Zach R.

Pittsburgh, PA

Hi there! I'm so glad that you are interested in taking guitar lessons! Let me tell you a little bit about how I teach. To quote a good friend of mine, "teachers teach the way they were taught".

I was taught to understand music first, and then apply it to the guitar. I was taught that patience, diligence, and intentionality are key to learning an instrument. I was taught to be open to all forms of music, and to diversify is important to being a well-rounded musician.

About Zach

I am a freelance music professional, located in Pittsburgh, PA. I am classically trained, and hold a Master's of Music in classical guitar from Carnegie Mellon University. I have several years of experience performing various styles music including jazz, pop, rock, blues, country, contemporary, acoustic, and classical. I have been teaching for 12 years, and have taught independently, in local music stores, and at the university level. I have also owned my own project recording studio for the last 6 years, and worked with many local artists.

I went into banjo lessons not knowing if I could master the instrument or not, being nearly 70 years old. While by no means a master (and never going to be), I have learned so much from Sam and he has shown such patience with me. I often leave my lessons wondering how he ever puts up with me - but he does. His encourgement, laid-back style, expertise and knowledge of music (plus theory) and the banjo is impressive. His good nature makes my lessons so much more pleasant. I would say Sam is a a great teacher for both a beginner or an accomplished musician or in between. He likes to talk and demonstrate (nice and slowly if requested) so I would recommend hour-long lessons at first.

I like to cater to each students goals whether they just want to learn songs, or get really involved in all aspects of the guitar. I focus on 4 areas: Scales Chords Theory and Fingerboard Knowledge (this requires reading music but is the underlying area to total understanding of the instrument, knowing the fretboard allows players to use their knowledge of the other areas) and also I love to do plenty of songs some of which I choose and others the student may request. Also do live rock group

I took lessons from Rick for about 6 years and I learned everything I needed to know. Probably the best and most thorough instructor around. He'll teach you the guitar inside and out and actually teaches you theory and how to apply it to the guitar, which made me want to take theory classes at my own high school. If you're looking for solid guitar lessons at a reasonable price, Rick is the man to go to!

Rick is the best instructor ever! He has taught me so much about playing the bass guitar in the time that I have taken lessons from him. He has even given me and some of his other pupils the experience of playing in front of a live audience! I highly recommend him.

Johnny W.

Pittsburgh, PA

Playing the guitar is a meaningful and rewarding life endeavor. The process of learning any instrument should be enjoyable and a break from the stresses of reality, rather than a chore. I focus on creating a comfortable atmosphere while gearing lessons towards long-term development.

About Johnny

First, I am a student of music. I am currently studying Jazz guitar under the infamous Joe Negri (actor "Handyman Negri" and music composer for Mr. Rogers) and Classical guitar with James Ferla and Irvine Kauffman. I also study Voice with Richard Teaster (director of University of Pittsburgh's Men's Glee Club). This fall, I won the University of Pittsburgh's Battle of the Bands with an acoustic set and was rewarded with opening up for Pitt's Annual Fall Fest.

Also, I have strong understanding of psychology and learning in general. I pride myself on creating a comfortable atmosphere for stud
ents, which is the starting point in learning. I have taught as the Lead Coordinator at an after-school academy in Pittsburgh. I have a Secret Security Clearance with the Army National Guard and updated Child Abuse Clearances.

I'd love to be apart of your child's musical adventure. I know mine has been an incredible ride.
