Lyric Baritone, Orlando S., holds graduate and undergraduate degrees from the Peabody Conservatory and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, respectively. Orlando serves as the Director of Music and Chancel Choir conductor at Hunt's Memorial United Methodist Church which was founded in 1773 during the advent of our nationâs history.
In addition to his work as a conductor, Orlando is also a highly-respected and sought studio teacher of voice and piano. He maintains an active voice and piano studio in the Baltimore area having successfully taught hundreds of students. Orlando holds
memberships with the National Association for Music Education (MENC), the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and teaches students in five different locations.
Orlando is a versatile artist with performance experience in opera, chamber music, art song, oratorio, musical theater, pop and jazz. He has completed concerts with the Municipal Opera Company of Baltimore, UMBC Camerata, Vocal Arts and New Music Ensembles including performances of works by W.A. Mozart, G.F Handel, Beethoven, Herbert Brun, Christian Wolff, Verdi, Donizetti and John Rutter at venues including Carnegie Hall, the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and the Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore among others.
He currently lives in the Baltimore suburbs with his wife, violinist, Meg Mizumoto and their two dogs, Dice and Billie.
*** Lesson Details *** It's been my experience that an austere and tense environment causes austere and tense singing which is the exact opposite of what we're trying to accomplish together.
Voice and piano lessons are a partnership between the singer and the teacher: we both have a part in you or your child's progress and success. Singing and playing both require a positive attitude, a willingness to try new things and adequate preparation. That's what I hope to see from my students when they enter the studio and I will give the same energy and preparation in return.
After a few months in the studio, you or your child can expect to have a better understanding of how the voice works and tools and techniques employed by myself and the professionals responsible for my education and technique.
Furthermore, piano is fun! Singing is fun! Otherwise, we wouldn't do it...without getting paid for it at least, right? I have many individualistic goals planned for each lesson, but generally if you've had a good time, found some energy and learned something about either music or yourself, we've had a successful lesson. Everything else is a bonus for me. My students' experiences with me speak volumes and their successes in music and otherwise even moreso.
My three promises to you as a student:
1) I guarantee that you will have fun during the time you're with me! I know lessons can be intimidating and stressful, but they have to be fun and that's part of my job.
2) I promise that I will never ask you to do something that will harm your voice.
3) I stand behind my education and experiences: I've learned music from the best in the field and you will get nothing less than that from me during a lesson.
My three expectations of you:
1) Come willing to try new and different things in a low pressure environment. I don't bite...I swear.
2) Come prepared to sing and/or play. Why? If you want to sing or play piano, you have to sing or play. Relatively simple, right?
3) Come prepared to make mistakes because no performance is perfect by any standard. No lesson is perfect either and no lesson should be. Lessons are your opportunity to make mistakes without being judged, so make mistakes, commit to not making the same ones the next time and enjoy and appreciate the praise and feedback you get along the way. Singing is a journey that cannot be completed in a few one hour sessions, so I hope and expect that you won't treat it that way.

This teacher has an easy, fun loving spirit. I have learned important tips to improve my singing, such as, to name a few, where to place my tongue, the importance of enunciation, and scaling from high to low notes without breaking. I would recommend him as a teacher.
My speciality is opera, this is my great passion. I perform in operas in DC regularly with Opera Camerata and Riverbend Opera. I focus on teaching healthy vocal technique which will free the voice so that you can explore a variety of operatic roles and styles.

She also created the role of Lust in The Blue Opera, and starred in that role for its world premiere. Recently she has been seen as the Bloodied Child in Riverbend Opera's MacBeth, and as Charlotte in A Little Night Music with DTC.
Jennifer has also served as music director for several productions, including Alice in Wonderland with Damascus Creative Stage, Sweeney Todd, The Mikado, Les Miserables, Into the Woods, and The Gondoliers with Montgomery Blair High School, a musical production of A Midsummer Night's Dream with DTC Kids, and Schoolhouse Rock Live Jr. and Disney’s Cinderella Jr with Ballet Petite.
Jennifer also has strong ties to the community and has served as the Co-Conductor of the Kentlands Children’s, Teen, Glee and Adult Choirs, in Gaithersburg, MD. She was also a board member of the Damascus Theatre Company in Maryland.

Helped me find my passion
In middle school, I really didn't have very much direction and I was afraid of going to high school. To make friends, I decided to go out for one of the high school's audition choirs, and though I didn't make it into the elite choir, I made the women's choir. I was happy, but I was afraid to sing out even in front of the other girls in the choir. I didn't have any confidence in my voice and most of them knew how to read music and sight-sing. I didn't. I started taking lessons with Ms. Jenni in the fall of my freshman year in the hopes of catching up with the other girls and eventually auditioning into the elite choir before my senior year.
That was three years ago. I now read music and sight sing and have much more confidence in my voice. I made the elite choir at my school in the spring of my sophomore year-- and in my junior year we performed at the White House! Jenni has encouraged me to participate in competitions and summer music programs that have helped me grow even more. I am seriously considering majoring in music in college after I graduate in 2014.
Jenni has been such a wonderful teacher. She really "gets me" and her encouragement has helped me find my passion. She's always positive and helpful and treats each student like they are her only one. I just love her and I will miss her when I go to college--because without her I really don't know where I would have ended up.

I really appreciated the way Jenni made me feel welcome and comfortable through her outgoing attitude and encouragement. She also made a point to relate to me on a personal level which was very important to me as well and contributed to my comfortability and progress. I definitely plan on taking lessons from her again in the future!
My specialty is in classical voice technique, whether that be for opera or art song. My formal training encompasses over 13 years.
*** Lesson Details *** NOTE: I prefer to teach students ages 11 & up. I will accommodate younger students, but as vocal development is a direct reflection of physical development (the instrument is the body), we will be unable to delve deeply into technique. Instead, the curriculum for younger students will include musicianship and piano skills; they will be more of music lessons that incorporate singing rather than "vocal" lessons. My current studio consists of all sorts of singers including classical, musical theater, R&B, and pop. In classical voice lessons, we will be learning songs n
ot only in English, but also Italian, German, and French. Classical voice lessons may not be for everyone, however, and we will learn repertoire that suits the interests of each student.
I emphasize a basic knowledge of music theory, because it's important for a singer to not only know how to sing, but to also understand the music he or she is singing. I will incorporate music theory into the lessons, starting with basics such as learning how to read notes.
I believe in making sure the singer is comfortable and confident. The environment you will be learning in is open and non-threatening because a singer needs a place to explore his or her voice. I encourage my students to make mistakes and to keep the lines of communication as open as possible. Singers are perfectionists, and we're constantly telling ourselves what we do wrong- we don't need someone else enforcing that negativity.
I concentrate on a classical vocal technique, with proper posture, efficient breathing, lack of facial and body tension, and healthy vocal production. I believe that it is important to have a strong foundation of healthy technique no matter what style of singing. My teaching style and lesson focus will be different for each individual person, and I'm very flexible in adapting to each singer's needs and personality.
I am a very understanding teacher, and very patient, but I will push you to work to your potential! What you put into these lessons and your practicing is what you will get out of it. I am not strict, but I do expect dedication, passion, and respect. I am a very enthusiastic and energetic teacher, and lessons with me will be fun, productive, and encouraging.

A native of Charlotte, NC, Zachary began his musical career as a tuba player and jazz bass guitarist. While attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Zachary began singing in various vocal groups on campus and developed his love for the singing voice. With encouragement from the music faculty, Zachary began training as an operatic baritone while at UNC. While attending UNC, Zachary was awarded both the Fischer Scholarship in Voice and the Tony McDowell Voice Scholarship. His singing brought him to Boston in the summer of 2010 to begin study at The Boston Conservatory. While performing various opera roles and attending summer programs, Zachary also opened his private studio and taught at a local music academy. He will sing the role of Marcello in The Boston Conservatory's production of La Boheme in April 2013, as well as a February opera scenes program which will include Cosi fan tutte and The Pearl Fishers. Baritone Zachary B. is quickly establishing himself as an active operatic performer. Equally at home on the recital stage, his versatile lyric baritone voice fits a wide range of repertoire and styles. A graduate of The Boston Conservatory, Zachary has performed roles like the titular role in Don Giovanni (2012), Ramiro in L'Heure Espagnole (2012), L'horloge comtoise in L'Enfant et les sortileges (2012), Pooh-Bah in The Mikado (2011), and Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief (2011). Most recently, Zachary performed Character #7 in the ensemble chamber opera Transformations (Conrad Susa).
Starting in February 2013, Zachary will also be available through TakeLessons for online instruction. Lessons will still focus on energy, breath, and solid technique, so please contact him if you think this venue of instruction will be a good fit!

This means that my work with you will, by nature, be incredibly personal and always formulated for your specific musical goals. I will constantly strive to make sure you are comfortable in our work together as we explore singing, speaking, and music theory.
I believe every singing or speaking voice can benefit from a foundation in classical vocal technique. Whether you prefer to learn through singing songs or through various exercises, I can customize our lesson plan to fit your needs. Therefore, I provide a fun and engaging lesson atmosphere, but you need to bring your best as well! We will both be happier with the process if we are equally invested in your growth. We will start with something you already know (an aria, vocal exercise, or excerpt from a song) and work toward singing in your preferred vocal style. For example, classical singers will build their knowledge of English, German, Italian, and French diction and song styles. Additionally, I will always respect and include my student's musical interests.
Along the way, I am happy to address basic music theory ideas. If you prefer, we can also spend additional time reviewing and learning those principles to enrich your musical experience. I will always provide different exercises and ideas to keep your brain active in the singing process.

As a performer, I employ a variety of holistic exercises and theories to develop my own voice, such as basic Alexander Technique principles, voice therapy techniques, a variety of pedagogical palates, and energy work. 60 minutes: $65 Weekly 60-minute lessons will improve your musical ability fast. This is for the committed singer, regardless of experience, and the best way to gain the full musical lesson experience.
45 minutes: $55 The 30-minute lesson goes by fast, which is why the 45-minute option is great for someone who wants more experience, but less out of the pocketbook. This is also a good option for students around the ages of 15-18.
30 minutes: $45 Although the 30-minute lesson goes by quickly, it is full of information and improvement. This is a great option for younger students, or people with busy lifestyles.
