Alex M.

Saint Paul, MN

I've been playing guitar for over 12 years & spend most of my professional & personal life doing so. I'm fluent in nearly every style of music in the Western world (as well as some from the East, such as Celtic music, ragas & Japanese traditional music).

About Alex

Hey, my name is Alex. I'm a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, keyboards, voice, drums, flute, etc.), composer, performer, recording artist, arranger/orchestrator/transcriber, recording engineer/producer & music educator.

I graduated from the University of St. Thomas "Cum Laude" in 2011 with a Bachelor's Degree in Guitar Performance, with minors in Music Production & Composition. While attending St. Thomas I served as the Music Theory tutor, as well as the live sound/stage/light/recording technician for student & faculty recitals.

I have been playing professionally & teaching for over
a decade. My passion for music is something that I love to share with anyone else who feels inclined to make music. My goal is to share the skills & knowledge I've acquired throughout my experiences with those willing to learn & dedicate themselves to the craft of making music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am experienced in most major genres of music: classical, jazz, blues, rock, funk, folk, metal, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, instrumental rock, "shred," pop, world music, electronica, etc. & feel comfortable conveying the techniques, approaches & idioms to a student by breaking them down into digestible components, while making these new ideas relatable to material they are already familiar with.

In the end, I want the student to learn what they're most interested in learning. I'm here to answer any questions they may have & with my vast experience, I feel confident that I will be able to either answer these questions or point them in the right direction. Some topics covered:

Scales/modes
Ear training
Guitar-specific techniques (ie bending, tapping, sweep picking, etc.)
Songwriting & Composition
Arranging & Orchestrating
Sight-reading
Improvisation
Chordal theory & how to read charts
Practice routines & approaches
Guitar maintenance
Guitar-based gear (guitars, amplifiers, effects, picks, slides, capos, etc.)

The student will learn at the pace they set for themselves & can only get out of it the amount of time they put into it. I expect my students to practice on a regular basis (however brief each session may be). Consistency is key for progress to be made, & if they hold up their end of the bargain, the payoffs will be quite substantial!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Practice amplifier, tuner, music stand(s), guitar picks & cables.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide guitar neck paper. I expect the students to have their own instrument & any materials they may need to achieve the goals they've set for themselves (such as a weekly notebook).

*** Specialties ***
Progressive rock, classic rock, blues, jazz, funk, disco, classical, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, flamenco guitar; music theory, sight-reading, composition, songwriting, film scoring, music production.

I had a great experience taking guitar lessons from Alex. He was easy to work with and always professional. He can teach pretty much any genre and was able to make music theory understandable to the beginner. Highly recommended.

Rick W.

Minneapolis, MN

I focus on teaching all Popular Music Styles: Riffs, Parts, Changes, and Improvisation. I play guitar in local bands Four Pints Shy, Tuesdays Robot, and formerly, Great Big Dreams/Sunny Wicked.

About Rick

Rick's been teaching Pop Styles Guitar at the Mount Olivet School of Music in South Minneapolis (M-Th) ever since graduating with a degree in Music from the University of Minnesota (T.C. and Duluth Campuses) in 2003. He also teaches traveling lessons to students in the south and southwest metro areas. Rick plays around town in 3 bands and also does the occasional Musical Pit Orchestra and Wedding gig. He also taught at Dayjams Rock Music camp in St. Paul for the five summers of its existence. In his spare time he writes YA Stories and Musicals, as well as running a Songwriting and Music Theory
Blog about Tonal Trends in popular music, and a Guitar Curriculum Blog based on Karate Belts.

*** Lesson Details ***
Depending on student interest, lessons can consist of Ear Training, Improv/Jamming, learning Popular Guitar Riffs/Changes/Parts/Etc., Note Reading, the Music Biz, and learning about all the cool new Music Technologies of the day. Rick also loves to transcribe any and all music the student wants to learn but for which they cannot find the sheet music or internet tab. Rick prefers to teach what the student wants to learn, but if they're not sure what that is, he helps them figure that out.

*** Studio Equipment ***

Alex is incredibly knowledgeable and great with students off every age group! I took lessons from him for five years and my only regrets were not having more time to practice so I could get more out of my lesson times.
During lessons we worked on sight reading, ear training, memorizing chords and scales, different picking and strumming patterns, theory lessons, and anything else that I discovered and wanted to try.

I first met Alex a long time ago when we were attending McNally Smith College of Music. Right off the bat, Alex impressed me with his ability to sightread and his dedication to his instrument. What started as a friendship quickly developed into a study partnership and then a learning opportunity that was of great benefit to me as a guitarist.

Alex spearheaded the forming of a Sight Reading Club and he was it's head instructor. Every week we would get together and work on our chops; very quickly I could see how valuable he was as a teacher and guitar coach. He helped me stick it out during the tough sessions and had the drive to sit patiently as I worked something out in my own time.

I would highly recommend Alex for his patience, persistence, punctuality, and (most importantly) Passion for teaching music. He is a fantastic instructor who I enthusiastically recommend to anyone looking to improve their ability to play the guitar!

Oh and BTW, he's a great blues player - just check out his videos!!!

I alredy submitted one review but I failed to notice the rating stars at the top!!

A;ex is a 5 star instuctor and he has been my instructor for nearly four years. There isn’t a style of music or song that he can’t play. More importantly, there isn’t a style of music or song that he can’t teach. He is flexible, adaptive, patient, and an overall great teacher. I highly recommend Alex for beginner to advanced players and everyone in between

Are you a beginner? Awesome. Let's chat via email about lessons and what it takes to study an instrument such as the guitar.

Do you have prior guitar experience? I've helped students to reconnect with the instrument, discover a wide range of musical styles, compose their own music, and prepare for auditions and performances.

About Brett

Welcome! I have been teaching privately for over 6 years and have helped students young and old learn the art of guitar playing.

I first began taking guitar lessons at the age of 10. In high school, I was a member of the 2010-2011 MN All-State Jazz Ensemble, and
the MN Youth Jazz I Ensemble, performing in Switzerland, France, and the Netherlands. At age 19, I was awarded 1st Place in the McNally Smith Teen Guitar Competition. In 2013, I studied Classical Guitar at Folkwang University in Essen, Germany. In 2014, I studied Gypsy Swing (in the style of Django Reinhardt) in Barcelona for 4 months with Filip Treppesch.

After returning to the US in May of 2014, I joined a Variety-Dance Band which performed in Casinos, Resorts, Hotels, and Bars in Minnesota and Wisconsin. After a one-year-long tenure, and 70+ performances, I left the group to pursue various original projects that are, to this day, performing in a variety of venues in the Twin Cities area.

Wonderful! Brett kept in contact with us several times before our first lesson. My son is completely new to music and guitar. Brett engaged him and excited him. We received a followup email with recommendations for equipment and music lesson books. I love the in home option. We will be continuing for the foreseeable future.

Brett is a fantastic teacher. My husband and my son really enjoy their lessons each week. I enjoy listening to them practice. My son is 8 years old and he taught me a few beginner songs that Brett has taught him (and I know nothing about guitars). It's been fun! THANKS Brett!
