Cory P.

Pittsburgh, PA

I've been playing guitar for over twenty years. Most of my teaching comes from my experience as a professional upright bass player. I start my beginning students in the Hal Leonard guitar method books. These books provide a solid foundation and walk through a lot of concepts at a good pace.

About Cory

I grew up around Atlanta, GA and started playing piano when I was around 7 years old and bass and guitar when I was 11. Most of my education has been on the upright bass. I've studied classical bass performance at major music schools on the east coast and in the midwest. I've studied and worked with musicians from many of the great orchestras around the world.

I enjoy working with students who are just coming to the bass, guitar, or piano for the first time and getting them started with music in a rewarding way as well as more advanced students that need finer musical direction or auditi
on coaching.

*** Lesson Details ***
I try to keep a relaxed environment while still being motivating and inspiring. I tailor lessons around what the individual student's goals are. There are materials that I like to use with most students but I'm open to using anything that meets the needs and desires of the student.

I try to find a nice balance of technique work and music. It's important to develop healthy technique from the very beginning. It's very easy to develop bad habits that can have serious health risks down the road (i.e. tendonitis, carpal tunnel, back pain, etc.) that can make it difficult if not impossible to keep playing. I've spent many years undoing bad habits that I developed from the first years that I played bass without any formal instruction. Yoga, Alexander technique, massage, and many great teachers have helped me overcome the issues I had and have helped me develop healthy habits. I try to pass this education on to my students so that they can have an enjoyable and healthy experience with music for the rest of their lives.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano and music stand. Living room with seating for parents.

The students need to provide their own bass and bow or guitar and music.

*** Specialties ***
Classical. I have studied with members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, and New York Philharmonic and my teaching and playing reflect the traditions of these teachers and orchestras.

Steven H.

Pittsburgh, PA

Beginning students can expect to learn the basics of the instrument and how to handle it. It is very important to play without hurting yourself. They will also learn how to start coordinating their hands to pick and fret together in a manner that produces the most accurate pitch and tone possible. We will also cover the basics of chords and chord progressions.

Intermediate and advanced students will learn about different playing styles and techniques, as well as develop a solid repertoire.

An instrument is required for this subject.

About Steven

Hey, my name is Steve! I teach guitar (acoustic, classical, and electric) and bass guitar. I have been teaching guitar for about 8 years now, and have loved every second of it. Whether you want to simply learn how to play chords on an acoustic guitar or shred on an electric guitar, I can help you make that happen. I attended Duquesne University for classical guitar and audio engineering for undergraduate and classical guitar performance for graduate school, and have not stopped learning even after leaving school. My goal is to help you become the best musician that you can be, while still
having fun and enjoying the process. I look forward to helping you reach your goals!

I went into banjo lessons not knowing if I could master the instrument or not, being nearly 70 years old. While by no means a master (and never going to be), I have learned so much from Sam and he has shown such patience with me. I often leave my lessons wondering how he ever puts up with me - but he does. His encourgement, laid-back style, expertise and knowledge of music (plus theory) and the banjo is impressive. His good nature makes my lessons so much more pleasant. I would say Sam is a a great teacher for both a beginner or an accomplished musician or in between. He likes to talk and demonstrate (nice and slowly if requested) so I would recommend hour-long lessons at first.

Sam was wonderful with my daughter. He took the time to show her around his studio and explained some of the instruments to her. He even let her play a few. That helped her relax a bit and enjoy her first lesson.

Rick C.

Coraopolis, PA

I like to cater to each students goals whether they just want to learn songs, or get really involved in all aspects of the guitar. I focus on 4 areas: Scales Chords Theory and Fingerboard Knowledge (this requires reading music but is the underlying area to total understanding of the instrument, knowing the fretboard allows players to use their knowledge of the other areas) and also I love to do plenty of songs some of which I choose and others the student may request. Also do live rock group

I took lessons from Rick for about 6 years and I learned everything I needed to know. Probably the best and most thorough instructor around. He'll teach you the guitar inside and out and actually teaches you theory and how to apply it to the guitar, which made me want to take theory classes at my own high school. If you're looking for solid guitar lessons at a reasonable price, Rick is the man to go to!

Rick is the best instructor ever! He has taught me so much about playing the bass guitar in the time that I have taken lessons from him. He has even given me and some of his other pupils the experience of playing in front of a live audience! I highly recommend him.

Aaron W.

Pittsburgh, PA

In addition to chords, scales and arpeggios, I can show you how to apply music theory on songs you'd like to learn.

About Aaron

I'm a Pittsburgh native who currently plays with a flamenco group and networks with different musicians in the area. I enjoy many genres of music, including jazz. I've studied under Erik Lawrence since 2012. I would like to give lessons. I'm interested in teaching more than just sight-reading and repertoire. I would like to give students a clear perspective on the underlying principles of modern music in order to help them create and improvise their own personal material. Students will know how and how not to practice. I will do my best to offer them the tools they need to perform in va
rious musical situations. Most of all, I look forward to sharing my love of music.

I'm an international student and I took my first lesson with Aaron. He was very good teaching me with the consideration of that English is not my first language! I picked up quickly the frets and the string number names! He gave homework to do at home!! You won't regret it if you shose him. Aaron was very patient with me especially with my broken English and my poor background about music. Good luck everyone!

Play Thousands of Songs Using these Guitar Chord Progressions
If you've spent much time on YouTube, you're probably familiar with the Axis of Awesome. For the uninitiated, the Axis of Awesome performs snippets of almost 50 songs in under 6 minutes using the same 4 chord progression. The video is super fun, and it creatively shows off an open secret that professional musicians have known about for decades. Essentially, most popular songs are based on just a handful of guitar chord progressions. Sometimes the chords are modified (adding a 7th or 9th for e
The Little-Known Difficulties Of Playing 'Beginner' Guitars

Find out in this guest post by Austin, TX teacher Samuel B...   Recently some of my beginner students have requested shopping tips for more advanced models of guitars. Though my familiarity with standard models for various genres is considerable, I don't train aspiring musicians to master one specific genre. She's smaller than her guitar, but she sure knows how to make it sound big and mighty. Plus, the sweet grin she gives the camera as she's bending a note around 1:46? Priceless! Child prodigies like Lisa are absolutely amazing, but there's really no wrong age to star
