When a student reaches a point in their study I refer them to change teachers to and intermediate to advanced instructor to further their education.

About Manda

As a graduate of the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory and Boston University Metropolitan College, Manda has obtained a diverse education in performance and performing arts management. As a clarinetist, Manda has performed in Illinois, Alabama, Ohio, and Massachusettes as a soloist, chamber musician, and in large ensembles. Her performances have been well received for their diverse programming and superior musicianship and technique.

Manda began teaching clarinet and piano in 2008 while she was still in high school. She began with beginning and intermediate musicians and quickly received the op
portunity to coach advanced players at one of Illinois' top high school band programs. While studying in Ohio, she began teaching clarinet and piano at the Joyful Noise Neighborhood Music School. There she continued to have one of the largest studio classes of both instruments for two years. Currently, Manda continues teaching in Boston, MA through Takelessons and Musika as well as through her own personal network.

Outside of her performances and teaching, Manda has held positions as a fundraiser and administrator at the Verb Ballet company in Ohio, the Boston University Tanglewood Institute in Massachusettes, the Brooke Charter Schools in Massachusettes, as well as the New England Historic Genealogical Society. Using her skills learned in these positions, as well as from working with mentor Dr. David Cutler, Manda uses an entrepreneurial and logistical mind set when running Manda's Music. You will be met with a professional atmosphere and efficently run lessons and administration.

*** Lesson Details ***
Students can expect to have their at-home-work as well as practice techniques written out in a journal for their reference every week. We will begin working slowly so the student and I feel comfortable with each other, as well as with the instrument. Each student is different, so there is no timeline that is set to work from. We work at a pace that is comfortable yet continuously challenging for the student. Over all, Manda works to acheive her goal for students to gain an appreciation for music, and look forward to coming to lessons each week.

The lesson spaces include stands, pianos, and chairs.

I will provide pens, pencils, metronome, tuner, and small repair equipment. I expect students to bring their instrument (for clarinet only), assigned music, assignment journal, and specified instrument equipment (i.e. reeds, swab, cork grease, etc).

My seven-year-old's first exposure to instrumental music lessons has been with Manda. My daughter is sometimes easily discouraged when things don't come easily, but Manda is keeping her motivated by being enthusiastic about the music and my daughter's (sometimes slow!) progress. Her relaxed, supportive manner may make a child forget that she is really learning a lot!

My daughter started taking clarinet lessons with Manda last year when she was 9. She is now also taking beginning piano also because Manda's been such a patient and nurturing teacher. She's very calm, proceeds at the student's own pace, and often goes above and beyond what I'd expect her to do. She builds rapport with students and takes an interest in them beyond their music, which I think builds a student's enthusiasm for the lesson.

I started studying classical piano at the age of 6 and continued through high school before going on to study with Robert Shannon at Oberlin Conservatory, where I majored in music history and theory (as well as English and creative writing - I've always had a lot of interests!). I also sang in choirs from a early age, including my high school's Madrigal Singers, the MMEA Northeast District Chorus, and the Oberlin College Choir, a select group which performs regularly with the Cleveland Orchestra. After graduation, I tried out a variety of musical activities, including singing with a semi-profe
ssional a Capella group, None of the Above, and appearing in local community theatre productions. But I finally realized that I'm most comfortable behind a piano, whether playing and conducting for musical theatre, coaching singers, writing music for youth productions, or teaching the next generation of music lovers how to navigate the keys. And while I perform mostly Broadway-style music now, my classical training continues to serve me well; using good technique not only allows me to play more accurately and expressively, it also protects me from injuries that might otherwise arise from long rehearsals and a busy performance schedule.

I'm excited about where my musical journey has taken me, and I look forward to helping you start or continue yours.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm serious about making sure my students learn basic skills, like reading notes and rhythms and learning to interpret music artistically, that will serve them not only as developing pianists but in any future musical endeavors. To that end, I choose method books (such as the Faber Piano Adventures series) and supporting materials that build a strong foundation of musical knowledge, and I help each student construct a practice schedule that's appropriate to his or her level.

However, although I do maintain a certain amount of structure, I am very patient and relaxed in my approach to each individual student. I recognize that not everyone learns at the same speed or in the same way, so as long as I can tell you're putting in the effort, I will also try my hardest to find what works for you! And I know it's easiest to stay motivated when working on music you love, so I like to supplement the regular lesson materials with music of the student's choice, whether that means offering a selection of level-appropriate classical pieces, helping locate an arrangement of a favorite song, or coming up with our own arrangement if a good one doesn't already exist. And while my own background is strongest in classical and Broadway styles, I'm happy to have students work on music from any genre. One of the best parts of teaching is when I get to learn something new as well.

Front room setup for lessons with upright piano, 88-key keyboard, and stereo. Also has laptop available to record lessons. Parents can sit in on lessons, and waiting area for parents. Parking available in driveway and street. Has one cat.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect the student to provide a piano or suitable keyboard (88 keys, weighted keys or at least somewhat touch-sensitive, with a clear piano sound). For vocal students, it would be helpful for them to have a separate music stand as well.

*** Specialties ***
In terms of vocal music, I am definitely most comfortable with Broadway-style repertoire, but I have experience with some of the classical repertoire as well. As a pianist I have a solid classical background but am also very familiar with Broadway playing styles; I think I've done a little of everything at this point, so I could adapt to any interests my students might have. I am trained in the Taubman piano technique, which focuses on healthy, effective motions, so I try to incorporate some elements of that in my teaching, to the extent
that I think a particular student will benefit from it.

As for methods: for beginning and intermediate piano students I tend to use the Faber Piano Adventures series, supplemented by additional exercise books (Dozen a Day, for example), simple classical pieces (Bastien publishes a book that I like), or other materials depending on the student's interest and level of achievement (pop, Broadway, etc.). For advanced students I would use different exercise books (Hanon, Czerny, etc.) and focus more on repertoire than method, continuing to teach theory and technique as it comes up.

For vocal students I have mostly stuck to whatever materials/repertoire the student was most interested in, plus vocal exercises to support any problems or challenges they might be working on (e.g., range, vowel formation, learning a healthy mix/belt technique).

Voice lessons with Bethany were very good for me. She tailored our warm up exercises for my particular needs. She has good advice for breathing and vowel sounds for each piece and general advice for technique to make a piece sound better and be easier to sing. She also plays piano well for accompaniment. I hope to take lessons again with her soon.

*** Lesson Details ***
Within a lesson, students can expect to be given instruction on developing proper technique. (scales, chords, basic music theory etc). The learning environment will be laid back and fun, with the student and teacher setting goals together, and reasonable expectations will be held for both the student and teacher.

Jean will ask what it is in particular that the student is wanting to learn, and will seek to develop curriculum centered around the student's goals. Weekly practice (5 days a week, 20-30 minutes a day) will be the encouraged minimum. This will vary slightly depending on individual student needs.

Students will have the opportunity to learn to play music by composers such as Mozart and Bach. They can also learn how to play movie soundtracks, tunes from their favorite Broadway or Disney songs, and more! Vocal students will have the opportunity to learn show tunes, Italian arias, German songs, praise and worship songs, their favorites from musicals, and more.

All students are required to learn the basics in piano, such as,
the lines, spaces in both clefs, time signatures, note values.
Once the students have mastered the above, they can go on to learn
major and minor scales along with music pieces.
Students play songs that are in the John Thompson book and also

I generally use the Schirmer and Thompson books for piano lessons. I don't consider myself strict but I do expect students to practice at least an hour a day.
3-6 months I do expect them to be able to start playing the piano and to know their notes and their locations.

Ashley has been teaching Voice since upon graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Musical Theatre from Pace University in New York City in 2008. She also is certified by the state of Massachusetts to teach classroom music for grades k-12.

Since graduating in 2008, Ashley has built up a plethora of students throughout the greater Boston area. An avid songwriter and lyricist as well, Ashley continues to perform and write for the live music scene, while teaching and fronting her own tribute band, Rocket Queen, New England’s own female-fronted tribute to Guns N’ Roses, which she built and founded in 2012.

In January 2013, Ashley toured the west coast and attended the infamous NAMM with an original metal/rock band entitled the Mike Kerr Group, for which she sang lead vocals.

Ashley is available to travel to students homes for lessons, or students are welcome to come to her comfortable air conditioned studio which is furnished with a baby grand piano for both Vocal and Piano lessons.

Ashley is most noted for teaching a sustainable and healthy "belting" technique. Her experience in various performance capacities from Opera, Musical Theatre, and Rock, make for a very well rounded music educator.
