We explore the fundamentals of music theory including sight reading, ear training, rhythmic and melodic dictation. Through this work, students begin to understand the language of music and utilize it in practice with voice and/or piano
My goal is to produce a literate musician out of my student; able to understand, read, write, analyze, and compose music.
Ear training is a big part of music theory class. Students are taught to hear and recognize pitches, intervals, and chords. Solfege (do-re-mi), a traditional method of naming pitches, tied to "fixed do" is being used for ear-training. Students learn scales, key signatures, basics of harmony, and rhythm. They also learn conducting patterns and play rhythm ensembles. Students in intermediate and advanced classes learn counterpoint. All theory concepts and skills are demonstrated on the piano, and basic piano literacy is also introduced in class.
Lessons are highly structured and flexible to student interest. Expectations for practice and technique are consistent and clear, so as to catalyze student growth and productivity. Practice materials and curriculum are catered to individual needs and interest, focusing on the minimization of practice time through objective and effective strategies. Lessons can be recorded.
I teach some music theory as part of the ongoing lessons to almost all students but I encourage those who are interested to study the subject more thoroughly. I use the book 'GETTING MUSIC' which I co-authored (published in 2014) as the textbook for theory study as it provides a strong grounding and understanding of notation, scale construction, interval construction, chord construction and an overview of basic harmony principles and practices.
Music theory is not meant to be merely theoretical! I teach theory in such a way that it become immediately applicable and accessible to the music you are playing or singing. I myself LOVE theory and hope to inspire the same in my students.
