Joe H.

Inver Grove Heights, MN

I've been playing and teaching guitar for about 5 years now and have a tried and true method for getting you to the music you want to make . We can learn licks from your favorite songs or dig into chords so you can play along with your favorite songs and even write your own.

About Joe

I began music in Winona, MN at age 9 with a pair of drumsticks and went on to become a world champion in 2003 with the Blue Stars drum and bugle corps. I do all things percussion and have been playing for 20 years but these days I do a lot more than just drums.

My time spent studying Music Education at the University of North Texas expanded my musical horizons adding piano and guitar among other tools of the trade. The majority of my students these days are piano students young and old but I love teaching a variety of lessons including guitar and ukelele.

I currently teach piano, drums,
and guitar at a local music store in the Twin Cities. I also teach the Hastings drumline in the summer and fall and the Red Wing indoor drumline in the winter time.

On a completely different note, I'm a veteran member of the Twin Cities Terrors all-star men's roller derby team. I travel across the country as Egon Strangler challenging teams on roller skates from Dallas to New York. You can find more info about when I'm skating next at tcterrors.com or just ask me about it. I love to talk about derby.

*** Lesson Details ***
We'll take a focused and fun look at the kind of music you want to play and make that an achievable reality. Whether we'll be playing Ben Folds, Bach, or Bruno we'll work together to find a direct path to making the music that you like.

My goal is to make your experience interesting and understandable. If I send you home with music you can understand that you enjoy playing then I know you'll practice and our time together will be successful. Everyone has that creative spark and I'm just here to help you shine some light on it.

*** Travel Equipment ***
An instrument they can practice on.

*** Specialties ***
I play and teach a method that customizes the experience for each student so they get the most out of their time on their instrument of choice. We can play any song in any genre and most importantly, have fun with it.

I've got two kids (ages 9 and 12) taking guitar and piano lessons with Joe for a couple years. He's been great! He's a gifted instructor who does a great job of meeting my kids at their level and tailoring the instruction style to their needs and personalities.

Joe is a great teacher. He motivates my son to the nth degree. Focuses on music my son is interested in while also expanding his horizons. Drills without discouraging. He is just awesome.

The Good, the Bad, & the Drummy

Joe is knowledgable in percussion and pretty flexible with instruction. He identifies strength areas and assigns appropriate work. He also showed me how to install drum heads and gave me some tricks on care and maintenance of my equipment. Of the three drum teachers I've had, I like Joe the best. I have been playing drums for 3 years and I am 12 years old.

Alex M.

Saint Paul, MN

I've been playing guitar for over 12 years & spend most of my professional & personal life doing so. I'm fluent in nearly every style of music in the Western world (as well as some from the East, such as Celtic music, ragas & Japanese traditional music).

About Alex

Hey, my name is Alex. I'm a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, keyboards, voice, drums, flute, etc.), composer, performer, recording artist, arranger/orchestrator/transcriber, recording engineer/producer & music educator.

I graduated from the University of St. Thomas "Cum Laude" in 2011 with a Bachelor's Degree in Guitar Performance, with minors in Music Production & Composition. While attending St. Thomas I served as the Music Theory tutor, as well as the live sound/stage/light/recording technician for student & faculty recitals.

I have been playing professionally & teaching for over
a decade. My passion for music is something that I love to share with anyone else who feels inclined to make music. My goal is to share the skills & knowledge I've acquired throughout my experiences with those willing to learn & dedicate themselves to the craft of making music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am experienced in most major genres of music: classical, jazz, blues, rock, funk, folk, metal, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, instrumental rock, "shred," pop, world music, electronica, etc. & feel comfortable conveying the techniques, approaches & idioms to a student by breaking them down into digestible components, while making these new ideas relatable to material they are already familiar with.

In the end, I want the student to learn what they're most interested in learning. I'm here to answer any questions they may have & with my vast experience, I feel confident that I will be able to either answer these questions or point them in the right direction. Some topics covered:

Scales/modes
Ear training
Guitar-specific techniques (ie bending, tapping, sweep picking, etc.)
Songwriting & Composition
Arranging & Orchestrating
Sight-reading
Improvisation
Chordal theory & how to read charts
Practice routines & approaches
Guitar maintenance
Guitar-based gear (guitars, amplifiers, effects, picks, slides, capos, etc.)

The student will learn at the pace they set for themselves & can only get out of it the amount of time they put into it. I expect my students to practice on a regular basis (however brief each session may be). Consistency is key for progress to be made, & if they hold up their end of the bargain, the payoffs will be quite substantial!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Practice amplifier, tuner, music stand(s), guitar picks & cables.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide guitar neck paper. I expect the students to have their own instrument & any materials they may need to achieve the goals they've set for themselves (such as a weekly notebook).

*** Specialties ***
Progressive rock, classic rock, blues, jazz, funk, disco, classical, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, flamenco guitar; music theory, sight-reading, composition, songwriting, film scoring, music production.

Eric has done a wonderful job with my teenage son! By offering instruction that met him where he was at and building upon it, he has learned so much. Furthermore, Eric has inspired my son to play to guitar by choosing things to work on that excite him. With Eric, my son is not only developing his guitar skills and abilities, but Eric passion has increased my son's love of playing guitar.

Jessica Y.

My students are a combination of adults who are learning for fun and younger children who are having fun learning! :) I teach note reading and strumming for acoustic guitar, and am happy to teach you the songs that will motivate you to practice most! Additionally, I can give you a good foundation in chart reading and chord vocabulary that will all you to explore the guitar further on your own! I use a variety of method books and supplement with charts of popular songs.

About Jessica

Over the course of my music career, I've worn a lot of different hats including: member of the Board of Admissions for Berklee College of Music, singer/songwriter independently releasing 2 albums of original music, touring artists performing around the country, monthly singer/songwriter series host in both Chicago and Boston, band leader with many different musicians, and music teacher of the internationally acclaimed early childhood program, Music Together, in both Chicago and the Twin Cities.

My music training began when I was a young girl in church choir in Memphis, TN. Since then, I've
had the opportunity to study in a lot of different ways including guitar lessons at the age of 10, classical training on flute throughout high school and a year at UMass Amherst, coursework in ear training, harmony and guitar at Berklee College of music, guitar lessons at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, and Music Education courses at Concordia St. Paul.

All of these experiences have exposed me to a variety of skill levels and forms of musical expression – working with people from infancy through adulthood. I love exposing people to new styles and sounds and helping to make singing and playing guitar an accessible form of expression in daily life.

*** Lesson Details ***
Having spent the last 4 years working with children and families, I have a special place in my heart and a knack for lesson planning for family music. So, if you are a parent hoping to make music with your children, I'm your teacher! And, if you are the parent of a budding musician who's ready to try an instrument, I can help with that, too!

Having spent the last 7 years as a professional singer/songwriter, I have a special place in my heart and a knack for lesson planning for singer/songwriters! So, if you're a budding songwriter looking for gentle feedback or constructive criticism on your songs, I can help! Or, if you're interested in contemporary singer/songwriter music, I can help you expand your repertoire.

I was taught to play guitar and sing at the same time, so I will always encourage that in my students. However, if you are looking for help with basic note or tab reading and want to get some scale patterns in your fingers for soloing, I can get you started on that path as well. I am best suited for work with very beginners (from choosing an instrument and strumming your first chords) to intermediate players (who already know a few chords and are looking to expand their repertoire).

Guitar is a great social instrument in that it is portable, affordable and can easily be incorporated into events like family cookouts, campfires and holiday get together. My goal is to help you make music a regular part of your daily life and I look forward to hearing your goals!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Our studio is a separate room in our house. We have a, keyboard and various percussion and stringed instruments for instruction and gigging that we may occasionally incorporate into lessons. We also have seating for parents.

*** Specialties ***
I have been trained and registered Music Together Teacher for early childhood music education. As a guitarist, I specialize in folk music and songwriting.

Adult Beginner Loving My Lessons!

I picked up the guitar a couple of months ago and have been taking lessons with Jess since I started playing. She tailors the lessons to what I want to learn, so I'm very motivated to practice and play. I picked up the guitar for fun, and Jess has helped make it so enjoyable. As a beginner, I really appreciate her patience and encouragement. She has a really laid back, comfortable style, and I always look forward to my lessons. I've improved a ton taking lessons from her!

Great Guitar Instructor

Jessica teaches our two boys ages 7 and 11 together. They have now had four lessons with her and they look forward to going each week. In a matter of weeks she has them learning songs they love, like Bon Jovi's Living On a Prayer.

She is always prepared for lessons, keeps it fun for the boys and motivates them to keep working by setting good goals and sending them Utube videos to play along with her.

We drive 20 miles to do lessons with her and its worth every mile. She really is the best!

Guitar is my primary instrument and I have been playing it since 2001. I have a wide range of experience when it comes to genres and have studied under many different teachers and played in many different bands. I can teach many different playing styles on both electric and acoustic guitar.

About Aaron

I am extremely passionate about music, and even more so passionate about helping others. To combine the two through providing musical instruction is something I have always enjoyed doing.

I have been playing guitar and drums for over a decade and teaching for about half of that time. I have a Bachelor of Music in Contemporary, Urban, and Pop Music with guitar as my primary instrument and drums as my secondary. I obtained my degree from Columbia College Chicago. While in school, I also spent much of my time studying songwriting and music production. I have played and toured with many differe
nt bands with music from a variety of styles and genres, and have spent vast amounts of time in the studio recording and producing myself and various other artists.

In terms of teaching lessons, I realize that all students have individual ways of learning and have their own goals in mind in relation to their musical ability. I desire to provide lessons that allow students to reach those goals in the most enjoyable and effective way possible.
