Here is some information on what you can expect if you decide to take lessons with me:

You will start learning songs and play along with them within 3-5 lessons. After 3 months you will have knowledge of the basics. At the 6 month mark you will start to get comfortable with your instrument and after a year you will have built a solid foundation on which you can expand into any musical direction of your choice.

I teach beginner to advanced depending on the instrument, and ages 9 and up are welcome! My customized lessons are based on the student's abilities. Lessons can be held at your home in the vicinity of Mission Viejo. Learn songs and music theory, melodies, harmonizing, rhythm, syncopation, solfege, songwriting, arrangement, reading and writing music notation. I can also help you with singing and recording your songs. If you wish, I can also teach your lessons in German or French.

Music styles: Rock, Pop, Folk, Latin, Jazz, Swing, Reggae, Funk, and much more.

Teaching style: I like to use humor to make the learning experience enjoyable. I adjust to the student's learning speed. My philosophy when it comes to teaching and music: Everyone can learn an instrument and enjoy that knowledge for the rest of their life!

Guitar (for example): Always work with books. Teach simple chords, rhythms and songs at first. Then move to more difficult chords and songs, and TAB reading. Then I keep increasing the level of difficulty as the student progresses. Then start teaching sight reading with standard music notation. When practicing songs, we play along to music. Similar teaching style for other instruments.

Amber C.

Irvine, CA

I always start with warm-up vocalizing. Then, we work on songs, depending on the student and type of voice, and always including music theory, the foundation. Each student is unique; so I customize the lessons and repertoire to suit each student.

About Amber

I am an experienced, enthusiastic music instructor, who started playing piano around 8 years of age and participated in many musical activities. I received my Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Massachusetts, majoring in Music Education (voice and piano). I have appeared around the world as a soloist singing jazz and pop, including the Blue Note, NYC, and appeared as a guest soloist at the 2000 Southern California Summer Special Olympics. I also participated in ensemble groups such as the Masterworks Chorale in NYC, and the Verdi Opera Chorus of Southern California; and curr
ently I volunteer at the Senior Center leading/accompanying the Sing-Alongs.

Inspired by my love of music, I have been teaching piano and voice for over 20 years from NY to LA and now Orange County. In conjunction with my teaching skills, I have excellent communication skills, patience and enthusiasm, and work well with children and all ages. I feel that music is an important part of education, and it aids in the development of cognitive and motor skills. And most of all, it is fun and rewarding, and a skill to last a lifetime!

Patricia S.

Laguna Hills, CA

First you find your voice, then you discover your style.

Finding your voice means learning how to operate it in an efficient and effective way, without affecting it with style from the outside.

First lessons have to do with learning about and coordinating releasing a free tone, breathing, supporting and understanding how your specific voice works.

Second lessons have to do with putting all of that together and expanding on it to produce pleasing and healthy sounds from top to bottom, bottom to the top, and every note in-between.

And, of course, along the way we apply all of that new knowledge, skill and training to songs.

Advanced students keep your technique in good shape, enhance your existing technique and further hone style and presentation.

Performance. Technique. Traditional, conventional training.

Exam and evaluation opportunities for interested school-aged singers. MTAC Certificate of Merit, Royal Conservatory Music Development Program, others.

Patricia is the teacher you need if you are serious about taking your singing to the next level. Her classes are challenging but she is patient. With each of her classes I learn valuable skills and techniques that I will use forever. She is truly a pro at what she does. Plus, she's fun! I couldn't imagine a better vocal coach.

A little over a year ago I decided to take singing lessons. I scoured the internet and Yelp. It became apparent that I should try with Patricia Shanks. From my initial evaluation to the present day I am happy to say I made the right choice. On two counts. One, Patricia is long on substance and understands her craft at the highest possible level. She knows what she's doing. Count two, she blends into her approach a high level of compassion and just plain old down-to-earth care & concern for your best result and happiness and success. She immediately made feel comfortable and "accepted". And genuinely so. I have grown in the abundance of her able guidance. In this day and age of quick fixes and minimal effort it is refreshing to have someone performing her tasks as she does. You will NOT be disappointed. She is, in every sense of the word "Perfect".

Joe S.

Aliso Viejo, CA

I have been singing professionally for almost 18 years now, plus done quite a bit of vocal recording. My experiences range from choirs to bands to a capella singing in a series of different environments. I try to work with each person to explore their strengths, plus increase their discipline.

About Joe

I absolutely love teaching music! After almost 20 years of teaching, performing, writing, and recording in all styles/genres, it continues to be a great adventure. It is a joy to pass this on to others...especially seeing my students that never touched the instrument going on to be very proficient players.

I take teaching seriously, but definitely try to make it enjoyable for the student. I studied classical guitar in college, but was playing everything from Van Halen to Jazz to Country & Blues before that. Currently, I'd consider myself a flat out musical mutt...enjoying anything and e
verything. The love of guitar has also expanded to a multitude of instruments that I record, gig, & teach with.
