Beckie E. North Hollywood, CA

I have been performing on the horn for 15 years now. I graduated from Chapman University in 2010 with my music education and music performance degree on French horn. I love teaching students how to master this beast!

About Beckie

Hi! My name is Beckie and I have played music for all of my life. I play many different instruments such as the Trumpet, French horn and Piano. I graduated from Chapman University in 2010 with 2 degrees in music, Music Education and Music Performance on French horn. I also taught elementary school for 3 years and was a brass coach for a Montessori Academy. I have taught privately for 10 years now and love the one-on-one attention that I can give the students. I currently work for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, I perform with two different orchestras and am in a Brass Ensemble called the Vine Street Brass that performs for events around the city. I look forward to working with your or your child in helping to start or continue a musical instrument! *** Lesson Details *** When I ...

Beckie is wonderful. My 11-year-old daughter has been meeting her online for about 6 lessons now. Beckie is very patient and engaging. My daughter has asked to add on longer lessons. That is a good sign!

Beckie is fabulous - with children, too!

Our 5 year old son has been taking trumpet lessons with Beckie now for 3 months. He has done amazing progress, is eager to practice every day in order to please her, and looks forward to each lesson. Beckie is incredibly encouraging, kind, yet strict enough to keep child's play away from the lesson, and finds ways to make a small child understand the basics of music theory. She balances the lesson nicely between actual playing and theory, never tiring out the student too much with either one. She's reliable, always on time, and communicates very well with both student and parents about any wishes we may have. She makes our son feel special, and he is very sad having to leave her, as we are moving out of the country this summer. His own words being: "Isn't it sad that I'll have to stop my lessons with Beckie, now that we've just gotten started - I really like the way she teaches."
All this to say... we warmly recommend her, and regret having to stop lessons with her. And that we encourage anybody, adult or child wanting to learn the trumpet (or any other instrument Beckie teaches!) to use her services!
John E. Los Angeles, CA

I have been playing horn for 20 years and graduated with my Masters from CalArts where I studied horn with Robin Graham and Daniel Grabois in New York before that. I am equally at home in jazz/rock/pop in addition to Classical playing. Before moving to LA four years ago I toured the east coast playing with NYC band Horse's Mouth and was the Principle Hornist in the Sage City Symphony in Vermont.

Depending on each student's goals/needs, we will focus on Classical horn technique, jazz/pop/rock horn, improvisation, orchestra/chamber/solo repertoire, and/or electronic processing on the horn.

Books used: Standard of Excellence (beginner), Essential Elements (beginner), Yamaha (beginner), Kopprasch (intermediate/advanced), Maxime-Alphonse (advanced), Verne Reynolds (advanced)

About John

I've been playing music for over twenty years as a brass player, pianist, guitarist, composer, and electronic musician. I've studied and performed across the country—starting in Seattle, then New York and the northeast, and finally here in Los Angeles. As a performer, I have trained and play extensively on the French horn, trumpet, trombone, piano, and guitar. I perform in a variety of styles—from classical to jazz and pop/rock styles. As a composer and sound designer, I work in a variety of settings, from composing for orchestra, string quartet, percussion, and groups of all shapes and sizes, to designing sound for theater and film. I earned my Bachelor's degree at Bennington College in Vermont and my Master's degree at CalArts. I play all around LA as a freelance orchestral ...

John is a brilliant composer and instrumentalist. I worked with him extensively while studying at CalArts. His musicianship and knowledge of music theory is in depth, and he is easily able to pass this information on to students. I highly recommend him as a teacher to any level of musician.
Megan W. Los Angeles, CA

As a former all-state french horn player with several full ride scholarship offers, I know what it takes to become an excellent french horn player.

French horn is one of the most difficult brass instruments to play because the partials are so close together (you can play many notes without changing the valve combinations) - it requires good ear training and accuracy in your embouchure to play successfully. I've developed several techniques to train beginning and intermediate french horn players.

French horn is a BEAUTIFUL instrument, let's play together!

About Megan

I grew up in a music store, and learned a love for music at an early age. I started piano at age 3, and just kept adding instruments from there. I majored in music at MidAmerica Nazarene University, where I was on scholarship for Piano, Trumpet and French Horn. I have taught General Music, Beginning Band, and Beginning Orchestra in four LA area private and charter schools, as well as teaching music classes for home-school co-op groups in the Hollywood area. I've been teaching private lessons for nearly 10 years, taking students from ages 4-adult, from beginner to intermediate skill levels. *** Lesson Details *** Music should be fun, and my lessons are geared towards keeping students engaged and excited. I've developed a very out-of-the-box teaching style that takes into account the ...

I can't say enough positive things about Megan. She works with both of my sons, teaching them piano. They have extremely different personality types and learning styles. It is amazing to see her adapt, creating the best learning environment for each of them. She has given them so much more than knowledge of how to play. She has given them a love for creating music.

Megan has been wonderful: Arrives on time, every time, and is super pleasant and most importantly my son is actually starting to play the trumpet! Couldn't have asked for a more talented and punctual teacher!
Melissa S. Los Angeles, CA

With almost 15 years of experience playing horn, as well as a B.A. in music, I'm your ideal teacher whatever your level. Don't be scared by people telling you "French horn is the hardest instrument" - I definitely disagree! You've chosen a brass instrument with a unique, beautiful sound; let me coach you in breathing and accuracy and introduce you to the wonderful world of horn repertoire.

About Melissa

There are plenty of piano, voice and French horn teachers to choose from. What makes me unique is my focus on theory and ear training, no matter what your age, experience level or favorite genre may be. I make it fun to learn these "ins and outs" of music, which means you will not only be able to play beautiful music, but also understand it, talk about it, and even compose or arrange pieces of your own! Whether we work together for a few months or for several years, you will come out of my lessons a stronger and more well-rounded musician. As a long-time private teacher and a teaching credential candidate, I have extensive experience with all ages of students and currently work part-time with special needs students. Please feel free to contact me with any more questions. I look forward

Melissa is a wonderful person and musician. She has extensive knowledge of music and has honed her craft by playing multiple instruments (Piano, Voice, French horn, Trumpet, and more!), studying composition/theory/arranging, and performing in both classical and jazz ensembles. Additionally, she has extensive teaching experience in both private and group settings including work with ESL and special needs students. The combination of Melissa's calm personality, vast music skills, and abundant teaching background makes her an excellent music instructor!
Olivier H. Los Angeles, CA

I studied with Dale Clevenger at Indiana University for my Masters degree and bring the philosophy of musical goals first and foremost. The most important part of playing horn is sound and I will work with you to get the best sound possible.

I've taught horn since I was 15 years old, and have a doctorate in the subject! I've taught students as young as seven through doctoral students at the conservatory level. My goal is to help each student achieve the success level he or she desires. For beginners, we'll focus on embouchure development and air flow. For more advanced students, we'll work on a lot on ear training and accuracy exercises. Most importantly, we'll work on playing beautiful music at all levels!
