I am a professional Upright Bassist as well, and I have been playing throughout the country for 16 years. I play jazz, rock, pop, singer songwriter, funk, r&b and Latin music. I have experience playing many different situations, including clubs, churches, private events, weddings and recordings.
Since moving to New York City in 2005, John has been one of the most in-demand bassists and teachers in New York. John attended Manhattan School of Music, studying bass with Larry Ridley and Jay Anderson while studying piano and composition with Garry Dial and Richard Sussman.
After graduation, John formed a band called The Jazz Thieves, and has performed his original compositions with them. The Jazz Thieves have played extensively throughout the city at Spike Hill, Rockwood Music Hall, Tea Lounge, Flatiron Room, and the Greenpoint Gallery to name a few. Their first self-titled album was
signed to Fervor Records. They have been featured on radio programs throughout the world, and continue to perform in NYC often.
As a teacher, John has taught piano, guitar and bass to students privately, as well as at Pelham Music Arts Studio in Pelham NY, Dea School of Music and Art in Staten Island, and New Canaan Music in New Canaan, CT. John has also worked at the Caedmon School and St. Hilda's and St. Hugh's schools, helping to produce their fall and spring concerts. John works with students to improve their musical skills, teaching them both important works from the past, and modern, popular songs. John's hopes to inspire confidence in the student's musical and life skills with his teaching method.
John also plays in many other projects. John has played jazz with jazz masters James Moody, John McNeil, and Wayne Bergeron. He also had played with with Jason Trachtenburg (of the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players) and currently plays with Tim Cronin (of Camera Obscura/Freelance Whales/Los Campesinos) in his band Floating Compass, at venues such as the Bowery Ballroom, Mercury Lounge, and Glasslands Gallery.
*** Lesson Details *** I enjoy working with each student to help them improve their musical skills and gain confidence. I like to focus on fundamentals, including music theory, proper instrument technique and reading written music. Music is supposed to be enjoyable, so I try to work with each student to find songs they like and help them learn the melody, chords, and theory behind their favorite songs.

Tom really knows his way around a bass. Each time I go for a lesson, i leave happy about the things we've accomplished in the lesson. Anything that i would like to learn Tom makes it possible for me to do so. I started getting lessons in order to not slow down on my playing. With my schedule constantly changing Tom has been very nice at accommodating when possible.

As an adult learner, coming at this late in life, Stephanie has been the perfect instructor for me. First of all, I just love the way she talks about the instrument. It was kind of mesmerizing - at our first lesson, she picked up the old beat up guitar I had inherited from my father and accurately guessed it's origin based on the sound; "a lovely dry tone". She allowed me to choose the direction I wanted to go in and never made me feel like the rank beginner that I was. She challenges you while at the same time appreciating the depth of a simple strum. I'm learning to read music because of Stephanie! Not because she insisted, just because I thought I'd like to try. This is thrilling to me. In 10 years of teaching the bass, I've guided students from their first encounter with the instrument through professional performance and college study. I love teaching the bass because playing the bass ties together so many fundamental elements of music in every genre.
I have a degree in Jazz Performance on the double bass from NYU and have performed professionally in many styles from jazz to classical, rock, soul, funk, merengue, and everything in between. *** Lesson Details *** As a teacher, I am committed to helping my students achieve their goals whatever they may be. I find as much satisfaction out of teaching a guitarist how to play the latest Green Day song as I do preparing a student for performing a Beethoven piano sonata for concert or competition.
I have found that students tend to fall into two categories, though some share characteristics from each. The first kind of student comes to me with a specific goal in mind; to learn a song, a technique, or a musical style. For this student, I am goal oriented and let the student dictate where the lessons go. If the student doesn't have any interest in reading music, that's fine! I work for you, not the other way around.
The second kind of student doesn't know exactly where to begin, but has an enthusiasm for music, or perhaps their parents want to include music in their general education. For this student I take more initiative in designing curriculum to include the classical masters, reading proficiency, theoretical understanding of how music works, and practice techniques and strategies. I am always goal oriented and maintain practical, short term goals in addition to a long term road map.
Over the years I have had students of all ability, talent, and age levels. I believe that knowledge of and experience with music is valuable for everyone, and as a teacher I know my job is to find an efficient and engaging way to connect my students with the material. Some young students benefit from longer concentrated periods of time on the instrument, while others require a different approach. I have developed many physical games that provide a break from time on the instrument while constantly reinforcing the material we have worked on. This is invaluable with many young students, as attention spans vary from pupil to pupil. For instance, my younger students love to play musical twister, a variation on twister in which I set out different colored tape in five lines to reflect the treble or bass clef staff and work the student through a program of memorizing the letters for each line and space. For the youngest students unfamiliar with the alphabet I have pneumonic keys to facilitate reading notation before they can read words! The key is to keep every lesson full of information, and full of fun.
For young piano students, I use the Alfred's Basic Piano Library books, as they have fun illustrations and a balanced approach to reading notes and rhythms, theory, and technique. For older students, I use several method books but also focus on supplemental material of my own design.
Upright bass students will study out of Simandl, with a large body of supplemental material as well.
