Joshua M. - FLEX LESSONS ONLY!

Washington, DC

About Joshua

**Joshua is currently performing in the Broadway company of Les Miserables so is only teaching in person in NY and sometimes in DC.**

As an actor, Joshua graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and Judith Blazer’s 2005/2007 company of the Artist’s Crossing.
Performance credits include roles in The Trojan Women, Godspell, Burn This, Comedy of Errors, Children of Eden, Othello, Show Boat, Sunday in the Park with George, The Chosen, Sweeney Todd..., and The Laramie Project to name a few.

As a director, Joshua d
irected three sold out productions of Hedwig and the Angry Inch in NC and DC, received rave reviews for his work with Neil LaBute’s Some Girl(s), and just completed production for a series on the making of Oklahoma!. Other sporadic credits include Duets for the DC Fringe Festival, a number of independent films and countless readings, workshops and concerts.
Joshua has worked as a Musical Director for many shows within the NY/NJ/DC tri-state area and coaches a handful of select students. The musical play, Definition of a Housewife, conceived and written by himself and Jeffery Self had a workshop production in the summer of 2006 at Columbia University.
Most recently he appeared in Arena Stage’s production of Fiddler on the Roof, directed the DC premiere of Madhuri Shekar’s In Love and Warcraft and will next be appearing in Signature Theatre’s production of Soon by Nick Blaemire. He is also attached to a new musical (A House of Glass) about Tennessee Williams in which Joshua will be playing the prolific writer.
Joshua is the Artistic Director of No Rules Theatre Company based out of Washington, DC and Winston-Salem, NC and sits on the board of the Artists Crossing in NY, NY.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that all singing comes from the same place, technically (Opera, Musical Theatre, Pop, etc.). I work more on building a strong foundation from which everything else comes. That includes breath, placement and the stripping away of bad vocal habits that inhibit us from making healthy productive sounds. A strong foundation does usually mean having a stronger sense of your "legit" voice because it takes more work to involve your palate and breath which makes Musical Theatre/Pop seem like a piece of cake. I like to work with dedicated students who are open to challenging themselves and exploring other schools of thought in order to take themselves to the next level.

With my actors, I start from building a foundation of a sense of truth which is inherent in all of us. We talk through/explore a number of "approaches", in order to find the individuals process. From there, we begin work on how to approach text (actions, objectives, targets, meanings, etc.)

**Prospective students should be aware that lessons for speaking voice are geared more toward theatre training, rather than speech therapy. **

*** Studio Equipment ***
A space for lessons with a large library of music/plays. An upright piano.

*** Specialties ***
I only work on a flex schedule with my students, so when booking lessons- rather than selecting a specific day and time for lessons, we schedule each lesson from week to week as we go. I have lots of open hours for teaching, though they are not reflected on my calendar, as my schedule tends to fluctuate.

I have a strong background in musical theatre but believe that it all comes from the same place. Good technique is good technique which stems from more of a "classical" background. Bel canto, if you will. It's like dancing. Dancers who study ballet are much better dancers than those who don't because they have a strong foundation from which to work.

He is very detailed in getting to know what makes you what you are and where you come from. There is an established unconditional comfortability and confidence that he brings when talking to about your history and future goals, and unquestionable intrigue of interest that helps him figure out what it is you want out of a lesson, critique, or and experience.
Overall he is very involved in actually helping you developed yourself and your craft towards what ever direction you wish to take it. Highly recommend one of his lessons and experience as a mentor

Rebecca L.

Astoria, NY

Bring in your monologue, scnee and improvisational skills and we will get to work! I highly recommend all my musical theater and opera students to have a separate acting lesson with me to really bring your song to the professional level and make it come alive. I teach the VOTE method, to help you connect with the text and make you feel present, in the moment, and KNOW your surroundings. Techniques that I teach:
VOTE method
High Status vs. Low status
Tactics vs. playing emotions
Textual stylings and alternate rhythms
Moment before
Subtext vs. Literal
Focal points

About Rebecca

I have taught private voice, piano lessons and acting for over 10 years in Miami, Minneapolis and NYC. I have also taught group intermediate ballet and have worked professionally as a singer/actress for the past ten years. My professional experience consists of various opera and theater companies both domestically and internationally. As a classically trained dancer, I also have a thorough knowledge of anatomy and how the body works to best support the actor or singer.
My formal biography is listed below:

Rebecca received a Master of Music in Vocal Performance after a very
successful tw
o years at the New England Conservatory of Music. Rebecca was cast in
leading roles in every main-stage opera offered and was also chosen
among two students to represent New England Conservatory for the Marilyn Horne Foundation
competition her very first year.

Rebecca has performed for several companies both domestic and abroad, including the Florida Grand Opera, Opera festival di Roma, American Austrian Mozart Academy, Oberlin in Italy, the Minnesota Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Opera North, and the Chicago Opera Theater. Select operatic roles include the title role in Bizet’s Le Tragédie de Carmen, “Dinah” in Trouble in Tahiti, “Despina” in Cosi Fan Tutte, the "Widow" in The Boor, “Rosa Gonzales" in Summer and Smoke, "Clori" in L'Egisto, and “Marcellina” in Le Nozze di Figaro. Distinctions include merit vocal and dance scholarships from St. Olaf College, American Musical and Dramatic Academy and New England Conservatory for a Master of Music in Vocal Performance. Rebecca is also a two-time scholarship winner from the Society of Singers.

A native of Seattle, Washington, Rebecca owes much of her captivating stage presence
to her extensive training in classical ballet, and made her professional debut in the Pacific
Northwest Ballet’s The Nutcracker at the age of nine. Rebecca has also studied ballet, tap,
jazz, and musical theatre at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy
in New York City, and at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota from which she also
holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.

As a versatile actress, Rebecca recently made her professional theatre debut at the
American Repertory Theatre of Cambridge, as “Simonetta,” a classically sung and spoken
role, in the world premiere of Stephen Greenblatt and Charles Mee’s Cardenio.

Rebecca Luttio is an amazing voice teacher

Rebecca is an Incredible person to study voice with, She has and inspiringly beautiful sound, and she's really friendly, upbeat, positive, and always enthusiastic about what were doing. Every time I don't understand something, she finds a new way to explain it, and seems to have an infinite amount of patients. I feel like what has changed the most since I began taking lessons with Rebecca, Is the physical training that comes with singing opera, as well as learning how to use your air and broadening your range, which would have never crossed my mind before. I really like that she is a student as well as a teacher and comes to every lesson with new Ideas. For me the couple years we have worked together so far have really changed the way I sing with my whole body, I would recommend her to anyone who really loves to sing.

How can I help?

That's how I will start every private lesson with the actor.

From there, I will work hand-in-hand with the student to achieve the goals that they seek. I have background in a wide variety of acting techniques and skills ranging from beginning acting to Shakespeare language, contemporary scene work and musical theatre to audition prep. I will let the actor choose their own material or I can work with them to find exactly what they need to show off the best of their abilities.

Just tell me what you need and I will make it happen for you.

I have known Dave for many years, and have worked within him onstage and off. In addition to being a respectful, down-to-earth person, Dave has a treasure trove of invaluable expertise when it comes to acting and stage performance. As a director, Dave challenged us and brought us to new levels to create our absolute best performance. I am currently a K-12 Certified Theatre Teacher, and I would absolutely recommend Dave to anyone who is looking for an acting coach, teacher, or director.

I was so impressed by the plays that Dave has produced, directed and acted in (not knowing that one of them, he also wrote) that I attended one of his workshops, for the sheer adventure and education of watching him work. I pursue no career in acting, though I am from a show business family; so I know what's good and what goes.

Watching Dave work with actors is refreshing because he is able to do so without seeming condescending but also without appearing a novice, something that can happen when working with someone on the younger side of the business. Dave's ability as a director, teacher or coach does not belie his true age. He has an innate ability to zone in on what any particular actor needs to bring their performance to life and he applies that ability in a friendly manner befitting a safe environment in which one can stretch their wings. He imbues his colleagues with a sense of trust which every artist needs before laying bare their vulnerable artistic senses.

I could not recommend him more, as a teacher of any kind or as a man worth knowing.

Whether it's getting his guidance at his Theatre Co's open workshops, watching him act on stage, seeing shows he has directed or getting one on one coaching, Dave's sensitivity and love for the art stands out and makes working with him a real joy. His ability to see, to feel and to guide an actor to the deeper parts of their own work are what makes him superior at all levels; if your a beginner or a seasoned veteran needing to work on improving your acting "back hand" Dave is the man to go to.

Marlene R.

Astoria, NY

I'm a working filmmaker who is making independent movies and web series. I will help you discover your authentic voice as a person and actor who can express themselves freely. I will help you use fear instead of being stopped by it and turn anxiety into excitement. I work very uniquely with each person depending on what their level is and how ready they are. I approach material from a very truthful human place and guide you to let YOU come through the character's voice.

About Marlene

I love teaching people to express themselves in the performing and written arts. I am great with beginners.

I attended Ithaca College’s film program on a screenwriting scholarship. Since then, I've directed and choreographed over 50 music videos including 2Pac Shakur’s last, Amy Winehouse’s “F-Me Pumps,” as well as an award winning indie feature called THE BIG SHOT-CALLER. It was well received by the New York Times and critic Kam Williams gave it four stars. I was selected by FILMMAKER Magazine as one of their “Top 25 New Faces of Independent Film.” I have since written and directed th
ree different comedy web series on YouTube entitled “My Parents Are Crazier Than Yours,” “Angry Gladys,” and “I Don’t Care About the Assholes with Dr. Rita Gatswani.” I am currently in the process of developing two feature films.

I'd love to inspire your writing, acting or dancing.

I have little dance background. Took some ballet when I was a kid but that's all. I watched a few dance movies such as "Step Up" and it inspired me to take up hip hop dancing. I took a couple of group lessons in one of those dance studios but I did not feel comfortable after that because everybody there seemed so skilled. I decided to go for private lessons and came across Marlene's profile. My first lesson with her went well. She was VERY patient! Since I'm a beginner she took it easy on me and taught me dance moves that she felt I would be capable of handling. She plans on teaching me more advanced moves as I progress into the next level. I really appreciate her patience and I look forward to my next lesson. ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND!
