Farobag C.

Orland Park, IL

About Farobag

Music Director of the Chicago Philharmonia Orchestra since 1985, Farobag has also served as Managing Director of the University of Chicago Performing Artists Series from 1989 through 2002 and principa
l conductor of its resident professional ensembles. A skilled interpreter of Baroque literature as well, Farobag continues in his capacity as Artistic Advisor to the Baroque Masterplayers, a virtuoso ensemble that concatenates period performance techniques with modern instruments thus creating a unique voice within the realm of 17th and 18th- century repertoire.

A double graduate of the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester, Farobag studied under Anastasia Jempelis, a pioneer of Suzuki violin pedagogy in the United States. In addition to the Suzuki curriculum, he is also associated with the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program that sets a national standard of musical achievement in various fields.

Befitting his penchant for encouraging artistic interest amongst younger members of his community, Farobag is also the principal conductor of the Zoroastrian Symphony Orchestra that offers a unique mixture of young and seasoned professionals sitting side-by-side in a strictly professional setting. Since the year 2000, the ZSO has staged highly successful performances at various venues in Houston, Chicago, and Toronto. A New Year's eve performance in Los Angeles is scheduled for 2014.

Having also taken graduate-level coursework in educational psychology, mathematics, and philosophy at the University of Chicago, Farobag offers tutelage in various areas of elementary and secondary education as well as in SAT, ACT and GRE test preparation.

Additionally, as a certified Reiki Master, therapeutic and/or educational sessions are also extended to those who may be inclined to alternative healing techniques.

*** Lesson Details ***
Sheer technique is necessary but insufficient to play an instrument well. Aural skills, that include the study of functional tonality and voice-leading are important factors that impart musicality. This is of great import if the prospective musician wants the audience to truly enjoy his or her performance !

Whether it be the 3 Rs or preparation in the performing arts, a remarkable instructor must go well beyond the subject matter at hand and help imbue the student with a spirit of wonder that, in due time, will foster enthusiasm necessary for excellence.

A child emulates and learns to communicate in his or her mother-tongue through a supporting and nurturing environment. Likewise, a student needs to be sufficiently motivated to embrace learning in a familiar supportive manner.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lesson take place in the living room. Driveway parking. No pets.

*** Travel Equipment ***
None; I do expect a reasonably good piano / keyboard at a student's home.

*** Specialties ***
Traditional and Suzuki-based education. Performance and musicality training is open to all instrumentalists.

*** CD's***
Classical Energy, Triton Sound, TS 8501
Salut D'Amour, Triton Sound, TS 9014
Epiphanies1, The Halford Company

Chrissy S.

Bolingbrook, IL

About Chrissy

Originally born in Germany, Chrissy developed a passion for music, language and teaching early on. Right out of High School she helped her mother, who was an educator at that time, write and stage-man
age a children's Musical which found great response from the audience. During her Music studies in the Netherlands she was offered an internship at the local Music School which she gratefully accepted and where she enjoyed her first voice coaching experience. There she was also nominated as one of the most promising young singer/songwriters at the LUX Festival in Nijmegen. Over the years she was blessed with more and more private students in voice as well as piano. During her stay in New York she received the opportunity to work with a Broadway show ensemble ("Dreamgirls") as a Music Director on their different harmonic parts. She's proudly been a member of the Music of Oz Studio staff in Crown Point, Indiana since Jan. 2011 and is looking forward to teaching out of her home now as well. Chrissy is crazy about all her students and wants them to succeed! She's very much looking forward to working with you and having buckets of fun! :-)

Laura S.

Chicago, IL

About Laura

Hi! I am a linguist, educator, and yogi and I am passionate about sharing my skills!

Please note that I do not travel outside the city of Chicago.

ESL/Foreign Language Tutoring:
I am a currentl
y pursuing my MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I majored in Romance Languages at New York University and have been providing private language tutoring since 2007, when I lived and studied in Brazil. I have helped ESL students prepare for job interviews and essay tests; I have helped Portuguese students prepare for vacations to Brazil and Portugal and voting rights work in Angola. I held a career in the translation industry for seven years before beginning my current MA program.

I have an excellent command of grammar and incorporate usage and vocabulary into each custom-tailored lesson. I encourage my students to use the materials they find most beneficial to their learning process, be they news articles, poetry, songs, or novels. I am happy to work from a language book of your choice or hand-design my own exercises for you in response to your particular needs. Homework will be assigned, but it will be fun and easy!

So far, Laura has given me one private yoga lesson, and it was excellent. Before our meeting, she asked me what problem areas I wanted to work on and came prepared with a list of probably 20 poses to show me. I had never taken a yoga class before, so I was understandably awkward and inflexible, but she was very patient in showing me the correct way to accomplish each pose. She was receptive to feedback throughout the lesson about what felt good and what didn’t feel quite right, and gently corrected me as we went along.

Additionally, I’ve worked with Laura for several years in a project management capacity. She’s fluent in Portuguese and has an excellent command of French and Spanish. I’ve seen her prep work for one of her private language students and can tell that she cares deeply about teaching, and puts quite a bit of time into preparing for each lesson. I would highly recommend her for any type of lessons you’re looking to take!

When I started taking classes with Laura, I had been down-spiraling after surgery watching my physical capabilities consistently not meeting my expectations after working for months to be released for full activity. It is hard for me to remember myself then, as I have progressed so much with her guidance. She has always worked diligently to ensure I was not risking re-injury while pushing me just enough that I have seen so much progress with no setbacks.

Because I have had such a great experience, I have brought many others to her classes and they always feel she gives them individual attention, explains all the poses thoroughly, and makes them feel comfortable. This hold true for those coming from all experience levels and with a variety of medical/physical concerns. They have all wanted to go back and some say they are shocked that they like it so much because they thought yoga was something they would never be able to do. I look forward to her class every week.

I've been practicing yoga for a few years now pretty regularly. I have been to a multitude of Laura's classes. She is simply just one of the best yoga instructors I've taken classes from. She is so highly skilled at gauging her students, pushing everyone of her students just the right amount. Laura does this with the utmost patience and sweetness. She's knowledgeable in many different types of yoga and can custom build yoga classes to strengthen or sooth any group of muscles you might need. I walk away from her yoga classes feeling like a million bucks and usually raving to someone about the class.

My weekly sessions with Shannon over the past year+ have taken my body, mind, and Pilates practice of 6 years to a new level. Her serious commitment to getting the positions "right,"--posture and balance--is impressive. My body is not only stronger, fitter, but also more relaxed. She is serious about her job and focussed on her students' improvement, but is also kind and has a sense of humor. I am very fortunate I met Shannon when I moved to Chicago.

Flip Your World Upside Down: Benefits of Inversion Yoga

Curious about inversion yoga? Learn how to do some of the essential poses in this guest post by San Diego teacher Tiffany V...   We are so used to viewing life from a “right-side-up” perspective, where we soak in the world around us by way of our sensory organs (eyes, ears, nose, and mouth). We process everything upstairs, allowing it all to accumulate to form our point of view, which in turn fuels our decisions, reactions, and movements down to our toes.
