I am now the Director of the Music Department at San Diego Young Artists Music Academy. I direct two youth and children choirs, a male chorus and a great adult choir. I also sing with the Voices of Prayze who travel with Jason Mraz from time to time. As a singer, pianist and as a teacher, I specialize in Gospel

Finding your real voice, free vocalizing, harmony, blending, improve usable range, the mixed voice. The first steps to mastering vocal freedom are the building blocks for vocal success. Whether the student is a child or an adult, with little or no training, it is my goal to make singing an enjoyable and freeing experience. Singing with complete vocal freedom and confidence can seem very elusive. Surprisingly, it's not as elusive as one might think! The steps to vocal freedom are within reach and most students experience a measure of freedom within the first lessons. Using a systematic method incorporating learning technique and songs the student loves to sing makes learning more fun and gives the student a greater appreciation of music as a whole while encouraging a passion for music that lasts a lifetime.

About Cosima

Whether you are just beginning your vocal journey or you are a busy performer who wants to improve healthy technique and sing with more confidence; perhaps you are a worship leader or backup singer struggling with vocal strain, my goal is to help you find vocal freedom and maintain an amazing, healthy voice that will confidently meet your expectations, year after year, in every situation, every time.

As an active performing vocalist, musician, songwriter, and worship leader, I understand the demands and challenges of a busy performance calendar, singing sets for back-to-back audiences day a
fter day and week after week, and the need for a vocalist to find the vocal freedom that will produce confidence in their voice no matter what the venue.

Vocal freedom is within reach and most students experience a measure of it within the few first lessons, some even gaining a full octave in their range in their first lessons. Using a systematic method incorporating the study of good vocal technique and working on songs the student loves to sing makes learning more fun and gives the student a greater appreciation of music as a whole while encouraging a passion for music that lasts a lifetime. I encourage and teach sight reading, and theory basics especially for those students who are considering music as a profession.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My home-studio is bright and open and set up with an upright piano, full length mirror, music stand, iPad with appropriate applications, guitar, mandolin, ukulele, and computer for recording and playback. Parents are welcome to sit in on lessons or wait for their children in the adjacent room. I also may provide a follow-up email which includes any recordings and lesson notes from the current lesson.

As the student progresses I also provide a PA system to teach mic technique and build performance confidence.

I ask that students come prepared with bottled water and a ring binder with zippered pouch for learning tools and handouts. Students are encouraged to bring a flash drive to lessons for recording transfers or they can use their phone or other recording device to record their lessons.

*** Specialties ***
I honestly love my students and love teaching voice! It's such a privilege to be a part of their vocal journey. I specialize in church worship vocals, choir, a capella, show tunes and musical theater. I teach free, healthy vocal technique which enables each student to explore and focus on different styles of singing. I also love teaching young voices especially teens who want to have a good time learning to sing.

NOTE ~ My teaching style is more structured therefore some young children may not be ready to take lessons with me.

I also include the option of acoustic guitar or ukulele lessons as some students desire to learn to play along with a project song. Not only is it fun but the music education that comes with it is highly valuable for future musicians. (rentals available at an additional cost to the student)

Any student that prefers to learn only worship guitar or beginning ukulele is welcome too! I'd love to hear from you and set up a lesson.

My teenage daughter is a bit shy. When she started with Cosima she had a nice, but untrained voice. Cosima has done a lovely job helping her to refine her voice and gain confidence. I know Cosima's teaching helped my daughter get into her very competitive High School choir. Cosima is a gem.

First lesson, I liked how she started with explaining the different parts of singing. Chest, throat, nasal, and head. I think I am going to like this.

I am so glad that I had the privilege of meeting Cosima and having her as my singing instructor. Singing is something that I always loved and still do, so I was nervous to show my flaws, but Cosima was always very encouraging. She listened carefully and always tried to find a way to help me reach what ever goal we were working on. Even though I had so much trouble with my voice she never gave up on me, she always tried to figure out different exercises that would help me out. She always asked what she could do better as an instructor to help me reach my goal. One thing I loved receiving were my lesson notes, because I could look over them and remind myself on what I needed to work on. She is extremely understanding! And very patient! I miss my lessons with her! She is the most wonderful, down to earth person and is great at what she does!

Jessie M.

Pasadena, CA

I begin each voice lesson with a warm-up to prepare the student for their session. Next, we do a series of exercises specially designed to help each individual develop their skill in a way that best fits them. We then work on a piece of their choice for the remainder of the lesson, perfecting their technique and helping them become performance ready. I teach with patience and fun because I feel that this is the key to achieving goals and inspiring a good habit of practice.

If you do not already have a song or sheet music to bring in I can help you choose one during your first lesson. I also require that my students keep a practice journal to record their daily practice sessions. If possible, please bring a recording device of some sort so you can record your lessons. It is a HUGE help to be able to listen back on your lessons and to use them in your daily practice! No experience is necessary, that is what I'm here for!

About Jessie

Every student is a unique person who deserves a lesson customized to his or her individual needs. Each of my students prospers in an atmosphere of patience and encouragement. While the lessons are fun and enjoyable, the serious student will be supported in the development of skills leading to a rewarding career. And the more casual students will grow in an appreciation of music that will always enrich their lives.

As a music major I developed a deeper understanding of music theory, piano, voice, and theater. I received my A.A. in Music at College of the Desert and my Bachelor of Music degre
e at the University of Redlands- which I attended on a music scholarship. I have played leading roles in several operas and musicals in Southern California, including Gianni Schicchi, Die Fledermaus, La Boheme (DTL nominee), The Impresario, The Grand Duke, Patience (DTL award), Cosi fan tutte, Little Women the Musical, Seussical the Musical, and many more. I have also appeared in several concerts, opera scenes, competitions (winning music scholarships and theater awards), and worked as a singer at churches, restaurants, and in pop bands. I continue to perform and study music because performing is a part of who I am and I could never live without it.

With this experience under my belt, I feel a desire to pass on my knowledge to students. I carry a strong passion to help people develop their abilities and make them their own. I truly believe that if someone wants something out of life then they WILL achieve it with dedication, perseverance, confidence, and by having FUN doing it!

Kenny C.

Yucaipa, CA

We will sing from books, pop songs, and other sheet music.

About Kenny

I started taking guitar lessons at 12 years old. At 17 I began studying classical guitar. To prepare for musical studies in college I began advanced theory and composition lessons with Dr. Simon Andrews at the Pennsylvania Academy of Music. I decided to stay near home for college and I was admitted and graduated from Millersville University in Pennsylvania with a B.A. in Music Performance. I auditioned at the University of Redlands here in Redlands, CA, and in 2012 I began my Master in Music degree at the U of R. My experience with music at the University of Redlands was phenomenal. I studied
classical and jazz guitar, assisted in guitar ensemble rehearsals, sang in the University Choir, and did extensive research of 20th century music. I now attend Claremont Graduate University pursuing my PhD in Musicology while performing and teaching guitar all over the IE and beyond. Vocal/Guitar Lessons

Learning from Kenny has been an awesome experience. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable in both a variety of singing and guitar styles, but his down-to-earth personality creates a really comfortable environment. I've never been a singer in any shape or form, so the stress-free atmosphere has been key to me opening up and becoming confident in my ability. I've only been taking lessons for a couple months now and can already hear a huge difference in the pitch and strength of my singing. With the guitar, our focus has been learning music theory and correct playing positions. Before the lessons I had been playing guitar for a while, but I still feel like I've learned more in the past two months then I have in the past few years. I'm really looking forward to starting the new year with this teacher, and moving closer to my goal of being a singer/songwriter.

Bottom line is Viven Gaines is an awesome vocal coach! Her ability to make a beginning vocalist, such as myself, feel comfortable and confident, while developing my voice was impeccable. I was blessed to have her as my coach, if not for her I wouldn't have found my true voice...Allie Knows

Love Her! Truly Grateful To Have Been Her Student!

You seriously just hit the jackpot when your taken under Vivien's wing. Besides being a great singer, Vivien Lesiak is one of the most amazing vocal teachers I have ever worked with. She has always been very dedicated and very patient. Let me just say that when I was taken under her wing I was still very shy at singing in front of even one person (including her!)

Having studied with her I've managed to do things I never thought were even possible. A girl who was afraid of singing in front of even one person ends up being able to sing in front of live audiences!!! Before I met Vivien, I had NEVER done that. Besides teaching me many amazing techniques about singing, she also helped me improve the range and tone of my voice. She also watches your tongue… And I mean that! First thing she noticed when I started my first session with her was my tongue doing who knows what (HAHA!) She makes sure parts like your tongue and jaw are relaxed and she incorporates exercises to help release any tension one may be holding. Her singing technique also incorporates the importance of ones well-being in order to reach their full vocal potential, which is something that particularly helped me.

I have gained so much more confidence thanks to her in both my singing and just life in general. I am truly grateful for having worked with her and would definitely, without a doubt, recommend her to anyone. Her talent, skills, support, and genuine-kind-loving heart is sure to help anyone grow and reach their full potential.

I can sing with confidence!

I had always wanted to sing but was very nervous about taking singing lessons because I was afraid to sing in front of anyone. But Vivien made me feel comfortable right from our very first lesson together. She is very nurturing and really helped build my confidence as a singer while developing and strengthening my voice. Now I often sing in front of others, which I never thought I would be able to do. I highly recommend Vivien. She is a great teacher!
