Rachel A.

West Hartford, CT

About Rachel

Mezzo-soprano Rachel Abrams has captured audiences throughout the United States with her rich and warm timbre, beautiful blend, and dynamic stage presence. A native of Stockton, California, Rachel was born into a musical family and quickly developed an affinity for the performing arts. She first fell in love with classical music as an oboist and gradually found her niche as a singer through her passion for languages, literature, and theater. In the fall of 2012, she relocated to Connecticut where she continues to be an active performer of opera, oratorio, art song, crossover, and new music.

Formerly a soprano, Ms. Abrams has been featured with multiple companies throughout New England. Most recently, she captured audiences as the First Niece in Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes and Mrs. Nordstrom in A Little Night Music with Madison Lyric Stage, Mabel in Pirates of Penzance with the Greater Meriden Concert Chorale, with Hartford Opera Theater as Miss Paige in Boston based composer Dan Shore’s An Embarrassing Position, Mrs. Nordstrom in A Little Night Music, and the premiers of Christopher McCormick’s opera In A Grove and Miss Romano in Jeremy Beck’s I Can Hardly Wait!. She has also performed the role of Peep Bo in The Mikado and as Casillda in scenes from The Gondoliers with the Simsbury Light Opera Company, with Greater Worcester Opera and the 4th Wall Stage Company in Massachusetts.

Prior to moving to Connecticut, Rachel lived in St. Louis, Missouri, where she frequently performed with the St. Louis Symphony as a member of the St. Louis Symphony Chorus. She has also performed with Winter Opera St. Louis, Union Avenue Opera, and the Southern Illinois Music Festival. In 2012, Ms. Abrams had the opportunity to be a sponsored young artist with Winter Opera St. Louis where she performed the role of Echo in Ariadne auf Naxos, covered Musetta in La Bohème, and performed in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical review: A Grand Night for Singing. Ms. Abrams has also performed with Opera Fort Collins, Loveland Opera Theater, Victorian Lyric Opera, and Opera Classica Europa in Bad Schwalbach, Germany as an apprentice artist. Additional operatic credits include: Gretel in Hansel and Gretel, Zweite Dame in Die Zauberflöte, Giannetta in L’Elisir d’Amore, Susanna and Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro, and Fanny in Rossini’s La cambiale di matrimonio.

No stranger to the concert stage, Ms. Abrams has performed in numerous concerts, oratorios, and recitals throughout the United States. She has performed the mezzo-soprano solos in Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and Vivaldi’s Gloria. A passionate performer of Jewish music, Ms. Abrams was featured as a soloist in Martin Bresnick’s puppet opera, Der Signál, with the Hartford Independent Chamber Orchestra during the 10th Annual Celebration of Jewish Arts and Culture at Charter Oak Cultural Center in October of 2014.

As an active performer of art song, Ms. Abrams has collaborated with various musicians throughout the New England region to create diverse and accessible art song recitals. In the fall of 2014, Rachel and pianist Andrew King performed an art song recital throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts titled Songs of Land and Sea. This recital consisted of works by Schubert, Fauré, Rorem, and Rachmaninoff and was received with great acclaim. In April of 2015, Ms. Abrams and pianist Michael Korman presented a recital featuring the works of Schönberg, Ruth Schönthal, Previn, and Weill with the Maurice Greenberg Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Hartford.

In addition to being a passionate performer and collaborator, Rachel is a private music educator dedicated to the success of her students. Ms. Abrams maintains a private studio of voice students out of her home in West Hartford, Connecticut. In addition to her private teaching studio, Ms. Abrams teaches Musical Discovery courses at the Farmington Valley Academy Montessori in Avon and Introduction to Musical Theater and Group Voice classes at The Arts Place in Cheshire.

Before opening her own private studio in Connecticut, Ms. Abrams lived in St. Louis, Missouri where she taught throughout the region. While in Missouri, she served as an Adjunct Voice Instructor/Lecture Professor at East Central College and a Private Voice and Music Instructor at St. John's School of the Arts.

In addition to her teaching experience in the Missouri area, Rachel was a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Northern Colorado where she was an assistant instructor for Music Survey and Music and World Cultures classes.

*** Specialties ***

William has been a wonderful instructor for our 8 years old. He has been patient and has found ways to both explain music and also make it interesting. Will has even modified complex music to an easy to play version so our son could play a song he loved. His musical growth over the last 7 months has been remarkable and its in large part due to Will's low key, thoughtful, patient approach.

Roberta is amazing! I went to her for a little more than 3 years for voice (and piano for a little bit) and she is very helpful, skilled, friendly, knowledgable, and fun. She helped me get into my top choice college as a choral music major with a full tuition scholarship and supported me the entire way. Roberta knows how to work with any voice with any level of experience of any age. Not only is Robera a fantastic teacher; she is also very understanding and a great person to talk to. I would highly recommend her to any student in the area.

Dana K.

Rocky Hill, CT

I am specialized in classical singing and general voice technique. My students, especially those who are beginners, work initially on basic technique and musicianship. This forms the foundation that enables concentrating on a specific style later on (including musical theater, pop, etc). Students work on one or more songs at a time, depending on level and preference.

In the past year, I have had a student accepted to the Hartt School's Pre-Professional Summer Musical Theater Intensive, and another cast in a lead role her local Children's Theater musical!

About Dana

I am passionate about helping people of all ages to develop their singing talents! I am a classically trained singer and a certified K-12 music teacher. I have a Bachelor's degree in Voice and Music Education from the Hartt School, and a Master's degree in Early Music/voice from the Longy School of Music of Bard College.
I take an individualized and exploratory approach to teaching singing; I believe that students get the best results when they have an equal part in improving their skills through self-reflection, critical thinking, and practice.
In addition to building a private studio, I a
m on the voice faculty at the Hartt School Community Division, where I teach students ages 9 through adult, and I teach voice to non-music-majors at the University of St. Joseph.

I've only had the privilege of working with Dana for 3 months, but have already noticed great improvement in my voice! She is patient and understanding, while still keeping students focused and motivated, offering encouragement along the way. She is incredibly knowledgable and thinks it's important to share the "why" behind the "what" so that her students are really using their voices properly. It has been more than a decade since my last formal singing experience, and my time with Dana has helped me access better technique than I've ever had, which has given me a huge confidence boost. I would absolutely recommend Dana to anyone looking to improve vocally!!
