Michael C.

Philadelphia, PA

Using your favorite bass lines, we will explore music theory on the bass. Learn to create your own bass part for songs. Be able to demonstrate proper technique and tonal production on the instrument. Learn musical vocabulary and alternate techniques necessary to perform songs on the bass.

About Michael

Michael C. was eleven years old when he began to play the electric bass guitar. He decided to get an electric bass because it was the one instrument needed to start a band among his friends. In addition to playing the electric bass, Michael enjoyed time practicing on the guitar and piano in high school. Transferring the knowledge and finger technique to the guitar came easy because of the similarities between guitar and the bass. And growing up with an upright piano in the house always lead to tinkering and eventually became a proficiency after college. In 1996 Michael enrolled at the the Phil
adelphia University of the Arts. He was awarded a presidential merit scholarship and a university grant based on his entrance audition. During his studies Michael was recruited for a student ensemble also know as Metagroove. During this time Michael had shared stages with guitarist John Scofield, Singer Ike Willis (Frank Zappa Band), Medeski Martin and Wood and The Disco Biscuits among countless others.

C. has completed a Master of Arts in music education as well as Bachelor of Music in bass performance. Michael is qualified to teach on bass, upright bass, guitar, drums, piano, voice and a rare instrument called steel pan (steel drum) among others. Michael performs as a freelance musician. He can be found performing regularly at private parties and events around the greater Philadelphia area. He has performed playing most styles and genres of music. Among these styles are Pop, R & B, Blues, Hip Hop, Jazz, Calypso, Flamenco, Latin, Pop, Musical Theater and Rock & Roll.

C. is a trained professional and prefers to cater his lessons to the individual need of each student. He believes that each student is unique and will encounter challenges in their own manner. Michael likes to supplement his lessons using musical interests of the student. C. has been known to arrange popular pieces for recital performances for his students. Some of the pieces he has arranged for his students include Something in the Way She Moves (Beetles), Long distance Run Around (The Who), Iron Man (Black Sabbath), That' €™s What Makes You Beautiful (One Direction), Hall of Fame (The Script) among many more. Michael encourages his students to use the music they love to challenge their ability and cognitive processes. Michael has the experience and training required to inspire and motivate you to become successful not only in music but in your daily endeavors.

*** Lesson Details ***
Michael has over twelve years experience teaching music and chooses to cater his lessons to the goals of his clients. He does not follow a set curriculum because different students tend to have different goals and expectations.

Tim W.

Telford, PA

Explore any and all areas of upright bass performance. Jazz, walking bass lines, orchestral playing (I teach both German bow and French bow). Focus on developing strong technique and good intonation, which is the basis of playing for all styles of music.

About Tim

I earned my master’s degree in jazz studies from The University of the Arts. As adjunct professor of music at Lebanon Valley College, I teach double bass, bass guitar, jazz improvisation, and directs small-group jazz combos. Working with students of all ages, I also teach workshops, clinics, and master classes at high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools in Pennsylvania and Maryland, as well as keeping a private teaching studio out of my Bucks County home.

Lessons are available on upright bass, electric bass, improvisation, music theory, and ear training at all ability levels and
all ages, from absolute beginners to high school students preparing for college auditions to adults. Some of my students have been accepted to various regional orchestras and jazz bands, and I'm very proud of their hard work.

While having an outlined curriculum to develop my students’ technique, reading, and knowledge of theory, I cater to their interests by showing them how to apply what the are learning to the music that they already know and love.

My students will learn intonation--time--bow technique--jazz imrovisation--orchestral playing--upright bass is my PRIMARY instrument. I have helped my students pass auditions for select jazz bands and orchestras at the elementary, middle, and high school levels as well as college prep programs and camps. I am a classically trained bassist and my performance career has taken me from renowned jazz clubs in Philadelphia and New York to Amsterdam and Berlin to playing in orchestras at the Kimmel Center and Carnegie Hall.

About Max

I am 23 years old, a Lansdale, PA native now living in Philadelphia who is enjoying a career as a performer, writer, teacher, and student of music. Music is my world.

I have a bachelors degree in Jazz Bass Performance from Temple University, but I have years of experience playing and teaching other styles of music including classical, rock, Latin, blues, etc. While at Temple, I served as the music theory tutor for 2 years and worked with a blind student every week. I am a patient, encouraging teacher and enjoy finding new and creative ways to help my students succeed. Since 2010, I have tau
ght private lessons and tutored a diverse array of students.

My promise to all students: I will pass on the love for and dedication to music that my teachers gave to me. I will always be ready to give 110% percent in my lessons and expect the same from you. Whether you want to be playing stadiums in 6 months or just want to learn your favorite songs, I will tailor lessons to fit YOUR needs and always give the type of supportive, honest feedback that I think you need.

Max is incredibly patient, kind, and knowledgeable. When something doesn't work, he finds different ways of presenting the material. He gave me a lot of effective tools to work through things I'm not very good at. He's just a really good teacher!

Upright Bass is my main instrument. It's what I love and I want to share that love with anyone who wants to play the bass. The lessons are your time as a student. I am here for you and I am here to guide you on the path to success. What I think is really important is always being goal oriented. We will take what you want to do with the bass and plan how we will get there using technique exercises, solo pieces, and fun stuff you choose to learn.

About Michael

I am a professional freelance upright bassist in the Philadelphia Metro Area. I play extensively with the Delaware and Lancaster Symphonies. I have also performed with the Pennsylvania Philharmonic, South Florida Symphony, and NFL Films. In 2011, I went on tour in China with the Philadelphia Camerata. I have been playing upright bass for 8 years now I have a Masters and Bachelors Degree in Performance from Temple University.
I have played electric bass in many cover bands and have been playing electric bass for 13 years. I started on electric and its always been fun for me. I love playing mu
sicals and learning any style of music.
I have done classroom music theory and ear training teaching. It has always been something that comes natural to me and it is very important in growing as a musician.
My goal is to help anybody who wants to learn bass. I want to help people at any level get satisfaction out of learning music and I will help people get on the path to success with music!
