I am a big believer in building technique. If someone has excellent technique in ballet (the base of dance) the other styles will be stronger. In this way, having a good foundation in voice ill allow the student to be stronger in musical theatre, pop, country, ect. I always begin with technique and expand my horizon's with the student once I know they have a great base!

About Shannon

Hi! My name is Shannon and I am very excited to be apart of the Takelesson's team! I think I came out of the womb singing a song! My love of music and eventually performing, led me to receive my bachelor's in Voice Performance from Missouri Southern State University in my hometown of Joplin, Missouri. While getting my degree, I realized I wasn't quite ready to embark in the professional performing world without a little more education. I went on to receive my Masters Degree in Musical Theater from The Boston Conservatory. I moved to LA in the fall of 2009 and fell in love with the weath
er and the people.

Music is such an important part of my life and I love sharing my knowledge and passion with other people! Not only is learning about music a fun experience, but helps build discipline, confidence, and pride in ones accomplishments no matter how big or small. Music will be in our lives forever! To know more about it will only enhance ones life experience!

I am a big believer in building technique. If someone has excellent technique in ballet (the base of dance) the other styles will be stronger. In this way, having a good foundation in voice or piano (or taking a more classical approach) will allow the student to be stronger in musical theatre, pop, country, ect. I always begin with technique and expand my horizon's with the student once I know they have a great base!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I expect my students to be ready to work and have fun when I arrive. A quiet area where the student can concentrate and feel at ease it always preferred as well.

For voice students a piano or keyboard is preferred but with the wonders of modern technology not a requirement!

I like for all students to have a notebook where I can write assignments and practice expectations for the coming week. It's also a great way to see the progress of our time together.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in healthy singing, first and foremost. I believe that the cornerstone of making any sound is proper technique, whether one is singing pop or art song, speaking Shakespeare or Mamet. I specialize in classical singing and the Broadway belt/mix styles.

I teach beginning-intermediate piano. I love teaching piano! I feel it's the best instrument to learn because you must learn every aspect of reading music to play proficiently. I was able to learn several instruments quickly growing up because of the skills I acquired through learning piano first.

I am also able to coach/teach break down/ score a monologue/scene/song for study and performance. I feel that the first rule of acting is specificity. There are millions of possibilities, all one has to do is make a specific choice with each new turn of thought.

Along with making healthy choices for the artists instrument, I also feel strongly about making a healthy and safe place for a student to experiment and try new things. In any lesson/class taught, I want every student to feel that they can take risks and push the limits of their talents! When one steps out their comfort zone growth happens!

Shannon is an absolutely phenomenal vocal coach. I study Classical Voice and Musical Theatre Voice with her, and I have improved drastically in both areas since beginning with her around a year ago. With her I have learned breathing, belting, mixing, and how to properly sing classically (with space). She has awesome pieces that we work on and manages to teach me the pronunciation of words in a variety of languages for arias and art songs. Shannon also has a lovely personality and a great sense of humor! I HIGHLY recommend her!

All around great teacher.

My granddaughter has improved immeasurably since working with Shannon. Her confidence has soared and she can't stop singing.
Shannon has worked on her air capacity and support and her upper range and tone is so much better. She's punctual and dependable and a pleasure to work with.

Shannon makes learning, growing and performing lots of fun

I see Shannon primarily for voice lessons, but she really helps me prepare for every aspect of auditioning. From vocal technique, to song selection, cuttings for auditions, getting out of my head and into the character, Shannon has been my guide every step of the way, and all with enthusiasm, laughter, encouragement, and wisdom. She's helped with my acting on songs, but she's also helped me to choose and prepare monologues and sides. She challenges me in every lesson so I'm always improving, and she's guided my first steps in this business. I am so grateful to have found her! Whether you want to pursue acting and singing as a career or a hobby, I highly recommend Shannon. She really makes it fun!

Technique lays the ground work for proficiency in any instrument. The voice is no different. I teach breathing, placement, ear training and harmony. That said, I focus my coaching on the power of authentic story telling using movement and acting exercises to build artistic skill.

About Toni

Just a couple of seasons ago one of my amazing students, Juliana Chahayed made top 40 on American Idol! 2 of my students recently made it through two rounds of The Voice. 12 of my students sang on the Grammy Award nominated "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming" by M83. My students have also gotten into top music programs at Berklee College of Music, NYU, USC, Brandeis and Cal State University Northridge; won 1st prize in the high school talent show and money prizes in community singing contests. My singers have sung the Star Spangle Banner at Staples Center for a Clipper's game and produced success
ful showcases in the LA area. My story starts a while back: As a singer/songwriter my experiences singing live from Bud Friedman's Improv to the Disneyland Hotel and in studios all across Los Angeles eventually took me to Europe where I landed in Brussels and recorded an album for Sony Records/Belgium which produced three radio hits in the 90's. I also recorded and/or wrote jingles for Coca Cola, Fanta, Schwepes, Fisher Price and more! Fluent in French, when I moved back to the states I taught at Lycee International de Los Angeles for 12 years where I developed a music program for their 4 campuses, teaching K through 12, including commendations from everyone from French President Sarkozy to Los Angeles Councilman Tom LeBonge. I've recorded 6 children's CD's and recently directed and arranged background vocals for renown French singer and actress Charlotte Gainsbourg. In my private practice I have prepared and developed singers for live performance, personal development and for the rigors of the auditioning process. And we always have fun!!

*** Lesson Details ***
Learn to play the voice! I have developed my own special brand of singing lessons using breathing and placement techniques to provide the tools you need to develop as a vocalist and help you make the choices of an artist. How do you want to tell your story? My lessons will help you build confidence and every lesson will bring you a new piece of understanding and practical know-how. You will work hard, play hard, build a repertoire, and make tangible improvements in every single lesson! Success breeds success. If you want to audition for The Voice or simply enjoy the applause at karaoke night, I can bring you closer to your goal. I can also include beginning piano which can only add to your skills including an understanding of music vocabulary and the basic mechanics of music theory.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music Room, and recording studio, piano, guitars, computer and cd, ipod docs. Parents are welcome to stay for lessons or run to close-by Starbucks, Costco or Home Depot!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I use a piano to teach both voice and beginning piano.

*** Specialties ***
I use solfege, breathing and placement techniques filtered through an emphasis on real world performance skills. Helping the student build confidence is probably one of the teachers' most important roles. Creating a safe environment is key to keeping the lesson fun, productive and challenging. Every single student should leave every single lesson with a tangible feeling of progress.

I first came to Toni seeking help with college auditions in classical voice. Since I met her, she has been encouraging of my talent and my pursuits which is an important contribution to my confidence as a performer.
Toni will remind you of your strengths and guide you through what you want to improve. She will travel deeper into the music with you, but she will also introduce you to new genres, helping you develop as musician overall.
You will always walk out of a lesson a stronger musician than when you walked in. A vocal instructor must be able to identify what you do well and where you can bring even more to your performance. Toni provides the perfect balance between the two.
Finding a teacher who was a comfortable fit is the first important step in the process of advancing yourself as a musician. The second I walked out of my first lesson with Toni, I was confident she would help me do just that.

We have been absolutely thrilled with the results that we've seen in our two boys' abilities since working with Toni for the past year and a half. They are both in their high school's show choir and we couldn't be happier with this year's accomplishments. Our freshman earned major solos in his group's competition set and has also earned a spot in next year's Advanced Show Choir group which mostly consists of seniors. As far as our senior son, Toni helped him with his confidence in his singing ability, and helped him secure a solo in his final show choir performance. He also joined a band with his friends and was more than thrilled to be selected as the front man.
We asked our boys if they wanted to take a break for the summer, they both said "No" and that they wanted to continue with Toni throughout their summer vacation.
Thank you Toni - you're simply the best!

Learn to sing correctly using the best techniques in the world. I studied voice with Robert Austin at USD and Richard Nichol in San Francisco in the Garcia-Marcheisse Institute. I have over 35 years of on-stage performance including Opera performances, Broadway Style Musicals, Sacred Oratorios as well as Intimate opera dinner gatherings. From Soloist at St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco to entertainer at corporate events with over 5,000 in attendance. After taking $30,000 in voice lessons I have now written my own "How to sing correctly" training manual.

About Daniel

Music lessons should be fun and focus on what you want! I am willing to travel to you or welcome you to my studios in the San Fernando Valley. I teach all over San Diego and Los Angeles Counties. What is your goal? Some students want to sing better in school choir or musical programs. Some are trying to sing or play guitar for Church or Synagogue. Others have their eye on Disney careers, rock/pop bands, in short being professionals. I will help you move closer to reaching that dream!!! I am a graduate of USD with a B.A. in Philosophy with an emphasis in musical performance. I also ho
ld a Masters degree, completed California Teaching Credential Curriculum from Chapman University and completed Doctoral Studies at Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. I studied voice, guitar and piano classes throughout grade school, high school, college and post-graduate training. I specilized in vocal training with Robert Austin and in San Francisco with Richard Nichol of the Garcia-Marchesi Institute. I sang with the Palm Beach Florida Opera Company. I am a tenor with a 3.5 octave range. I also sang and performed in Musicals and Operas and Sacred Oratorios from Maui to Florida. I am the proud "dad" of two high school aged children who are excellent students!

I also offer voice or guitar classes at St. Cecelia's School of Music in Canoga Park, and privately in my home Reseda. I focus my instruction on "correct" breathing and proper singing. My time-tested techniques will improve and protect your voice from injury.and produce a beautiful tone and wonderful performance. I teach guitar chords, reading standard musical notation as well as tablature. For beginning piano students of all ages I teach you how to read music, play scales, strenghten your finger strength and play cords and song.

Teresa Y.

Northridge, CA

Singers--and those who want to be--need opportunities to SING! Some are ready to shine and just need training. Others need training AND encouragement in an environment that feels safe and private, while they gain confidence, which slowly effects the sounds they make, allowing THEM to be ready to shine!

I specialize in working with beginners of all ages and with students at any level who know the style or styles of music they want to explore and master. My passion is working with my students in ways that prepare them to pursue their musical interests armed with technique, music-reading capabilities, and what I call the "building blocks" of music: knowledge of functional music theory and how to use it.

"Music theory" can sound daunting, but in fact it is fascinating, at least the way I teach it, using analogies appropriate to the age of the student, from chords like different types of sandwiches (yum!) to chord progressions like the materials and equipment used to build a house.

About Teresa

A musician since age 4, Teresa's dad took her early passion for music seriously. So she respects the power that parents have to foster their children's musical lives! She notes the many stories she has heard over the years: "If someone had just supported my interest"... "If my teacher had listened to what I wanted to learn."

These stories and her own passion for music-making inform her approach. A degreed music educator and multi-instrumentalist, she celebrates and uses the musical interests of her students to move them forward. She has three grown sons, including two touring musicians. Th
eir musical lives also influence her work with children, young people, and adults. The point is to celebrate and develop each student's unique, interest-based musical self-expression.

In her home teaching studio in Sherwood Forest, CA, half an hour is the perfect lesson time. Options include piano, voice, beginning guitar and ukulele, music theory, and preparation for auditions. Teresa also conducts "music fun time" sessions for 2 to 4 year olds. 45-minute and 60-minute sessions are available as needed, and are recommended for audition prep.

For a little more info on Teresa, her additional "grownup" professional passion is Life Coaching. If anyone in your circle would be helped by coaching, consider referring them to Teresa right here on TakeLessons.com.

If I ever lived too far to visit Teresa for lessons, I would hope that she could Skype for lessons because there is no other teacher I'd want than her. She absolutely loves music and desperately wants to share the joy and beauty of music with everyone.
She has been so patient and kind teaching music/singing to my 4 year old. My wife, my son and I are having a blast!
