Dorothy P.

Hillsborough, NC

About Dorothy

Hello potential student! Let me introduce myself: I am a university-level Spanish and writing coach with 23 years of teaching experience. I earned a BA in Language and Literature at Yale University, a
nd I have taught at Yeshiva University, Columbia University, and the New York College of Medicine. I am currently earning an MFA in creative writing at The University of the South.

I wrote my own book on beginning Spanish grammar for medical students at Einstein College of Medicine, and for many years I was a Spanish language curriculum developer and top teacher at Manhattan's Latin American Workshop language school. I have taught at a number of corporations, including General Motors, Brooklyn Legal Services, IBM and Trinity Investments.

But don't get the idea that I'm too high-falutin' to teach basic Spanish or help the struggling young writer! I enjoy introducing beginner students to my subjects, and I enliven my classes with music, poetry and art. I teach a lot of adults, but I also tutor high school students.
In additional to helping you with your Spanish or Writing skills, I also coach my students in how to practice on their own so that skills get sharper outside of class time as well.

Finally, I am sensitive to the fact that different people have different learning styles, so I adapt my approach for each student.

Have questions? Don't hesitate to write to me. I am also on the Take Lessons app, so if you're in a pickle we can connect that way, too.

After searching in vain for a latin tutor for our son in our neighborhood, we reluctantly turned our search to the internet. We're so glad we did. Jonathan is an excellent latin teacher! He evaluated our son's current ability level in latin and has guided him in lessons designed to address his weak areas. Our son is a good student and will work hard when challenged, but he also needs structure and guidance from his teacher. Jonathan provided both and has inspired him to pursue latin with enthusiasm. We are very grateful to have found such a wonderful tutor, and we would highly recommend Jonathan Hills to any student serious about improving his/her latin skills.

Jonathan is very nice and gives me a head start on the things I need to know. I wanted to study Latin because I want to keep up my Latin from my old school in Louisville. I have made the right choice. He's a great instructor.

I cannot imagine a better Latin teacher. Prior to having Mr. Hills as a teacher my Latin education was a disaster. My previous teacher had wasted an entire year of classes and I had learned nothing. Mr. Hills not only managed to teach the year I had lost, but catch me fully up to speed and get me AP exam ready for my Junior year.

About George

To give you an overall view of my qualifications and experience, I am a native English speaker, being American. I have taught ESL in Moscow for the last f 15 years with a CELTA(Cambridge English Lang
uage Teaching Award). I taught for a branch of IH-London and our teaching standards had to be up to IH-London standards. We had annual observations by a director of studies in our school, which had about 130 teachers. I passed all observations with satisfactory or above. With my vast experience learning several languages(4 years of Latin, 3 years of French, a diploma in Russian, and learning languages such as spanish and German just for fun) I understand language, especially Indoeuropean languages, deeply and understand acquisition of language(the knowledge, thinking, related vocaulary between languages, etc.) very well. In Moscow I had a lot of private students, which is basically tutoring. And I still have 4 private students in Moscow that have skype lessons with me each week.
