Gregory H.

Astoria, NY

The key to this instrument is its simplicity! Learn to have unlimited technique to play any style.

About Gregory

As a younger brother at the age of five, I began studying the piano because my older sister did. After my foundation in music strengthened I fell in love with the trumpet. At first, each note took time to develop and I enjoyed the challenge. The trumpet allowed me to travel all over the Southeast later in life and even to China with a 1940's Radio Show. I enjoyed many top-level bands the kindled my love and passion for good music. I want to share that kindling with my students in a nurturing and guiding situation, just like my teachers gave me. I used to go to lessons and become so motivated and inspired that I thought I could change the world. I always knew that I would want to give back exactly that. As my performance opportunities grew into venues like Churchill ...

These classes are for my granddaughter, Victoria (7). Gregory has been amazing. He's patient and a great teacher. Victoria has learned so much already. I am glad that I am able to provide this experience for her. Gregory has inspired her to work harder and practice everyday. It makes her happy.

My son has been taking piano lessons for 4 years and I have never seen him more enthusiastic about piano until now. Matt has a wonderful way with kids and is in tune with what my son's interests and actually pursues them. My son now bops when he practices and not just slumps down by the keyboard. I am also pleased to see that Matt is not just asking my son to play the songs, but to really connect with them starting with rhythm. I can't wait to see how my grows as a musician!

Before working with Matt I'd played guitar for about ten years. With Matt's instruction, I've been able to work on not just fundamental skills, but also understanding more complex music theory and developing more advanced playing technique. I've made a ton of progress in a very short time, and have really enjoyed it. As a bonus, Matt has been super flexible with my somewhat unpredictable schedule. I highly recommend working with him.

Anthony H.

Long Island City, NY

How exciting is the sound of the Trumpet?! Throughout history, Trumpets have been playing rousing tunes announcing Kings and Queens. Some of the first Trumpets were found in King Tut's tomb date from about 1500 BC!
I have been playing the Trumpet since grade school. Like all brass instruments, the trumpet's sound starts with the player's lips buzzing together into a mouthpiece.
Levels: Beginner to Intermediate

About Anthony

My life revolves around music in all of its forms. I have studied piano since the age of 6 while singing ever since I knew how to make sound. Throughout my lifetime, I have been taught by some of the most influential teachers, and it is my goal to become one in your lifetime. I began participating in theater at an early age. Once In high school, I had my first job as a Drama Teacher at Saltworks Young Actors Studio where I taught Improvisation, Monologues and Musical Theater to students ages 6 through 16. I went to Point Park University where I received a BA in Musical Theater in 2006. Throughout College, I was also teaching voice and piano lessons. As an actor, I have enjoyed many successes. In 2007, I joined the NY Public Theater’s three night, 40th anniversary ...

Bobby S.

Brooklyn, NY

Trumpet is a powerful and versatile instrument used in many styles of music throughout the globe. In addition to covering the technical requirements of the instrument, I'm particularly interested in the many musical contexts in which the trumpet is used, and I try to focus on styles of music that most interest and challenge my students. I have been playing trumpet for more than 18 years, and I teach my students valuable brass exercises based on lessons I learned under the tutelage of John McNeil, Laurie Frink, and Walter White. I encourage the use of long tones, air support, and trumpet calisthenics to improve tone, increase range and endurance, and work towards greater flexibility.

About Bobby

I am a jazz trumpeter, improviser, and composer as well as an avid listener and enthusiastic educator. I maintain an active performance schedule playing improvised music as well as funk, soul, afro-beat, reggae, hip-hop, and American folk music. In addition to trumpet, I have experience performing and recording on slide trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, and french horn. I write and arrange music for my own groups and regularly write and record horn arrangements for folk, pop, and reggae groups. I have attended Berklee College of Music and Ithaca College, and I have a Master's degree in jazz trumpet performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. I have over nine years of experience working with students ages 7 to adult. I have worked both from my home studio and ...

My jazz instructor in High School led me to Bobby three years ago. He taught me a lot of things about playing the trumpet and greatly increased my ability as a trumpet player. He is very, and inspired me to want to get better at playing through encouragement and his high quality playing. Every lesson is very personal and fun. I know that sounds cheesy, but I looked forward to every lesson I had with Bobby. Bobby is a very skilled player, and unlike many great players, he can teach just as well as he can play. Bobby and I also spent a lot of time talking about Jazz theory. I am now fairly knowledgeable about theory, one of the best in my school, and I learned it all from Bobby. If you take lessons with Bobby your trumpet skills will vastly improve, and if you want to learn jazz, Bobby teaches jazz theory as well as he teaches trumpet, if not better. The last thing I have to say is something that Bobby told me at our very first lesson, "we will both learn from each other, you will learn trumpet and jazz skills, and I will learn how to effectively teach you." Every lesson with Bobby is extremely personal, and he is constantly improving his already great teaching skills.

I took lessons with Bobby for several years throughout middle school and high school and he was by far the best trumpet teacher I've ever had. He is an extremely devoted and hardworking individual and is very passionate about his teachings and music.
He always had a solid lesson plan each week, teaching me technical skills along with improvisation and music theory. What stood out most was his animated and enthusiastic personality, which made me look forward to lessons each week. He taught using a very Socratic method, guiding me along much of the complications of music theory and allowed me to gain my own understanding of musical concepts.

Bobby was easy to communicate with and very willing to help expand my playing in whatever interest I had at the time. I highly recommend lessons with him.

The purpose of my lessons are to be a template for every time you practice the Trumpet. The first 5 minutes of every lesson will consist of different breathing exercises, because the most important part of playing the trumpet is goo airflow. We will then work on different scales and exercises to work on technique and range, before playing some duets, to work on intonation and harmony, to improve your ability to play with a group and to sound good on your own.

About Matthew

I have been playing the trumpet for 13 years, attended Mark Twain for the gifted and talented for middle school, got into Laguardia high school for Trumpet and Viola, and graduated Skidmore College with a B.A. in Music in 2014. I was a total beginner, but Matt was really great. Within my first lesson, I was already feeling pretty comfortable. Matt is really patient and doesn't mind going over things more than once. He is an amazing trumpet player and he was just as skilled in his teaching methods. With all of his experience training under different teachers and professors, Matt knows a lot of different ways to teach things, so if you just can't figure something out, Matt will try alternate methods until you get it. I definitely recommend him!

Matt is an excellent Trumpet teacher. Through our first 3 months of lessons, I was able to increase my range from only being able to hit a high A to high D, and am now able to play 16 measures phrases without taking a breath. He challenges me to practice and be better for every lesson.
I highly recommend him as your music instructor!
