My daughter started taking lessons with Athena when she was 7. Within weeks she already was playing simple songs & loved practicing etc. Now 2 years later she has shown incredible improvements. Highly recommend Athena.

Athena is a super teacher - extremely knowledgeable and patient, and wonderful to work with!
I specialize in classical singing and know a great deal of opera repertoire.
I am a performer and teacher residing in Brooklyn, NY. Although I am classically trained, my unique methods apply to all kinds of singing styles--even to speaking! I believe that music lessons should be fun and flexible. I work with my students to find exercises and songs that are most suited for their learning styles and tastes.
*** Lesson Details *** My approach begins and ends with the breath. Breath creates pitch, rhythm, musicality, and emotion. If you think about it, each way we show our emotions begins with breath--laughing, crying, sighing, etc. I use a very natural approach to sin
ging, exaggerating the noises we and the animal kingdom already make every day to sing in a very healthy, sustainable way. Have you ever wondered why a dog can bark for hours without tiring? Why a baby can cry forever? They are using their air and resonance efficiently! We all know how to do this instinctively--we just need to become aware of how we do it, and how to use this knowledge to inform healthy singing.
Through unique breathing and vocal exercises, I will help you to become a confident and consistent singer and artist. The end goal is that you can become your own teacher, diagnosing and fixing your own difficulties.
*** Studio Equipment *** I teach in my home and have an upright piano. There is street parking available.
*** Specialties *** I specialize in classical training. I can teach Italian, French, German, and English diction.

The perfect teacher
Sarah G. has been my voice teacher for some months now. She has had only my untrained, rusty soprano to work with. But with patience and an expert knowledge of the way the body works to produce sound, she is retooling my voice into something that resembles a musical instrument. She knows both the limits and potential of my voice, pushes me into places I didnât think I could go, and supports my attempts to go there. In other words, the perfect teacher. She is pleasant, prompt and professional, while being warm and encouraging. Her own beautiful voice is almost motivation enough for a student like me; if only I could sound like that.... Some day. Maybe.
Sarahâs own training has been exemplary. Julie Simson was her teacher at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where Sarah earned her bachelorâs degree in vocal performance. Moving on the McGill University, she received her masterâs degree in opera performance under the tutelage of Aline Kutan. With her current coach, Gary Norden, Sarah is extending her training not only to create a singing career for herself, but to rebuild and refine voices like mine. I am lucky to have found her.

Knowledgeable and Patient!
I have been working with Sarah for almost 6 months and every time we meet I learn something new. She is extremely patient and knowledgeable and has a way of explaining techniques that make it understandable to someone with minor knowledge. I always look forward to our lessons because I always leave with a positive experience. I'm so thankful I found her because she truly is a wonderful teacher!

I just stated pursing my career in singing and only wanted the best voice teacher. My search led me to Sarah. She is amazingly talented and super patient. I was worried at first because I knew I had a lot to learn. Especially being that I spent years singing in my room and acquired many bad habits. Sarah is helping me through this and I'm so greatful. I am learning notes, piano, and everything else that will help me excel in singing. Anyone would be lucky to have her. She is not only a great teacher but a great person as well. I look forward to more times with her.

Stephen is both knowledgeable and patient, and reinforces healthy singing technique throughout each lesson. Repeating the same information over and over must be taxing for a teacher but Stephen is very patient and supportive. I felt at ease and saw progress right away.

Stephen has been so helpful and encouraging! I needed to learn a song in one week for a wedding and wouldn't have been able to do it without him.
With students who have a classical focus, I spend considerable time developing a firm technical foundation. Lessons are adapted to the needs of the student on a weekly basis so that the knowledge gained is cumalitive. I believe that it is essential for a classical singer to be wholly aware of how their voice functions, and to have the tools necessary to gain full ownership of their singing.
I am a classically trained singer living, working, and teaching in NYC. I have a degree in vocal performance from The University of Maryland at College Park. While in the D.C. Metro area I performed as a chorister and soloist at The National Shrine, Metropolitan A.M.E Church, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. My exposure to a wide range of music, from baroque to contemporary gospel and musical theater, has strongly influenced my teaching. My goal is always to help a student develop their own understanding and experience of singing in a way that is fun, interactive, and personal
while also progressively building a strong technique.
*** Lesson Details *** My lessons are generally split between technical work/ warm-ups and repertoire. I like to adapt my concepts to a students individual personality and capability, in that sense I am flexible about the approach taken achieve optimal results. Every singer thinks and communicates differently and I see it as my job to figure out what will work best for you. I think that a foundation in a classical approach gives students the biggest tool kit with which to work. Once the fundamentals are firmly established, that singer then has the ability to approach any style of music in a way that is healthy and secure.
*** Studio Equipment *** Programmable Digital Piano and Recording Equipment.
*** Specialties *** The approach I take to the voice is based in the tradition of classical bel canto singing. It is always my goal to help students understand how to use their breath and body to produce sound that is free of tension and, therefore, beautiful.

In need of a vocal coach, I searched the Takelessons website and by what I call devine guidance I selected Elliott A. He has been my coach for a little over a year now and I would highly recommend him for his qualifications, passion for singing and his incredible teaching gift. Elliott provides a comfortable environment and really goes extra miles to ensure that concepts he teaches are practically understood. I started with many bad singing habits and poor technique and now I can definitely see great improvement in my technique and vocal freedom. I look forward to continue working with him until and beyond reaching my goal of greatness. In my opinion he's simply the BEST.
Gabrielle S. March 15, 2013
Elliot is a gem! He is everything I wanted in an instructor!
I met Elliot through a friend who is also taking lessons from him. As a beginner I was very specific in what I wanted in a teacher--someone who is patient, kind, structured and has no problem starting with the very basic fundamentals in singing. Elliot took me on as a student and has proven to be everything I could have hoped to find in a teacher! Lesson after lesson I feel more confident and capable. I feel stronger in my voice and become more and more excited for singing. Elliot's knowledge of singing technique are showcased throughout the lesson as he explains exactly what is needed to be adjusted in your technique and his patience is key to a full understanding of what is needed to be done. I highly recommend Elliot to any singer looking to train their voice, maintain technique, or broaden their range!

Marjorie is an amazing teacher!! She's very supportive and inspiring to the point that now I've started to get into songwriting. She even teaches me relaxation exercises to help nudge the creative spirit! I always leave her studio feeling enthusiastic, full of energy and looking forward to the next lesson!

When I first came to Marjorie it was to see if I could start to work on adding some natural vibrato after years of straight-tone choral singing. I was feeling very discouraged and worried that maybe I just didn't have any natural vibrato at all.
When the lesson started, one of the first things Marjorie said to me was, "You're not singing straight-tone. I can hear your vibrato in there, but we need to set it free." In just a few more lessons we were already stripping away years of bad habits from choral blending, and I was thrilled to start to feel my vocal chords phonating easily and naturally.
Fast-forward several months and my confidence -- and love for singing -- continue to grow. I'm so amazed with Marjorie's patience and faith in me and just thrilled that she was able to break through 10 years of bad habits and set free my natural sound!

"Helped me find my passion
In middle school, I really didn't have very much direction and I was afraid of going to high school. To make friends, I decided
to go out for one of the high school's audition choirs, and though I didn't make it into the elite choir, I made the women's choir. I was happy, but I was afraid to sing out even in front of the other girls in the choir. I didn't have any confidence in my voice and most of them knew how to read music and sight-sing. I didn't. I started taking lessons with Ms. Jenni in the fall of my freshman year in the hopes of catching up with the other girls and eventually auditioning into the elite choir before my senior year.
That was three years ago. I now read music and sight sing and have much more confidence in my voice. I made the elite choir at my school in the spring of my sophomore year-- and in my junior year we performed at the White House! Jenni has encouraged me to participate in competitions and summer music programs that have helped me grow even more. I am seriously considering majoring in music in college after I graduate in 2014.
Jenni has been such a wonderful teacher. She really "gets me" and her encouragement has helped me find my passion. She's always positive and helpful and treats each student like they are her only one. I just love her and I will miss her when I go to college--because without her I really don't know where I would have ended up."

"I've been studying classical voice for about 10 years. I have voice degrees from the Crane School of Music in Northern NY and Manhattan School of Music.
Over 10 years I've studied with numerous teachers, some good some not so good. Regina is the best teacher I've had thus far. She is a real technician and has an outstanding ear. I've been studying with her for 6 months and I've grown more and learned more about my voice in these few months than I have with any other teacher. It's due to the fact that every lesson she is "on" and ready to work. She is consistent and every lesson is an extension from the last lesson. Furthermore, Regina is someone who cares about you as a singer and as a person. She is willing to talk and give advice and creates a comfortable environment to put you at ease."

"Mr. Stapp has been a colleague for nearly thirty years. More recently, as my previous teacher retired, I sought out Mr. Stapp for lessons for a couple of
reasons. One, he knew my voice well through my professional career, and second, as a teacher, he has excellent diagnostic skills with which he was qickly able to pinpoint some areas that had been troubling me. Mr. Stapp offered realistic solutions for resolving these issues. Another key quality Mr. Stapp holds, crucial to singers of all stages and ilks, is the understanding of the emotional and psychological issues of singing. He supports his students steadfastly, and as I've observed his teaching, I can say with confidence, Mr. Stapp knows what he is doing. You want a good teacher? Mr. Stapp is who you want."
