About Heather

Hi, future students. Thanks for checking out my profile! I am a classically trained singer and will share with you the best techniques and exercises available to help you sing comfortably and freely, and more importantly, to have fun! I have two Masters Degrees, one of from the New England Conservatory and have taught voice for over 16 years. My teaching environment is safe, supportive and geared to helping you learn complete breathing, proper placement of the voice, ear training and dramatic interpretation. I continue to train and perform myself so I am always learning new things to bring
to our lessons and keep sessions fresh.

*** Lesson Details ***
We'll start off with basic exercises in complete breathing, proper placement of the voice, ear training and dramatic interpretation to lay a solid foundation for your vocal technique. The last part of our session will apply concepts we learned in the exercise portion to actual music that you are interested in learning and performing. After several months, your range will begin to increase, you'll be able to learn music faster and more precisely, your singing will be more comfortable and you'll be able to develop your dramatic interpretations of the songs.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano in private studio with mirror and wood surfaces.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I do not provide equipment. Student would need to provide sheet music that they would like to work on. Also recommended is a recording device to record your lessons.

*** Specialties ***
The main focus is on healthy and expressive singing so you can feel confident on a stage or church choir or singing for friends in your home. These lessons are about singing more easily, having fun and feeling empowered! This foundation will pave the way for you to sing anywhere: in music theater, cabaret, opera and other genres of singing.

A Great Teacher!

Heather is first and foremost an amazing teacher!
I came to her as a complete novice at 28 years old. The sound I was producing most people were trying to avoid best they could. My closest would actually just tell me to stop.
After a quick assessment Heather recognized all my problem areas and with a smile pointed out what was positive.
She then proceeded with fun exercises, starting from breathing and on to ear training. She was building me up "block after block" into an educated musician. I could feel myself progress.
She made me hear the difference!

Now not even short 6 months later I am, though still learning, enjoying my music with my friends and family.
Heather is very personable, incredibly perceptive, and her knowledge is very well-rounded. She is somebody that approaches her craft with integrity and is always researching new training material.
Thank you so much!

Justin P.

Jersey City, NJ

Classical and Operatic singing are the pillars of good vocal technique. From my own personal experience, I've learned any voice can benefit from learning Operatic music.

About Justin

Justin P is a vocal coach, singer, performer & educator based out of Jersey City, NJ.

During his high school years Justin discovered his passion for music and education. Kenneth Brown, his former choral teacher and mentor, recognized Justin’s untapped potential. He taught him the fundamentals of choral conducting, vocal technique, music theory, ear training and repertoire selection. Justin was a member of the award winning Edison High School Choirs, NJ All State Choir and the NJ Region II Chorus.

Justin has spent 11 years studying under some of the best vocal coaches in New York and New
Jersey, including Sarah BachmanKrieger (Manhattan School of Music, The Juilliard School), Steven Schnurman (The Juilliard School) & Katherine Wessinger (University of Michigan). He currently studies under Melissa Perry (Westminster Choir College, Temple, and post graduate work included 750 hours with Maestro Vittorio Rosetta of La Scala) While doing studies at Westminster Choir College, he studied with Tenor Eric Rieger (Eastman School of Music).

While attending Middlesex County College, Justin founded and directed The A Cappella Choir of Middlesex County. After a wonderfully successful first year and a full length album, The A Cappella Choir sang at Carnegie Hall for the premiere of Eric Whitacre’s electronic opera “Paradise Lost: Shadows and Wings”
Justin was the head of the choral department at the New Dover United Methodist Church in Edison, NJ. He directed & musically directed a production of The Rocky Horror Show at the Villagers Theater in Somerset, which subsequently moved to The Den Nightclub and ran for 5 consecutive months.

Justin has organized, directed and performed in two fundraisers for the Edison high school Choral program, the program that first honed his raw talent and a place that to this day he still can call a home.

As a performer, Justin was seen as a backup singer in the Bryan Hansen band. He has participated in community theater all over NJ and is frequently hired for studio session work. He recently contributed backing vocals for Mike Wells’ upcoming third studio album.

Justin has been teaching privately since 2007 (Justin Pollinger Vocal Studio). His Students have been accepted to some of the top music programs in the country including Westminster Choir College, Boston Conservatory, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Oberlin Conservatory, Mason Gross School School of the Arts, The Hart School & AMDA.

“Justin is so much fun to work with and always makes me feel good about performing, even when I get discouraged. He has helped me to discover a side of my voice that I didn't even know I had.”
- Debbie Lingel

“For the last 5 years, I've experienced pain and major vocal fatigue, which lead me to stop singing almost completely… After just a few weeks, I noticed a vast difference. I found Justin to be very knowledgeable, easy to work with and free with encouragement and honesty. It was refreshing to find a young vocal coach like him; I would highly recommend him to anyone: young, old, experienced or beginner.”
- Toni Dalessandro

“Working with Justin allowed me to improve upon things in a short time that for years I had tried to correct myself. I always left lessons feeling like I’d learned or become stronger in some area. He is patient when mistakes are made and creative in finding solutions. It was a pleasure to be his student.”

I went to Rutgers: Mason Gross School of the Arts for Vocal Performance as a freshman in Fall 2008; by the Spring of 2009, I was no longer a music student. Singing quickly became a laborious activity instead of an enjoyable past time; I felt as if I became incapable of adequately expressing myself because I was bogged down by a pretentious atmosphere and a teacher who lacked any sort of gravitational pull. Justin is the complete opposite.

I started studying with Justin in September 2013. He's so incredibly realistic. He lacks any form of pretense and his personality is so magnetic. Every time I walk into my lesson, I'm ready to go. He creates an atmosphere that is just so easy to adjust to, and he listens. I'm so grateful to have found him. In a little less than a year, he's helped me restore confidence in my vocal ability and gain back years of lost discipline in such a short time. He will hold you accountable without alienating you and for me that's invaluable. If you're looking for someone warm, but disciplined, Justin is your guy.

Working with Justin has helped me make enormous strides musically! Our lessons have transformed my voice, prepared me for the competitive world of singing, and given me the confidence and knowledge needed to succeed. In just one or two lessons I progressed in ways I never thought I could and opened up to different techniques that I did not even know existed. Justin is fun and easy to work with. His encouragement and spirit will push you to reach new heights and truly refine your vocal technique.

Working with Justin has given me utmost confidence in my singing. He has taught me invaluable vocal techniques that previous coaches never taught me. Since I started with Justin, I feel that my voice has become stronger and it still continues to grow! I would recommend Justin to anyone for vocal instruction. Great, effective lessons for a cheap price!

Laurie G.

Jersey City, NJ

I am confident in my ability to teach beginners through advanced singers as I have actively taught private voice lessons for over 30 years.

About Laurie

I bring 30 years performing and coaching experience to my students.  I have performed as featured soloist at events ranging from Miss Texas Pageant and cruise ships to guest artist with several symphony orchestras. I have enjoyed singing with the Fort worth and Dallas operas as well as traveling with national Broadway touring shows.. I obtained my Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of North Texas and have studied with former Metropolitan Opera stars and Maestro for the Dallas Opera.

Each student is different, therefore I adjust my teaching technique accordingly. I want all o
f my students to be successful, so we begin where this can happen and then work up from there. I am classically trained and believe that a classical basis should be the foundation for all styles of singing.

Many of my students have always scored top in contests, and some have merited full scholarships to prestigious university's opera programs. I've even had two former students selected for reality television singing competitions.

I will be moving to Jersey City mid October when I plan on starting voice lessons there. I look forward to meeting you and moving forward as we find and develop your best voice.

I had taken voice lessons from Laurie for seven years before I moved away for college. During that time, my vocal ability grew in ways I could not have imagined.

Laurie has an amazing ability in helping you reach your greatest potential. She is intuitive, perceptive, and meticulous in discovering your weaknesses and helping you overcome them. Like an athletic trainer, she has an intricate knowledge of the muscles required for your performance, and she is excellent in helping you strengthen them.

Being a performer herself, Laurie is constantly evolving and honing her craft, which in turn is very beneficial for her students. Throughout my time with Laurie, she was always excited to share a new technique if she found it successful.

However, Laurie is not only an amazing teacher, she is also a wonderful person to be around. I always loved coming to her lessons, not only because I learned so much, but also because she became a great friend.

Hi I am Evana Flores. I am Soprano 2, soon to be 18, and a senior at Coppell Highschool where I am in the A Cappella Choir and a few show choirs. Laurie and I have known each other for many years now. I started taking group class lessons with her when I was in the fourth grade for musical theatre, and then soon after began taking solo lessons for fun. She was super friendly and she is great with children and taught me good songs for auditions, how to breathe with my diaphragm, and most importantly confidence. I was in a Musical Theatre company and she was one of the directors where she was able to adapt and teach a bunch of voices from kids of varying ages. Going into middle school I signed up for school choir in 7th grade and they allowed us to take Voice at school, so I only saw Laurie sporadically. It wasn't until the summer before my junior year of high school that I sought out Laurie’s help once again. I was kind of in the rut vocally and with my confidence level because I was good, but I wasn’t improving… specifically with the All State Competition. I was doing well for my age, but I wasn’t advancing as far as I had wanted to and it was frustrating. Transitioning from a 30-minute weekly school lesson to Mrs. Lauries 1 hour+ lessons was kind of overwhelming at first because these lessons were so concentrated on technique. But by the end of that summer I had already learned how to project my sound and raise my soft pallet.
If that is not convincing enough, let me tell you how I did in my standings in the All State Process before and after her lessons. My freshman year I made the district choir (17th chair) and did not advance to the Region choir at the next round because I got 31st chair; I had to make top ten. The next year as a sophomore I made 11th chair at district and made 15th chair at the next round of Regionals so I was cut once again. That summer I went to Mrs. Laurie, and after having lessons for only a few months with her I was a million times better and I think my results from my junior year are quite telling. I made 6th chair at District, 3rd chair of the Region Choir, 6th chair at Pre-Are, and was 2nd Alternate to the All State Choir. I didn’t actually get to sing with the choir, or neither can I technically call myself an “All Stater” but now I know that I have the potential to be one if I work even harder this year, and Laurie saw that potential in me from the beginning, My junior year Laurie helped me make audition tapes for SWACDA and I made their Honor Choir. I also received a 1st Division rating on my solo at State Solo & Ensemble, where I had gotten a 2nd division rating the year before. But Laurie’s knowledge surpasses classical singing and she also helped me tremendously with show choir auditions and what not. In my show choir, Vivace, I auditioned for solos and a filler singing “Heart of Life” and was given the featured solo in Jai Ho and my John Mayer filler was put in the show.
But beyond my accomplishments, Mrs. Laurie has been a very special influence in my life. She cares for her students as their own mother would and her encouraging personality never made lessons intimidating. In my lessons I have learned how to raise my soft pallet, proper breath control, how to lift my check bones, relax my tongue, use my lips, stand, drop my jaw, and be free in my singing (which was very hard to do with choral training). But most pertinent to my voice, she found my voice as a soloist and not as a choir member. She uncovered so much of my range as a soprano and helped me feel at ease singing there. Mrs. Laurie is a wonderful person and teacher whose expertise is rare to come about these days. She always has the best in mind for her students and her passion for teaching and voice and performing are so evident. To her potential students, take from her! I highly recommend it.

Thanks for everything Mrs. Laurie. Love, Evana

To Whom it May Concern:
It is with the utmost pleasure that I recommend Laurie as a private vocal instructor. Having known Mrs. Laurie G. since 2006, at which point I was only 12 years old, I can honestly say that she is one of the few people who had such an impact on my life as to shape it musically and otherwise. When we first met, she recognized a vocal talent that I had not yet realized and she encouraged me to pursue it. Thus, I joined the middle school choir (which was, at that point, under her instruction) and became one of her private students.
In the nearly 4 years that I took voice lessons from Mrs. Laurie G., I received a solid classical training experience that prepared me for a multitude of accomplishments. While under her instruction, I earned the Lewisville Independent School District Outstanding Soloist Award three years in a row, performed soloist roles in the musicals Once Upon a Mattress, Annie, and Aladdin, sang at a few private gigs, and gained admission to the vocal department at the esteemed Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in downtown Dallas. After starting high school there, I went on to become a member of the 2011 All-State Choir, represent Booker T. Washington HSPVA at two SWACDA conventions, and perform in and direct Abbondanza, the school’s annual musical production. Additionally, I became a member of the Booker T. Washington HSPVA Opera Workshop, performing as one of the Three Ladies in a production of Die Zauberflte and in the role of Adele in Die Fledermaus, as well as gaining behind-the-scenes access to numerous events at the Dallas Opera. Lastly, I became a member of the Booker T. Washington Jazz Singers, a contemporary jazz group, which won the 2013 Monterey Jazz Competition and became one of two high school groups in the nation to be featured at the 2013 Monterey Jazz Festival.
Laurie gave me the foundation I needed to succeed in classical and contemporary vocal environments and helped me build the personal confidence I needed to put myself out there and strive for success. She always goes above and beyond the call of duty, endeavoring to assist her students in their pursuits in any way that she can. She is an individual that I will always hold near and dear and I know that, if given the chance, she will be the same for you.
Sincerely yours,

Alexa Weiand
