Marissa R.

Sunnyside, NY

I will help you select and prepare a monologue so that it is audition ready.

About Marissa

I am a professional vocalist with a broad range of experience. With a Bachelor of Music (Musical Theater) from Belmont University I am more than qualified to teach with a well supported vocal foundation.

As a true lover of music and arts, I encourage my students to sing as much as possible! My confident and exciting approach to singing brings out the best in my students, which translates beautifully to real life situations.

*** Lesson Details ***
Each person is different in nature and each performer has a personal style and goal. My goal is to get to know what kind of voice and style e
ach student desires, and base the curriculum off of that knowledge.

A basic lesson looks like this:
5 minutes of breathing exercises
10-25 minutes of vocal technique exercises (e.g. scales)
15-30 minutes of repertoire (song) work (practical application of exercises)

The time and efforts put in to voice lessons depends on the student's desire to learn and accomplish goals. There will be recitals for those students who are ready and wish to participate, or can be a goal to work toward for students who don't yet feel comfortable singing in front of an audience.

A beginner, within 12 lessons, will be able to successfully and proficiently sing through at least two songs of their choice, and will have a deeper understanding of his/her voice and music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room studio, piano, room for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students must have a piano or keyboard, and must buy the music (through me or on their own) that they wish to keep.

There is no equipment, aside from the books I bring in and take home, that I will provide.

*** Specialties ***
I am a very well rounded singer and teacher. My training started in classical voice, before I moved on to jazz, pop and musical theater styles, and I teach all styles.

The basics of singing are the same for all genres of music. Scales and exercises and proper breath support, along with a basic knowledge of music theory, are essential in becoming an accomplished singer. I can help you!

Matt's really a terrific teacher, he's making sure my voice is as healthy as possible and he is working it so that my falsetto is as strong as my lower register. No other teacher has worked with me on that before and Matt makes sure I know exactly what's going on with my vocal cords when we work on that. Matt is also great because he's given me a lot of material I'm not familiar with for my audition book, which is a huge help for me. I'm incredibly glad that I started taking lessons with Matt!

Monica earned her BFA in Drama from the Experimental Theatre Wing and MA in Educational Theatre at NYU and has taught in Thailand, Greece, India, Australia, trained in Amsterdam, at the Grotowski Center in Poland and finished her Masters at Trinity College in Dublin. Monica  H. teaches Physical Storytelling and performs in NY and across the world with her own shows. She has performed with LesFreresCorbusier, International WOW, Scott Lyons and Co. and The Living Theatre. Monica is also a dedicated activist working with Time’s-Up!, Occupy The Pipeline, Rev. Billy and The Church of Stop Shopping, Occupy Wall Street and bicycle dance troupe- NYBikeDance. Monica’s creative direct action techniques within the OWS movement have been featured in the documentary film, “Everyday Rebellion” by the Riahi Brothers. Take a class with her! Lessons are very physical explorations where actors have the chance to break out of old habits and try new things, to work in a free and safe environment.

*** Lesson Details ***
Get in your body! Free yourself up to become a more flexible, aware and impulsive actor.

The class will utilize various physical theater techniques including Viewpoints, Grotowski’s plastiques and corporals, improvisation, clowning, Linklater vocal techniques, dance and my own brand of developing solo material to explore the world of the participants' stories, monologues and other materials. We will approach each piece physically, finding the specifics, emotion, story, characters and action within our bodies and rely on the genius of impulse to set free new discoveries. Participants will examine how playing with physical forms, experimenting with time and space and exhausting your usual acting safety’s can reveal the truth and inner life of the story that celebrate your individuality and unique choices. How you tell this story/ monologue is different than how anyone else can tell it. We will create a safe environment in which to take risks and break out of old patterns, clichés and stereotypes.

Testimonials from Students:
"Monica is a wonderful teacher. She creates an open and trusting environment. In the one day workshop I attended, I thought the day was structured very well with a perfect balance of exercises that were achievable and challenging and an afternoon of opportunities to expore the craft of storytelling."
- Claudia Barrie
(participant in Horse's Mouth Theater Festival Workshop in Sydney, Australia)

"I saw and experienced first hand that the body & imagery work that Monica does so well truly does work and is very effective. She created a safe environment where I was able to physically manifest all of my wildest dreams. No matter how badly my day is going, her class lifts me up. Monica has fire, passion, an extraordinary sense of play, a wonderful sense of humor, and beautiful insight to teach and inspire all of us."
-Ben Curtis

"I had a really amazing time. It was important for me as an out of work actor to remind myself how important it is to always keep moving. Keeping yourself fit is very important in our line of work but also keeping up physical exploration. I benefited mostly from realizing how much information and material is stored in our physical body and how it can lay dormant unless your discipline yourself to let it out to play. play with yourself more often and art will flow. Thank You Monica."
- Jessika D. Williams

"Monica's Physical Storytelling workshop is a blast! She'll make you sweat and feel and explore and ponder. If you give yourself to the work, you'll discover varieties of personal subjectivity, that will astonish and help create compelling theater."
-Peter Haywood

A great way to gain confidence and sharpen your physical theatre skills!

Monica creates a safe, inviting space that allows participants to keep an open heart and take risks! Monica gave me a better understanding of Grotowski methods and the purpose of the tools we learned. I loved the way she incorporated viewpoints into the workshop. I gained a better understanding of how I can use my body as a means to communicate story and emotion. The class was physically challenging in the best way possible. I learned some great vocal warm-ups and even some great forward and side rolls (which I never thought I could do!) I left feeling revitalized and inspired to create new work and breathe some life into my current work.

A born teacher

Monica is a born teacher just as she is a born actor. (It's hardly inevitable for one to also be the other.) I was skeptical at first, but I found the exercise liberating. I've never been so out of breath! However, Monica understood and accepted my limits, which is cool, and she relates to her students emotionally, which is better than cool. Her method for teaching actors is not the only viable method or even necessarily the best, but she makes it work for her.

I took Monica's physical storytelling class. I really enjoyed the different kinds of exercises she gave us to do. They were fun and could be useful for creating new material.

Jeremy K.

Brooklyn, NY

I have been teaching and coaching actors for 20 years. My students work professionally on stage, TV and film. Within the first few lessons, you will understand how to create a character. Soon, you will have the skills to book a role. I specialize in method acting, but draw upon my experience at The Second City (improvisation) in Chicago and other training I have had. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels; I can't wait to meet you!

About Jeremy

Are you working on a part for a play or film and need assistance? If you are new to acting, I can teach you what it takes to be an actor and how to bring a character to life. Do you need prepare for an audition? Do you want to learn about the business of acting? Script analysis? I can help.

If you have training or are a working actor, I can help take you to the next level.

I am a working actor, published playwright and award wining filmmaker. I graduated from the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where I majored in drama. Currently, I am fa
culty member at Lee Strasberg Theater Institute in New York. I teach Method Acting, Acting for Camera, Improvisation as well as other classes. My students, both at the Institute and from private coaching, have appeared in independent stage and film productions, TV shows, commercials and Hollywood films.

Acting is the art of bringing a character to life. I use the Lee Strasberg Method, my original exercises and a fun and serious demeanor to help actors express themselves as artists and gain the confidence and skills they need in order to book acting jobs.

Film and TV Acting · In studio
Jeremy Kruse is a working actor and an excellent coach who showed me how fun and rewarding a career in film and television could be. Being a student of Jeremy's for almost two whole years, I looked to him as both a mentor and a friend. He taught everything from breaking down a script to being typecast for a role; even going as far to recreate the physical conditions of an audition space. Since departing from the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, he's been supportive of my own endeavors as a rising actor, both putting me in touch with a voiceover coach and encouraging me to take up improv at the Upright Citizens Brigade. I began working with Jeremy my first year of highschool and have witnessed firsthand how well his contagious enthusiasm and cultivated professionalism influences his pupils, no matter their age or level of experience. Now four years later, I can say with confidence that were it not for Jeremy Kruse and my class with him every Saturday for 80 weeks, I wouldn't be as devoted as I am today to pursuing acting as a career.

I was one of Jeremy's acting students at Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute last year, and i can say honestly he was and still remains my favorite acting teachers i have ever had. He is so incredibly talented himself and passionate about acting and it makes the student even more passionate. He took time to personally help each student and didn't just address us as a whole. His class is fun and very very helpful! He also teaches you about some of the business and tips for auditioning, its not just acting, he is amazing and i miss his class always:)!He also took headshots for my class which I've gotten parts with!:) Everyone take his class!

I have taken Jeremy's Acting in Front of the Camera class and have loved every second of it. He is a very experienced and professional coach, but also very fun and easy going, which makes for a great acting coach. He has a lot of insight in the business and taught me all the technical aspects of acting for film and TV, but also focused on the most important part, getting into character and really understanding the scene. Jeremy is a great teacher and I loved being in his class.

Introduction to Voice Acting: Books & Resources to Check Out
When it comes to the performing arts, voice acting attracts some of the most fiercely dedicated enthusiasts, despite the relative anonymity compared to acting on stage or on screen. In the old days, radio dramas were the most common inspiration for aspiring voice actors. Today, it’s animation. The key component of voice acting, even more than secrecy and seclusion, is versatility. An in-demand voice actor may be called upon to provide the pipes for a cartoon rabbit in a kid's show on Friday, a
Top 5 Wildest Method Acting Techniques in Hollywood History
If you've ever watched an actor disappear into their role, shedding genuine tears or adopting mannerisms that aren't their own, then you've seen method acting techniques in action. Most people think of this approach as "becoming a character," and some actors do take that literally, pretending to actually be the person they're playing.  Method acting is taught everywhere from Hollywood to Broadway.
