Jordan M.

Seattle, WA

Speaking well all starts with proper breath coordination. As a voice major I understand the inner workings of how the voice works, and the proper way in which to speak without strain. Often people speak on a "vocal fry" this is the gargly sound that is very low in the speaking register, not only is this bad for your voice it also doesn't make a good impression to employers or during an interview process or public speaking event. I encourage even my voice students to recognize that habit and break it in order for their singing voices to grow.

If you are interested in improving your public speaking skills, or feel strain when you speak for extended periods of time, it is worth considering taking vocal lessons because without this proper technique severe damage can occur to your voice.

About Jordan

Mezzo-Soprano Jordan M., will be making her Tacoma Opera role debut of Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia in February 2014. In the summer of 2013, she was accepted by Maestro Alberto Zedda for his Accademia Rossiniana program in Pesaro, Italy, and participated in Cincinnati Conservatory’s Realizing Rossini program as Berta in Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Ms. M. is a recent graduate of San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and studies with Mezzo-Soprano Catherine Cook. While at the Conservatory she had the opportunity to sing Dorabella in Cosi Fan Tutte, Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro, Virtu in L
’incoronazione di Poppea, and Beth in Little Women during her undergraduate and graduate studies.

Jordan made her professional debut with Kitsap opera in the role of Suzuki in Madama Butterfly in the Fall of 2011; shortly thereafter she sang the role of Hansel in Hansel and Gretel for a three-month tour for Portland Opera (Oregon). In the summer of 2012 Ms. M.attended Si Parla, si canta, a six week language intensive program in Urbania, Italy where she had the opportunity to study with Meastro Zedda, and Baritone Hakan Hagegard. She also participated in Stephen Stubbs’ baroque program Accademia d’amore where she delved into baroque rhetoric, dance, and collaborated with baroque instruments. In the Spring of 2013 she completed her residency at Tacoma Opera, where she covered Dorabella in Cosi Fan Tutte, Carmen in La Tradegie de Carmen, and performed the role of Annina in La Traviata. Equally at home in Lieder, and recital she was a participant in San Francisco’s Lieder Alive!, with Master teacher Hakan Hagegard, and has given two solo recitals in Seattle, and Tacoma with Second City Chamber Series, and Music Northwest.

Her upcoming engagements include, singing Rosina with Tacoma Opera’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, with Tacoma Opera. Singing as principal soloist with Bremerton Symphony, in February 2014, and Singing the role of Junon in Charpentier’s Acteon with Queen City Musicians sponsored by the Early Music Guild of Seattle, in the spring of 2014.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons begin with stretching, vocal warm ups, scales, and extensive breath work, as well as resolving any tensions that may be hindering your vocal production. I then through collaboration with the student, work on beginning repertoire that is suited for the voice, and challenging at the same time. I record all lessons, and email them to the student so that one has the opportunity to review the warm ups, and hear the improvement in the voice, I also write a review of every lesson, with notated warm-ups and a list of "To Do's" for the week so that the student will have a structured practice week. I provide music, and if needed recordings of the pieces so that the student can take the materials back to their homes and practice them on their own.

I track the range of the voice, and usually within a month it will have improved by at least 4 notes either higher or lower.

For some students learning music is just as much a part of the lesson as learning to sing. I love teaching people of all ages how to read music, so that the student can be an independent teacher for themselves and learn music on their own at home, this I think is very important in order to improve skills for singing, the faster the student can learn music, the more time can be spent working on technique and improving the sound of the voice.

It is important to note that learning voice is a highly individualized journey, each person will have their own set of strengths and weaknesses, as a teacher it is my job to asses this in a person and craft a curriculum, and style that will fit those individual needs.

There is no feeling in the world than the freedom and beauty of singing, it is a joy to hear in my students, and very fulfilling to teach this kind of wonderfully positive experience to people of all ages!

I received my B.A. in vocal performance from San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 2009. I am a classically trained singer, however I enjoy all genre’s of music and firmly believe having a classical base in a singing technique will enrich any style of music you wish to work toward. I am devoted to healthy singing, and unlocking your true timbre and voice with extensive breath, and vowel work. As a graduate from a highly competitive music institution I can help in guiding students along the right path of pursuing this art form at a collegiate level.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a recording device, a piano and keyboard, a music stand, lots of music of all genres, a copier/printer, as well as access to making recordings of pieces so that the student can take it home (whether that is CD's or Mp3's).

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide a recording device, piano, keyboard, piano accompaniment (usually a recording), as well as copies of music.

If I travel to a lesson they would have to have a piano or keyboard.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in unlocking an individuals true singing voice,

Jordan has given me nothing but positive experiences. I came in with enormous apprehensions and insecurities about singing; in only a few lessons, she made me feel comfortable and confident. I noticed remarkable improvements from the very first day. Any time I hit a wall, she knew exactly how to bypass them and keep me encouraged. Most importantly, she is exceptionally flexible and devoted to you as the student. Lessons feel catered to your own development and she is always willing to work with you on scheduling. As well, she is quite amiable and pleasant to work with. I distinctly recommend her to any student of any style.

Holly T.

Seattle, WA

I have worked with actors, court attorneys, and musicians helping to develop and reach full command of students unique voices. I focus on concepts of linguistics and teach IPA to singers wanting to learn foreign language. I also help students to understand vocal control and how it relates to diction, enunciation, and breathing.

About Holly

I am an enthusiastic musician with a talent for teaching. I have worked as a voice and piano teacher in Seattle for eight years. I was employed at The West Side Music Academy for over three years and am currently working on a Bachelors in Music Education at Seattle Pacific University. I am a huge believer in being a lifelong student! I have continued my music education throughout my adult life and have studied Jazz, Opera, Pop, Rock, Reggae, Blues, Soul, and Folk. As a pianist I began individual instruction at age 14, and have studied Jazz with Darius Willrich, Ryan Burns, Dan Kramlich and Mar
k Samson.

I began singing and playing piano at age 5. I have been involved in school and church choirs including The Total Experience Gospel Choir, Seattle Pacific University Women's Choir, and The Spokane Area Children's Chorus. Musical productions include Grease, Once Upon a Mattress, Chicago, and Les Miserables. I have been a featured soloist in ensembles throughout my life. I also performed in the Jazz Ensemble at Seattle Central Community College for three years as a vocalist and pianist.

I have an extensive background as a performer in small and large bands in the Seattle area. I have played in various venues throughout the area including Benaroya Hall, McCall Hall, Tula's Nightclub, and the Nectar Lounge to name a few. I have also worked as a studio musician with various electronic music producers and bands.

I also study and teach West African dance and have traveled to Guinea, Conakry to study dance and music with Les Ballets African a premier African dance ensemble that tours the world. I also spent the summer of 2012 working with a non-profit organization in Chiapas, Mexico teaching music and dance to kids k-12 in the Indigenous Village of Ignacio Allende.

As your teacher I can help you thrive in music. I promise to provide a fun learning experience with lots of laughs and smiles. My number one goal is to help build a love and passion for music and boost student's confidence. I understand and appreciate different levels of experience and make sure to cater the lesson to the individual. Whether my students are young or old; whether they view voice or piano lessons as a just-for-fun hobby; or whether they wish to pursue a serious music career - I am happy to facilitate all of this and more, as we work together to reach their goals.

My musical foundation is one built on proper technique and strong musicianship skills. Students will learn proper posturing, breathing, and vocal production- in addition to reading and music notation, music theory and more. As students master these techniques I will work to help them bring out their own voice and creative expression. We will explore music from a variety of genres including Jazz, Classical, Pop/Rock, and more. Each of my students will be able to perform in ways that are not only healthy and technically sound but unique to them.

*** Studio Equipment ***
In the studio I have an acoustic upright piano, shakers, tambourines, and a library of music books. The studio is also used for dance lessons and has hardwood floors and mirrors. There is also a waiting room area for parents to sit and listen in during lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide books, metronome, and keyboard stand. Students are expected to have a piano or keyboard.

*** Specialties ***

As a student, I take vocal and piano lessons from Holly. I look forward to our lessons each week and I love the kind of flexibility she gives me. I often find myself motivated by her lessons to practice on my own.
She has introduced a lot of new music to me this year--some music which I didn't think I liked!

How to speak clearly with good vocal technique to keep the speaking voice long lasting and healthy

About Serena

Hello! My name is Serena!

Music shapes my life and has made me the person I am today. My experience in training in opera, musical theatre, jazz, and pop has expanded my musical skills and knowledge. Not only have I been trained in performance, but I have also studied music history, music theory, conducting, movement training, ballet, Alexander Technique, acting, yoga, stage craft, improvisation, other languages, diction and the International Phonetic Alphabet, voice science and anatomy, and vocal pedagogy. I have completed my Bachelor of Music in Operatic Vocal Performance from the prestig
ious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University under the tutelage of the legendary Carol Vaness. I have also studied with acclaimed teachers and coaches around the world including Dr. Kari Ragan and Maestro Dean Williamson.

I am very excited to announce that I made my Seattle Opera debut this year singing ALITSA and RACCOON in their touring production of "OUR EARTH", as well as performing on the mainstage in Verdi's NABUCCO. My upcoming performances include singing ALKANDRE in "PENELOPE" with Vespertine Opera in Seattle, WA; FRASQUITA in "Carmen" with OperaBend in Bend, Oregon; and SUSANNA in "LE NOZZE DI FIGARO" with the Seattle Opera Guild. I also made my international debut in December 2014 singing GRETEL in "HANSEL UND GRETEL" with Opera Mariposa in Vancouver, BC. Recent performances include THE QUEEN OF THE NIGHT with Portland Summer Opera's "THE MAGIC FLUTE" by Mozart, a Soloist World Premiere of "In Nocte Plena" by Tommaso Traetta with Ensign Symphony at Benaroya Hall, Seattle, both Adele and Ida in Skagit Opera's production of Johann Strauss's "Die Fledermaus", and both Queen of the Night and First Lady with NOISE's production of "The Magic Flute". I have also been the featured soloist as "Christine" in Ten Grand's Phantom of the Opera at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, WA, and many lead roles in both opera and musical theatre: such as Semele (Semele), Marie (La Fille du Regiment), Gretel (Hansel und Gretel), Countess Ceprano and Gilda (Rigoletto), Blondchen (Die Entfuehrung aus dem Serail), Maria (West Side Story), La Fee (Cendrillon), Sarah Brown (Guys and Dolls), Cathy (The Last 5 Years), Rosina (Barber of Seville), and more! I have also been part of jazz ensembles, and won the Battle of the Bands at Indiana University with a rock group! I am proud to have won the Seattle Opera Guild/Opera Plus Young Artist Scholarship Award for the 2015/2016 season, the Encouragement Award in the Metropolitan Opera National Council District Auditions, First Place in the National Classical Singers Competition, the C.M. Gerber Scholarship, Music Dean's Scholarship, Music Faculty Award, First Place at Washington State Solo and Ensemble Competitions, First Place in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) National Competitions, and many more!

Teaching brings me such joy! To share the love of music and to educate the musicians of tomorrow is both gratifying and inspiring. I have been teaching since 2005 and provide a fun and focused learning experience where there are no "wrong" questions, and everybody's unique voice is celebrated! Many of my students have gone on to study music in college, and have landed lead roles in musical theatre, choir solos, All State and All Northwest choirs, and won awards in Classical competitions.

In my spare time, I like to practice yoga, dance, and have recently taken up aerial silk acrobatics as a hobby!

*** Lesson Details ***
My studio provides musical knowledge through private lessons including healthy vocal technique, basic understanding of music theory, and basic piano skills. I encourage a fun and focused environment. Come ready to learn, and let's make music!

A typical lesson will include vocalises that detail proper technique, some ear training work, some music theory training, and will be followed by repertoire. During this time, students will learn how to produce clear and authentic diction (English and other languages), breath management, phrase shaping, smooth transitions between higher and lower pitches, stylistic ornamentation, as well as dramatic involvement of the piece.

Students will learn the importance of the foundations of breath support, and how to create a healthy sound for any genre while keeping the unique qualities of their own voice-- no cookie-cutter singers here! Students will also learn how to read music, practice effectively, perform authentically, and take care of their delicate instrument for a lifetime of singing!

While Skype is a marvelous tool that has revolutionized the world of teaching, nothing can replicate natural acoustics. In-studio lessons are suggested for a clearer and more personable lesson.
**Skype lessons are reserved for long distance students only**

STUDIO ABSENCE and CANCELLATION POLICIES:
Regularly scheduled and attended lessons are the best way to see positive changes in your voice! The smooth running of the Studio Schedule helps make that happen. Therefore, missing lessons is discouraged and make up lessons/cancellations are not given in the Studio unless:
- I have had a performance or rehearsal that conflicts with our lesson time and cannot have the lesson as scheduled. If this occurs, I will inform you of the event as soon as possible and give you the option of a make up lesson or cancelling the lesson.
- Notices of foreseen cancellations (family vacations, religious holidays, school functions, special occasions etc.) are eligible for rescheduling or cancellation if given before the first lesson of the month.
- Of course, life can throw us for a loop! Illness, emergencies, and unforeseen events may possibly be given make ups or cancellations and will be determined at the Studio's discretion. (In the matter of illness: standard procedure is that if the student can attend work/school, they should come to their lesson. A cold can easily be worked around. If the voice is affected (for singing students), Studio time can still be used to work on ear training, music theory, music history, etc.)

All other absences will result in the lesson being marked as "missed". A hard copy of the Studio Policies and further details will be given to the student at the first lesson. Please feel free to ask any questions or clarifications.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The studio lessons take place in an open, separate room in the front of the apartment. It has a lovely view of the mountains :) The room includes seating for parents to observe lessons as well as a weighted keyboard (88 keys), music stand, desk, and materials. No pets. Lots of street parking is available.

*** Specialties ***
Specialties: Classical/Opera
Other styles and genres: Musical Theatre, Jazz, Pop, and Rock.

John Paul S.

Seattle, WA

While I am not a speech therapist, I can assist you in helping to gain more confidence with speaking.

About John Paul

I have been teaching voice and music lessons for several years now to a wide range and variety of students. I have successfully helped individuals learn how to sing, speak, act, write songs, and play the piano. Some students come to me to build their confidence or skills. Other students come to me just to have a really great time. All my students grow from their experiences learning music with me. I use a variety of methods and it all depends on what you, as a student, are needing from your lessons.

My background is diverse. I have written and recorded dozens of musical albums over the las
t decade. I often perform for music and theater events in Seattle and Washington. I have a bachelor of science in contemporary vocal performance and a master of arts in information and learning technologies (educational psychology and online learning). I am very involved in the theater industry within Seattle and direct productions from time to time.

I work out of my apartment close to Capitol Hill in Seattle, Washington. I can also arrange online lessons. I am, however, not mobile.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you!

John Paul is an amazingly talented artist (performer, writer, teacher, singer, producer, composer, director...the list is seriously too long). We have worked together as professional singers, and I have collaborated with him on an album that he wrote/produced/recorded/edited himself. He is a kind and inspiring person who LOVES music more than anything in the world. I wholeheartedly recommend him to students of all ages who want to find and express their creative voice in the world.

Christopher M.

Seattle, WA

In addition to being a full-time professiinal singer and voice teacher, I previously spent 10 years as a Speech & Debate Coach, sending students to national tournaments, and judging the state finals for Student Congress, Lincoln/Douglas Debate, Cross Examination Debate, and multiple types of speech categories. I have experience speaking before thousands of people, and have been interviewed on local and national television, and local radio.

About Christopher

H, there! My name is Chris, and I love teaching people how to sing! Whether it's brushing up on your karaoke skills or getting ready for the next school contest or professional audition, I'd love to help!

I attended Pacific Lutheran University for Vocal Performance, where I studied voice with Marcia Baldwin of MET Opera fame, and before that with George Peckham - the teacher of Merrilee Rush, and Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. I've had the great privilege of working with such noted professionals as Marvin Hamlisch, Asher Fisch, and Peter Phllpsand with local Jazz legends such as Frank Dem
iero and Phil Matson.

In addition to teaching and singing, I conduct Illumni Men's Chorale (America's Got Talent, Season 6!), and I was the staff Vocal Coach for the Seattle Choral Company, Seattle SeaChordsmen, and the Seattle Men's Chorus - the largest male choir in the world.

I love teaching all styles of music, and while affectations may vary, the basics are all the same. If you're interested in lessons, please say hello!

Just Sing!
