Alex M.

Minneapolis, MN

I've been playing guitar for over 12 years & spend most of my professional & personal life doing so. I'm fluent in nearly every style of music in the Western world (as well as some from the East, such as Celtic music, ragas & Japanese traditional music).

About Alex

Hey, my name is Alex. I'm a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, keyboards, voice, drums, flute, etc.), composer, performer, recording artist, arranger/orchestrator/transcriber, recording engineer/producer & music educator.

I graduated from the University of St. Thomas "Cum Laude" in 2011 with a Bachelor's Degree in Guitar Performance, with minors in Music Production & Composition. While attending St. Thomas I served as the Music Theory tutor, as well as the live sound/stage/light/recording technician for student & faculty recitals.

I have been playing professionally & teaching for over
a decade. My passion for music is something that I love to share with anyone else who feels inclined to make music. My goal is to share the skills & knowledge I've acquired throughout my experiences with those willing to learn & dedicate themselves to the craft of making music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am experienced in most major genres of music: classical, jazz, blues, rock, funk, folk, metal, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, instrumental rock, "shred," pop, world music, electronica, etc. & feel comfortable conveying the techniques, approaches & idioms to a student by breaking them down into digestible components, while making these new ideas relatable to material they are already familiar with.

In the end, I want the student to learn what they're most interested in learning. I'm here to answer any questions they may have & with my experiences, I feel confident that I will be able to either answer these questions or point them in the right direction. Some topics covered:

Scales/modes
Ear training
Instrument-specific techniques (ie bending, tapping, sweep picking, etc.)
Songwriting & Composition
Arranging & Orchestrating
Sight-reading
Improvisation
Chordal theory & how to read charts
Practice routines & approaches
Instrument maintenance
Instrument-based gear (guitars, amplifiers, effects, picks, slides, capos, etc.)

The student will learn at the pace they set for themselves & can only get out of it the amount of effort they put forth. I expect my students to practice on a regular basis (however brief each session may be). Consistency is key for progress to be made, & if they hold up their end of the bargain, the payoffs will be quite substantial!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Practice amplifier, tuner, music stand(s), guitar picks & cables.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide guitar neck paper. I expect the students to have their own instrument & any materials they may need to achieve the goals they've set for themselves (such as a weekly notebook).

*** Specialties ***
Progressive rock, classic rock, blues, jazz, funk, disco, classical, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, flamenco guitar; music theory, sight-reading, composition, songwriting, film scoring, music production.

Alex has inspired my son to love playing music for the rest of his life. I can't think of a more wonderful gift. His technique in teaching allowed my son to enjoy learning guitar by playing songs he wanted to play. This made him want to practice just for the fun of it! Alex taught my son from the time he was 9 years old until he was 15. The easy going, positive attitude Alex exudes encouraged my son along his journey and made a strong bond and connection between the two of them. I wholeheartedly encourage anyone who would like to learn to play guitar to sign up for lessons with Alex!

Alex is incredibly knowledgeable and great with students off every age group! I took lessons from him for five years and my only regrets were not having more time to practice so I could get more out of my lesson times.
During lessons we worked on sight reading, ear training, memorizing chords and scales, different picking and strumming patterns, theory lessons, and anything else that I discovered and wanted to try.

Trey K.

Saint Paul, MN

Everyone has a different approach to learning guitar, and I want to help you find your own! Whether you are new to playing or you don't know what to learn next, I can help. Let's talk!

About Trey

I started playing music on the piano at 3 years old. My mom, a piano teacher herself, taught me the fundamentals of music theory and I was fortunate to develop a good ear at an early age. However, when I turned 6 my grandmother bought me a small acoustic guitar, and guitar became my instrument of choice.

For the early part of my childhood, I spent time performing at recitals and traveling in a touring boys choir. In my free time, I would often skip dinner to listen to music in my room and practice to perfect my craft. Once I was in high school, I started playing guitar with bands and during
Sunday church services. I also began writing music and creating electronic music with Ableton Live and Logic Pro.

Over the years I have studied under many different guitarists, including Craig Anderson and Mike Michaels through the Macphail Center for Music. Currently, I have been teaching guitar for almost 2 years, and I play with the Minnesota based band Crank The Thermostat.

Trey is very patient and extremely knowledgeable guitar instructor. I've been playing rythum guitar for many years and decided to finally learn to play lead. Trey really helped me break through the clutter of what is important and to focus on solid techniques. The lessons that I took from Trey really enhanced my ability to play what I want to play, now rythum and some lead. Thank You Trey for guiding me and being patient while I had to re-learn better guitar habits.
