Stephen July 9, 2015
I was so impressed by the plays that Dave has produced, directed and acted in (not knowing that one of them, he also wrote) that I attended one of his workshops, for the sheer adventure and education of watching him work. I pursue no career in acting, though I am from a show business family; so I know what's good and what goes.
Watching Dave work with actors is refreshing because he is able to do so without seeming condescending but also without appearing a novice, something that can happen when working with someone on the younger side of the business. Dave's ability as a director, teacher or coach does not belie his true age. He has an innate ability to zone in on what any particular actor needs to bring their performance to life and he applies that ability in a friendly manner befitting a safe environment in which one can stretch their wings. He imbues his colleagues with a sense of trust which every artist needs before laying bare their vulnerable artistic senses.
I could not recommend him more, as a teacher of any kind or as a man worth knowing.

Whether it's getting his guidance at his Theatre Co's open workshops, watching him act on stage, seeing shows he has directed or getting one on one coaching, Dave's sensitivity and love for the art stands out and makes working with him a real joy. His ability to see, to feel and to guide an actor to the deeper parts of their own work are what makes him superior at all levels; if your a beginner or a seasoned veteran needing to work on improving your acting "back hand" Dave is the man to go to.

After years of acting training in both Undergraduate and Grad School I thought I was prepped for the professional world. Unbeknownst to me, auditioning is actually a completely different skill than acting. They are related but are in no way the same. You can actually be an incredible actor who is a terrible auditioner. This is where Joe comes in--he's spent countless hours (probably close to Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000) learning the skills it takes to give not just a good, but a great and memorable audition. He can take an audition side that I'm working on and give me a completely unique take on it after seeing the script for a mere 2 minutes. His insight and creativity is uncanny, as is his ability to see holes in my game that I don't even know exist. Truthfully, every time I've had him coach me for an audition (film/TV or Theatre) I have at least gotten a callback. His ability to come up with unique and memorable ideas are enough alone to use him. I know that after he's coached me that I am nothing but prepared for what's to come. I stroll into audition rooms bursting with confidence. I cannot sing his praises enough. I feel bad for stealing his creative ideas--the ideas he comes up with for me--but hey, all the best artists steal! Use Joe!

My 6 year old daughter is pursuing an acting career and has been working on it for 1 year. Choosing Joe was the best find we could have come across!! Olivia won 1st place for her 2 person scene shortly after Joe started coaching her, and 8 weeks later auditioned for the main character of a Hollywood movie and was told by the director that she was "fantastic". He brings something to the table that I would not be without now that I have seen it work for her. He shows up to lessons with an actual camera and lights to imitate an audition and shows her on video how she did and what the camera sees. He is strict enough to keep me happy that progress is being made and that the time is used resourcefully, but is very kid friendly and Olivia loves working with him. He is patient too. I highly recommend him, although we'd like to be stingy with his time and keep him to ourselves!! :) He also brings actual Hollywood scripts for her to learn and work on (sides). He is truly fantastic!!

"I met Marcus while preparing for a callback a few months ago and have met with him regularly every since. His passion for acting is so evident by his thor
ough understanding of both theory and practice. His lessons include technique and blocking, but also studying other works by the playwright and understanding works in the same genre. Marcus truly has a well-rounded teaching approach and cares that his students learn. He has been an invaluable resource!"

Elizabeth's unparalleled enthusiasm for life and acting shines through in her performances and teaching style. S
he shows a strong proficiency in many different styles and on multiple genres.
She's reliable, experienced, professional, and a great lady all around. One of Elizabeth's main strengths is her ability to convey a given subject matter in a way that is meaningful, constructive and easily understood.
I'm also an acting teacher (private lessons and in the classroom) as well as a professional performer. I've found it to be a great pleasure working with Elizabeth and I would strongly recommend her as a teacher and a performer."

"I have had the pleasure of being one of Kelly’s students during my time as an undergraduate in Theatre Arts at the University of Minnesota. In the time th
at I was her student, and beyond that, I have nothing but positive things to say about her as an instructor in both her ability to teach and to relate to her students on a humble and personal level.
My first day with Kelly I could tell instantaneously that she was going to be something unique. And that is because she is perfectly honest about who she is and why she is instructing the material she does. So often, in the collegiate field, I come across professors who are willing to be personable with their students but with their own ends at the forefront of their minds; that is teaching the material as it appears in the book. Kelly operates on a different level - everything she does is to make her students not just learn the material at hand, but to understand, dig into, and critique it. She welcomes the ability to bring any opinion or process to accomplishing a goal in class (which takes an edge off of the need to fit a certain methodology of thought that many other classes lock themselves into). Working with Kelly is like talking to that one friend who you go to in order to share a really exciting idea because you know she will boundlessly support it, push you to realize what your exact goal is and how it works, then make you do it. Having her insight as a student, an artist, or in any form or group-problem solving is invaluable.
To speak further on her personality is beyond words. She is the kind of team member you can only dream of having. She is hard working, committed, light hearted, and understanding. Kelly has a great eye for standing back and seeing a whole picture and pin pointing what goes into it, and what could go into it to make a more realized work (be that artistically or academically). When I was in one of her classes, she worked privately and team-wide with me as we collaborated on the final project for the class, which involved composing and directing a scene that commented upon one of the works that we analyzed during the semester. During this collaborative process Kelly, as the instructor, was focused on understanding what our work was striving toward first before she ever commented on the quality and merits of what we were doing and how we were working. It was after she had met with all of us that she offered her own personal insight into what we could do to make a stronger piece, in a style as far away from a report card or teacher conference where they tell you everything wrong you did and how to make it better, she was telling us everything right we did and offering ways that she saw the piece being stronger.
The inviting energy that Kelly gives off no matter what task she is charged with is something truly electrifying, and her positive attitude is infectious. Any place of education, person looking for tutelage, artist, or co-worker would be remiss to not invite her on board.
It is with the utmost sincerity and pleasure that I recommend Kelly for any position in consideration for her."

"Madison directed me in a play called The Dybbuk last year and had the very difficult job of teaching me to act possessed. I was having trouble inhabiting
the idea of possession physically while also reciting very heightened language in unison with another actor. Madison coached me by allowing me to explore creatively and making adjustments based on what she saw. Her ability to communicate what she wanted while also making sure I was comfortable was really amazing, considering it could have been frustrating for all of us if anyone got impatient. I ended up being very proud of my performance in that play, and without Madison's coaching I don't think I would have been.
During that play she was also able to direct a large cast and overcome many of the obstacles fledgling theatre companies face with good humor and quick thinking. I would recommend her as a teacher and director to anyone."
